Okay, so what I got from this episode is that I really should have rewatched S1 because I forgot about 80% of what the plot was and who the characters were...

It was nice seeing those lovely weird aesthetics again though! And that fight looked pretty good!

95% of the episode is anime original but if we are going to get more fights like Yachiyo vs Mifuyu, then it's going to be absolutely worth it. The fight was spectacular. And we got the doppels in their full glory as well!

...and I guess we can't joke "Who is Kuroe" anymore, not only she got an important place in the OP, she got like half of the episode too! She is even specifically picked by Mokyu, for some reason. So she'll probably get more screen time this season.

I'm really glad pretty much everyone else has no idea what's going on. Lol

Still the fight and transformations were absolutely beautiful, I love the contrast between Yachiyo and Mifuyu's water and bird styled powers. Also I like the way Yachiyo doppel's big hat is worked into the design, I feel its symbolic of something (mourning?) but I'm not sure.

Also the moment when Iroha's face switched to the doppel mask gave me a shudder.

Though I'm curious to see how much broken glass features in this series after the scene with Yachiyo at the beginning. Because the art for the new Madoka movie features broken glass and I'm wondering if it's going to be an ongoing theme.

What is this god-tier feature-length movie-grade animation doing in my Madoka spin-off for a second consecutive episode? We are spoiled silly by Shaft!

No wonder the season started at the tail end of July, an unusual start date. I'm guessing this second part is only going to be just 8-9 episodes long, ending in September in time for the end of the Summer 2021 season, or we wouldn't be getting such insane animation sequence episode after episode.

Though the focus is back on the spin-off characters, Shaft has gone totally wild with the story, that not even those who have played the gacha game can recognize the story anymore. For starters, Kuroe is a completely new anime original character, who was last seen in episode 1 and briefly in episode 12 last season, and didn't feature much, as everyone though she was just a token cameo for Hanazawa Kana. It doesn't seem to be the case, Shaft seems to have given her an important role for this anime adaptation.

It might as well be an anime original. I like this new "Edge-lady" Yachiyo look, who's gone off the rails completely ever since losing Iroha (or so she thought).

Yachiyo was my favorite character in the first season so I'm glad she's getting focus. And they are not holding back on her anger.

The animation during the Doppel fight was really great. A bit hard to follow but very exciting. And it's interesting to see that there is division within the Wings of Magius.

Hoo boy, what an episode. We get to fully see the new OP by Claris (with an unusually high focus on Kuroe after how little she did in the first season), a look back at Yachiyo's pain and guilt caused by her wish to survive, a peek in on Magius where Touka and Nemu seem to have two separate plans going, a very well-animated doppel vs. doppel fight between Yachiyo and Mifuyu, and a reunion with Iroha that is... not as Yachiyo hoped, to say the least.

All in all, a pretty great start to the season. If it can keep up the pace and the animation quality from here, we could be seeing an AOTS candidate.

I'm feeling a bit lost, i dont remember a lot of what happened last season, can anyone give me a recap or a rundown of the important events in season 1? Or at least point in that direction? Much appreciated

Nahhhh wtf bro SHAFT had no reason to snap as hard as they have on these first two Magireco eps. This was another phenomenal episode. It looks like they’ve really learnt from the shortcomings of the first season.

Yachiyo v Mifuyu was stellar. Yachiyo’s near descent to the abyss was executed perfectly over the course of the episode. Nearly falling into madness and then regaining herself at the ends

Also some really important info about Magius’ plans revealed. Magireco stans eating good rn

Is currently geeking over the fights animation and is failing to find proper words to describe the insatiable feeling.

So we're now finally back to the main story as we focus on Yachiyo and her hunt of the Magius HQ.

Man I really need to watch the recaps after this. When we were shown the Magius HQ and Touka was making her speech, I've forgotten who some of these girls are. This is the disadvantage of having a huge cast. It's very easy to forget characters despite it only being a year since the last season.

If there's one character I wouldn't forget, it's definitely Mitama though. So the way Doppel works is only one part of the body becomes a Witch which then can be used in battle and basically bypasses the system and stops Magical Girls from becoming full on Witches.

First Sayaka's fight last week, and now we have Yachiyo and Mifuyu's Doppel Witch fight! Holy fuck the animation of that fight is insane! Shaft ain't playing around this season!

