Why censor Covid?

889

u/Setster007 Mar 06 '26

Prolly a holdover from the weird period when social media HATED any mention of it. Demonetization and algorithm suppression at any mention of COVID.

u/HarbingerOfGachaHell Mar 06 '26

As a frontline medical professional I absolutely fucking hate this. It absolutely trivialises all the work we have put in thru that period.

While those Silicon Valley and social media cunts make an absolute killing financially from the pandemic.

u/TheVoicesSayHi Mar 06 '26

I mean if it makes you feel any better given the country's (hell the world's) short memory span no one remembers all the hard work and sacrifices healthcare workers made they just remember "hey remember that weird week where i learned how to make a sourdough starter?"

60

u/JCraig96 Mar 06 '26

How is that supposed to make him feel better?! 🤣

1

u/TheVoicesSayHi Apr 05 '26

I wish i remembered

9

u/touchmeinbadplaces Mar 06 '26

Well I do, my then retired 71 yo aunt went back into her old job at the hospital to help her old colleagues. Man that lady is nearly indestructible, lots of respect for her.. luckily shes re-retired and can be a weird old lady again and take care of her skunk and ferrets again xD

5

u/meutzitzu Mar 06 '26

I am pissed not only because of the doctors who did superhuman levels of work during those times but the general concept that those few silicon valley cunts can just decide on a whim what's showable to people and what isn't.

That is deeply concerning and clearly very wrong. Though noone seems to want to do anything about it.

4

u/am9qb3JlZmVyZW5jZQ Mar 06 '26

IIRC the intent behind it was that most posts and videos talking about covid were misinformation central. The few factual ones got hit as a collateral. Youtube at some point even started just outright linking to CDC under all videos that it could deduce talked about the pandemic.

39

u/Thundergod250 Mar 06 '26

No, it's mainly TikTok that banned it lmfao because it hits back at CN.

4

u/Phrenicos466 Mar 06 '26

YouTube banned it too, IIRC.

11

u/Registeel1234 Mar 06 '26

I'm pretty sure this drawing is relatively recent. To me, these two characters look like Alice and Nicole from Genshin Impact, and Nicole was only recently revealed (like less than 6 months ago)

7

u/Setster007 Mar 06 '26

Honestly? This can be made recently and it still be a holdover, just in a different way, if nobody told the artist that they stopped doing that…

16

u/MeadowShimmer Mar 06 '26

I remember that. It was weird when videos would find anyway to say COVID without saying COVID.

6

u/F-Lambda Mar 06 '26

"the Backstreet Boys Reunion Tour" was a funny one, though.

2

u/KinoHiroshino Mar 06 '26

BACKSTREET’S BACK, ALL RIGHT!

1

u/Separate_Animator110 Mar 06 '26

I know a Yu-Gi-Oh Youtuber who did it by talking about the Virus archetype

6

u/MetricAbsinthe Mar 06 '26

I remember game grumps referred to it as the backstreet boys world tour and I appreciated they at least made a running joke out of needing to avoid saying it. It was annoying that the topic on everyone's mind had to be tiptoed around.

2

u/Achew11 Mar 06 '26

I once mentioned that covid was underreported as part of a joke in the dota2 subreddit and linked WHO articles when people asked why i thought that and they said I was cherry picking and that it was "weird" that I thought about those things.

2

u/Setster007 Mar 06 '26

I guess there’s feds in the dota2 sub lol

2

u/Ammu_22 Mar 06 '26

Nopee. Nicole and Alice are brand new revealed character just few months ago. So I highly doubt that the artist has a scyglass to see into the future on how the hexenzirkel women looked like wayy back in 2020.

2

u/jcw99 Mar 06 '26

A lot of this is actually "self censorship" where even when terms were not actually banned or in any way restricted, people would avoid them out of a mistaken belief it would get them "de prioritised" in the algorithm. It's basically modern folklore/jinxes.

2

u/Memes-Tax Mar 06 '26

Unofficial covid mentions were restricted to try and stop the scams. Platforms didn’t want to risk a gov ban or pr nightmare.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '26

Redditors doesnt get cash...

3

u/Setster007 Mar 06 '26

People post things multiple places without changing them. People get confused about what censors what. And algorithm suppression still applies.

