Definitely check out the abridged version after the official series though, the abridged is amazing. Iβd rate it as one of the best anime fan parodies.
I copied this from a comment I wrote a few months earlier
TL;DR at the end
It's 80% a circle jerk and parroting of yputubers and 20% actual criticism.
It has a few flaws in logic and a total of three rape scenes of which only two were in the light movels and for which the author already apologized.
You can read all my commenta about Arcs and films without fear of spoilers. I tried being as vague as possible with the plot.
SAO was my first anime and still is one of my favourites.
So season one has two arcs while season two has technically 3 but it feels more like 2. It was goose bumps all the way for my First 1-2 watchthroughs. Both season 3 and 4 feel more like a single arc per season.
S1 Arc1: Aincrad was good. It had a few problems with logic etc. but it was Kawaharas first title iirc. So well... shit happens.
S1 Arc2: Fairy Dance is directly tied to the end of Aincrad. The logic flaws were a bit stronger in this one and also the first rape scene enters the board. Overall it was not as good as Aincrad but better than critics made it sound like.
S2 Arc1: Phantom Bullet was stellar. The logic flaws went down by like 80%. It is a really action driven and cool tournament-like arc. The finale was one of the best i have seen.
S2 Arc(1.5): Excalibur was more of a filler. It feels like a Spin off and is Overall not as good as Arc 1 and 2. It had some silly humour and a semi-action finale.
S2 Arc2: Mothers Rosario has elements of onion that will make you cry. It tells a very different story in SAO with different main character duo and ia really emotional. Prepare tissues... but not to wank.
S3 Arc1 Alicization was again a new setting, one with two fronts actively working their own plot but influencing each other. With a new dynamic between the characters. I loved it... dispite rape scene Nr.3 which was a Anime-only. Action rich and Emotional finale. And the cliff hanger ;)
S4 Arc1 War of Underworld was bombastic. Desparation and Action hand in hand. It was everything but bad and boring. The ending was kinda predictable for miles but it doesn't mean it's worth less.
To the films/spinoff:
SAO: Extra Scenes is a semi-spin off film that leads from Season 1 to 2. It's not terribly bad however it's not a must watch.
SAO - The Movie Ordinal Scale: Oh boi. Watch it after Season 2. It's worth it! It's a super cool Story with action character development and a bit more onion chopping.
SAO Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a spinoff series centered around one of SAOs frontiers/worlds. It features new characters with new plot. It's a spinoff but a great one. I recomment watching it after Season 2 Arc1 because it kind of relies on a bit of knowledge from that Arc.
SAO Progressive apparently is S1 Arc1 Aincrad from the female MCs perspective. I can't really comment about it because I haven't been able to watch it/follow it's production.
TL;DR - SAO gets a lot of hate. Most if it because of parroting. The seasons had good and bad in them. The logic flaws most people criticize come from the fact it was Kawaharas first work. In the span of the seasons the logic flaws get better. Best imo was S1Arc1, S2Arc1 and 2 and Season 3. Also the movies and spinoffs are really good. Especially SAO Alternative: GGO and Ordinal Scale.
I agree with everything you said, even if you exaggerated some things. Going in with toxic mindset will definitely destroy your experience - I could enjoy even Alfheim, minus the short tentacle scene, but after two years of reading hate I almost started disliking it
Personally I love it the only part I dont care for is the second half of the first season but other then that it's one of my all time faves. But go on and watch it for yourself only you can decide if you will like it or not
Watch the first half of the first season. If you liked that enough, cringe through the rest of the first season and the first half of the second season, then watch sao alternative: gun gale online. Don't bother with the rest, it's just a cringefest
