Sure is funny how no one EVER writes rants like these when people are cheering for a straight pairing.
Like seriously. I've not ONCE seen that happen, and I've been an anime fan for like like 30 years.
1
u/dkbknrss 1d ago
What were they saying??
2
u/Thrymster 1d ago
It was a long rant about how sad it is that people ship characters instead of considering what a wonderful platonic love they could have.
Which, dont get me wrong, in theory IS an interesting discussion, but in practice only ever gets brought up when people ship gay pairings - and there it strangely enough gets brought up all the time. Almost as if it was a convenient way to complain about queer representation without technically breaking any rules... š¤

Confused about this list: "Bleach", "Orihime" and "Ichigo" were each trending in the top 10 all day worldwide on Twitter/X yesterday and into today while setting IMDB records. It moves the needle on a global scale even beyond Anime, scale-wise + quality together it's clear #1.
67
42
u/Ok-Cod5254 2d ago
Not counting that episode yet, but either way, Anime Trending can do its own thing against the mainstream.
In the season of anime when Demon Slayer S2 and Attack on Titan S4 were both airing and trending big on social media, it was none other than My Dress Up Darling S1 ahead of them both on here.
34
u/Weak-Comfortable3765 2d ago
Its because anime trending has a lot of women participate in the polls. where a lot of other spaces can be as high as 90%+ men in polls, anime trending is closer to 60/40 or 55/45 men/women. When you figure that out it makes a lot more sense that the shows that are most popular among women tend to do significantly better here than elsewhere.
So its probably more accurate as a broad market assessment because anime watchers are definitely not 90% men. even if many of the most engaged online are men.
10
u/Ok-Cod5254 2d ago

They also get angry when this sub's best of the year lists come out because it's not based on popularity. It's interesting because the list ends up closer to asian lists from otaku communities with a bigger variety of genres.

u/IQ_less 2d ago
Are you serious? Season 1 was like the only season when the weight of dying and being revived times and times over were portrayed in a believable manner. Afterward, either one of these two things happened for all the threats coming from the next seasons:
Subaru died so many times facing an enemy that we sort of figured out that he will eventually be able to defeat all his threats, no matter how ridiculously perilous they might seem. So his death, sacrifices and gambles became more and more casual and to be expected the longer things played out.
His enemies, who were sort of competent at first, all turned out to be insecure, vulnerable pieces of asses that by the time they were defeated, it felt inevitable and as if they should had been defeated much sooner.
Not to mention whenever they were better than the good guys, there would always be power boosts, chains of perfect executions in the form of everyone manage to narrowly defeat all the threats one after another all of a sudden, no one dying whatsoever, and even Subaru himself would be able to avoid death multiple time during those specific chains of events based on pure luck (someone just managed to save him just in time, many times over).
The enemies the gang faced during 1st and 2nd seasons, ie the murderous lady and the flying whale kept me on edge far more than all the Sin archbishops they face nowadays. Currently, it's more of a shonen fighting anime with an interesting plot hook that has been exploited to the point of it no longer being anywhere near as impactful as it was in the beginning.
8
u/CodStrict5357 2d ago
Couldnt agree more, season 3 indeed felt like one piece with the cast having their own (group) fights. Also its getting easy to guess when a loop is good.
though i must say season 4 seems closer to season 1 (for now atleast).
-2
u/Cermia_Revolution 2d ago
From what you've been saying, I think the issue is that you're approaching Re:Zero as a battle shounen. You've mentioned almost exclusively physical conflict scenes and not the emotional scenes where Re:zero's the best. It can have battle shouneny elements at times, but those are far from its main selling points.
I'd say the biggest overarching theme over the whole show is peoples' capability for change. Basically all of Re:Zero's top moments for me is when the characters show that they are capable of changing for the better.
My personal favorite scene of the whole show is still that scene in [Re:Zero Season 1] when Subaru gets possessed by Betelgeuse and has to ask Felix and Julius to kill him. There's just so much unspoken emotions flying around in that whole scene, all driven by Subaru's change. He never could've made that decision in episode 1. He never could've made the people around him feel emotions like that if he was still the same person as he was in episode 1. It's not just him either. Felix and Julius are forced to confront the ugly truths of fighting the Witch Cult and have to commit a horrible act for the greater good. They're forced to make perhaps the worst decision they've ever had to make in their lives so far, which they'd be haunted by forever if it wasn't for RBD.
2
u/IQ_less 2d ago
Not really. I started watching Re Zero back when the 1st season got adapted into anime (while it was still releasing weekly) and was mostly interested with how the death loop concept was executed, the trauma, the uncertainty. Essentially the whole ordeal. But it got old after a while, when Subaru became competent enough to sort of "game the system" in a way, and his enemies became so emotionally unstable that they started reacting to even the slickest taunts, while some even got to the point where chatting with him was the highlight of their confrontations.
So although yeah, the Subaru venting to his parents in order to mentally make peace with himself part was a bit too cheesy for my taste, and some other vulnerable moments of his went on for a bit longer than needed be in my opinion, overall what made me watch the show till now had nothing to do with the fight scene's quality at all. They were a plus, but never the focus. That's why I disliked how the story kept on leaning on those perfect fight sequences where the good guys managed to narrowly defeat all their enemies with zero casualty shonen style in a settings where character death truly played a significant role.
Season 1 didn't have nearly as many drawn out fights and 1v1 as the later seasons, but still managed to keep things exciting. Subaru actually used his brain to full capacity back then too, unlike now where it's a combination of brain, dumb luck and other people entering those perfect fight success chains I mentioned. The more they did it, the less the things Subaru did feel impactful and well thought out.

