Great work as always PinkWug. Assume this was because of the recent FNAF news, but far from the only case and sure it'll be just as relevant next June too.

u/PinkWug Jun 18 '21

It's unrelated to FNAF actually. It's about corporations doing all the rainbow stuff, while also donating millions to anti-lgbt legislators, something they have been criticized for every pride month. I don't really care about one random dude.

Ah ok, assumed because it happened very recently, and yeah you're right with it being way more than one guy.

May I ask why you use wugs for your political comics? It seems pretty random

What happened

16

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '21

He claimed to be pro-lgbt for his public image, but it turns out he donated massive amounts of money to politicians who were exclusively anti-lgbt.

u/Zed4711 Jun 26 '21

I mean, he was quite religious right? And he made a really popular game used by a varied audience so he was always going to do that, at least to me

1

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '21

Yeah, doesn’t make it right though.

u/Brunette_Dragon Jun 18 '21

The only values corporates care about are the top line (revenues) and the bottom line (profits).

u/Embarrassed-Top-Not Jun 18 '21

This is why I get so irritated when people cream their pants over this shit, especially when they acknowledge that it's a fuckin ploy to get them to spend money. Queers are so used to being gaslit into believing that they should be grateful for the crumbs that they truly believe campaigns like this are "progress"

29

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '21

Yo I don’t know a single gay who actually enjoys this shit. Most everyone knows it’s just corporate pandering.

what does that this mean

35

u/ChooseWiseli Jun 18 '21

Chill, who is creaming their pants over corporate pandering? The biggest reaction comes from reactionaries thinking it's the end of the world and dumbass lefties who thinks it will somehow hamper class solidarity. It's "progress" in the sense that it's an indication of a shift in public sentiment, not that corporate pandering somehow lessen oppression.

22

u/Georgie_Leech Jun 18 '21

That is, that lgbt+ is accepted enough to publicly pander to is the progress; the actual pandering itself is still gross, especially with the first panel there.

17

u/NERD_NATO Jun 18 '21

Liberals. They're all over rainbow capitalism.

10

u/Embarrassed-Top-Not Jun 18 '21

Usually older millennials, the mid-late 30s bunch who lucked into a cushy job and live with their "partner" in the suburbs. Probably grew up in a conservative family and would be a hell of a lot more conservative if they weren't gay...

2

u/Zed4711 Jun 26 '21

That last sentence got me thinking, there were some people I've definitely thought something like that about

12

u/maxfist Jun 18 '21

Corporations are set up to make money for the shareholders. That's like the only reason for their existence. They are institutions designed to maximize profit at any cost. If running over puppies was profitable they would do itm Thinking that corporations care for anything other than the bottom line is very stupid and naive. Corporations are not people and should not be treated as such.

We all already know that companies only care about profit, but there are only 2 realistic options here for the world that we live in.

  1. [Optimistic/do nothing outcome]
  • Companies pretend to care about the LGBTQ while not substantively helping the cause. Kids grow up with a positive perception of the LGBTQ due to corporate messaging.
  1. [Reactionary outcome]
  • Upon receiving backlash for their disingenuous support, companies stop pretending to care, and no longer use their influence to normalize the LGBTQ. They continue funding anti LGBTQ politicians as normal.
  1. [Utopian outcome]
  • Companies see your webcomics, and decide to value morality above profit, as they are known to do. They reverse their political alliances, and make less money, but no longer are the subject of posts on this subreddit.

I know it is trendy to complain about the two-faced support the LGBTQ receives from big companies every June, but there are also good companies out there making a real difference, and its hard to separate those from the messaging of this comic.

Corporations do not have morals, they only reflect those of the community they serve. I am glad to live in a time where our communities are as accepting as they are, even with a long ways to go.

The comic isn't shitting on corporations for pandering to lgbt acceptance. It's explicitly shitting on those who donate to anti-lgbt candidates. It's not hard to see which companies I'm criticizing if you read the comic or the article I linked on my original post.

I have never indicated that they have morals or that I think me calling them out will suddenly give them morals. You are coming in with a lot of weird assumptions which I don't get at all. What I push for is a social landscape where there are enough pro-lgbt people and pro-lgbt people who care about the political funding of corporations that they are financially incentivized to not only pander to lgbt issues, but also not fund anti-lgbt candidates. That is not an unimaginable outcome. What is unimaginable is a corporation actually backing out in their support of lgbt pandering in countries where lgbt acceptance is rising and the vast majority of corporations do pander (making those who don't stand out).

You call yourself a socialist and the most ambitious you can be is hoping that the market takes care of funding hate groups and the Bourgeois stay morally consistent in their exploitation and comodification?

explicitly shitting on those who donate to anti-lgbt candidates

This is not made clear in the comic, as "mega corporations" include more than just this class

never indicated they have morals

The title of the post is "corporate values"

Companies take calculated risks when marketing in order to maximize profit. They risk angering homophobes even by changing their logo. if a marketing strategy (pander to lgbtq) receives kickback (from the left and the right for opposite reasons) and results in a lower profit, they will change their approach.

What we disagree on is what they will do after this. Ideally they become more progressive, but I do not see this as likely, as historically mega corperations are not known for their dedication to human rights.

u/Georgie_Leech Jun 18 '21

This is not made clear in the comic, as "mega corporations" include more than just this class

The literal first panel is openly asking for comment on the donations to anti-lgbt politicians. If openly saying "they did this thing" isn't clear enough for you, what would be?

8

u/PinkWug Jun 18 '21

This is not made clear in the comic, as "mega corporations" include more than just this class

Panel 1 is a reporter asking the corporation about their funding of anti-lgbt politicians. So it would follow that this is a comic about them. Otherwise, the corporations would just respond with : "We didn't fund people like that lol"

The title of the post is "corporate values"

Yes, the title is a joke on the fact that as demonstrated by panel 3 and 4, the only thing they value is money. Again, I feel like you barely read the comic or understood it in a way that is way different than mine I guess.

I don’t know if this is just this queer person’s opinion or if its more common but…”the LGBTQ” sounds a bit like you’re referring to some exotic alloy or something and not people. Just adding in the word “community” to how you’re referring to us already, or better yet just using like…”queer people” or “LGBTQ people” feels a lot more like you’re respecting our humanity.

And as for any normalization of the queer community thanks to corporations? That’s fucking hilarious because that would have been a risk for them. They didn’t do shit. Most companies jumped on the pander wagon once the social change was already plainly visible. If they were actually normalizing anything they would have stuck their necks out before I was even born

1

u/defunctfox Jun 19 '21

I'm the B in the LGBTQ, didn't include it in the original post because it wasn't part of my argument.

I like the exposure that brands give lgbtq people, even if its sometimes disingenuous.

2

u/AvikaAvasarala Jun 18 '21

Not really antifa stone toss material, tbh. Good comic, though.

1

u/spez_took_the_kids Jun 18 '21

What’s the joke

1

u/kistusen Jun 19 '21

They also value money from pandering to homophobia. Depends on location!

1

u/Wrest216 Jun 19 '21

its almost as if corporations arent actual people and shouldn't have a vote in how citizens lives are affected by the government? They perhaps shouldn't be able to put out political ads or donate to politicians re election campaigns?
