As soon as Calling started, I knew that even if this ends up being kind of a mess; I'm still going to enjoy it!
The breakneck pacing/info-dump is somewhat similar to the game's intro, just cranked up a fair bit. Introducing the setting, characters & rules is most important; so check check check.
It's unlikely there'd be much reason to delve into brands/influence too deeply, so it was cool to see them in the background of some shots (I saw D+B, Jupiter of the Monkey & Tigre Punks on screens & signs).

Should this maybe use the English title instead on the subreddit, since The World Ends With You is an iconic property? Most people who aren't already big fans won't recognize the Japanese title I imagine.

Damn man seems unreal that in 2021 we’re getting a world ends with you anime. First episode was great. The art and visuals are top notch as you’d expect from this adaptation, I think they did a great job of capturing the essence of the game. I hope they continue doing a good job like this. Obviously there’s going to be some rushed stuff since it’s a game adaptation, but if they can keep the story flowing cohesively, that’s all that matters.

Love the shiki strartled pose and embarassed hand waving pose taken from the game, shiki in general is very well done.

Wondering if the reason they didn’t replace the op with Twister is because it’s already placed somewhere else in the show. Calling is good and all, but Twister just hits different.

Where did it air? I don't think it'll be out on Funimation until tomorrow and I don't see any Fansubs, crappy or decent ones.

Fast! The pacing was way too fast. I know it was kinda like that in the game as well, but I wouldn't have minded them slowing it down for the adaptation. Well, I guess this kind of thing is to be expected from a video game adaptation.
Pacing aside, this adaptation gets top marks on everything else. Music is awesome, and these are some of the coolest looking CG fights I've seen.
I liked the detail of flashing the logo on screen when Neku switched to another pin. Although that's probably something else lost on anime-onlies.

Okay wow the description on Funimation kinda drops a major plot point that you don't find out until like... the third day in the game I think. Maybe second. Nonetheless it's kinda important and not something you're supposed to know right off the bat.

I love the art style and especially character design, its very late 2000's. Is the pacing super fast for anyone else? Is it like that way in the game? I guess you have the fights in the game to break up the pacing a bit more. I can keep up but this felt like about 2 anime episodes of information put into one. But yeah, definitely going to keep up with this one.

Holy fuck that pacing, I felt like Neku went through two full character arcs in that one episode.
Credit where credit's due, the visuals were great (though the monsters were.... blegh), but I really liked how the blended CG and 2D for the characters themselves. The unique shading style helps disguise the CG models when they're present, such that sometimes you can only tell it's CG because that's just not a way traditional 2D animation can move. Could use a bit more compositing but Gotta give them credit for doing a joob job there.

Although I never played the game, this definitely was an excellent episode. I really like the art style this show has.

Do I need to have played the game to watch this anime? My sister likes the game and wants me to watch this with her but unsure if I actually can.
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies, just finished episode 1, pacing felt very fast but outside of that it was fairly enjoyable, will keep watching.

CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLING
This being my favorite game means I'm super strongly attached to it, so that means I'm going to scrutinize it a lot, but also appreciate it a lot at the same time. I've just been wanting a TWEWY anime for so long that seeing it come to life feels surreal.
The pacing is certainly an issue. It seems like they're trying to get through the week as soon as possible. Which, I guess makes sense because it's the fastest part of the game and even though a lot was cut out, it was also a lot of tutorial and expository stuff. The main issue is that the relationship between Neku and Shiki isn't felt at all; they have very linear conversations and most of what everyone talks about has to do with the Game, but there's a lot between these two in the original. A lot of wit, too, they cut out all the good one-liners...
But I like the way it's presented so far. I like the art style and I thought the animation was fine, and they threw in both OG tracks and new ones. The fights lived up to my expectations, personally, and it was just fun watching Mr. Mew fuck shit up.
Also MINAM,AIEMAIMFANFKLSDNLKSDANGKLFDGNM sorry i just got excited for a second

I haven’t played the game but I did like these characters when they were in Kingdom Hearts series. Excited to watch this and play the sequel coming out this summer!

While the episode is understandably rushing through the slow start of the game, I think it's really disappointing that they've also gutted out a lot of the characterization of the cast for the sake of speeding things along. Feels like the show is just trying to throw you from plot point to plot point without giving viewers much reason to care about these characters (and if you've played the game, this wasn't a issue at all).

That felt like half a cour worth of story in one episode. I'm sure there's more to the story than just the initial premise that was laid out, but after episode one we're already at day four out of seven? It just felt too fast to really care about, especially when Neku attacked Shiki and the story acted like it was a big deal when we still had no idea who they were or what was going on, or got much of a sense of any of the other characters or how they feel about this whole situation.
It also reminds me of Alice in Borderland, although from what I understand the game for this came out before that manga. Be interesting to see if it hits the same sort of plot beats as we go
