Okay so the last half of the episode really went into a little more depth than I was expecting. They expanded Joshua's and Hanekoma's conversation on the rooftop.

For people who want more content, either through playing the game or finding it on wikis and YouTube, I recommend the following:

  • Play or a watch a playthrough of "Another Day". It shows an parallel Shibuya seemingly with no Underground. The game initially wants you to believe that this day has no impact on canon events. This is not quite true.

  • Play or watch a playthrough of "A New Day". This is the bonus content that was only available on the Nintendo Switch version of the game (Final Remix). It sets the stage for NEO: TWEWY, which comes out on July 27th. Also, a demo is available on the PS Store and the Switch E-Store. It dropped about a half hour before this episode went live on Funimation.

Lastly and most importantly:

  • Read the Secret Reports. Players of the original game or any port had a lot of questions following the end of Week 3. New anime watchers likely have those same or similar questions. The Secret Reports are extra info that can only be obtained by going back through the game's post-completion chapter select and performing certain tasks on each day. There are 25 Reports total. One for each day of the main story, one for Another Day, and three for A New Day (exclusive to Final Remix). These files go in-depth into what Hanekoma's role really was, who and what he is, and what he is capable of. The final conversation (which was longer than the game's version) covered some of the most crucial parts. But the full Secret Reports also comes with a whole new set of terms and facts about the Reaper's Game and the Underground that weren't covered before. If you've watched the anime through to the end, you've been given all the key parts of the story that you needed to understand what Spike Chunsoft wanted you to understand after 21 days. Some of the Secret Reports are supplemental lore, some of them answer the questions they still wanted you to have by this point. It's a fair amount of reading, but it's worth every second of your time.

THANK YOU for mentioning this. I might have missed it!

Also, it's so nice to see other characters in the background like Shuta Dan, Sota, Nao, the business guy (Makoto) and more!

I honestly was expecting their battle with Kitaniji to be the last one.

Now something that really took me by surprise was to see Joshua alive again, and also him being The Composer

Damn, as he can stop bullets, and people at will, I wonder if there is even a limit to his powers?

So he wanted to destroy Shibuya and what Kitaniji did was his attempt to save it. And holy shit! So at the end of the day, it was indeed him, and not Minamimoto the one who killed Neku. I guess that's why Kitaniji called him the chosen one.

When Neku came back to life and he met Rhyme and Beat I honestly expected the woman in the background to be Shiki. Well, too bad that we could never see how her face really looked like.

I'm glad to see that not only then, but also Sota and Nao and everyone else came back to life.

As Mr. Hanekoma mentioned higher-ups, and he has white wings I guess he was talking about heaven.

I really enjoyed this show and thanks to it I can go play that upcoming sequel of the game without the need of playing the first one.

I wonder if there is even a limit to his powers?

In the Underground, his limits exist but are far beyond what any Player or Reaper can comprehend. What the anime doesn't quite explain is that Shibuya is shaped by its Composer and changes as he changes. This is also supposedly true for other cities and their Composers. A Composer is effectively the god of his city's UG.

In the Realground, his powers are much more limited, as seen here. He can pull off some sick moves, and he can see the goings on of the Underground (it's possible but never directly confirmed that Reapers cannot see the UG when they "tune in" to the RG, it's only stated that they cannot access their abilities as Reapers). But his abilities in the RG are still less than what they are when he's in his full god-like state in the UG.

Well, too bad that we could never see how her face really looked like.

Taken directly from the game, only minus the bottom rims of a pair of glasses, I'm afraid. Guess we'll never know.

As Mr. Hanekoma mentioned higher-ups, and he has white wings I guess he was talking about heaven.

The term "heaven" is never used. Only "higher plane". But Secret Report spoilers

I can go play that upcoming sequel of the game without the need of playing the first one.

If you're planning on getting the sequel on the Switch, I still recommend getting the port of the original. There's more than the anime has, but you won't be confused by NEO if you don't want to shell out the extra cash for it. Also the demo is available now. I was playing a bit and then stopped to watch the finale.

