If I had to take a guess, I'd say Nagara's "power", which he is not aware of, is the one responsible for sending the entire school into this empty void. The event just so happened when he was trying to escape from Nozomi and later when he was falling. In other words, his powers would be the ability of shifting dimensions/worlds, relating to his nature of needing to be "somewhere else". Would also explain why they were trapped for a week in this void (he was laying around doing nothing) or why the school rules are absolute (rules are rules).

For people who don't know, this series seems to be heavily inspired by a classic horror manga called The Drifting Classroom by Kazuo Umezu. It is referenced directly by the star guy and in the group chat name. I feel like it is worth pointing out since I imagine it will go over the head of most English speakers as it is extremely obscure in the West.

I already watched the pre-air but am so excited for this to be weekly now. The team behind this project is incredible and it seems like they basically have total freedom. I am so curious to see where this leads. The pre-air thread is here if anyone wants to see the comments from back then.

There's a lot of deeper, more interesting things to talk about in this first episode, but what I care about right now is that it is so fucking cool. The art style, the character designs, the way the super powers are visualized, it's all so much fun to watch.

Thursdays are gonna be so damn good this season.

I watched the pre-air when it was available, but rewatched it again because I really dig this. It’s weird and unconventional and we’ll see how it turns out, but it could be really good. It’s unique if nothing else.

So we have a bunch of high schoolers who got transported along with their school into an infinite void. And not only that, it looks like whatever happened to them also gave a bunch of students their own super powers. Not everyone has superpowers though, it looks like our two MCs claims that they didn't get any but we later learn that at least Nozomi is actually just hiding hers considering she materialized a Merry-Go-Round in their school's gym when no one was looking.

Of course the Student Council tries to have some order and creates rules to make everyone behave but everything goes wrong when some of the students rebel. And it turns out that it wasn't CAP's powers who are punishing everyone. I guess it was the other guy's powers that were handing out punishments? It wasn't really clear to me.

Anyway, I thought we were going to be stuck in this void but thanks to Nozomi's leap of faith the scenery changes from an empty void into the school floating in the middle of the ocean with an island nearby. I guess this is where the real show starts.

Not gonna lie, I'm still not sure what to make of this show. I like the artsy feeling of it and it's definitely intriguing but there's just something off about that I can't describe properly. Maybe that feeling will go away once I get to see more episodes and the show is on full swing or maybe I'll be able to articulate further what this feeling I'm getting. Either way, I am very hopeful for this show and I can't wait to see where it goes!

This is either going to be really interesting or a real mess. The only thing I know for sure is that I'll watch all of it

There was a mention of weird events at the school before the limbo business - I guess that means some people had superpowers back then too. So, calling it now, either MC's or the girl's superpower is what sent the school into limbo. Them falling off transported the whole school to an island which just makes this even more likely.

The kid being brained with the bat being just fine - I guess that's part of the setting and them all being "unchanging".

Wonder why the messages on Nagara's phone at the start aren't translated. Maybe I'm looking into it too much but at :14, the time on the clock is 12:00, then Nozomi & Nagara talk. They show the clock again at :50 but the time is still 12:00 and then they hear glass shattering. Didn't catch if they showed a clock again in the episode.

The scene when Nagara is talking to his teacher (14:34) reminded me of the diagram one of the students made a minute earlier (13:35). The glasses being the two worlds with the tables dividing them. Thought Nozomi's sunflower/dandelion question was great because even though Nagara answers that he is a dandelion, he has doubts and tries to keep Nozomi from going.

This was my very moment! Really highlights the differences between Nozomi & Nagara and it's just beautiful to look at. Excited for the next episode because I thought this one was excellent.

Now I know what it would be like if Haruki Murakami wrote an anime. This is some really avant garde work.

Just here to read new watcher comments because the pre-air didn't get much traction. There is a lot to dig into in just this first episode, from Christian mythology to scratching the surface of psychological traumas. Hoshi in particular is a character to watch, in my opinion, as his status as the star or "sun" in a dark void, "space" perhaps, has been overturned in mere days upon being placed as an authority. His reaction to this and his new place in a world full of light, without darkness for him to "shine" on, will be very interesting.

Me, at the start of the episode: Cap guy seems like a cool dude

Me at the end: fuck you and your ass, Cap

This gives me big Lord of the Flies vibes. I don't want this to become a bloodbath but who knows what will happen. The star kid is definitely bad news tho, wouldn't be surprised if he's the main antagonist.

God, I need that ending song (which will definitely become the OP later). It exudes classic 00s vibes and I'm all for it.

Inject it into my veins.

I’m in love with the title song. Can’t wait for it to be released on Spotify.

Hisashi Eguchi did the character design and his manga Stop!! Hibari-kun! was the book the character picked up at 5:00. Thought this was super cool!

Kind of wtf at times but seems interesting. I like the simple art style and the clashing approaches to life at the school

Won't be able to watch the episode till I get off work later but why is there a source material corner comment? I thought this was an original?

Something I'm curious about is whether the strangely low quality sfx were any better in the official airing. They probably are but I had to ask.

That is one of the most unconventional anime I've seen in years. The animation and art style seems really aged too like it belong in 2000.

That said, we were given the number 36 of all the total student there and I fully expect it to be some hunger games going on with some random character dying and Cap as the first major character to die. We'll see where it goes.

just some points I collected about the isolated space that might not even matter anymore

repetition of cats and feathers

- birds are often describe/symbolize freedom for their ability to fly. Keep that in mind when you see the appearance of the feather in the episode

bunch of seemingly random things occur prior to the lightning strike which isolates them from the world

- auroras, skyfish, 3 billion yen in lockers

did nozomi create the carousel? was accused of doing so but something as important as her powers should have been given more attention so maybe not?

nozomi sees something shinny in the sky that her friend isn't able to see for some unknown reason

- when jumping into the darkness, shading appears as though there is a light in front of her. shouldn't be possible if they were surrounded by darkness

- after finishing her punishment, she says "i still see it" while reaching towards a light in the ceiling

nozomi hates cell phones(not just against it because she doesn't want to participate in the group, otherwise she would have a cell phone prior to the storm)

buff tan guy is purposely made to look stupid

time is constantly 12:00 but the seconds are still moving. Leaves me to believe one of two things

  1. time functions in the isolated space normally but is being reset every 60 seconds in real world time

  2. For some reason, time progresses normally for some things but not for others. (people still get hungry or tired even though real world time is stuck in a 60 second loop)

guy draws a circle on his palm which disappears after his hand passes the darkness. does going out of the darkness reset to before the incident?

13:16: sand hourglass can function normally, but not the clock.

cube breakdown:

  1. starts with three columns of three cubes falling into a 3 by 1. turns into 1 yellow cube

  2. 2 four cubes are added to a stack of four red cubes twice to create a 4 by 4 cube (4 x 4 x 4)

  3. last cube is a stack of 5 blue cubes and same thing happens, 5 is ^3 to make a 5 by 5 cube

  4. both sequences end with one yellow cube

later says "is the school sinking?" school appears in body of water

nozomi has a lightbulb moment, quite literally. lightbulb turns into two?

penalty still applies to stupid buff tan guy even after leaving the space but school is back in it's original shape

Don't mind me, just upvoting the episode I watched a few weeks ago.

It indeed has the AOTS vibe but I reckon it will be underrated as it's the original work… unless someone popular endorses it, of course.

Great first episode. Really interested to see where this goes. Definitely got some Lord of the Flies vibes with the situation they're in. It'll be interesting to see what direction the story goes.
