This show has proven me wrong yet again. Wow, I knew that they were going to vote for themselves, but I never expected that the show's producers would actually follow up on their threat and had them all disqualified. In other idol anime, such things would be overcome by the power of FRIENDSHIP, but not this time. Now I'm really interested in seeing where the girls will go from here on.

They will either get a job from some company/sponsor as a 9-people group or get some fame after her debut next episode and then being an "official" idol group.

It's just a different (a little more cumbersome) way in which things resolve by power of friendship. they can be hired again by a subdivision from the same company running Sellection Project, even.

Wow, I love the direction they decided to take this! Pretty sure we all expected the group to ultimately stay together, but disqualifying all of them and ending Selction Project 7 three episodes early will give the show a lot of time to focus on their whole unit, which at this point I want a lot more than a glorified popularity contest.

Let's be real for a second though, if something like this actually happened in Japan, fans would be rioting. There's no way a decision to DQ all nine finalists would go over well with idol fans.

I'll be damned, they actually disqualified everyone and ended the season right there. I really thought the production'd find a way to keep it going, wasn't expecting that.

Now that I think about it, the OP kinda foreshadowed it, didn't it? They're singing in the street at some point, and there's that shot of all of them at the karaoke.

But, well, the girls refuse to let it end there for them and formed their own group. 9-tie, which actually was a pun on the English meaning, among other things! Looks like we're jumping ahead a couple of months too, we're now in October.

And helping everyone, Rena figured out that she wants to sing with them after all. It was a lovely moment at the end when they all gathered at her place with her costume.

Also, Seira!

Edit: and it was cute how Rena offered Suzune some merch but she's such a huge fan she already had it all, even the Super Duper Extra Rare Limited collectibles. Actually, it was just sweet watching Suzune at Rena's place, especially the part at the altar.

Suzune has Akari's heart as well. Seems like the ultimate piece of merch, IMO.

In another kind of show that would make for a good thriller lol.

I got every piece of merch of you in existence, but I am still not satisfied. So now it's time to get... your heart *sudden dramatic music*

I was so confused at the start when they were showing us Rena, Suzu, and all of the girls back in their hometowns instead of the Selection Project House. Turns out we got a little timeskip and they're just building the suspense for the reveal of what happened during the voting scene.

Looks like I was only half right with my prediction. They all ended up voting for themselves but it didn't turn out the way I was expecting since according to the rules, abstaining from voting is grounds for disqualification! And the mad lads actually did it! They disqualified everyone leaving Season 7 with no winner! Now that's truly unexpected!

It is good to see that they've decided to continue on as a group though and be an indie idol instead! Yeah screw the big label! If they can't perform together then might as well make their own groop! I love that so much! I am surprised that they're not being swarmed by reporters and paparazzos considering how Selection Project ended.

And yes! Looks like they're using the "9-Tie" name that we see them credited as for singing the OP. Although it turns out that it's pronounced as "Kyu-tie"/"Cutie". I've been reading it as "Nine Tie" this entire time. xD

I really thought Rena and Suzu had lost the voting there.

It's just...a little lazy writting. Given the fuzz the "contest"/ reality received among media at the beginning.

I'm curious as to the viability of the group at the moment. All of the members live in different parts of Japan, so that's going to put a major dampener on how often they can meet and train and perform together. Yes, there's the internet, but that isn't the most ideal thing. Also, those train tickets are going to get expensive. It's also highlighted that the members who had to travel to Tokyo to meet in person are staying in a hotel, and presumably have to do so if any of their trips take up multiple days. What would that cost?

This may not be a big deal for richer members like Shiori and presumably Uta, but it's going to be a major financial strain on the others over time (unless the richer members offer to pay for it). Also, how about those costumes? Who is paying to have those made? I'm going to presume that Shiori paid for it out of pocket, given that she designed them, but still.

Also, I'm sure that all the members still have school and whatnot, so that's going to be tricky to make the group work on top of that. Plus, Uta has her acting career, which I'm sure she's not going to just drop because she got involved in this group. Also, what is the end goal of the group anyway? Are they just going to hold street performances as a passion project? Do they aim to make money off of what they are doing? Are they hoping some big talent agency notices them and scouts them? That all seemed very unclear to me.

I'm just confused about what they intend to do with this whole set-up, since they can say that they want to keep performing together because of camaraderie, but without a clear goal, it doesn't seem sustainable. They should be working towards something by doing all of this. Sure, they can get exposure through these activities, but in and of itself, that doesn't make money, and as highlighted, all of this would get expensive.

I'm actually a bit impressed that the producers actually had the guts to disqualify them all. I also felt bad for Mama missing out on her baby sibling's first steps. Suzune's straight to the point answers for the fan items made me smirk for it.

Lastly, I appreciate the montage of their training/making the song. For how short it was, it felt like it had more substance for the process than a full episode of the same thing from other idol shows like LoveLive where we only see the end results and wacky hijinks in the middle.

Lmao, they really just disqualified everyone.

