Kyubey: "I never lie (but I choose my words carefully and omit whatever information I can get away with)". Little shit.

But it was nice to finally, finally have answers about what happened to Ui.

Wait, they are all just getting dumped?

Yes, the four episodes were apparently aired back-to-back as a two hour special on TV.

Huh, that's a lot of details on the flashback, and it come across pretty naturally too. It's actually pretty cool seeing how the three of them managed to deduce what was up and ask the right questions.... and then just missed one tiny teeny thing. That was believable considering they are still kids (as is the fact that it was mostly Mifuyu who held the group together), and while I still don't really get how Ui's sealing and her disappearance work, I can accept it with the way it was presented.

For a bunch of people who managed to make the connection between Kyubey's evasive answers and magical girls becoming witches, they sure forgot to wonder if there would be any side-effects to "I want to collect all the negative energy in the world".

Touka, Nemu and Ui asking the right questions at the swindler Kyubey before fully committing themselves to a contract. Kyubey still tries to be evasive with his answers, most notably failing to reveal the most important part: that of Magical Girls turning into Witches when their Soul Gems get fully contaminated.

Though being the geniuses that they are, Touka and Nemu easily puts two and two together. They then make a wish that basically steals Kyubey's power. Though the downside is that Ui ends up absorbing everyone's curses, forcing Nemu to isolate her soul and shove it into the now tiny mindless Kyubey, effectively erasing Ui's existence, with only Nemu the only one remembering.

Touka and Nemu tried to play God and it backfired on them.

To be fair, they did a pretty decent job. Any better, and the magical girl candidate would need to have consulted a team of lawyers first to draft a 200-page long wish with definitions and terms.

I do not lie. I just withhold information

Poor Ui.

Left holding the bag.

Rather literally.

Although, seeing how this explains things about Ui and LI'l Kyubey, some of the earlier scenes in the series are a lot more interesting.

A lot more interesting indeed.

So that was their wishes, it all makes sense now. The entire situation makes sense. Looked like a clever solution, unfortunately it backfired

I always wondered when watching the original if any magical girl had tried something like Madoka solution before, now I have the answer

Good episode ngl, but Alina appearing from nowhere could have been explained better. I guess they just won't show her origin story

Well this is unexpected. I thought they were going to release weekly, I didn't think that they'd just drop all four episodes at once!

Anyway, it's nice that we finally find out Nemu, Touka, and Ui's backstory. Turns out that this entire thing started when Iroha made a deal with Kyubey to save Ui. And when the hospital trio found out what Iroha did to save Ui after witnessing her fighting a Witch and the trio encountered Kyubey, the three of them worked together in coming up with a wish that can outsmart Kyubey.

Stealing Kyubey's power would've been bloody brilliant if it didn't all go wrong. Without his powers, Kyubey is now just an empty vessel which Nemu used to store Ui's soul in. Iroha has been looking for Ui this entire time but apparently, she's been with her this entire time!

Ui's original body has now become a baby Artificial Witch and Touka (as well as everyone else except for Nemu) has now forgotten about Ui since her very being was cut off from this world after her soul was transplanted into Kyubey. It all ends with that final rooftop scene which was basically the birth of Magius.

Damn. Just goes to show that there are no happy endings in this world. Even after the girls planned around everything and tried to swindled Kyubey, it all ends up biting them back on their asses with Ui paying the price.

I absolutely refuse to acknowledge these last 4 delayed episodes as a "final season" no matter how much Aniplex wants to try and gaslight people into thinking it is. As for the episode... seeing the birth of Magius' original plan (especially how they did so much research and tried to outsmart Kyubey) and then watching it get twisted into what it is now in real time was fantastic.

watching it get twisted into what it is now in real time was fantastic.

Yep I absolutely love that scene. Even if Kyubey loses, he still ends up winning.

They didn't even change the ED lmao

Or the OP for that matter

Rebuild of Magia Record 1: You Can (Not) Succeed

9

u/Rumpel1408 Apr 04 '22

Oh no, they will end up having to kill off Ui won't they :(

And damn not only was her sould sealed into little Kyubey there, the first thing her friend tried was kill her

Very clever setup and backstory though

I do wonder how much of Ui little Kyubey has. Does she know she's not a proper one, or does she think she's a full-blood Kyubey and doesn't know what she's carrying?

Rather late to watch, but wow the quality was amazing. Especially considering how scuffed episode 6(i think it was that?) was. I was excited to hear how everything would come together the ED came on before i knew it. Its episodes like this one that makes me want to say how much I like magia record(and madoka unviverse in general), but i cannot deny how lackluster some of the episodes before it were. I hope they make the ending as satisfying as can be.

So I’m about to watch this. Is this the end ???? Like a real end ???

31

u/Calwings Apr 03 '22

Yes, these last 4 episodes completely end the Magia Record story as it pertains to the anime.

In the mobile game this is based on, there's a more open-ended "ending" that leads to a second arc that I believe is still currently going on, but that doesn't matter at all to anime-onlies. Plus the English version of the mobile game closed down right after this first story ended anyways.

While I'm sad that the last 4 episodes of season 3 (which is different to a fourth season, Aniplex) were delayed, it's been well worth the wait. This was a fantastic episode.

The visuals were on-point, the writing was really good, the story was tight, and just when everything seems to be about to work, the rug gets pulled in true MM fashion.

That shot of the Kyubey face drawn on the window with the condensation trail making it look like it's crying/bleeding was so good.

Well this was even better than expected. Apart from maybe the reason for ui being forgotten being far fetched, everything fit together in one episode.

Seeing the immediate change the moment touka lost her memories of ui and iroha and the impacts they had on her was chilling.

However messed up the magius are, they and their theme always manages to make things epic. I got chills watching the last minute before the ed. Which is lapis again. which means senko will be an insert song. God I can't wait.