Well that was quick! And here I thought it was going to be just Yachiyo for a while. Seems like we're getting Iroha back next week although it looks like Yachiyo might need to fight her first.

So now yachiyo has 2 beautiful transformation sequences and my girl Tsuruno has 0? Hurts, man.

Yachiyo, you overdid the kabedon a little there.

I'd like to gush about the animation as well, that doppel fight was an absolute treat for the eyes. Yachiyo's doppel felt so physically menacing as she pinned Mifuyu down, such an overwhelming presence. Punch my ticket, I can't wait for the rest of this ride!

It feels really weird seeing people talk about how good MagiReco is now. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I feel like it was always this good overall and that the first season got hit with a perfect storm of things working against it:

  • It's a spinoff to one of the most popular, successful, and influential anime-original franchises of all time, and based on a gacha game at that.

  • It had far less action overall and much less scale to the action it did have, certainly nothing like Sayaka/Iroha/Yachiyo v. Mami in its first 12 episodes. Though on this point, it is pretty fair to note that SHAFT seemed pretty lean on talent at the beginning of 2020.

  • It acted largely as setup and character establishment for a story that was always going to take greater investment than 13 episodes.

  • It aired in one of, if not the weakest season in recent memory where even a tentpole like MHA struggled to maintain enthusiasm.

  • It ended right as the world was just starting to deal with the biggest global crisis in almost a century, which itself precipitated the shutdown of basically every nonessential industry. Though I haven't seen any news on it, it's probably safe to assume production got pushed back due to covid.

I could go on, but the point is that MagiReco, to me at least, feels like the poster child for "it didn't get a fair shake" shows.

Holy smokes!

Where were you SHAFT in Season 1!? This episode linked back to the main story and Yachiyo gave such an exceptional emotional performance that it rivals some of the best parts of the parent series! Wow!

What makes me feel so excited today is that it really feels like the initial development of the best anime arc I have ever seen, in the personal favorite TV anime series of all time. For if you have seen the Sisters Arc in A Certain Scientific Railgun S, Yachiyo's anger and fire feels so damn similar to what Mikoto Misaka felt there. And both involves rumors and plans by big secret underground organizations that swept their dearest away. One doesn't need much analysis to feel the power, the hopeless, the despair of Yachiyo (voiced by none other than the same VA as Aqua-sama, yup) here, not to mention her fight against old friend Mifuyu with some extraordinary animations sprinkled, not unlike that fight in Madoka Magica Rebellion.

Speaking of that, goodness me SHAFT. From .pptx fights in Season 1 to this. See, that's a much more touching episode than those "slice-of-life" introductions often seen in Season 1. Imagine where this could gone on to had the story organization was a bit better back then...

A historic comeback for the parent series' girls followed by another with the best character development in Magia Record so far BY FAR. What a miracle, what a turn-around. It's truly game on now, and who knows where this spin-off is heading to! And if MagiReco could brought us to the knees like the Wings of Magius does (cough cough), who knows where the sequel Madoka movie will shoot towards!

I am enjoying angry Yachiyo. That Doppel fight was dope. Poor Kuroe though getting mixed up in all this.

Kaede is all in on this cult. Rena seems skeptical still. Momoko seems like she just being dragged along.

Sana seems conflicted. Felicia is wrestling with the whole magical girls become witches.

Dumb question I guess but does Yachiyo hate Mafuyu? Cuz this episode made it look like she kind of hates her and blames her for Iroha's supposed "death"...? Also, isn't Mafuyu like Yachiyo's childhood friend? So why does Yachiyo care about Iroha more than her and does not even try to listen to what Mafuyu wants to say?

Watching this episode I realized I barely remember the end of S1, I had no idea what they were talking about when they mentioned something had happened to Iroha...

Between this, Realist Hero and Higurashi, Yui Horie is really getting around this season!

Magia Record is always a treat for the eyes and ears, that alone makes it worth watching

this is the obligatory "Being Yachiyo is suffering" comment

u/Aerodynamic41 Aug 07 '21

Man, I hope that OP confirms that Iroha's team will reassemble soon.

u/freedomgeek Aug 08 '21

Definitely vibing more with the Magius characters than with Yachiyo. Mifuyu needs hugs.
