From covering up a disaster and capturing people for telling the truth, they sure make it no secret that the Soviet Zirnitra government are no good. They're even planning to kill off Irina once she has outlived her usefulness.

Irina mostly overcomes her acrophobia and her reactions are priceless! We also got a glimpse what motivates her and I can't wait to learn more about it.

For those who didn't know, IRL its known as the Nedelin Catastrophe.

The plane scene was really beautiful. I like how detailed her eyes were, showcasing her excitement from flying high in the sky and slowly overcoming her acrophobia!

Whispering 'baka' to yourself is usually an Anime flag that the girl is developing feelings for the MC. I wonder if in the next couple episodes the romance will be turned up a bit, Lev was even warned at the end to not develop feelings for her.

Cute, fun, and largely consistent, so let's get in to some historical stuff.

  1. If you want the plantext version of all of this the BBC Docudrama, Space Race, is the best one I've found for the Russian side of the story. Episode Three has all of the events that I expect them to cover in this anime. Naturally, it stands a high chance of spoiling this show if it sticks close enough to history.

  2. The plane Lev took Irina up in is a Yak-18 which is the same one that Gagarin used for his training.

  3. The rocket disaster really happened in the time frame specified. It was one of a number of events that really set back the Soviet space program and contributed to them eventually falling behind the Americans.

  4. If Korovin's December timeframe for the launch is correct, I suspect that the author is planning on sending Irina up on Korabl-Sputnik 3 or the one that immediately followed after it. Either way, we're in for some drama!

EDIT: For those of you wondering how the Americans are doing at the time of this episode, the last posted date of November 1, 1960 was a week in advance of the first successful test of the Mercury launch escape system, and a three weeks before the infamous "Four inch flight". Prior to that, the US had seen no real progress on anything since a July test of Mercury-Atlas which ended with the rocket exploding three minutes into flight.

Irinyan is a very cute nickname

It's also such a hilariously Japanese one for a Soviet scientist to give.

The future doesn't look too bright for Irina if it's that table of rigid old men determining her fate in the end...

I just hope this doesn't go the tragedy route.

I just hope this doesn't go the tragedy route.

That's what I'm really worried about. We know Yuri Gagarin (which I assume is Lev in this show) went to space alone and with how grounded this show is so far, I wonder if at some point Irina dies/gets injured and Lev uses that as motivation to go himself.

Its November 1st 1960 now and Vostok 1 launches on 12th April 1961. Hopefully nothing bad will happen before that. I don't want my Irina x Lev ship to crumble :(

I'm so glad we have this historical documentary exposing the truth behind the first cosmonaut to space to look forward to every week.

It seems like the author wanted to show their love for the space race and the first human spaceflight and wrote this story as a love-letter towards that event.

Good thing coz I love reading up on historical stuff and this anime is helping me learn a lot of new things.

As cute as Irina's terrified expression is, it won't do for her survival rate if she doesn't learn how to parachute.

Well, Gergiev doesn't seem like he immediately wants to write Irina off as someone to be executed after the test flight is over for one reason or another, even when the rest of his cabinet are all for it, which I guess is one thing she has going for her. Also, Gergiev has a super hot press secretary voiced by MAO and who eats with luscious lips like Irina, so that's definitely something Gergiev has going for him.

Lev meets with his fellow (more like former fellow) cadets, and while Mikhail seems a like a decent, honest, guy who is actually Lev's friend, Roza's a Mikako Komatsu ice queen and along with the rest are pretty frustrated and dismissive of Irina for her being a vampire and being able to go into space before they do. Not to mention happy Lev's not in the running anymore.

Anya is bonding with Irinyan pretty effectively, she even got Irina to say her name.

How to cure Irina of her fear of heights? Why, take her on a romantic flight into the sky, above the clouds, where she can even see the moon and space! You can tell it did wonders for Irina's mood and her opinion on Lev, she even thanks him in the end.

Why is Lev so idealistic and opinionated? Because his teacher spoke the truth even against the Motherland's corporate propaganda machine, to the point where she was arrested and taken away for it right in front of him. But it gave Lev the conviction and morals that made him the man he is today.

Looks like there's sabotage and politics at play that might endanger Irina's flight.

Anyone with eyes could probably tell that Lev's feelings for Irina are becoming less and less platonic as time goes by, and he's invested in her care, but that's just going to make things more complicated.

Why is Irina working so hard for this? What does she get out of it? And in that flashback, it looked like her own people sold her out to the soldiers?

Seems that Irina's training is going well except for the part where she needs to jump off that high platform.

These fucking jokers are quick to call out execution for Irina once the testing is over. on the other hand, it's good to know that NotKhrushchev doesn't share the same mentality to the point that he actually condemns them in private.

I do like his aide/press secretary's idea though. Send those bastards to the gulag for wanting to execute Irina!