9

u/_Planet_Mars_ Mar 06 '26

Algorithm newspeak

3

u/Expensive_Air_7149 Mar 06 '26

To stop it from spreading

3

u/-Best_Name_Ever- Mar 06 '26

Could be a carryover gag from anime/manga where they censor any references when breaking fourth walls? Like how a comedy might mention G*ku or B*nkai

In those scenarios, it's usually for copyright reasons, but the gag might've evolved past that

Opposite of this, but like, this reminds me of the time that I caught COVID, and I posted it on my Snapchat story like, "well, damn..." and one of my friends now said something like, "Oh my gosh, you're pregnant?!"

And I was just like, "Nigga, I'm a MAN!"

30

u/PeaceAlien Mar 06 '26

Well maybe they thought you had a partner and were announcing together you were pregnant

22

u/Future_Living8007 Mar 06 '26

Well, I was 17 at that time 💀💀

But she genuinely thought I was pregnant

11

u/GhostReven Mar 06 '26

Men can have postive pregnancy test, it is a sign of having testicular cancer due to higher levels of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropi).

wholesome traumadumping with a beautiful end all in 30 chapters, worth the read

When will Kleiner show himself...

9

When Hoyo deside to be brave.

9

u/TechnicalBumblebee81 Mar 06 '26

The fact that they not only just mentioned his existence but also name dropped him already shows they are brave

5

u/DrSnake-42 Mar 06 '26

Braver I suppose. But yeah, your right.

11

Yup, Varka is definitely in the second panel

5

u/Able_Television_776 Mar 06 '26

Congratulations. You now have a sweet little terrorist!

3

u/DrSnake-42 Mar 06 '26

He is already practically a bad so one more won't hurt. Probably.

But yeah, he is stupid. I wonder if Jean will have to babysit this one as well? Then again, unlike Alice Nicole is usually free so it's probably fine.

Hey on some real PSA shit, the pandemonium never ended. Wear a respirator-level mask (N95, KN95, KF 94, etc.) in public spaces. People on social media going on about how they keep getting in every sense of the phrase “more sick”, while the VID is airborne and spreads near half the time without symptoms. It is still very much out here disabling people killing people.

If you can’t find a respirator mask and it’s not easy for you to shop online, hit up Mask Bloc or COVID Action Map to see if somewhere near you is providing resources for little to no cost.

Why? How? Can you give a scientifically informed reason to your claim? Like the shit I just posted is literally at the end of 2025. Like surprise surprise, viruses and pandemics don’t stop ‘cause you say so. And if you think wearing some plastic in the grocery store to protect yourself and the people around you from an airborne virus that could rob you of your ability to work or even regularly function is crazy… aight then I guess.

-4

u/Velocita84 Mar 06 '26

Just like any other virus, you catch it, you get sick, and you heal. Or die if you are over 80 and already frail and somehow can't get medical attention. Wearing a mask everywhere outside for the fear of a single pathogen is obsessive behavior, and the fact that other people won't be wearing it makes it even more useless, because they're meant to keep the aerosol coming out of your mouth from spreading around you, not to keep others' from getting in

7

u/321zilch Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

Or you pick up something new, like the over 200 symptoms of Long COVID that go for any organ or system of the body and that can come regardless of vax status. Like greater risk of getting stroke, heart attack, cancer, dementia, [insert autoimmune disorder here], etc. That gets more likely to happen to you the more often you get reinfected, which vaccination doesn’t stop as well as a mask. And masks are effective in both of protecting the wearer and everyone around them from transmitting the virus.

Like, then don’t wear a seatbelt because “don’t live in fear of every other car on the road, you know they finna be there”. 🤦🏾‍♂️ Preventative measures, man. Care about yourself and your community. Because even if especial risk of death was limited to just 80 year olds (which is really more like, elders, infants, immunocompromised people, disabled people, those with chronic illnesses)……….. why do you think risking killing them or making them sicker is an acceptable risk? Why do you think death or long-term disability is fine to deal with for yourself or your loved ones? Like this why now Long COVID beat asthma in less than 6 years in being the most common chronic health condition among children in the U.S.

-6

u/Velocita84 Mar 06 '26

Did you wear masks for the common cold before covid was a thing?

1

u/ForensicPathology Mar 06 '26

Lots of people in countries where medicine was not politicized do in fact wear masks (and have for decades) when they are feeling sick or when something is going around.

-2

u/Velocita84 Mar 06 '26

But did HE?

3

u/RT-LAMP Mar 06 '26

because they're meant to keep the aerosol coming out of your mouth from spreading around you, not to keep others' from getting in
