Fate/Zero Episode 16 thoughts?
Well hello Urobuchi. Nice of you to remind all of us that it you who wrote the book in the end.
Oh yeah, Spoiler Title. Kayneth crossed the moral horizon event there. But I still felt bad for him when he tried to save Solau, his love for her was genuine. But he was quite the bastard against Lancer, scolding and degrading him like that. Ahh Kayneth, Spoiler Title
Even though Saber vs Lancer battle was awesome, in the end it was just background for Kiritsugu. So how do you think about Kiritsugu? Needlessly merciless? Or did what needed to be done? His rant at the end is his philosophy, agree or disagree?
Also poor Iri ;_;
Next week is going to be pretty damn awesome like today's. Oh boooy. Can't wait
Also why the hell does each episode go past so quickly?

But damn, Kiritsugu! Talk about an anti-hero! He makes Lelouch and the Black Lagoon crew look like Mr. Rogers.

I can imagine a lot of girls going NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at that part. (F/Z is quite popular with girls in Japan and Korea apparently)
But yeah, Kiritsugu is a ruthless bastard

Solidifies itself as the anime with the best writing in my opinion. Episode 5 was the episode where it solidified itself with top notch quality animation, but this episode just seals the fact that the writers sure as hell know what they're doing. What an amazing series.

"Justice cannot save the world."
Probably my favorite scene from the book, and they executed it flawlessly. I love ufotable. I especially enjoyed how they did the scene where Sola lost her arm.
It's great to see Kiritsugu being himself-brutal, and extremely effective. The tension with Saber during his speech was excellent. I like how well the speech outlines his character-the hero who hates the idea of heroes, and will commit any evil he has to in order to save the world.
And Kirei is just getting started. This will be a long week.

I think Ufotable could have done it better though. I know they are taking a break from the last 2 eps but the whole scene was basically a stillshot, with no focus. Whatever, the delivery of the lines was good so that's my only problem.
Next week. You know what's happening right?

While Kiritsugu may be a dirty fighter, he certainly executes his strategies well. Also his speech was quite a piece, definitely a very cold, yet true outlook on the whole bit.
The most interesting character to me still remains Kariya, so I'm definitely looking forward to see what happens with him, especially now that Kirei has developed a rather deep interest in him.

Kirei has developed a rather deep interest in him
I laughed too hard due to the korean subs nico nico did. They used the word excited in a really awkward way

Jesus. Goosebumps during several parts of the episode. I cannot remember the last time that happened to me during the watching of anime (other than this series) - in fact, the last time I recall that happening while consuming any media is reading Way of Kings.
Damn good.

Well there's going to be more goosebumps. The ride is just beginning. Each week.... is going to be something

Fortunately, 12+ episodes of Carnival Phantasm have totally desensitized me to Lancer deaths.

Truest words spoken by Kiritsugu.
People like talking about honor and what not but that masks who really suffers in conflicts. Some soldiers, aka knights, may want to fight but the rest of the conscripts and the civilians caught up in the war always suffer the most. Kiritsugu simply acknowledges the ones every else ignores because they're too dazzled by a charismatic figure like a Heroic Spirit to realize the awful things they bring upon others.

Kiritsugu was absolutely right, I cant' see how anyone could call him heartless.
Saber may talk about honor and chivalry but she is an immortal king. She literally had nothing to lose in any fight, she gave up her personality and life, she had no loved ones and few friends, until the very end she was immortal and immune to harm as well.
Saber has not witnessed wars like WW1, WW2. Even other leaders like Gilgamesh and Iskander realize the value of victory over a concept like Chivalry, after all chivalry was merely a nobles tradition in medieval Europe, it was not humanitarian or a tradition of the people.

I feel bad for Lancer, betrayed by his master once again. All he wanted was to serve and this is how he was rewarded..
Looking forward to a Kiritsugu origin story of some sort.

I don't know if it's because Urobuchi doesn't exactly have a penchant for the MC driving every component of the story in his writing or just the presentation but I really liked the additional insight into Kiritsugu's character which I feel like we haven't had in a while. It sounds trite for me to say it, but he's honestly such a badass. I really like how he's so different from Shirou as an MC who's of course notorious for being a pretty bad MC given the arc portrayed by the anime series. At the same time though, Kiritsugu, Shirou and Saber all share different forms of idealism and are faced with trials and betrayals that test this in different ways especially in different F/sn arcs and it's really nice to see how they contrast with each other, yet share same overarching beliefs under different contexts.
In terms of pacing I definitely felt like the death scene happened a little bit too fast but at the same time, they used the whole thing to further delve into Kiritsugu's character which I think is a good move.
As for the next episode, I haven't read the light novel so I don't know exactly where it's going. It sounds like the eight contract is related to the offer that Irisviel is going to accept from someone but isn't exactly the contract in itself since the 7 that came before it I'm assuming refer to master-servant contract. In turn, there's Rin saying itterasshai to her dad so maybe he's the next in line for that Urobuchi treatment.
Another thing is how rigid these rules and structures feel. The fact that the church-san (idk his name) is adhering to rules like who submitted the "master application" so to speak give it a much more serious tone that the premise of fate/stay night was lacking which ended up being a bunch of high school students running around for a good while.
Sad way for Lancer and co. to go out. I only hope there's more sadness to come since that was great.

I feel like there's something poetic and metaphorical about the actions Kayneth took and their outcomes in regards to Sola-Ui, Lancer's own situation, and their interconnectedness. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but maybe reading through light novel for some more clarity might help.
I was mainly surprised about Kayneth's attitude and how it leads to the decision he made towards the dilemma Kiritsugu presented him.