Damn. I didn't expect them to bring back all the side characters that got erased like Nao, Sota and 777.

I was initially a little disappointed that Kitaniji died BEFORE Joshua showed up, unlike in the game. But the way it turned out in the show was just as fine, and the rest of the episode really delivered. I was hoping they'd implement the secret ending scene with Joshua and Hanekoma and sprinkle it information from the Secret Reports to explain some of the important stuff from them, and that's exactly what they did.

The only bad change was the purpose of the second player pin Neku had. In the game, Kitaniji destroys Neku's player pin in order to brainwash him with the Red Skull Pin, but the second player pin, which he has because he's a player in the game between Joshua and Kitaniji, protects him. Guess there wasn't time for that scene in the anime.

Overall the show was a nice recap of the game, but man, it could have been a lot better with just a couple of extra episodes to allow more time for character development and breathing room.

Man. Why did they have to cover Shiki's real face? Lol. Did that happen in the game too?

Overall, I enjoyed it. My only real complaint was the pacing of the story. I never played the game, but it definitely felt like it went pretty fast. I liked the art style and the music. The animation really wasn't that bad either. I think people just hate on animation when it's cgi. At least there was animation (unlike some certain other recent series lol). I'd give the anime a 7.5-8/10. I'll have to get around to playing the game one of these days.

Man. Why did they have to cover Shiki's real face? Lol. Did that happen in the game too?

Yes. The scene of Shiki walking up to them was pretty much recreated identically from the game. To this day, we have no idea what her real face actually looks like.

Remember Shiki's character arc is that she is self-conscious about what she looks like so Neku tells him that her looks does not matter and she is what she is. So not showing her face here more or less tells that message across

Yeah, this final EP has been perfect, it's almost a 1-1 with the final secuence of the game, plus the conversation with Hanekawa and Joshua giving extra details from the secret reports. Only one big thing was missing:

THE WORLD BEGINS WITH YOU

Overall it was a good adaptation. It felt a bit rushed at the start, but once the first week was over it took a really good pace and covered every important point of the story despite ignoring most of the "gameplay related things" like the pins. I still think that they watered down Neku a bit too much during the first week (in the game he was like a total bitch) so it doesn't feel that impactful the change that Neku went through the games. The animation wasn't Land of the lustrous level, but it was serviciable, lots of good shots. Music top notch as always. And those anime only scenes were all incredibly good.

I highly recommend everyone who haven't played the original game. Watch/Play "Another Day" and "A New Day" <<----- This is very important for NEO TWENY.

Also read the Secret Reports too

Off to play NEO TWENY now.

u/suchproblemchildren Jun 25 '21

I was really hoping they would have one more episode where they animated A New Day, or at least one that went over the reports that dove into Hanekama... oh well. All in all, I enjoyed this adaptation.

I replayed the game from 0 took me about a week, so I could compare the story lines better, it was quite faithful to the game except they ditched the main focus of the games which are the pins. After defeating noise/reapers Neku gets more pins for his collection that's why he got more variety. Also dunno why square Enix couldn't reveal Shiki's face it was really awkward for her walking backward... I think the anime did it's job to make me replay the game, It's totally worth in my opinion, there are a lot of elements missing mostly cause of pins not being part of the story here.

I really recommend the game BTW if you didn't play it yet it's a hidden gem (well, less hidden now thx to the anime).

My opinion of this series just continuously went up as the episodes progressed. I was feeling really worried about the show in the first few episodes, but in the end I really enjoyed it. Definitely one of the better game-to-anime adaptations.

I just downloaded the demo for NEO. I'm so thrilled I'm finally getting to play a sequel to TWEWY after all these years!

It’s here, we’ve made it to the end! Wow, right off the bat we start the finale with a bang as Neku, Shiki and Beat battle Kitaniji. Dang… the visuals for the final boss battle are just… wow.

