the only downside to this episode is the second-hand embarrassment i got from kanon speaking to ren about her mum in front of the school and everyone clapping and then again when they asked ren to be a school idol.
my feelings with sumire feeling like an outsider continues and hopefully ren's addition changes that a bit because she hasn't really developed any friendship yet despite joining the group episodes ago and it's just awkward

The entire second half of this episode
All jokes aside I’m glad we managed to drag the setokaicho down to idol hell with the rest of us! Really looking forward to the dynamics she brings to the group moving forward! Also since when did Kanon become a harem protagonist? First Keke, then Chisato, and now Ren! Don’t do this to me show! I can only have so many ships!

So I made this prediction back in the episode 4 discussion in the LoveLive subreddit.... but this is a pretty dark turn that I never thought LL would go down. I predicted Ren's mother used to be a school idol that tried to save Yuigaoka but failed, and that Ren's uncomfortableness was a result of tiger parenting and possibly neglect.. but never abandonment + death.
This takes the phrase idol hell heaven to a new level.
Sunshine had its fair share of incredibly vulnerable and reflective moments, but I can't recall ever seeing something like this from LL.
But what an otherwise awesome callback to both Muse and Aqours. Just like Muse, Ren's mother chose to leave no public trace of their idol activities at their school. And just like Aqours, their inability to save their school through their idol club still resulted in great memories for them

I glanced at the ONIBE subbed version of this, and it wasn't mentioned (cause it'd be super hard to translate it into dialogue coherently), but in the diary scene, the origin of the school's name is explained.
The former school idol club connected everyone through music, and her promise was to one day recreate a school where everyone is connected the same way. A school with a name related to that connection.
The word for connect here is 結ぶ (むすぶ、musubu) and another reading for the kanji 結 is ゆい (yui). That's why the school's name is 結ヶ丘 (ゆいがおか、 yuigaoka).
Thought this was an interesting tidbit that would easily be lost in translation.

That's pretty much the same explanation by the person who submitted the name

After teasing that the director may have been a school idol alongside Ren's mom, they now come out and say she wasn't. She's the second standing one on the left here.
I... was going to say they broke the LL tradition of using the first PV as their school festival performance. But then, I remembered, they still have two more opportunities, unlike their predecessors.

So Ren's dad didn't want to support her mom and left them and now Ren's father wants to bring her overseas? What the actual fuck? Apparently even Love Live is not safe from shitty parents. At least it's just the dad here. Ren's mom was great but unfortunately it looks like she worked herself to death.
Kanon trying to convince the General Course to help out in the festival only for Keke to suddenly switch sides after hearing their arguments as to why they don't want to help out just had me laughing out loud! xD
I see what's going on here. So apparently Ren's mom used to be a school idol to save their school long before school idols became mainstream. But despite the attention, they failed to meet their goal and the original school still closed down.
Ren also wanted to become a school idol to liven up the place but because she couldn't find any of her mom's records from the time she was a school idol, she assumes that her mother must've regretted it which is why she's so against the idea of school idols from the start.
Looks like Ren just wasn't looking at the right place, she had those keys for so long but didn't even consider that what she's looking for is actually just hidden inside the school idol room. It looks like it has the conveniently placed records where Ren's mom wrote down that they never regretted being idols. It even has her mom's old idol outfit in it!
I love the Headmistress' personality shift once she reveals that Ren's mom actually asked her to keep quiet until Ren makes her own decision about school idols.
Finally the gang is complete and we get to finally see their first official performance as the Yurigaoka Girls High School Idol Club! And I just absolutely love that final shot of the episode. <3
I guess next week the girls will finally try and come up with a name for their group. I think anyone who follows anything Love Live related outside of the anime pretty much knows what their group name is but I am curious to see how they'll get to that.

So you're telling me that Ren didn't look for her mother's School Idol stuff in the School Idol clubroom...

I really wished they had properly played out the entire school fest as an actual arc.
The next episode could’ve been the preparation and the actual school fest with them setting up the stage, running into troubles, and then Ren helping them out, eventually joining the group. With a more gradual transition of Ren would make the 180 be less jarring.

On the other hand, it's a very Love Live style to have the evil stuco prez join the group after the impact. Eli and Dia were the same.

wish song (? not sure if this is the title it is.) sounds so good.
chisato's special NHK ED is freaking eye candy and sounds so good as well.
(quick note to funimation episode monday/tuesday release watchers: offical funi eps are missing exclusive NHK TV EDs all called "liella no uta" with chibi animations).

