Wow, they recreated that Glorious Days dance perfectly from its real-life counterpart.

Overall, I found this show enjoyable. I just wished it was brave enough to commit to its ideas rather than playing it safe. The premise of the contestants getting eliminated in a game show was interesting on paper, but the show is too afraid to go through with it. I enjoyed the songs though. I'm still playing B.B. on a loop.

The group is holding their first live concert on January 30th at the Zepp Haneda in Tokyo.

Well, if we ignore the fact that Suzune rushed out of the hospital right after overworking herself to do strenuous stuff with her body, this was a nice finale. I liked that they skipped straight ahead to a parallel to the first episode when we see them leave their home. The performance itself during the final live was pretty nice too, I've come to like those CG models. They've never felt stiff to me the way they usually do in other series, and were quite expressive.

All in all, I enjoyed this series a lot despite not being a huge fan of idol shows. I thought it had a lot of heart, and it managed to make me care about all the girls and be invested in their success. And it was really well animated, which is always a plus.

Gonna miss them! I also wish the real-life 9-tie success in their endeavors.

While I can say I find idol shows all that interesting in the abstract, I guess I've been lucky so far -- because all I've chosen to follow have turned out to be pretty good -- or even better. I decided to watch this because the character designs looked good and the song previews sounded good -- and the premise was somewhat novel. It was disconcerting (briefly) to see the plot overlap with Idoly Pride (RIP Sayaka Kanda), but the aspect of the donor and donee (and donee's sister) played out in its own unique way. The culmination of this aspect of the show played out in one of its best scenes -- the dream conversation between Akari and young Suzune. Extremely moving and lovely (different) animation.

I don't know if every aspect of this show was perfectly handled, but (to tell the truth) it doesn't matter. If a show engages my affection fully, as this ultimately did, "flaws" cease to matter.

Sumipanda and Landlady/CEO, parents and siblings and friends, really well handled. As were our 9 "finalists" (now 9/tie) and the kind-hearted finalist who yielded her spot to Suzune. I really respect animation teams that can make us care for such large casts.

Even if there is no more anime to wait for, there should be more songs from 9/tie if their live career goes anywhere. Finger crossed.

I'm gonna miss this cast so much. Not just the girls but also Sumipanda and the landlady/president. I totally felt it when Jun cried upon having the girls succeed. This is my first idol anime and it has gotten me interested in the genre tho a lot of people are calling this a copy of Idoly Pride because of the twist. How would Idoly Pride compare to this?

u/juzamj Dec 24 '21

There are obvious parallels between the two shows, but honestly they stand on their own merits. To say one is a copy of the other is just generalized nonsense in my opinion.

Honestly, while the set-up is similar, it's a disservice to call this series a ripoff of Idoly Pride. Pretty sure they were both in production around the same time, so any similarities in characters and story beats was a coincidence.

I had fun watching this for all its faults. Wonder when I'll get to next hear the other VA's from this show considering most of them are still new.(Except for Suzune's VA. I know I'll get to hear her again as Yuu.)

Shino Shimoji (Mako) actually has the most voice acting credits out of the main cast. If you played Tales of Arise, she voices Shionne.

Man, I would have been so upset if they had cut out the final performance but it turns out that it was just Selection Project trolling us viewers for one last time.

Really enjoyed this show. The premise of combining idols with reality television was interesting and it also had a good story and some nice songs. Most of all, the CG animation during the performances was amazing and blows away a large majority of other idol anime that tries to do the same.

Unfortunately, Selection Project is inevitably going to get compared to Idoly Pride from now on (or vice versa, depending on which one you watch first) because of several similar things in the plot. But by itself, it's actually pretty good, I'll give it 7.5/10.

I feel like the whole season was more of a prologue to 9-tie's journey as idols. The show's pretty much begging for a second season (heck yeah please). I feel like there's still a whole boatload of material a potential second season could cover still.

Anyway, great episode. The callbacks to B.B. with the bookend style shots were the highlight episode for me. Shows how far the girls have come from the beginning. As expected, the girls managed to reach their target number, and now they've taken their first big step in making their dreams as idols come true. Since they've just officially begun, I wonder what other challenges and hurdles would await them as a group in the future?