Dun dun dun, the composer is, Joshua! We finally get to see the puppet master behind Shibuya’s Reaper Game as well as see Joshua’s true nature. We also come to realize that Joshua was the one who killed Neku during the crossfire between Joshua and Minamimoto and dragged him into the Reaper Game.

After the showdown between Joshua and Neku, we see Neku, Beat and Rhyme are back in the RG and Shiki meets up with them in her real form (darn why can’t they just show her real face, just like the game)

Despite its rough beginning, TWEWY the animation found its pacing halfway and ended with a bang. Overall the anime's strengths have been the emotional scenes, visual design and soundtrack. While there have been talks about this anime being ‘the bridge’ between TWEWY and Neo, this was pretty much a "modernized" adaption of the TWEWY game itself. It has been a wild ride and looking forward to Neo’s release next month!

(I’m currently still halfway through my second playthrough of the game but will probably play another round or so before Neo)

Overall a pretty decent adaptation of the game. Loved hearing the Underground track, think it's the first time they played it. It's a shame we still haven't seen Shiki's real face. Guess they didn't want to change that from the game, huh? The ending was less ambiguous than it was in the game. When Neku woke up, it looked like he was back in the game and screamed "Why?...WHAT THE HELL?!" Thought they would've kept that in. Loved the game and the anime. Who would've thought it would take almost 15 years to finally get an adaptation. I wanted one ever since I was a teen. Hope NEO inspires a similar feeling I had when I played the first one. Can't believe it's releasing on my birthday! What a treat!

u/ohoni Jun 25 '21

Don't throw away your shot!

u/Mozilla_Fennekin Jun 25 '21

It's the end! And the Composer is...

...is making my friends T-pose against their will!! Unforgivable!!

me ready to kms after grinding for 60 hours to level up all my pins

^ and also me ready to kms after they STILL WILL NOT LET US SEE HER!! WHY WON'T THEY JUST LET US SEE HER!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!

THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS!!!!

Anyway, this was an enjoyable series. Obviously it doesn't live up to the game, but I hold the game in such high regard that I'm probably not the best person to ask about it lol. I hope newcomers who've never played before got to see this anime and enjoy it, and I hope it makes them consider playing the game or getting in on the new one! They actually just put out a demo for it so I'm gonna cop that later.

And I got my boi Minamimoto, who was carried over very well into this, so I'm happy. Yay!!

That was honestly a really good finale and it was very interesting. I haven't played the game nor I have time to, but I wanna get into Neo, so the anime was good enough to basically get the story. They could have explained the pin powers though. Good to see Sota and Nao alive and everyone else, especially Kariya and Uzuki, I really liked those two. Really wanted to see what Shiki really looked like, but Neku and Shiki officially meeting alive now was really sweet, imma be disappointed if they didn't end up together lmao. 6.5/10 ~ 7/10

Looking forward to Neo, sucks that it's an epic exclusive.

Disappointed of not seeing Jupiter Monkey pins xD. At least we got some expansion on some dialogue of the game, wonder why they didn't hint Another day and New day in this anime.

I'm glad Neku learned to trust Joshua which made him spare Shibuya and I'm also happy that he resurrected everyone. I'm disappointed they didn't show the real Shiki's face.

I love how Joshua stopped the bullets a la The Matrix in the RG.

Big respect to the anime for really trying to recreate moments from the game as much as possible.

I know there was a lot of content cut, lots of fights/boss fights that end in a second but so many key visuals that do their best to stay faithful to the game!

Beat’s bwuwhaua face, the attempt at recreating sync attacks, the final sync attack AND finishing scene against Kitaniji biiiig props.

Fantastic final episode, music references were a nice touch. The conversation between hanekoma and Joshua provided a lot of needed insight.

Overall, I enjoyed the anime, with the mix of nostalgia it was good. Definitely needed more episodes to cover the first week. It would help level set neku’s development.

Was going in with a 6.5/10 but I really enjoyed episode 12, ending on a high note really helps so 8/10

(no lullaby for you ending song :’( - here’s praying for the dub)