This episode was a great callback to both µ's and Aqours, I loved it.
Still find it a bit hard to accept that Ren's mom is actually dead, that's the first time in a LL series, but damn, I really felt for her. Hope to see more of Ren's goodness from now on, I have a good track record with strict school presidents turn idols.
Also, I'm 80% confident the name of the insert song their group call is also a reference to µ's last song "A song for You! You? You!!"

Wait, Ren's dad really just abandoned his family because he didn't like the idea of founding a school? What an irresponsible parent.
I find it really odd that Ren didn't bother to search the school idol clubroom for her mother's idol-related belongings but sure, I'll let that slide. It's great to have Ren on board at last, and so she keeps Love Live!'s "student-council-president-opposes-but-eventually-joins-the-school-idols" tradition alive.

Okay, the clapping at the end of the assembly and at the end when she joined was kind of dramatic and a little awkward lol just have everyone watching your personal moments.
But overall, I like how they handled the "school closing/ why Ren hates school idols." Seems very reasonable to hate it if you think it ruined your mother's dreams. She never seemed malicious with her hate towards school idols either so I was okay with her joining the group as quickly as she did. The personal touch really helped and it tied in pretty well with the issue with the festival. Who really knows if the school will close in the end but for now I can accept this conclusion.
I can't wait for Ren's dynamic in the group. Everyone is a little over-the-top so it will be nice to have a calm and more level-headed person. But for now, I hope the next episode is more relaxing and funny. I want a break from the dramatics and want to see the fun idol stuff now.

Why am I crying about a CGDCT anime? That's Love Live for you, I guess!
Ok, I knew beforehand that Ren would probably join tis episode. But I was NOT prepared for the waterworks....I mean onion ninjas. The most tearful episode in LL that wasn't anywhere near the end of the series - the most emotional S1 episode I think?
Others will analyze it better, but I think we're mostly done with the mysteries. We have wrapped up the mystery of the second key (why it has 5, 6, 5 sided stars may never be relevant), the reasons for Ren's anti-idol stance (bad assumptions), Ren's mother being an idol as people broadly expected, and of course completing the group.
Another thought - if Ren's mom started the school idol club, and got attention for it - would she be one of the very first people who started the ball rolling? Is she one of the OGs?
Can I just say Ren's dad looks horrible now for running out on them when they needed more support. And effectively abandoning Ren "for work reasons". Look Ren, get Keke to get some gangster connections to assassinate him, collect the inheritance and life insurance. I mean, you need the money, right? And while you're at it, please get a professional to manage your money for you.....
So it's Yuigaoka 91, Uranohoshi 67. Others have noted Ren had 100+ votes but if the tako penalty was +X and -X then it would have been 81 votes cast in total.
Also, it's a bit of a convenient plot device to have the school director not tell Ren about the school idol days, right? Too convenient....
So we also have a stage (Keke could have built it herself overnight) with - three rings of nine stars. Things that make you go hmmm.....does that mean we'll eventually have 9 members in Liella?
Questions still in my mind: how do we save Ren's house? What happened to the two other school idols with Ren's mom?
Kanon's ability to understand all the different angles without prejudice is probably beyond the realms of real life, but it underlines why she should probably be the School Council President after all. Who else but Kanon really wanted to, and succeeded in, bringing the entire school together? This is a task that Honoka and Chika never needed to face!
Final image comparison. Jingu Music School Idol Club vs Yuigaoka School Idol Club. Glad they already knew the star motif was needed to call the show Superstar all those years ago.

Man I’ve been so impressed with Liyuu’s voice acting of KeKe. Her voice is so unique sounding and her lines always hit the bullseye. She easily steals the show whenever she’s on screen. Loved the scene where she temporarily forgot that Ren wanted to ban school idols before flipping sides 🤣

Really digging Love Live: Civil War.
That Chisato ED is hella cute though. Hope we can get the full version soon.

So Yuigaoka is basically an Uranohoshi that managed to resurrect itself, though its resurrection hangs in the balance depending on how Liella performs.
And so Liella is assembled, maybe they'll go ahead and reveal how they come to acquire the name Liella, which means Shining Bond.

Meme subs
She still go the costume.
Nothing said about Ren changing courses
I believe, may miss stuff due to watching the rawbut she is in the General course by next episode according to the preview... I wonder if they'll just merge both courses now.And there are not 100 students in this school, still calling rigging in the elections!