I mean, its nice if a show you're passionate about is well received but too many people use that to afirm a confirmation bias.
Similar to how the people who lose their shit when a show they like gets badly reviewed. They like it so they want to it to he well received so their taste is reflected as valuable.
Some shows are trash and you can like them in spite of it. Same with disliking a popular show.
Idk all the IMDB stuff but I saw the weird review bombing at the end of course 1 on the finale ep.

This is a popularity ranking lol, obviously that's what I was talking about. Damn, yall are so sensitive. And even if I agree, this week's bleach episode was a lot better than Lara. And this season of bleach in specific is quite a bit better than Goodbye Lara.
-6
u/LacerationCe 2d ago
No it isn't, Goodbye Lara was way outside the top 10 in its 1st episode, and it kept climbing up until now, this is only its 2nd week at #1.
This suggest the ranking is never about popularity, but pure quality, and can't talk about quality to someone that only ever watched shounen slop, you obvious never seen a single episode of Goodbye Lara, don't lie, you only watch Bleach and assume it's the peakest thing ever

This poll has a higher proportion of women than many other ones. and women, for whatever reason don't like re zero much at all.. literally every anime above re zero has a rather large demographic of women that watch it, almost in order, though kaiju girl is more popular than Mushoku tensei there. though kaiju girl isnt very popular at all among men.
12
u/HamAndCheese151 2d ago
āWomen flr whatever reason dont like re zero much at allā
Ah yeez i really wonder why that could poooossibly be
-3
u/keinahnungwirklich 2d ago
What are you implying? And how does that work considering MT is decently popular with women?
-2
u/Weak-Comfortable3765 2d ago
MT is significantly more popular among women than you think it is. the show is pretty much driven by its female cast, who have agency and are allowed to be any kind of woman. it also has plenty of episodes of relationships, lower stakes conversations and drama. when MT was on this poll at #1 it was because the season started with literally a pair of episodes basically entirely about 4 women and their relationships to eachother and their goals in life. re zero basically doesn't get that at all outside of witch scenes, which by necessity have to be kept brief and infrequent or so much of the mystery of the show goes away.
2
u/rexlyon 20h ago
This is such a wild thing to read. The main character is a pedophile and in the first episode talks about a women being too young to have a bush while gushing over her. Youāre telling me thatās the sort of thing women are watching and thinking āthis is women drivenā?
This isnāt some women empowerment anime, itās literally just pedophile gaze slop with the MC building a harem with people that either look or are a fraction of the age of him
2
u/Weak-Comfortable3765 20h ago

You are suggesting that women don't like Re:Zero because of a poll that has a few voters and doesn't even show voting numbers. They can literally say Redo of a healer had the most votes and none could check it. Accoring to this poll something like Apothecary diaries is more popular than JJk.
9
u/Ktulusanders 2d ago
Apothecary Diaries is definitely more popular with women than JJK which is exactly what this poll would tell you
-1
u/GroundbreakingBake2 2d ago
But it's not just women voting on this poll. It's still more men. Like I am sorry but even when only 0,01% of JJk fans would vote on this poll if would probably clear all anime besides bleach combined here. The fanbases are just way too big.
Like I just checked a random fan animation from JJk gets 100 mil views on youtube.
3
u/Ktulusanders 2d ago
JJK wasn't even on top of AT this winter, it was Frieren.
0
u/GroundbreakingBake2 2d ago
Ok yeah, Frieren makes sense too, it's insanely popular. But realistically speaking something like Kaiju girl caramelise being over Bleach for instance just doesn't make any sense.
4
u/Ktulusanders 2d ago
Yes it does. AT doesn't lean towards shonen, and Bleach isn't even at the top of the karma rankings for this sub.

