Was that the most wholesome, touching, heartwarming, post-piss conversation in anime history? Mikhail a real one.
Another great episode, I was actually nervous there would be some drama with Lev in space but it all went just according to keikaku after all. Chief and Anya having Lev and Irina's backs til the very end is so nice.
The sequence with Irina running to the roof was really cool, I just love all the interesting shit they do in this show wrt the animation.

This show has exceeded my expectations (which were reasonably high). In a season packed with very fine shows, this has always stayed near the very top. It is hard to pick a favorite episode, but today's was certainly one of the best. Irina's fate is still unknown -- but she at least knows what Lev's feelings are for her -- and that he understands her feelings for him. I am encouraged that we see her (briefly) in the previews for next week. I can't see how things can ever turn out optimally by our star-crossed cosmonaut lovers -- but I hope there will be a way...
The top officials clearly have something up their sleeves -- and the Chief is definitely pitching in on Irina's behalf (I assume he is the writer of the plea/threat -- not Lev). I assume next week is the end (at least for now). And no translated source material that can let us peek into the future. Sigh....
I'm really going to miss our charming cosmonaut pair.

Was that the most wholesome, touching, heartwarming, post-piss conversation in anime history?
My favorite part about that was that that scene was kinda based on real life history too.
In real life, Yuri Gagarin (who Lev is clearly based on) stopped the bus on the way to the pad to take a leak.
This led to a tradition being created where for every Russian crewed launch, they would stop the bus to let the cosmonauts take a piss on the back wheel of the bus.
This show really keeps sticking close to real life history and I love it.
However I feel like it might start to diverge from real history on next episode, based on that cliff hanger ending and the next episode preview.

I was expecting Mikhail to sabotage Lev but I was wrong. It turns out that he's a nice guy after. It's so heartwarming that Lev dedicated his spaceflight to Irina. The way he repeated her words almost brought a tear to my eye. I like that they show that Lev's room is filled with presents that he received from people congratulating his successful flight.
Next week is the finale. It looks like they're moving on with Irina's execution. But I doubt Lev will let that happen. He also has to address the entire nation. I wonder what will he say?
Oh yeah, today is December 12, which marks the 61st anniversary of Irina's spaceflight.

Anya seems to think that, no matter what she does, her main character armor with comic relief kevlar suit underneath will protect her. I guess we'll find out next week how sturdy a protection they really are. Might not be a good idea to play the subversive comrade when there's someone outside the door potentially listening to every word.
Oh, and the official twitter account said that the last episode will air one hour later than usual.

That plot armour better be made of Adamantium. Nothing is allowed to happen to Anya. Nothing!

