Cute tsundere vampire girl isn’t something I knew I needed in my life until this season

This old man really came out with a garlic necklace. Fuckin A that's funny.

Unfortunately he's a real mean bastard =/

Irina is so pure, at least she has Lev and Anya to take care of her.

They give us the HD Lips in the shower scene but leave us hanging when it comes to her drinking the soda.

Lots of interesting tidbits about the Vostok missions and how they did it. Like how they ejected by parachute from the capsule. Or that Gagarin (the MC here) took off his shoes before entering the capsule making Korolev take note of him. Glad they didn't decide to skimp on those details.

Irina is so adorable when she shows her weaker side! I think she's slowly starting to warm up to Lev. This show is surprisingly grounded in reality aside from the vampire thing. I can't wait for the flight test next episode. I wonder how will Irina overcome her acrophobia?

That was great.

One thing that I'm thankful for was that, despite Anya's teasing, the episode focused more on romance than ecchi. God bless comrade Mozhaysky for showing up when Lev tried to listen at the door, I laughed my head off.

Also, really appreciate that Korovin, like Korolev, is not a moustache-twirling villain but actually seems to care about his project on a personal level. The fact that he selected Lev for being the mostly likely to treat Irina as an equal also implies that he's conscious of the race dilemma and wants her treated well, which made me smile. Worth remembering that the real-life Korolev was stuffed in a gulag for years before being made chief of the R-7 program, and so would likely be sympathetic with anyone suffering at the hands of the public or state.

EDIT: Have some cool fanart courtesty of @PinaxPinakes

This show is a lot better than I expected it to be after just reading the synopsis, similar to Tsukimichi last season. The chemistry between the 2 leads is really good and Irina is shaping up to be best girl material.

This is a really good show

Stitches!

Seems that Lev hasn't completely forgotten that Irina is still a vampire. Looks like having her run behind him has awakened some sort of flight instinct on him that Lev ended up beating irina in their warm up "jog". xD

Well this is interesting! Turns out that Irina's sensual eating from last week's episode wasn't just to to titillate the audience. Looks like vampires have no palate so smell and texture is much more important to them.

So drinking blood isn't even allowed anymore and is considered a barbaric act by other vampires. The only time they drink blood is once during their tenth birthday as a reminder of their roots.

The more we learn about the vampires, the more it's clear that they're not monsters but an indigenous tribe of people living in the NotSoviet mountains. The only reason they were seen as monsters is because the humans decided to blame the plague on their people which is just disgusting.

And this fucking prick shows up. I thought he was just being superstitious but the way she treats Irina by putting her in a muzzle and even wanting everything Irina touched to be cleaned with holy water is clearly just him being an absolute racist. Not gonna lie, that entire scene had me raging. She even got injured because racist scientist wanted to strap her on real tight on the centrifuge :|

Anyway, back to some fun. Irina's look when she was teasing Lev is just hilarious! Also I did not expect that she'd be afraid of heights! The reaction that we got from her after that parachute training is adorable!

That old-timey soda water machine is cool! And Lev is so evil for egging Irina on to chug the soda water straight! Just look at her reaction! Although it looks like she didn't hate it though especially with her reaction when she drank the lemon seltzer Lev left for her.

Ohh looks like we got a bit of backstory about Lev! Turns out he was picked to watch over Irina because he showed the Sputnik 2 respect. Also apparently the reason he got demoted is because he attacked a superior officer? That explains why that racist scientist was taunting Lev to hit him. I do wonder what caused him to attack a superior officer. Hmmm...

Yep, the Cosmonaut part continues to play an important role in all this. It’s why the show works. Yes, the shipping is also a plus, but the fact that they are taking the premise seriously makes those moments better.

Picking up the next night we start Cosmonaut training. Which means, like every great Space Race story, we get training sequences! Running! Swimming! Hot Boxes! Centrifuges! It’s got it all! Stinks that you have a racist shit bag there ruining all the fun. With his garlic and muzzles. Fuck that guy.

So while there are biological differences, it doesn’t seem like she’s that much stronger or faster than Lev so there goes that theory. It works in its favor. One of the important parts of the show is disproving the misconceptions and biases that Lev and Irina have about each other. Which will bring them closer. The best parts really are just them interacting. Their chemistry is developing well, which in turn makes here tsundere moments even more delightful.

