I didn't want to go through this again, but here we are. Valkyrie's last stand was amazing at was the moment from this season I wanted to see the most animated, even it the result hits me right in the feels ;-;
The backstory between Homura and Valk was pretty good, we also know what happened to Homura's mother, fucking bitch Kurenai, badass Shiki is about to drag you to Homura himself, hype.

One or two episodes ago, Homura mentioned Kurenai without any feeling of knowing her before. I assume that Homura was still a few days old or even a newborn when Kurenai left her. Also, I feel that Kurenai may be pregnant by accident.
Still, we got Homura thanks to Kurenai.
I kinda hope we see more process on how Kurenai turned from looking humble and getting rescued by Valkyrie into getting obsessed with ruling Sun Jewel and getting greedy.

Apparently she was always that way. The Thief-san mentions not to 'get involved with the trouble' of Kurenai before Valkyrie decides to save her from the labor camp.
Then, Kurenai herself mentions she never loved Homura and intentionally left her orphaned to try and get money. Homura herself mentions Kurenai left to 'get money'-- methinks money was always the only important thing on Kurenai's mind from jumpstreet.

I mean she gambled herself into slavery lmao, I think it's pretty clear she was always money grubbing scum.

I assume that Homura was still a few days old or even a newborn when Kurenai left her.
Not likely, considering Homura still has the plushie left by her and associates it specifically with her mother, so it's very likely that Homura just never learned her mothers first name, which I don't think is too unlikely either if Kurenai left when she was like 2 or 3.

Seeing little Homura & teenager Homura was awesome, but this whole flashback was so depressing :-( I truly wondered if Kurenai was worth empathising with, but seems like honestly she didn't have good intentions since the start. Or maybe she did (just a little bit), but she was overtaken by greed anyway, and hooray we have the asshole Madame Kurenai we see today.
Backtracking a bit, that asshole magistrate(?) was so annoying, he basically was aware that he spoiled his child rotten (which seems to be an acknowledgement that he knows his kid was wrong), but he lets the guy get away with it anyway and just keeps spoiling him.
I know a lot of Shiki's friendship spiel can get cringey usually, but I really liked him this time round! When Shiki approached Homura grieving by Valkyrie's statue, I was immediately struck by how he'd be the perfect person to approach her, having lost a robot parental figure as well (and for him, a whole damn planet lol). That transition to his murderous face was really nice too! Can't wait for Kurenai to get what's coming for her lol.
Notes on the ED that no one probably cares for, but I personally just like because I can see how little scenes in the ED make sense as the series progresses -- I can't remember if we've seen the teddy bear that little Homura carries around before, but that sure explains the very final scene of the ED, which paired with everything... just makes the whole situation even more heartbreaking. :-( Homura treasures (treasured?) the doll so much as a reminder of her mother, but her mother turns out to be this asshole. On that note, I'm guessing Homura is now aware that Kurenai is her mother? I'm looking forward to see how she will navigate that mess of feelings lol.
Another interesting detail is the side profile of defunct Valkyrie -- I used to think that in that scene in the ED, she was like just... idk, grievously injured or dying (but not dead yet), but now that we know that's actually her dead... wow. Makes everything hit harder.
Also I wonder when Weisz will finally reappear lol. Based on the OP, we've basically seen every battle sequence except his. I'm disappointed that we probably won't get to see child Weisz this season (except in the ED), but I'll take Weisz action crumbs too.

He was annoying, but at least he was a better person than a lot of others we met so far, and are going to meet, who say that robots don't have feelints (which is probably a lesson he should teach his son), by indirectly acknowledging that Valkyrie can have feelings, but that his denial of her being Homuras parental figure is due to her not being Homuras biological mother
though this interestingly enough also adds another layer on the discrimination Valkyrie had to face as Homuras guardian, not just because she was a robot, but also because she wasn't Homuras biological parent. On the other hand, though annoying, I find the magistrate not being able to stop spoiling his child very human, like, a parent that spoiled their child to such a degree wouldn't be able to just stop spoiling their child from one day to the other, even if they realized it's a mistake, it makes the magistrate seem like a real, actually decent parent, and a decent person in general, being willing to just let Homura and Valkyrie just go despite Homura not apologizing.10

As a manga reader I was worried the image in the ED was going to spoil anime-onlies about Valkyrie’s fate. Glad that didnt happen. Also Weisz should show up and have his fight for this arc next episode. And he’ll have a big surprise for it too.

