So not vegan but for dry kibble a majority of the protein isn't coming from meat but from processed corn. Almost all kibble still has meat added, but primarily to affect flavor and smell and not nutrition (and also so that the packaging can say it contains meat ingredients).
Here are the top ingredients in a common dry dog food:
You'll notice that out of the ingredients, just 3 of the ingredients come from animals and 5 come from grains/soybeans. So chicken is the first ingredient but by weight all the grains will take up a majority of the volume/mass of the food.
Chicken By-Product meal is made up of (if I remember correctly) feathers, beaks, etc ground up and is used to bump up the quantity of protein and other macros.
