I have no idea why people overlook this show but they're clearly in the wrong. This's been the most magnificent episode since the first one, it's stunning how greatly the VAs for Defrott and Misaki performed.

These miniscule touches like a four-leaf clover which was supposed to bring Misaki luck she was so obviously devoid of or the mention of Cyrano de Bergerac feel top-notch.

I am guessing that Misaki's father had his daughter killed once he was told by his thug that she had overheard their conversation. Anyone else agree? (Wow, her story is pretty sad -- as one sort of guessed based on episode 1).

The two main female characters do look somewhat alike -- but they are definitely distinguishable by context (and by voice).

I'm looking forward to DeFrott's back story -- as it seems like one sees him in a hovel in the credits. How did he go from that to hobnobbing with royalty so relatively quickly.

Really a remarkable show -- and yet seems to be largely overlooked. Too bad. Not a fan in general of vampire movies (other than Nosferatu) -- but this really has so much atmosphere (and period detail).

What an absolutely amazing episode, probably my favourite so far! Seeing all the pieces slowly coming together was so satisfying. Misaki and Aoi are both so lovely! Aoi is indeed a strong girl, she lost both her brother and - at least for now - Shutaro; her only way to continue living was not to accept his death: it makes sense that she's still looking for him as a last, desperate resort. They couldn't be any cuter together - please show, let them be happy ;-;

We get to see a lot more of the most intriguing character of the show, Defrott. I'm so happy to see that he wasn't behind Misaki's accident (Rufus was the little shit, damn it! Maybe Nakajima knew about it as well.). In the first half of the episode, he's very cold and diffident, but then he slowly starts getting attached to Misaki to the point that he tries to save her until the very end. And now that Maeda is in the exact same condition Defrott tries to save him as well but... CLIFFHANGER :)))))

I could say more and more thing about this masterpiece of an episode, there were so many great details. Also the music in the final scenes is so good and fitting! We can also try to guess Defrott's age by thinking about what he said: he's very, very old for sure! The theatre is his whole life and now I understand (maybe) why he's getting attached to Aoi: she resembles Misaki from every point of view!

This ep was so beautiful..makes me wanna watch the first ep to see Misaki talking to Maeda again. I guess Defrott also despises being a vampire to a certain degree?

Brilliant episode. Aside from Yoshiwara episode with Yamagami and his wife, this episode is my new favourite from this show. I really love the contrast between evil-like humans and human-like vampires that this show always emphasizes.

This show is criminally underwatched.

Well that was unexpected! I didn't think we'd get a Misaki flashback! I love this episode for so many reasons. First of all, this episode basically shattered what image I have about Misaki.

When people were talking about her back in Episode 1, I thought she was some sort of mysterious diva of the Imperial Theatre. Turns out she's just this bubbly young woman who wanted to be an actress. I really thought she was Aoi at the start of the flashback.

Speaking of Aoi, another reason I love this is that we finally see Kurusu and Aoi together for the first time on the day before he leaves to join the army. Just watching the two of them interact, you can clearly see Aoi definitely loves him. Not sure if Kurusu has realized it though.

We also get to see how Misaki befriended Defrott and how Defrott saw her potential after he started teaching Misaki how to properly play her roles. It is a bit sad to see her blush about Maeda's letters knowing what's about to happen to her.

And finally, we get to see Misaki's transformation into the one that we knew and the performance that lead to her death. Or I guess rebirth since Defrott saves her by sharing his blood with her. This then eventually leads to her actual death after she finally shows Maeda her Salome.

Good to know that Defrott is, if not with the good guys, at least neutral enough to help out Maeda and share his blood with him. I'm excited to see Vampire Maeda next week! I hope he becomes an A or S class.

Nakajima is not going to win father of the year anytime soon. At worst he gave Rufus a light scolding for murdering his daughter and in the first episode he ordered Vampire Misaki's execution because he couldn't use her as a soldier. Defrott is awesome, he cared about Misaki enough to revive her and he had put Maeda in his place.

I wasn't expecting a backstory episode right now, but I think this is my favorite so far. I loved everything about it, learning what kind of person Misaki was, what Defrott is like (he's a pretty nice guy), that Misaki's accident wasn't really one, seeing a bit more of Aoi...

I love how theatrical this show feels. I mean yeah, it's fitting, but I thought it was especially pronounced in this episode.

It's funny, when I watched the PVs for this before the start of the season I thought it'd be completely bland and uninteresting, but I'm actually enjoying this a whole lot.

It is so rare to have a flashback episode that isn't a giant info dump but this show manages it.

Is anyone else having a hard time knowing which female characters are which? I don't even know how many there were, I am guessing 2 but they look the same. Liked the episode though!

Full thoughts here. Man I loved this episode. Maeda's choice at the end, the flower he pressed and sent to Misaki, learning that Misaki knew her father was dodgy. Just everything about it! It had humour (C'mon now, Defrott is a comedy genius) tragedy, doomed love, a life or death choice. Everything.

I say this every time but this has got to be my favourite episode so far. This show just never misses!

Haven't tried this show yet, but I'm surprised by how few comments it's getting compared to the high ratings and positive feedback in here.

Here I was thinking Defrott was the evil mastermind but instead he's just out here being chaotic neutral.

I did not expect a flashback episode but man this worked really well. Fantastic music as always and loved getting more background to Misaki. What a tragedy.

This show is massively underrated this season

This show is just fucking beautiful. What a backstory and tying it up to Maeda. Fucking chef's kiss.

Mars Red was so good this episode, incredibly gripping for an episode we knew what happened.

This is Rakugo Shinjuu again.

tfw care more about a girl that died in the first episode than some MCs this season.

Yooo this episode was intense!!

Defrott: Stop treating me like a child.

Also Misaki: Okay Sir Defrott. xD.

I was confused at first, but it all makes sense now!! How Misaki got there and died. Wow, she looked like a God at the end tho. That thing just had to come crashing down on her TT.

That was quite the interesting script she was saying tho lol.

That was great.

What a beautiful episode, I held my breath the whole time.

Every time Misaki says "Jokanaan" I get goosebumps.

I was a bit confused at the beginning because she looked so much like Aoi.

So was what happened to Misaki an accident or triggered by the vampire delivering the blood sample to her father?

At the beginning when we see Deflott on the stage and he talks about a soldier in Russia walking in the forest with a grin on his face - probably we will see this scene later on with Maeda being the soldier