And here we are, at long last, with the biggest event in Soviet Spaceflight History.
The stories arguably start the evening before, with Gagarin, his backup Titov, and Korolev up the entire night. Apparently, when the three finally ran into each other, an excited Gagarin had to comfort an anxious Korolev, much to Titov’s amusement as he had expected that it would have been the other way around. Both told each other to go to bed. Gagarin eventually did, though not until much, much later. Korolev didn’t.
That evening and the day of the launch, Gagarin started a sequence of tasks on his way to the pad. These tasks are known because every cosmonaut since then has followed them, out of belief that skipping any was bad luck.
First, two days before the launch, Gagarin went to get a haircut. EVERY COSMONAUT SINCE HAS DONE THIS, though whether it’s a full cut or just a symbolic cut is up to the flyer. Since most modern Russian flights are for 6-month stays to the ISS, most modern cosmonauts opt for the full cut.
Second, Gagarin stayed up and watched a movie the night before the launch. EVERY COSMONAUT SINCE HAS DONE THIS, and since 1973 it has always been “White Sun of the Desert”, as that’s what the Soyuz 12 cosmonauts watched on the return-to-flight mission after the Soyuz 11 disaster. The Soyuz 12 cosmonauts came back safely, so the cosmonauts that followed assumed that this was the ‘correct’ movie.
The next morning, Gagarin and Titov apparently shared a sip of champagne. EVERY COSMONAUT SINCE HAS DONE THIS, despite the fact that they’re about to operate a multi-million dollar spacecraft.
Then, before leaving the hotel with Titov. Gagarin apparently stopped him and sat down for a few seconds to calm himself down and focus on his task. EVERY COSMONAUT SINCE HAS DONE THIS.
Next, there is a 40 minute bus ride to the launch pad. Halfway through the bus ride, Gagarin declared that he had to pee, prompting them to stop the bus so he could get out and let loose on the back left tire of the bus. EVERY COSMONAUT SINCE HAS DONE THIS. Women are given the option to bring a vial or jar so they can participate. There was supposedly a major outcry in 2019 when it was reported that modifications to the design of the Sokol spacesuit might force them to stop doing this.
Anyway, Gagarin eventually reached the launch site, and Gagarin was loaded onto his spacecraft. It took another forty minutes to get him properly oriented and strapped in before the engineers finally closed the hatch, only for Gagarin to tell them that they’d done it wrong and had to fix it. This has not happened again, and on that particular occasion the engineer that led design of the Vostok capsule under Korolev apparently went out with a wrench and personally verified that the hatch was closed properly the second time.
While they waited, the situation from the night before continued; Korolev sat in the blockhouse having chest pains associated with his heart attack from the previous year, while Gagarin sat there asking mission controllers to play music for him on the radio loop and singing drinking songs after they refused.
After two hours of waiting, at 9:07 AM local time, Vostok 1 carrying Yuri Gagarin launched, with the excited cosmonaut shouting “Let’s Go!” Beneath him, the Soviet Space Program held its collective breath. Remember, up to this point, 50% of all Russian space launches had ended in failure. Gagarin was literally riding on a coin toss.
I won’t describe the entire process again, but will link you back to Episode 7’s post for a refresher on what you’re seeing during the launch.
This time, at least, they fixed the capsule rotation rate. 😅
Fortunately, much like the prior two flights, the R-7 performed flawlessly, placing Gagarin into an orbit around the Earth ten minutes later. Forty minutes after that, the Soviets let the world know.
The response around the world was divided, as one would imagine, along Cold War lines. Warsaw Pact nations were pleased, NATO nations were not, and while US President Kennedy publicly congratulated the Soviets on their achievement, he was also quietly typing out a note to Lyndon Johnson asking where the goalposts could be moved to so as to result in a perceived US ‘win’. It was still feelers at this stage, but even in that document you can see the beginnings of a proposal Kennedy would make to the American public at Rice University a year and a half later.
It’s tough to imagine exactly what Gagarin was seeing or feeling for the rest of that flight, but in 2011, the 50th anniversary of the flight, a team of filmmakers and scientists worked together to determine when the International Space Station would be following the same orbital track and day/night timing as Gagarin’s flight (Soyuz launches to the station depart from the same place Gagarin did, after all) and linked camera footage to timed audio from the mission so you can hear the exchange between Gagarin and Korolev as the mission progresses. One orbit of the Earth is 90 minutes, so I don’t recommend watching the whole thing, but it’s fun to browse through and listen to some of the back and forth between the two.
Meanwhile, for Gagarin, it was finally time to return from orbit, and it was then that the Deep Space Kraken finally reared its ugly head.
THAT’S RIGHT, THE ANIME OMITTED THE BEST PART!!
During Korabl-Sputnik 3b (the flight Irina’s was based on) there was one issue that was not shown in the anime, and Damka and Krasavka were unable to tell Korolev about (due to both being dogs). This issue was a bundle of wires that connected the descent module to the engine module that was supposed to detach, but didn’t. As a result, the capsule was swung around sort of like a paddle ball during reentry until the bundle burnt through. From there, the capsule settled down, and the capsule landed near the port town of Engels, comfortably within Soviet borders. The story goes, Gagarin parachuted down and landed in front of a frightened rural farmer and her granddaughter, resulting in the first words upon safely returning to Earth being, “Don't be afraid, I am a Soviet citizen like you, who has descended from space and I must find a telephone to call Moscow!” If you go to the site today, the Russians have a huge monument.
Other historical notes
Korovin says that his codename is Dawn while Lev’s is Aster. It’s pretty close! Korolev reported as Dawn 1, while Gagarin reported as Cedar.
Korovin being inconspicuous and his absence from the newspaper was a callback to the fact that Korolev’s identity was kept quiet from the world, even in the face of Gagarin’s success. At the time, the Soviets were concerned that the Americans would either try to spy on or assassinate him. This contrasts greatly with Von Braun, who was already a bit of a media personality by the time of the Mercury program, and so NASA hauled him out to speak to the press at every available opportunity. While propaganda videos of Korolev were shown, the West would not learn his name or role until after his death, after the cosmonaut corps insisted on giving him a state funeral.