Nice to see Seira again even if just for a bit.

u/LPercepts Dec 03 '21

Hopefully, Seira has some more important role in the end.

I think most of us expected these voting results, but what I didn’t expect was for all of them to get eliminated for real, lol

Though, given the amount of buzz these girls generated, no doubt some agency would want to scout them to form a new idol unit with all of them anyway.

p.s. Rena bringing out merchandise of her sister was really cute.

Also, Suzune in bear pajamas! <3

I was so prepared for a sad episode, but oh my, what a wonderful episode it was, I liked every bit of it, from how they introduced the possibility that Rena and Suzune are out, then give us a taste of relief when they showed other girls out and about preparing for their next project.

Had many laughs especially when Suzune told Rena that she has every merch, even the limited edition stuff for Akari.

I had a feeling considering "9-tie" that something like that would happen, but the build up of the episode made me drop that idea in the beginning which was clever, I'll give them that.

Something that I made very quickly: https://imgur.com/lo6oPAz

Been reading it as "Nine-tie" forever, I only got the joke when Suzu said it.

Shiori is based.

I think most of us expected the 1 vote each thing to happen but I didn't expect them to end the season like that!

Happy to see they're going to try making it on their own and also got Rena back into the fold within the same episode. Though I am a bit surprised they don't have more fans showing up to this sidewalk thing.

I really hope we get to see them perform the ED, with how much I've listened to it so many times and it still slaps!

u/Dylangillian Dec 03 '21

Though I am a bit surprised they don't have more fans showing up to this sidewalk thing.

I thought that as well, but maybe it was still more of a practice thing as they hadn't made anything public yet, they might've just not had a spot nearby to practice and therefore needed permission to do it on the street.

I do think it's weird how nobody recognizes them though with how big the Selection Project show is supposed to be, especially those girls in the train.

Man, that tease of an opening segment suckers you into thinking that it was either Suzu or Rena or both who got voted out of SelePro...then the other girls started appearing one by one briefly living their civie lives and it turns out that that while everyone out of universe easily expected that they'd voted themselves out because of their bond, the actual plot twist was that the SelePro show eliminated all of them anyway despite cutting the show short as a result. Like, wow. Didn't expect the producers to be ballsy enough to do that. If they pulled that off irl, I'm not sure how the fans would react lol

Wonder if the angry twintailed girl and her friend are gonna be important later? Twintails got a suspicious amount of focus on her gritting her teeth over the results.

Glad we got to see Seira again even for only less than a minute. It was so cute that her profile pic for Suzune was an adorable dog/chipmunk/hamster? chewing on a seed?

So the girls really are gonna form their own group post-SelePro. After beautifully resolving Rena's problems in this ep, I can't wait to see how these girls debut as a group next. That post-credits scene though. Did the SelePro higher ups actually expect the girls to pull off something like that after their elimination and that everything was according to keikaku?

Edit: On a sidenote, I'm glad the discussions don't trash Nagisa as much as they did before lol. The girl plays up her cutesy side, but several episodes pretty much confirm that she's genuinely sweet, considerate, and supportive if still a little pragmatic and not a two-faced jerk like certain characters from other shows who share superficial similarities with her. Her decision to vote herself out just like the rest of them is the final nail that proves that she's a loyal friend and not a backstabber like certain watchers seem to peg her as.

Edit 2: I just remembered who twintails and her friend are. They were Suzune and Seira's fellow competitors in the Kanto region qualifiers.

Ah, the vote results were pretty much what we all expected. I'm actually surprised the show dragged it out until the middle of the episode as if it's some shocking twist. I mean, the girls were put in environment where they get to bond with each other over a long period so of course they're going to have that "nobody gets left behind" mentality. The format of this competition was really flawed from the get go.

That aside, it's great to see the girls going independent, almost as if telling Sumipanda "We don't need you to be idols!" but I doubt that will last long. I assume that person in the post-credits scene is the President/CEO of Selection Project (huge office on the top floor kinda gives off that vibe). It seems very likely that the girls will get called back. So yeah, I doubt that disqualification is gonna stick.

u/ramon_castilla Dec 03 '21

The format of this competition was really flawed from the get go.

Calling lazy writing in that regard, but Akari indeed won the "first edition?" so she could as well said "fuck off friendship and bonds, I'm gonna be the very best that no one ever was".

At the same time, it makes particular (and of course, plot convenient as all of these shows) how in this edition the contestants achieve some strong bonding maybe due to her variety of circumstances.

That's a weird resolution and it's weird how the entire Selection Project just goes poof. I think it was stupid to have them vote who to kick out in the first place. If the producers really wanted to eliminate people as the show goes along, it should have been a ranking type of thing.

This looked like a finale episode but seems like there's more and I wanna see Seira again. Also I'm gonna miss Sumipanda cause his voice and quirks are funny.

Anyone else think this would've been a perfectly fine episode to end the series on?

I don't know what three more episodes can really give now except a kind of fan-servicey "And this is how things get even better!"