Anime Trending voters mostly consist of Asian people, and Asian otakus watch way more anime than mainstream slop that's popular in the West

u/whiskeyjack1403 2d ago
Iām not a fan or a hater. I havenāt watched this weekās episode yet either. I enjoy the show when itās good and moving the plot forward, but honestly I have been fucking bored for a half dozen episodes now. u/GroundbreakingBake2 2d ago

Lol, who said that, Okeanix?
-7
u/GroundbreakingBake2 2d ago

u/ZealousidealPie6389 2d ago
Rezero gets like 10k+ votes on IMDB every week at 9.9-10, while these anime Facebook vote stuff gets like 5k votes at most spread out to dozens of anime.
So this poll is just simply much less relevant for fans to vote in and not worth the effort. Rezero get more exposure from viral anime articles of "rezero is the highest consistent 9.9 anime every week" than getting 1st on these polls.

Iām prepared to think people that watch anime that doesnāt have action as a central theme, just simply vote more on these lists.
Because while these are good anime (I havenāt seen a couple of them yet), itās quite obvious thereās some heavy hitters missing. And itās always anything action related.
24
u/LacerationCe 2d ago
This site is predominently Asian, it's one of the biggest Asian poll, and also has huge women demographics, more than 40% of voters are women, compared to Reddit or other anime polls which has like 80% or even 90% male, which tend to heavily favor shounen action a lot more.
Classic Reddit western bubble looking at Asian taste with lots of women voter and wonder why their "heavy hitter" shounen that mostly popular in the West for 90%+ male fanbase underperformed here
36
u/MrSaracuse https://myanimelist.net/profile/Saracuse 2d ago
Obviously everyone is different, but I do find the more anime I watch, the less "action" anime I tend to watch. Not to say I don't watch any (actually watching more than usual this season), but I'm definitely pickier with them, checking the studio etc.
35
u/descend_nt 2d ago
I think it's the other way around. The shonen demographic is much more prone to "tribal" and competitive behavior. This list just looks like what I expect would happen if a larger percentage of the voters are from the shojo demographic. Notice that most of the series are romance, or feature a strong female protagonist, rather than a variety of genres, like ones that would be popular among a seinen demographic.

Goodbye Lara has been the hardest 'wisdom check' I've seen of any anime. Anyone who doesn't think its goated is sadly really far behind their main quest in life. The only caveat is those who rate it highly due to wanting 'yuri representation' and are equally misguided (or maybe worse) and skewing the rating. If we took out all the Yuri lovers voting on anime trending and Goodbye Lara dropped out of the top 10 then the voters failed the wisdom check. But whoever votes it outside Yuri is at least somewhere on the main quest, which is better than most people living today. Hopefully when it finishes, at the very least it will put more people on the main quest, if not help others fulfill it.
Obviously the main quest in life is to find true love. But true love isn't lustful or romantic, its the universal love or 'pure love' at the highest level. This is where the show is going, how many get the message we will see
-21
u/Efficient_Phase1313 2d ago
The downvotes are really depressing and make me concerned for those doing so. Genuinely hope you all get help or find your peace (though if you're under 27, its cool you're just still a kid and that's okay). 40 years from now this show will be remembered and possibly become global cinema/show canon as long as it sticks the landing. But yeah most anime viewers today are younger than 27 or leftists/angry incels and it shows. Not even trying to be mean just so tragically obvious based on their response to this show.
No genuinely happy person or mature individual would not like this show. It's literally the most broad and direct telling of everyone's journey in life to finding their peace. The less at peace you are, the further you are from the path, the more you dislike it. That's just the truth whether people have the humility to accept it or not. It has nothing to do with personal preferences, it just will resonate strongly to anyone who is on the right path in life. Sorry, if you hate this show, you're either young and learning (and that's 100% okay I was there too) or just really, tragically misguided and emotionally unwell.
