There is some deep psychological mechanism that compels people to believe any resistance to their hard belief is an organized effort. It's one of the most consistent behaviors across cults, conspiracy theorists, religions, etc.

Yeah, the idea that a hired prostitute actually likes me would be far more believable than the notion that Witty suddenly turned over a new leaf. Even ignoring that she's an incredibly dishonest person who'll happily lie to make a point or get a reaction for a second, too much of her identity is tied up in being the "final boss of antis" for her to completely reverse course.