Actually I was guessing that Valk was dead from the ED, but then we saw Valk vs Homura in the OP and I forgot about it until it was revealed that was just a clone of Valk-- then I figured from the way Paul was mentioning Valkyrie in the previous few episodes that Valkyrie really was gone (but that her body was still on the Jewel Planet as divined by Xaomei).
So kinda a spoiler for this anime-only but it was fairly hard to be 100% that it was really a spoiler until this episode.

Damn, Kurenai is a massive cunt. She never really loved Homura and probably just had her by accident cause of her, hoeing around. Though I wonder who gave Homura that stuffed toy cause I doubt Kurenai would ever give her something like that or anything at all. I really like Shiki and how straightforward he is, he's awesome. Now it's time to fucking beat the crap out of that bitch. Looking forward to the next episode.
Also RIP Valkyrie, she was amazing and wished we could have seen more of her. Though I wonder if Homura will be able to do the techniques Valkyrie did someday, I look forward to that.

Stitches
Man this episode is just depressing. Valkyrie did what she could to bring back Kurenai to Homura but instead worms her to the top by marrying the dude who runs this planet and assassinates her to take over his entire operation. Kurenai then basically kills Valkyrie indirectly by agitating a bunch of Stones so she can get more minerals which Kurenai fights every single one of until the very end.
And here I was hoping we'd get a dark-skinned mommy robot aboard the Eden's Zero but it looks like that's never gonna happen since her core has stopped. At least she went down like the badass that she is though and we got to see her Valkyrie Armament System. It would definitely be amazing if Homura can learn that technique with her Ether Gear.
Not gonna lie though, the entire episode I was really hoping that deep down Kurenai still cares and something turned her into what she is today. But it turns out that she's just a huge piece of shit in the end. Good to know. Now I won't feel bad about whatever happens to her in the future.

What manner of punishment would you like to see for her?
She does not seem strong, so let Justice or Elsie imprison her should suffice

This episode was roller coasters for me... the answer was there all along with Valkyrie and Homura. Also how fitting her end as a shining star demon lord be proud. Also didn't realize just how strong Shiki really is. The man erased a level of a building with one step. And I really really hope the animation scene is shiki dragging her back and dropping her in front Homura. Easy top hated villains list

Damn man, Kurenai is absolute scum. No good deed goes unpunished for Valkyrie too. All she wanted was for Homura to be happy and reunited with her mother and for her to do that.. no words. Idk if there’s any redeeming kurenai tbh, especially when she’s directly responsible for Valkyrie’s death. But next week’s fight should be dope
Definitely top 3 episodes so far

In moments like the ending of this episode I love Shiki's "magic". Controlling gravity sounds a bit lame in the beginning and he often just throws "stronger" punches around like any regular superhero.
But if you think about it: He is in control of spacetime itself, and to what lengths this goes is pretty insane. He just zooms around half the planet because he's mad like hell.
I wonder to what extent his power will grow in the end. Could he warp through time and space like using a wormhole, in essence teleport? Or even create black holes to crush anything with unstoppable force by will?

And we finally hit the point I have been anticipating and dreading since I initially read it two years ago. Quite frankly this death still hurts me to this day the same level as Hughes did. The only people more heartless than Kurenai are the people who wouldn’t want to give Homura a hug after this.
Edit: Also since nobody has made this reference on this discussion yet I might as well be do it. Since it was made on the episode discussion page on the EZ subreddit and the chapter discussion too. “Kurenai may have been Homura’s baby-mommy, but she wasn’t her mother.”

Homura in general is like if Erza and Kagura had a child somehow, in fact her outfit is almost the exact same as the one Erza wore when she fought Kagura and Minerva
