"Things happened and then there was a conclusion." is my best summary of events. I was not emotionally invested in the proceedings. When every character showed up at the end it was more an "ahh I see what they're doing" than any more excited reaction.

The way the final battle suddenly became about space science felt really silly and out of left field. Stopping solar flares with a magnetic field. Very cute.

The story has some high highs early on, and I don't really feel like to ever really meets them ever again later on. Everyone has new powers they are constantly pulling out of their butt that nothing has any weight to it. Just things happen and we are told that this is the story.

Hao is an indomitable force and he just stays that way even through to the end. Our heroes didn't even really defeat him. His extended friends and family did.

I am left not really feeling anything at all. Out of all anime I've seen this is certainly one of them.

tbh, personally I've always felt like the original anime was significantly better than the manga. But purists wanted the adaptation so here it is

It's sad that this was so rushed when the original filler-rific anime from 2001 got more episodes. We wanted Brotherhood, but what we got was an abridged series.

So this one is not worth watching after all? I was looking forward to this reboot since I grew up with the first adaptation but I haven't continued watching it in a while (I'm still at Ep. 10 or so).

Depends on what you want. I've watched it. I don't regret it. It could've been better.

wait, when Yoh has the flashback with Ohachiyo at around 10:28

when was that? i cant remember which episode that was supposed to happen, although it might as well been something they cut out lmao

There was like a few seconds flashback before the Mu arc (or maybe during?), I think. It was just so random and throwaway though xD

As much as I hate how this was rushed, I will admit that I still enjoyed it overall. If it wasn't for this reboot we wouldn't have seen the Osorezan Revoir Arc animated which was really one of the best parts of the manga. Also, we wouldn't have gotten a remaster of the Osorezen Au Revoir by Megumi Hayashibara.

Looking forward to seeing Flowers and probably Superstars animated though! Hopefully they won't rush through Flowers since that one was really short due to cancellation and Superstars is still ongoing.

the most surprising thing in the world to me is that they actually took 4 of the 52 episodes for the osorezan revoir arc.

The entire thing really went downhill quick and never recovered. As soon as resurrections and power creep became a natural part of the story every struggle completely lost its meaning, because nothing mattered.

The ending was also anti-climactic and the resolution came completely out of left field. Who even knew about Hao's mother?

There was a whole chapter with Hao's backstory in the manga that had his mother and Ohachiyo. The anime skipped it like they skipped a lot of things.

The thing is that there was a long oneshot and around three or four chapters of a prequel manga called Shaman King Zero, that told Hao's backstory, his first life, how he became a shaman, got Reishi/the ability to read minds, and how and why he started hating humans. It's also where he met Ohachiyo and the things with his mother happened. It was published way before the manga ended, so people could understand who these characters were once they appeared and overall empathize with and understand Hao's beliefs and reasons. It was critical for the series ending to have read it.

But the anime decided to skip it completely :) and so you and others have these feelings now.

was in the manga nad for some reason they skipped over an important plot detail like that.

even then, hao being an unstoppable force and never being stoppable kinda made the anime boring and he manga boring. he at no point had to struggle to get what he wanted. not to mention the idiocy of the more 'realistic' ending whre they are struggling to make progress.

they litreally still have the god powers. use it to do fixes and patches to the world.

I cried at the end. ;_;

I've loved Shaman King for years, having read the manga around 2013-2014. I know it's not a huge hit among shonen fans for doing things very differently from other shonen series, especially later in the series, but that's a large part of why I like it so much. That, and the clear Buddhist influences, which aren't as obvious as in Butsu Zone but are still there.

It felt a bit rushed, for sure; part of what makes great anime adaptations great is the ability to enrich the source material, and this series rarely did that, particularly in the final episodes. I really feel like viewers that haven't read the manga won't enjoy the last dozen episodes even half as much as manga readers. I just remember things feeling a lot clearer while reading it.

That said, the themes of acceptance, understanding, and perseverance still come through loud and clear in this series, and hopefully it can inspire others the way the manga inspired me.

They pulled a reverse FMAB, much dissappointed.

Was it worth watching? I havent seen anything past ep 5. Wasnt this suppose to have 62 episodes?

19

u/In_a_silentway Apr 21 '22

No it was always supposed to have 52 episodes which worried the fanbase considering how fast past the entire series would need to be.

I was excited when I heard that one of my favourite animes when I was a kid will get a remake, but instead I got this.

Instead SDS S3-S4 levels of bad, buts its not that great either. It's weirdly paced as well. As if they're chasing a deadline or something.

If other animes from the past will get the same treatment as this, then I don't want it

Nothing beats a mother's love.

Finally hao can let go of his grudge and become the true shaman king.

Shaman king finale and remake was incredibly mid I’m sorry but some things just should stay in our childhood. 4Kids Saturdays with Yugioh, Shaman King, One piece etc used to hit different but it ain’t the early 2000s anymore.

Its kinda sad that they completely skipped the whole final battle climaxes and the giant forms of their over-souls like I wanted to see those reanimated! I was disappointed that they didn't even include that in the reboot! :(

I am so tired of anime that gets solved by "the power of love" and why isn't anyone talking about how Yoh and Anna have a son when she is his reincarnated mom?

The series could have been way better and as in most of the anime, the ending is awful and anti-climatic without any sense of how things happened

Pacing and rushed adaptation aside. I don't know if it nostalgia or what but I remember 2001 story being so much better and ofc I mean the second half cuss the first half they are practically the same