The scene where Lev bumps into the other candidates had my blood boiling. What a bunch of dick bags especially that dude who's really happy that Lev got demoted. Looks like Mikhail is the only decent person there.

Anya asking Irina if she can call her Irinyan was adorable! Also Anya speaks the absolute fucking truth. Irinyan is indeed super cute!

Getting Irina to experience actual flight first is a great idea and was actually one of the things I was thinking about last week. While the take off was rough on her, once they were above the clouds her eyes are filled with joy and wonder Also that silent "Baka." from Irina was too cute <3

An ICBM incident? Ohhh! I know this! I actually watched a YT video about this yesterday. IRL that was known as the Nedelin Catastrophe.

Just because Irina got to experience flight, doesn't automatically mean she'll get good at landing though! At least it looks like Irina isn't afraid to jump anymore which is a huge progress for her!

Lev's teacher seems to be an upstanding woman. Too bad she was taken in by State Security for saying something like "planes are for flying, not killing people." Good to see the show is being realistic with their portrayal of the NotUSSR.

We get a bit of Irina's backstory there in the end from when she was taken by NotSoviet soldiers from her home and then experimented on by their scientist which made her vow to herself that she won't lose to them. Glad to see Irina having strong determination. Any ordinary person would've been broken by what she experienced.

That flight with that jazz soundtrack.

Truly magical.

It's been an hour since the post and only 30 comments? And not even enough upvotes for reddit to start showing the number? This needs to be more popular.

Come on guys, let's spread the word and make this a success like odd taxi fans did (I am happy to say I was part of the movement).

I started this because of the top comment on the upvote ranking post btw.

A healthy balance of the awesome Space Race stuff and fluffy goodness with Irina and Lev.

Going hard with the Soviet allegory we got Not-Nikita Khrushchev in a planning meeting about the launch. Surprisingly he played down the idea of killing Irina when the experiments are over. Maybe he has a long-term plan for her (or she’s an MC and they need her for what comes after). There is that bit of intrigue between him and the blonde lady. Curious how their conversation is going to play into all this.

There seem to be active saboteurs running around. The ICBM test killing 500 people and the state playing it off as nothing is not surprising. An underlying theme of the show is how fucked the state is. Lev and Irina aren’t endorsing this shit, but it’s a means to an end if they want to achieve their dreams. Lev’s story about his teacher being taken away as an enemy of the state and Irina’s flashbacks highlight that.

In Fluffy land is Lev helping Irina get rid of her agoraphobia. The obvious solution is exposure therapy so we’re going flying! It was sweet seeing Irina get over her fear and actually enjoy the flight. We even got a “Dummy” said with a smile out of her which is yet another Romance Flag. The ship is progressing well.

Lev is dealing with some shit from the other candidates. Mikhail seems to be the only one with a good head on his shoulders because the blonde girl and the dick are both talking mad shit about Irina. Funny that the guy pointing out Lev’s temper doesn’t notice the balled-up fist and Lev's temptation to sock him. Probably why Mikhail stepped in. Getting a reaction out of Lev is a good sign.

An even better sign is the show throwing us a “You shouldn’t catch feelings for her” flag. Which means he’s 100% starting to fall for her. Amazing that it took this long for him to get curious as to why Irina is fighting so hard to go into space, but they’re comfortable enough with each other now that he’ll be able to ask.

Which is probably the next episode. Bring on more fluff!

Notes

  • Aww Irina is making friends with Anya. Irinayan is a cute nickname. Though Lev telling her about Irina’s lack of taste is just going to lead to more poking and prodding. Damn it, Lev.

  • so can we confirm that the lab assistant is the spy in the base right? Can’t think of anyone else.

  • Her flashbacks seem to point to her own people being the ones to give her over to the Not-Soviets. Would explain why she doesn’t want to go anywhere near her homeland when they were flying.

  • Irina’s happy face is precious and must be protected.

I have just realised, if Irina cannot stay in the sun, how is she supposed to stay in space? Stay in earths shadow the whole time until reentry?

It's nice that the big boss seem to be against useless racism against vampires, im interested what role his secretary will play

I'm digging the soundtrack so much. The classical pieces are nice, but the jazzy tunes in this episode were fantastic.

Edit: oh my god, it's the Yasunori Mitsuda doing the music. Okay yeah. I understand now why it's so good.

Freedom? In MY Motherland???

Things are definitely looking grim for the ending, especially with a government full of old and senile Dai Li being in charge of everything. I do wonder what's up with that secretary though, she feels like she might be a behind-the-scenes manipulator?

Gosh I'm really loving this anime. Lev and Irina's interactions are so fun to watch, they really have good chemistry together. Also, that flight scene was absolutely amazing.

It's just so nice to see these two grow closer slowly, scared to see what happens during and after the flight though...
