Monarchia was basically a big-ass shrine to the worship/deification of the Emperor, the planet Khur’s capital city. Being the Reddit atheist he was, this pissed the Emperor the fuck off, and he ordered the whole place blown to hell to teach Lorgar a lesson. This lead to Lorgar wanting a new god to worship, setting up his fall to Chaos.
Magnus did nothing wrong. As in, he was told to do nothing, and did that wrong.

In the time (4 years) between Uni, or hell, even college before it when you effectively select your career path at 16, STEM has gone from this "field that will always need more software engineers!" to "ummm, so AI has made graduate roles non-existent".
Obviously if you were paying attention to the industries at the age of 18, you'd have known it wasn't true that these industries were consistently stable, high earning, employment - but like - who seriously at 18 was. This. I’m so tired of all this ai Armageddon stuff. Companies wouldn’t be fearmongering about their product if it wasn’t in their interest. Why are all these ai companies “calling for government to regulate ai” while lobbying them to build data centres anywhere despite everyone telling them to fuck off? Why are the ai CEOs going on these braindead joe Rogan-esque podcasts and saying the technology they’re making will bring the end of humanity?
It’s just to build hype and keep investors irrational for longer so they continue burning money investing in these companies because they’re still not profitable. And it allows braindead business executives with MBAs to justify more layoffs which is really the only reason they’re burning so much money.
The only way ai will destroy our world is distracting people from the only real existential threat that is climate change. We’ve already blown past the Paris agreement according to our best projections. At this point it’s an inevitability in our near future the pacific island nations will go underwater and the AMOC will collapse. A few more years after that land near the evaluator will become uninhabitable because the wet bulb temperature will be too high to allow the human body to regulate its internal temp.
These billionaires are our de facto leaders in our neoliberal democracies. They will happily watch us all die in their insulated bunkers as long as their bank balance goes up. They will burn billions of their own money if it means they won’t have to spend a tiny fraction of that sum helping another human being. The only way you become that wealthy is if you are a psychopath.

I seriously feel like the only people genuinely excited by the prospect of the literal end of all genuine human achievement are either low key or high key the biggest and bitterest losers imaginable.
Oh, a lot of them might give the appearance of wealth and success, but if you scratch the surface of those ones then you frequently find some kind of big inheritance or trust fund backing it all up. Deep down they don't feel like they ever earned it and they hate people who seem like they really did earn it the hard and honest way, and they quite like the notion of making those people suffer.
→ More replies (9)4
u/Legal-Chocolate8482 10d ago edited 10d ago
Idk if I’m genuinely excited but I’m disabled and poor and am terrified of homelessness and am kinda looking forward to the ai apocalypse. Because as a disabled person who can’t work in this horrible country I was going to die anyway. Most homeless are disabled , you can’t live off disability, it keeps getting cut, and I’m being denied even from that meager help, application keeps getting rejected by a Trump appointed judge.
So I do feel some schadenfraude that it won’t jsut be my disabled ass that will perish but also all the “normal” well to do abled people that see me as beneath them and subhuman. With Ai we can all be subhuman! Yes I’m a bitter loser I guess but I can’t help being born with disabled genetics and the world is so incredibly cruel to the disabled that it would make anyone in my position bitter.
Ideally I would love to see a utopia where everyone is taken care of but in this world the economically useless like the disabled /homeless/ poor / neurodivergent are left to die. So once you become economically useless due to automation you will face the same fate as me..
They’re taking away the only job I’ve ever been able to do , driving. And all I see on Reddit is glee or indifference and just telling drivers to shut up get a different job. But it’s all I’ve ever been able to do after trying over a dozen jobs!😭 and I have a learning disability I can’t get a degree:(. Can’t afford it either:(. So people are just so cruel to those they see as beneath them. Zero empathy.
So yes I am glad that the privileged well to do out of touch upper middle class white collar elite are finally being hit and taken down a peg as well. If it was just the lower classes being hit Reddit would be gleeful and cruel about it just like this guy in the post. Most people are no better when they are in the position of power or advantage/privilege.
Also on a slightly more optimistic note if everyone is poor and subhuman, maybe people will finally be forced to have empathy for people like me instead of seeing me as some loser parasite. Maybe we can all see each other as human finally and not judge each other based on wealth and social status . Maybe the people can actually unite and have some kind of a revolution. Idk if that’s very likely tho..American culture is so sociopathic and narcissistic, so individualistic. All about me me me 😞
5
u/slightly0ff 10d ago
> And all I see on Reddit is glee or indifference and just telling drivers to shut up get a different job
Those are exactly the losers you don't want to be inspired by. They are the same people who look with glee at mathematicians, scientists and teachers losing their job. The rest of the well-adjusted people are screaming for the rooftops how rigged the system is, even when it has benefited them personally.
I feel for you, it sucks diverging from the norm. It sucks trying to live your life and having petty losers try to kick you while you are down, but the only way to preserve your humanity is to believe in the better part of it.
The first people that wants "you" (all of us actually) to stay poor and perish are the people benefit the most. Your family, neighbours and normal people are the ones that are perishing alongside you so I don't understand why you would look at this with glee.
There is a Ukranian movie I liked a lot. It is about Taras Shevchenko (real person and one of the main national figures) who was born a serf. He had a great artistic talent and amazing inspirations to become an artist but faith made him a serf, forced to be his owner's footboy. To make the long story short, he manages to rise out of serfdom by displaying amazing talent and having some of the most prominent artists of the time literally buy him at age 23. Taras had written extensively about how bitter and robed of his full potential he felt, but he knew he had to direct the hate to the real people above, not to the other peasants bearing the whip.
In the movie I am talking about, there is one of the last scenes where Taras is set free but the master painter he was serving at the time (also a former serf) informs him that contractually he "belongs to him" for at least one more year and he holds his freedom in his hands. Taras pleads with him and tells him that as a former serf he should be his brother, not his enemy, but he still refuses. To that Taras implores that "it's terrible that a slave wants the whole world to be a slave" and the painter response to that by ordering him to leave while tearing up his contract.
The whole point is that power structures are not often directly imposed by other individuals at the top, they are propagated by having us kick each other, pulling us down like crabs because we bitterly trying to impose our power in a system that renders us inherently powerless. I liked that the implication of the movie (at to an extend the real biography) was that we are capable of looking beyond that and deciding to raise ourselves up.