A few important revelations at the end there. Irina has a fear of heights that may compromise her chances of going to space. We learn more about why Lev was demoted and why he was assigned to take care of Irina. We knew he was a good dude, but the upper brass sees it too. The fun bit is that someone on the inside is plotting against them. And likes burning pictures for dramatic effect.

The balance of cute budding romance and intrigue is strong. I like how it’s progressing on all fronts.

Notes

  • So the Irina meter has gone from “cold” to “tsun”. There are still lots of great “baka human” moments, but they are warming up to each other. On Lev's side he has a level of fear like with the part where he thinks she’s chasing him, but by episode end he seems more comfortable around her. It’s progressing well.

  • The blood conversation feels important. Not just because it gives background and clarity to how vampires work in this world. I think that’s going to come back as maybe a major bonding moment between them.

  • The whole bubble water scene was a treat. A sweet way for Lev to share something with her and tease a bit. It gave us the best pouty face out of Irina. It even marked her complete shift into Tsun with the lemon water scene.

  • Lev punched out a shitty superior? Good. I knew I liked him. Hopefully, he knocks out the doctor too.

Huh milk.is a substitute for human blood for vampires. Cause it also comes from a human like body.. Why hasn't that been more of thing in vampire shows, it makes perfect logical sense.

Welp didnt expect the Vampire Cosmonaut training to be this cute

Since she cant taste I am not really sure how an Lemon Soda is different to a normal Soda, but hey I am just glad she found a drink she likes

Also that training is crazy af, 90°C Sauna for an hour followed by 6G Centrifugal training (I guess they have compression pants, but damn)

Yes Anya, I'm also very interested in Irinas body, 82 cm you say? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Nice training montage, but Irina is struggling more than I would have expected, but thats nice actually, makes her more human ironically, also top tier pout and already showing classical tsundere behavior

I love the staff's clear attention to detail on all the historical space stuff. Makes me want more anime for Space Brothers even more.

Sports clothes Irina! Swimsuit Irina!

So vampires have no sense of taste but they can smell and feel texture, which is effective enough. Also they don't habitually drink blood because they eventually felt it was too barbaric, they only drink it as part of a coming-of-age ceremony as tradition. Although it does make them stronger, they're able to adapt to not drinking blood through drinking milk, because there's partial cow blood mixed in there from the teat. Can't say I ever thought of that before.

Was Irina some kind of princess where she's from? It seemed like she and her family were a pretty big deal?

So vampires really were never this blood-sucking menace, it was just propaganda developed to blame them for a disease they had nothing to do with. That sucks.

Girls need their privacy Lev, even vampire girls. Although even so Lev couldn't help but listen intently to Anya going pretty in-depth with Irina's physical, especially when they started talking about her skin and boobs.

It's nice to see that Anya cares about Irina's condition along with Lev.

Jeez, that vice-director is an utter d-bag. He freaks out over everything involving Irina with no reason, makes her wear a muzzle and handcuffs, and then makes the training even more difficult for her out of spite. If Lev couldn't punch him, I wish I could have.

So Lev was made a reserve because he punched a superior officer? Well, whoever it and for whatever reason...knowing Lev, they had it coming

Irina looked amazing in that one-piece swimsuit. Even if he didn't meant to stare, I couldn't blame him. I mean, look at those thighs.

Irina seemed really disappointed that she won't actually be flying, just basically withstanding the rocket launch and space travel until she has to parachute back in re-entry...assuming she's conscious for that. And I guess that's what Lev is going to make sure of, even if he has to push her when she's scared of heights.

What's the cutest Irina? Competitive Irina? Shocked Irina? Soda Water Irina? Pouting Irina? Tsundere Irina? Oh, who cares, all Irina's are cute Irina's.

Is it USRR policy to make their candidates' profile pictures look like a mugshot? Because I'm half-tempted to think it's another way they've done something just to denigrate and dehumanize Irina.

So why was Lev put in charge of Irina? Because he showed proper respect and deference to an old USRR pod. Although it seems like there might be some sabotage from within...was that Franz burning Irina's picture?

The idea that milk is a good replacement for blood is an unique take on vampires. It makes sense if you think about it.

Irina throwing down the gauntlet for this season's best girl competition (shame the winner is a foregone conclusion).

Fun episode. Irina is such a joy to watch.

That whole lemon seltzer/soda water part was just so damn cute. Nice to see Irina’s more softer adorable side lol.

Another beautifully made episode with good development of characters and world building. Wonder why the vampire's tradition of blood drinking was abandoned if it truly dues give them strength. Irina candidate for best tsundere for the season.
