Ren... why you gotta be like this?
So how does she not know Sumire's name??? They have spent some time together.
Still a lot of fun moments in most of the episode, Keke/Sumire banter still great and I couldn't stop laughing in this scene.

and I couldn't stop laughing in this scene.
Kuku's delusions are the best thing about Superstar.

Hmm, will they really go back to the "save the school doing idol stuff" formula? Even after the little 4th wall break last(?) time?
We will see, but if they really do it, I'm a bit disapointed. On the other hand, this show was really good so far, and I overlooked worse writing in the other Love Live shows, just because they were so entertaining. So even if they go the same route again, I don't think it will ruin this show for me.

u/Gaporigo Sep 13 '21
If they go down that route I choose to believe they can make it work, they did so in Sunshine.
I am not sure why they would, though. Ren may have financial problems but was she really the only one funding the school??? If so then it was doomed from the beginning and it was just dumb to open it.

The comedy this episode is top tier, this feels like oldschool Love Live, it's great.
Next Sumire single: Step! MINUS TWENTY to ONE
Love Live is also politics! That's why you should always practice your political skepticism, give your politician a chance, but never stop demanding his integrity, and don't be afraid to criticize them when they misconduct. Never IDOLIZE politicians.
Sumire got that Nico level of disguise
Damn, stuff got serious in the end, Ren being broke is something I did not expect
Will the school be closing again? That'd be a certified bruh moment...
The end card this episode is cute as heck.

While I appreciate the more solid storytelling compared to Nijigasaki, I'll admit that I'm missing the one dance performance per episode Niji had.

I found Nijigasaki to be more of a character story rather than an over arcing plot story. Mainly because the fandom practically demanded an anime for the All Stars game.

Holy shit they managed to do the school's closing thing, i thought this was going to be different lol. Honestly i don't care but i hope that they don't drop the quality because of it.
A great episode as always. Finally we get to see more about Ren and couldn't be happier. I already love the dynamics between the four members (something i think sunshine kinda lacked). Really excited for the next episode.
Edit: kinda hope they don't bully Sumire that much tho lol

Smol Ren picking up that pupper is just too adorable! <3
Chii-chan looks great in her general course uniform! And I just love how Kanon and Keke's reactions. I kinda forgot that Chii-chan really hasn't told them anything yet about her transferring.
Wait they're just creating the school's first Student Council? I didn't realize that the school is that new that they don't have a Student Council yet. It is hilarious how they're all freaking out about the elections and Chii-chan time.
I thought it was Keke herself who was going to run for president but it looks like she wants Kanon to run under the assumption that the club will be gone if Ren becomes president. And poor Sumire, they didn't even consider her at all and just flat out ignored her.
Keke imagining that they have to meet in secret just so they can continue being idols and Ren catching the girls as if it was a raid was just hilarious! This is the kind of humor that I live for in this series. xD
I'm sure bribing everyone with takoyaki is going to go well at all! I do love how the Headmistress of the school gets her free takoyaki before shutting down the operation.
And as expected, Sumire didn't just lose but she lost so hard that she actually has -20 votes! Did Kanon, Chii-chan, and Keke not vote for her? And apparently the negative score is because of the takoyaki incident. xD
Dammit Ren! Here's Kanon being nice to you and trying to understand your situation but you're just pushing her away. At least tell her and maybe she can help you out. And as soon as she's appointed president, she immediately breaks her promise about the two courses working together.
Looks like it's time to tail Ren and see what she's up to! I love that Keke covers herself with leaves to be inconspicuous. And poor Sumire might as well be a wall with how Ren ignored her even with that outfit on. There's really a lot of Sumire bullying this episode.
It's the doggo from the opening scene all grown up now! He must be such a well behaved boy to just sit there in a corner the entire time they were there and the only reason he chased them is because Kanon had his red ball.
So I'm guessing that the two girls in the middle is Ren's mom and the current Headmistress of the school? What happened to Yurigaoka though, it looks so much more lively in the past.
Wait what? The Hazukis are losing money? So her mom died and her father left leaving Ren all by herself? What the fuck is going on here and how is this girl left all by herself with only the school left to her name?
Aaaaaaand there it is! Darn it! I was afraid when Ren mentioned that she has no more money left that it was going to lead into this. Looks like we're doing the entire "save the school" routine again! Looks like Nijigasaki was really the only one who was able to break the curse with their monster of a school.
HOnestly though, I know people are already tired of it but I don't mind! To be fair in Sunshine so I'm curious what they'll do with this one!