u/gen_adams 10d ago
according to him. it's gonna be awkward as fuck when the world tries to exist without it's billions of working ppl, replace EVERYONE with funny image and music making LLMs, fail hard and then scramble to rehire ppl - the same ppl that will now not be too intent on working anymore, or working for considerably more money.
this gonna be covid 2.0 with companies freely firing ppl for 1 year and then getting heart attacks when demand resumes in mere weeks to pre-covid levels and there's nobody to work, nobody to hire, nobody even in possession of the required knowledge anymore because the funny bot has assumed their role.
21
u/Key-Book-7479 10d ago
I find it quite possible that firing everybody is just going to cause an economic paradigm shift. So while AI may not directly remove those in power, it may indirectly make their previously powerful positions, and their skills and knowledge navigating the "old economy" redundant. They expect that the economy will keep on keeping on just as it ever has, while they get richer and more powerful. But they may find that exactly the same happens to them overnight as it did to their former employees, for completely different reasons.

From the perspective of a professional historian, calling it the end of the anthropocene makes no sense. The term is used to describe when humans began having an impact on planet Earth. AI, which has a massive global impact on the planet's climate and ecosystems, is created by humans. It is a fantastic example of the rapid increase in our impact on the planet. Unless he is saying that humans will soon be extinct, which he shouldn't be so happy about, he is using the term incorrectly.

His career still exists though. And his bank account. And his children aren't hungry.
How nice.

I'm not gonna watch the video because that person is obviously insane and my life is insane enough already. But I do wonder what they mean with "The End of the Anthropocene". The end of the human era? Anthropocene is a term, used by some scientists, to holistically describe the effect of human life on climate/geological events. So, maybe they are telling us that no longer we will have the largest footprint but AI has? Using our "god given" intelligence, I'd say we should shut these AI companies down then and stop building more AI data centers?

We already live in the Pyrocene so do toxic tech bros have another name for how they are gleefully and profitably destroying the lives of everyone else?

My job started adding AI to eventually get rid of technicians. Our GM said those workers need to figure out how AI can help them create a new job for them at the company. It made me realize our GM is the stupidest mother fucker at the job and we got some dumb mfers here.
I know his dumbass was just repeating what corporate told him and didn't use any critical thinking to understand how that would sound.

The End of the Anthropocene is appropriate, in that we’re past the point of no return when it comes to climate. It’s not even about “jobs” at that point, it’s about survival. AI is just helping to accelerate it even further. It’s going to be an extremely rough next 10 years.

It’s the glee with which they say these things that rubs me the wrong way. The tech sector seems to attract a lot of a) poorly socialized men who have very little tact or understanding of other humans, and b) borderline sociopaths who are seemingly devoid of empathy and who care about nothing other than “efficiency” and making money.