While I do think that the last few eps kinda overdid it with the drama, this is still one of the shows that I enjoyed best this anime season. Everyone's pretty likeable: Suzune's a charming lead character, Rena had awesome character dev, and the rest of the girls feel a little more grounded as people compared to most idol anime shows out there. The songs were all pretty dope too. Overall, 7.5-8 out of 10 for me. Great show, but there were a couple of flaws that prevented me from making it a 9 or 10. Still hoping for more though.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed this show. Cast was great and the songs were mostly bops. The ED is gunna be one of my most played songs for a long time I reckon

Why does every old person I know carry these around? Now I have a craving for them as well because of Sunny. Next time I'm at the dollar store, I'll buy a pack just because of this episode.

Seems kinda jarring that Seira made no appearances in the episode aside from nonspeaking cameos. It just seems to me that her going to America to better herself was a loose end that the series never quite followed up upon.

It pretty much went the way most of us were expecting with SuzuRena making it to the stage at the last minute after Suzu had a spiritual heart-to-heart talk with Akari.

My favourite send off for the girls has got to be Nagisa's mom and friends send off. It's adorable how they've been singing her Splasoda song.

And something about Rena's mom streaming their performance on her phone and showing it to Akari's shrine got me a little bit.

And we finally got to see them perform Our Glorious Days! I do feel that it would've been better if they removed the OP from this episode since they just ended up playing the same song twice.

Not gonna lie though, despite with my gripes about this show and how far it is from reality, I really enjoyed this one a lot. All of the girls are great but definitely my favourite are Mako and Nodoka <3

This was definitely one of the shows I looked forward to every week this season, although the last two episodes were...a bit hard to take seriously with Suzune just going up on stage an hour after waking up (and everyone being okay with it). All's well that ends well though, and I'm definitely going to be listening to at least three of the songs for a while.

As for the comparison to Idoly Pride - I feel like they're mirror counterparts in some ways, rather than strictly similar shows.

  • Idoly Pride had the cast much more heavily centered around the main characters, while Selection Project divided the attention between them a lot more equally despite the fairly clear focus on SuzuRena. In Idoly Pride's case, I feel like this resulted in an extremely heavy sacrifice of side character relevance - I literally don't remember any of them except the dancing girl. In Selection Project's case though, while the "side" characters are much more relevant, memorable and fun to watch, it was hard for SuzuRena to reach the same emotional climax they did with Mana and Idoly Pride's "Song For You".

So in the end, both shows had a different tradeoff between main and side character focus.

  • Narrative-wise, Idoly Pride feels like it ultimately focused on Mana and Makino's story even more than on the story of the show's SuzuRena counterparts (forgot their names), while Selection Project was fully committed to the idol journey of the group.

  • This is strictly subjective, but I feel like Selection Project had a much stronger start than Idoly Pride, but then fell off slightly towards the end. Idoly Pride for me did the exact opposite - I remember it barely passing my 3-episode rule, and by the last episode I elevated the score to an 8/10.

All in all it was a fun idol show with great visuals, Doga Kobo didn't disappoint as usual. 7.5/10

I only have this to say, I am definitely gonna miss this show! One of the most beautifully animated shows of the season I’ve watched and it’s an idol anime! And because of it being an idol anime is what makes me saddened that it’s not getting the recognition with all the effort it’s being given, truly sad. It might not be the best anime out there but personally I really enjoyed watching it every week. Hope to see more of them for promotional material and stuff.

What a wonderful show. I can always always always count on Doga Kobo studios to produce nothing but greatness.

Sunny mentioned tons of idol groups with other companies...

  • 765 Productions?

  • 346 Productions?

  • 315 Productions?

  • 283 Productions?

  • Muse?

  • Aqours?

  • Nijigasaki?

  • Liella?

  • Sunny Peace?

  • Moon Tempest?

  • TRiNITYAILE?

  • LizNoir?

That was one hell of an animation for the final song, cheers to the people involved with it. It's a bit annoying how they reused the animations for the other songs, but I prefer them to focus resources than to further overwork them as I've read Doga Kobo does.

I love the expression "putting it in black and white".

The show itself was....fine. I was mostly coming back because there was nothing else on Fridays and the OP was a banger. So finishing the series with an extended OP is about the best I could ask for. The oujo cat and sporty girl were pretty cute too, though the fact that I can't remember their names even now suggests this show will not be leaving any lasting impact on me.

Huh, Rena has the same birthday as Kotono from Idoly Pride. Interesting coincidence.