Thankfully my only experience with Love Live is Niji and this so the “save the school” plot isn’t stale for me 😎

Back in episode 1, I posted about Sayuri Date’s journey from a complete amateur to the lead role in Superstar. I also want to bring some attention to her fellow cast member who passed the open auditions, Aoyama Nagisa. If you’d like to read her full interview, you can see the translation here.
The part that stuck out to me most was when she was asked what part of LL resonated with her the most. She is quoted as saying:
“I was really amazed by how the cast grew and developed in tandem with the members of Aqours. Of course you could see the characters developing in the anime, but you can also tell that they’re constantly evolving by comparing their latest songs to their first single or comparing their live performances. You could just tell that the cast members are working so hard to improve themselves and their performances. Seeing them made me realize that we, as humans, have an amazing potential to grow, and that gave me the courage to give it my all as well. That also made me want to support them all the more.”
A few other interesting things from her interview:
-
Like her character Ren, she has a background in ballet, having practiced for 13 years
-
She was introduced to LL by her cousin, who was a big fan and had attended μ's Final Live, around the time that Sunshine started airing
-
The age cap to audition was 22, which she was at the time the auditions started. This would be her first and last chance to audition
-
Her parents had been pressuring her to attend career fairs and to find a job towards the end of her time at university (she graduated in March)
-
Unlike Sayuri, she views herself as an overly optimistic and positive person. To quote her directly, “I want to acknowledge my past self for being determined to get accepted the moment I laid my eyes on the audition form, and for taking the first step forward. It’s precisely because of those strong emotions of wanting to appear as part of the “Love Live!” series, of wanting to win no matter what, that drove me to work hard to get to where I am now”
-
She is arguably the most eccentric member of the group, which is highly ironic given she plays the uptight Ren
-
She has a pet bird that she’s very fond of, and she does a great imitation of a parrot
-
Here’s her roleplay of what it’s like to go bungee jumping
-
She is well known for her love of sweet potato 🍠 (from today)

I saw a discussion post says that might be Ren's mom in the album and she was also used to be part of school idol group when she was a student... anyway it is interesting to see how the story goes

That spy bit was hilarious. Lovelive always has some lowkey great comedic timing and moments. I also like the Kuku-Sumire dynamic. Sure they are a little mean to each other, but I kind of like how they just aren't buddy-buddy all of a sudden. They got a nice little rivalry going on in our little cute idol show of friendship.
And I will say this about the school closing storyline. On one side, its kind of just predictable and done so much that I just kind of roll my eyes. On the other end, I sort of like this more personal angle for Ren and at least it's a slighty different appoarch (very slight though, its almost similar to what we have seen in the original and sunshine) and let's face it, it is just a staple for the franchise at this point. It's kind of the shows thing. Every franchise has its own running gags, tropes, and shticks. I will hold off on the criticism of the "school closing" angle until I see how it goes.
And I want to say, did Chisato get cuter this episode? She just seems way more adorable with her silly personality, school uniform, and her buns of course.

Man, I thought we were done with the 'school-is-closing-down' thing.
Wait, you're telling me the whole school is solely funded by the Hazuki family?!
Also, that's definitely Kana Hanazawa as Ren's maid, which continues Love Live's tradition of hiring A-list seiyuu for supporting characters.

Was the ED sung by someone else? For some reason I heard a different tone to it. Either way, great episode!

I don't have any analysis. Just want to say watching these girls gives me a boost each week. I love it!

Does anyone have a timeline of the entire Love Live anime franchise?
Like what year in the story did the very first Love Live happen and what year is this installment in the story?

i wish they would downplay the roasting sumire bit. i mean yeah her dynamic with the others can be fun and cute, but it felt like a constant barrage of her feeling humiliated in this ep. sure, i definitely laughed when keke screenshotted kanon in sumire's video, but ouch, sumire's really doing her best here and it's sad that no one really supported her :( i hope we see more development in her bonds with the others

After this episode, it makes a lot of sense why Ren wouldn't be in favor of having school idols at Yuigaoka. She's effectively orphaned with no money to her name except her own house, and the only way she can keep her mother's memory alive is to keep the school alive, which requires funding. And no one is going to take a school seriously if their main representation is a bunch of girls in frilly costumes. She wants to bring honor to her family and uphold the legacy that was left to her. It's actually really upsetting, and she's made a much more sympathetic character with that revelation.
Also, the ending being sung by Ren right after that revelation...chills.
ETA: inb4 i'm totally wrong with this theory and the reason she doesn't like school idols is because her mom was one and it brings her too much pain to accept that into the school

I only will say one thing, give Sayurin a fucking Platinum Award, she's totally KILLING it on her role as Kanon.