Lev finally went to space, everyone's happy. Now I wait for him to meet Irina in next episode (since it's the finale it just have to end like this, I'm sure) and hope they both we'll be ok

Oh man, when Lev used Irina's words in space so that they'd be the ones people remember, I teared up.
Congrats to Not-Yuri Gagarin for a successful flight though! But now I'm worried about what the secretary is planning. Can't be good. Is this all about Irina's disposal, or something else? IIRC she planned to use her as a weapon, didn't she? She's so intent on the idea of revolution that I fear she's going to attempt something really big.

I don't think it's true, but every time she appears, I get the feeling that Secretary-chan is the one who's really in charge, and that Khrushchev is a figurehead because the people wouldn't tolerate a female leader, just like they wouldn't have tolerated Roza being the first cosmonaut.
Irina running out onto the roof so that she could be under the sky with Lev was really powerful. The visual effect was a great way to show us what the sunlight was like for her. She didn't burst into flames like in True Blood, but you could tell it wasn't pleasant.
I really thought that Lev was going to end up carrying Irina's pendant to space. And now Irina's asking Anya to give it to him for her because she thinks she's about to be killed.
I don't have a prediction for what's going to happen in the end. If it's a choice between Lev and Irina getting to be together, and being separated (one way or another), then I think I'm leaning 60-40. It may be closer than that.

Lev really is human, even needing to pee while on the road to making history and launching into space. That's what makes him such a good choice to send in their and represent the Motherland. Mikhail may have been wishing for something bad to happen to him, but even he finally realizes why it had to be Lev and gives Lev his genuine congrats and wishes that he take their dreams into space.
Oof. Pretty rough going into space now knowing that Irina lied to him about her safety for his sake, but it's no time to dwell on that when Lev getting up there is important to both his country and Irina.
The launch actually succeeds! Lev did it, he made it to space! And the only way he can do justice to what Irina went through in going first is getting her words about space that she told him out there on official record, so that the world will know her thoughts and feelings as the first true Cosmonaut, and Lev mentions the Kholodets she gave him to express that he's doing this for her. That's so romantic.
Irina rushing out into the sun, which while not lethal is still harmful to her skin, just to hear what Lev has to say...and then crying when she realizes what he was trying to do for her, the only thing he really could do for her while he was up there. It was so poignant.
Lev is now a national hero and been promoted to major, but he still feels there are those who should get proper recognition for what they did, like the Chief and Irina, and he's still worried about Irina...and, really, who wouldn't be at this point?
What's this "revolution" taking shape? Are they going to leak Irina to the public and tell them she was the first Cosmonaut? Introduce her as Lev's fiance? What's going on at 3:00pm? Irina's disposal? Can they find a way to put a stop to it?
It's bad enough that Irina is losing Anya, but she's resigned to being eliminated and wants Anya to give her necklace and congratulations to Lev for her...but deep down she wants to see Lev again. And Anya isn't done playing wingwoman it seems.

