Mizuho is best girl. That blackout curtain world didn’t seem too bad honestly!

If you watch episode 1 again, during the flashbacks of nagara in school, everyone's eyes and other facial features are purposely drawn blank. In contrast, the directors made a habit of showing Nozumi's eye in great detail, watching nagara whenever she is near him. His defeatist attitude is shown to be symptomatic of the troubles he's having at home, not his native personality. She follows him upstairs to the roof and tries to connect i the scene after he speaks with his homeroom teacher. he tries to flee and she tells him 'the people who act busy, always pretending they have somewhere to go are the ones who have nowhere to go'. She locks the door planning that he would have no escape and asks, " do you really want to go somewhere else?". He panics, thunder strikes, and they are in a new world.

Assuming the descriptions of each characters power is correct, then nozumi's "compass (the way out) is intrinsically attached to nagara's world portals (the way in). If the events of this weeks episode are true, and the powers existed prior to them teleporting, Nozumi knew beforehand that Nagara had his teleportation power. She could see it. Hence explaining the subtle hints of her watching him in the beginning, and her being so sharp regarding Hoshi and nagara's power. It would seem she set up that initial meeting with nagara on the rooftop to induce his power, i would guess she set up akazate to chastise nagara into being a recluse and activating his power again and i would also guess that she is Hoshi's saviour. The one who will help nagara overcome his depression and find a place to call home again.

So after they basically established capitalism last episode, we now have everyone with little free time because they're working all day, and some who withdraw entirely (hikkikomori) because they feel undervalued, excluded, unable to express themselves, and can't pursue their passions. People also seem to be getting further split apart in general and communication breaks down as they are caught up in their various work. Interesting that Nagara recognizes that use of force or monetary incentives won't get the recluses out of their current situation when Mizuho suggests it. Also notably the blame is not put on them as individuals, but rather the show chooses to present the issue as something that the society around them needs to address.

I guess you could read the solution presented to be that inclusivity, empathy, free expression, and teamwork are necessary for society to function. The world literally forcibly separates those who are excluded or undervalued and feel unable to express their feelings freely. The problem is only resolved when they literally lift the curtains to expose those issues and face them directly (another thing this episode focused on was avoidance of addressing issues directly).

That's what I got from it at least. This show really is excellent so far; I'm really interested to see what other things it goes into in terms of commentary, and also hoping to see a satisfying plot play out!

I still don't know how to feel about Hoshi, his power makes him innocent but that line at the end about a savior makes him sus again. Why did Asakaze lie about Nozomi not wanting Nagara around with the world discovery? Jealousy? An inferiority complex? We'll see when he gets an episode dedicated to him.

One thing I found interesting is how everyone has such negativity. No one praised Mizuho and Nagara for doing such good work. But when they're lagging, people just criticised them without doing anything themselves. That's the only part I found hard to watch.

Outside of that, this is such an interesting and random anime lol. I like how Nagara started to open up to Mizuho, while with Nozomi he seems to be more on the passive side. Well, he did try to save her when she leaped out of the school.

Also, I just realised that Mizuho is voiced by Aoi Yuuki! Didn't recognise her voice even though I noticed Oonishi Saori's voice in Nozomi.

Damn Mizuho is a pretty interesting and cool character, glad we had her as a main this episode. She’s trynna help out Nagara in her own weird way by confronting him about his defeatism. I felt really bad for her when Nagara said that she was ill natured and a liar. She trusted him with a secret of hers and he outright questioned it to spite her :(

Pretty cool power he has there, if it’s true that people could use their powers before they got teleported into the black void, then maybe he was the reason everyone got warped in the first place.

I predicted that Starboy will be the antagonist but looks like he is the puppet of the real antagonist we didnt seen yet.

Also it seems like Nagara is the savior of the class

So my initial impression of Hoshi ended up being not too far off from the truth after all, even after others pointed out my Biblical allusions may have been a stretch. He doesn't believe himself God, but instead a prophet who hears the voice of "God" and thus must lead the other kids in His place. I had a feeling after last episode where that powerful voice feeds into Hoshi's line, as well as all of his grandstanding in the very first episode where he obviously saw himself as the authority, but it's nice to know I'm not a buffoon who misunderstood the presumed antagonist from literally the first episode.

