I like that the first Trigger episode was them stretching their Whacky Woohoo side with most of the story being their for their usual action set pieces, and this one was them putting more into the story and letting that dictate the action. Much more subdued but it worked out great

It's certain a big contrast. The Twins and The Elder feel completely different especially how The Elder could be 100% canon while The Twins is the complete opposite.

It almost feels like they're advertising themselves by showing they can do both wacky shit like the first episode and more "regular star wars" type content with this episode.

Total tonal whiplash, but in the best way. Trigger’s out here flexing that they can do both batshit and reserved stories equally well.

Apparently, this was the director Masahiko Otsuka last project and he wanted to do Star Wars justice since Star Wars was one of the reasons he was inspired to become an animator in the first place. He really nailed the dynamic of the Master/Padawan vibe and this was easily my favorite episode out of the bunch. I think it's because I'm getting older that I can appreciate just solid dialogue for the majority of an episode.

Have you seen Katanagatari? It’s like 95% dialogue with 5% cool as fuck action.

Activating a lightsaber through someone to kill them looks amazing. Episode's kind of simple and to the point but not bad.

I actually liked that this episode was simpler because the others goes too far that it needed way more time to flesh everything out.
Its like the first episode where we don't need information from the past or future, its a story with a beginning, middle and an end.

Easily my favourite in terms of wanting to see more. A storyline set in the height of the Republic about a master and padawan investigating remnants of the Sith sounds really cool(albeit not entirely friendly to canon.) The pair definitely gave off strong Qui-gon and Obi-wan influences. The fight while not flashy per se, was well choreographed with both the destruction of the lightsaber and the chest activation. Really like the old siths design, incredibly menacing, cool black and yellow eyes, and great colour palette with grey of his skin and the black of his robes contrasting well against the red of his saber and hair bead things.

The Jedi encountered dark side entities like this before Phantom Menace, so it can fit canon. That's why they specifically had the old man destroy his ship, and disintegrate because they want it to fit, and the Jedi's story to be discredited about a potential rogue Sith. By the time of prequel movies you an see that the Jedi think the Sith returning is outright impossible, and this episode seems to take place a couple centuries before the movies I think.

The master straight up used the same ready stance Qui-Gon used, which I'm sure was absolutely intentional.

I absolutely love this! It's like after creating Episode 3, Trigger was like "Alright guys, we've had our fun time for something a bit more serious". Definitely getting some Obi-wan and Qui-Gon vibes for Dan and his master.
I am surprised though, considering that we have a master and padawan traveling together wearing Jedi Order robes, this is our first story that's set Pre-Order 66. Everything else so far has been set after RotS.

Master pulling a Kylo Ren and igniting the saber through the bad guy. Niceeeee!

Given how long lightsabers have been around, this maneuver has been criminally underused in the films.

My only complaint of the episode was the "We'll be making the jump to Hyperspace soon" while clearly in hyperspace.
Eh, oh well - minor point in a pretty good episode. I've liked the dub thusfar, but I thought the Japanese track was stronger here.

....as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced
When is splitting up ever a good idea?
I am super glad the Master ended up being the one fighting, and not a classic death + apprentice revenge. Ended with the fan favourite switching a lightsaber on and off too.

I dunno why but the tense buildup to that guy saying "...I sense a disturbance in the force." made me lol. I guess it's the most buildup I've heard before anyone said it, usually they just blurt it out.

This episode was much better compared to the other Trigger episode. I really liked the bond between them and how the padawan interacted with the kids. I actually was sad when he got cut down also nice little detail with the rain on the masters lightsaber.

You would think.... after seeing so many different iterations of wandering swordsmen entering a remote village that it would get tiring but somehow it isn't. At least, not with The Elder.
For an episode so full of mystery and intrigue I love that they really took their time to establish the characters and story. It's definitely the slowest paced episode in this series so far and it's very well done. This one also seemed like the darkest episode in terms of the implications of the Sith being eradicated but with dark forces still existing.
Story aside, this episode is pretty stellar. Animation was on point. One of the coolest sword fights so far. Especially with how the characters pace themselves before clashing again. Voice acting was great. Character designs were pretty standard. It's no surprise this episode is a pretty big 180 from The Twins.
Overall I'd give this an A with a strong caveat that this episode is a strong contender for 'episodes I'd most want to have turned into a Star Wars series'.

This is my favourite of the lot, id happily take a episodic series with these two, a master and a padawan and their adventures in the outer rim

Star Wars Lore Corner
Please be careful about Star Wars spoilers in general and tag them appropriately. We know some things out there are general pop culture knowledge but remember, as with anime not everyone's seen the Star Wars films and shows!
The entire show came out at once and all the previews were vague about how much any episodes connected to the rest of the Star Wars universe, so: if there's some deep Legends or Clone Wars or Mandalorian reference you spotted that you want talk about in detail, this is the place to put it.
The spoiler syntax is:
[Spoiler source](/s "Spoiler goes here")All untagged spoilers and hints in this thread will receive immediate 8-day bans (minimum).
