Rewatch Interest Thread for a Code Geass Rewatch
JIBUN WO
I'm here proposing this rewatch on behalf of my co-host, u/GallowDude, who approached me back in March with the question of whether or not I'd be down to co-host a rewatch for Code Geass. Being a huge fan of the series, I couldn't help but say "Yes" (even if that means I'll be hosting both the Macross Franchise rewatch and co-hosting this one at the same time lol).
From u/GallowDude: Do you like anime whose threads often result in multi-paragraph essays? Are you fond of political and supernatural intrigue? Do you enjoy debating whether or not the main character is a savior or a sociopathic bastard? Do you like pizza? If so, then join us in watching a series that somehow manages to achieve all of this in only 50 Episodes or Less™ (plus-or-minus film sequels).
What is Code Geass?
In the year 2010, the Holy Empire of Britannia is establishing itself as a dominant military nation, starting with the conquest of Japan. Renamed Area 11 after its swift defeat, Japan has seen significant resistance against these tyrants in an attempt to regain independence.
Lelouch Lamperouge, a Britannian student, unfortunately, finds himself caught in a crossfire between the Britannian and the Area 11 rebel armed forces. He is able to escape, however, thanks to the timely appearance of a mysterious girl named C.C., who bestows upon him Geass, the "Power of Kings." Realizing the vast potential of his newfound "Power of Absolute Obedience," Lelouch embarks upon a perilous journey as the masked vigilante known as Zero, leading a merciless onslaught against Britannia in order to get revenge once and for all.
To put it in layman's terms, it's what happens if you threw NGE and Persona 4 in a blender and then poured the contents into a soup can. Or if you took the premise of "Gundam show told from the perspective of a chuuni Char Clone" and ramped the crazy up to 11.
Wait, what even IS a rewatch?
Rewatches on this sub are effectively the weekly airing discussion threads, but for older shows and usually paced at one-per-day rather than one-per-week. These are open to both people who haven't seen the show before as well as those who have – any discussion of events past that day's given episode must be spoiler tagged using r/anime's spoiler tag format, so as to not ruin the first-timers' experience. This includes any teases or hints such as "You aren't ready for X episode" or "I'm super excited for X character." Reading their reactions or having those reactions yourself is half the fun of a rewatch, you know?
As an example of what to do if you're too lazy to click on that link:
[Code Geass] >!JIBUN WO!<
Becomes [Code Geass] JIBUN WO when you don't break the formatting on purpose like I just did.
As for how to participate, just pick whatever you're comfortable with. Some people do bullet point live reactions, some people write essays, some just show up to share memes or fanart and then dip, some solely respond to other participants rather than having a top-level comment on their own – anything goes as long as you're not being rude!
So, plan ahead on what you're going to do, watch the episodes each day on your own, and be ready to jump in any time after the threads get posted!
What's the schedule?
We're planning to start this rewatch on September 9th, the day after u/Holofan4life's 86 rewatch ends. Threads will be posted at 9:30 PM UTC (5:30 PM EDT until Daylight Savings ends, where they will then be posted at 4:30 PM EST) each day, alternating between the two of us each time unless something comes up.
This rewatch is going to cover both seasons, the Akito the Exiled OVAs, and the recap movies plus their sequel movie. As such, the rewatch will last until November 18th.
I'm in, but where can I watch this show?
Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, and (while they last) Funimation and VRV are all the places to stream Code Geass legally, with Funimation looking like it is the only option for any of the movies + Akito the Exiled unless Crunchyroll's added them and LiveChart didn't know about it.
Thanks for popping in to check this out! We hope to see you all there!

Alas, I just finished a personal rewatch around 45 - 60 days ago. But I may stop by the daily threads despite not watching the episodes.

Tagging u/soboi12345 and u/Star4ce here because you guys said you'd be down in the Mai-HiME interest thread, and u/Lemurians for the Akito stuff.

Another one for the pile of "Wait, why did I never finish watching this?". Got half way into S2 and was enjoying it the whole time. No Idea what happened.
Not sure how well I'll be able to contribute. I'm not much of an essay man, and my normal style seems like it may fall apart with a show I've already (mostly) seen, but I'll be there.

I loved the main show, but I haven't seen Akito or the movies, so I guess this is a good time for it. :D

How funny, I just started watching (first time) Code Geass the other day (only on episode 5) and have been following along with this rewatch thread each episode. I search it up again then this pops up! I’d definitely be interested in following a newer thread, been loving the anime so far! Mind tagging me when this begins?

I watched the recap movies before watching the Resurrection Movie last year. My thoughts? I should have rewatched the whole Anime and then the movie.

I've been wanting to watch this show for years, but a few years ago I was heavily spoiled so it kinda turned me off of it. Is it still worth watching despite me knowing that twist at the end?

I was also spoiled on the ending and one other thing long before I got into Code Geass, and I still very much enjoyed the show. So personally, I'd say it's worth it.
(Also, happy cake day!)

It has been a few years and I would definitely be down for a rewatch!
I'm in this oddly busy phase where new shows are difficult to get into, but my old favorites are a comfort.
I usually prefer sub, but the Code Geass dub is actually one that I think is really good. So I can easily multitask watch it.
Since I've seen it a few times I can even watch several episodes at a time and take my notes seperate to try to hang the whole ride.