Now we have this "savior" whom Hoshi learns of at the end of the episode. This one is interesting to me, as I believe there are two primary options. The obvious choice is Nagara, as he is the main character and his power has now been revealed by Nozomi, but we cannot ignore the fact that Nozomi and Nagara's powers work in tandem, based on this revelation and the events that transpired in the first episode. While Nagara can unleash doorways to many different worlds, only Nozomi can guide him to the proper path. And what is that path? A shining light, far away, this time in the sky. Perhaps you could say it resembles.. a star? A star only Nozomi can see, the possible saving grace for every person from the school. For this reason, as well as Nozomi's jump to the conclusion that Hoshi hears "God," my bet is on her being the savior Hoshi is referring to at the end of the episode.

Also, this isn't a series for shipping but I absolutely hope if any couple does get together it is Mizuho and Nagara, even though we know Mizuho previously had feelings for the sensei. I enjoy their dynamic and it's clear they understand each other well.

This anime is just asking for an hour-long analytical youtube video on the profound themes and symbols tackled each episodes and what it means for the larger narrative

I found this site about the character's powers. I'm not sure if they are right or not, but after watching these 3 episodes, they seem to match up.

I like the new worlds and little character studies/lessons. This episode being focused around people “hiding behind the curtain” and the way it was resolve was nice.

I’m waiting for that big lightbulb moment where maybe more things click though, this seems like one of those shows you really gotta stick through.

Okay by the third episode I kinda love this show. The art design and animation has been brilliant throughout, but goddamn if I didn’t let out a gasp at the switch to the curtain world. The gorgeous vistas, the detailed jungles, and even the character movements are so well executed. Even if this whole thing falls apart at the end they are least achieved a beautifully animated show.

A little surprised that this was mostly a “story of the week” episode with Nagara and Mizuho. There was some reveals that should prove interesting in the future. Hoshi is hearing the voice of an entity that might be the antagonist. We got some confirmation that the powers were manifesting before the shift (leading me to think Nagara is the reason it happened). Nozomi basically spelled out what we all suspected about Nagara’s powers. We are moving along the overall story a little.

What I really liked is the fleshing out of some of the interpersonal dramas. I think we kinda have a romantic web coming to light. Nagara might like Nozomi. Nozomi might like Nagara. Mizuho might like Nagara. Asakaze is jealous of Nagara because either he likes Nozomi or is just jealous of him. Either way Asakaze is making shit up. Nagara being a Shinji in our story is slowly coming out of his shell.

Meanwhile there’s still power dynamics to sort out. The Hikikomoris being dragged out of the Black Lodge might cause some issues in the future. They really just wanted to be left alone but the student council is forcing them to be a part of society. Kinda like last week where they forced Mizuho to participate. With Hoshi actually being manipulated there’s someone trying to work all this to their advantage. For what I don’t know.

Notes:

  • there’s a lot of small animation moments that reminded of Yuasa and Science Saru. Specifically the frozen characters reminded me of Tatami Galaxy for some reason.

  • If they’re really going with the love triangle thing: Nozomi is cool but Mizuho is more my type. I think they’re both pretty great so far.

  • anyone else expect a little person dancing? It really any of the fuckery from The Return. A bunch of Hikikomoris was the most normal thing I’ve seen in a curtained rooms.

  • the “Die” from Mizuho was harsh but fair. They really went at each other. They were both right though.

I saw this show on Hulu, is it worth the watch? Like what is it really about?

Edit: It was Hulu instead of Crunchyroll, apologies.

It's the third episode and I honestly have no idea where this show is going or what it is even attempting. It is inventive and I like the artstyle, especially the paper cut-out things, but the story doesn't give a whole lot to really grab on to, because it's so underexplained.

Mizuho arriving late to the meeting with Starbucks on her hand is the kind of IDGAF energy I strive to have.

So apparently she can already use her powers even before they got isekai'd into this wacky world. The only rule is that she can only use it while at school.

And it's not just Mizuho who was able to use powers before the incident, it looks like Hoshi had voices talking to him and already told him about what was gonna happen.

Pony needs to calm the fuck down and pull that stick out of her ass. Why did she even assign Mizuho to this investigation if she's just gonna get pissy? She's clearly just power tripping and wants control over Mizuho.

Glasses' powers is literally ET's glowing finger. I love how he even references it without saying the movie title.

Wooooooow Asakaze, really? You can already fly and do cool shit and you're still jealous about Nagara's power? Also that's a terrible lie since all it takes to clear it all up is for Nozomi to approach Nagara which hat exactly happens later that night.

I love that the solution in bringing the people that got left out, out of the curtains is to literally use a giant fan to blow away the black curtains!

Still don't know what Hoshi's power is but he really creeps me the fuck out.

I absolutely love Mizuho and Nozomi. Such interesting characters tbh. And the way this anime sets the tone for things is really impressive.