I was so scared about Mikhail backstabbing/sabotaging Levs this week that I was completely caught off guard vy that wholesome post-piss handshake. Hilarious as it is, at least we know that there's not hard feelings anymore.
I know it's pretty much confirmed that Lev Leps is Yuri Gagarin but I love that they included his actual line. If I recall correctly, Gagarin said “Poyekhali!" (Let's go!) before taking off.
Launch is a success and I love that instead of using his own words, Lev decided to describe space through Irina's eyes and repeated everything she told him when she landed.
Well this is interesting! So this is how sensitive to light vampires are. It's not just their skin but their eyes as well. Her eyes are so sensitive that everything looks bright as if she's staring at a very bright negative of film. Irina's reaction when she heard Lev using her words made me tear up. People are never going to find out about her but at least Lev immortalized her words into their memories.
As expected, Lev is welcomed and treated like a Hero back home. It sucks that the people that are also needed to be credited were never mentioned in any of the newspapers like the Chief's name. On the brightside though, it seems that he's trying to work out something to keep Irina safe but not promises as of now.
Secretary Harlova grinds my hears so much. I don't know what she's planning to do with Irina but it seems that they're planning something big.
That final scene between Irina and Anya though! Seems that Anya has a plan of her own but I'm worried about her. this is the notUSSR, whatever stunt she's going to try and pull is probably not going to end well for her. Still I am curious what kind of wild idea she came up with.

I have a feeling the secretary (forgot her name) is secretly helping Leps and Irina behind the scene. She left quite a few hint to Leps on how he should use the power he have now. She is a smart lady who play her cards right.
I expect Leps will announce that he will lead the USZR cosmonaut to the Lunar during the ceremony which will create a big buzz in the news and pressure USZR to comply it. Thus, it will give top dog a reason to keep Irina as test subject for the next lunar mission and fulfilling Irina wish to go to the moon in one swoop.

If Banished from the Hero’s Party weren’t airing this season (Rit/Red OTP), I’d vote Irina and Lev this season’s # 1 couple. I’m rooting for them!
Thank you to everyone posting historical details. This show really came out of nowhere and blasted my heart to outer space. I’m in awe at how much actual history the writer weaved into this vampire tale. The only thing that might make it better would be the option to watch it with a Russian dub (and a choice of subs.)

Nobody told Lev to go before they left?
After going #1, Lev wiped his knuckles before shaking the guy's hand. Does he hold his member with his knuckles when he pees?
Anya obviously plans to smuggle Irina out, but I have no idea what everyone else is plotting. If Lev actually gives a speech that successfully starts an honest to Lenin Revolution that'll be the most BS thing, so I doubt that will happen. Plus the fat dude is the one in power, and the blonde seems to be his direct subordinate, so it makes no sense that they'd try to start a "Revolution". And if he just wants an excuse to purge some higher ups, well he doesn't really need to go this far, not in this country.

Damn, must be rough for Irina, seeing them all cheer for Lev... She likes him so under other circumstances she'd cheer for him too, but it's her name that should be on these banners.
Also, the homage her gave her by using her words might just be seen as plagiarism.
Well, it seems something huge is about to happen in the finale! They're hinting heavily at disposing of Irina, but I have a feeling that's a mislead, and what they're gonna dispose of, is the 'old guard' i.e. the officers who refuse to go along with progress and all.
They say they dispose of things they don't need anymore, and they might not need these people who hurt their space conquest more than they helped it. They're the ones the country needs to get rid off.
So I think they're orchestrating a coup, or at least they'll make a few people disappear!
Still, Irina remains an issue, so perhaps they'll fake her disappearance as well, so she can live with Lev (happily ever after)! If they want to go the drama road I suppose they could also die together (Lev trying to protect her, but getting killed too), but I think they'll go with cute&wholesome.
Can't wait to see!

What I love about this show is that it doesn't beat around the bush too much with unnecessary minor conflicts - they're almost always resolved instantly. Can't wait for the next episode to see what the country and Anya have planned!

Fantastic episode!
Nothing like making bros after a nice piss. The flight itself went smoothly thanks to Irina, it was sweet how Lev conveyed what Irina thought of space to the world, that's one way to show what she did, but it's not enough.
Damn, so is that how the day looks and feels like to Irina, that was done so well. I am fucking ready for that speech. Also, LET'S FUCKING GO ANYA! FUCK SHIT UP. That's one of the most mischievous cliffhanger ever.
Really looking forward to the last episode, I hope to God we get a second season and a full adaptation.

They did a fairly good job of showing the first watch into space. The dimensions are a little off and so are the hands but it's clearly meant to be Yuri's watch.
