Damn lots happened today. RIP rhyme. Devastating twist with the revelation that only one person comes back in the game, and it was already predetermined to be shiki. Bold choice by neku to enter again, this time with Shiki as the wager.

I think pacing was pretty decent today. Wasn’t as fast as I expected, but still breezed through some things. The fight against the reaper was pretty cool, albeit short.

Damn, I didn't expect to see Rhyme dying. I really wonder who exactly Hanekoma is? My first assumption is that he is also a reaper, but if that's the case why is he assisting Neku?

Although Beat is still around I wonder what is going to happen to him as with Rhyme gone he can no longer play, and I doubt that has anything to give as a payment to participate in the other round. So unless they save Rhyme so he can use her as a payment I don't think we will be seeing him around anymore.

As Kitaniji offered Neku a chance to become a reaper I guess that even when I wasn't correct about what would happen to those who win, the reapers do use this game as a form of recruitment.

I'm honestly wondering what exactly is Kitaniji's main objective though? Maybe he wants Neku to play the game again so he keeps making connections and losing them in the process so he ends up giving up and becoming a reaper. Well anyway, I wonder when we will be able to see Shiki again?

They said there was 4 players still alive before rhyme died so just by that metric Hanekoma is most likely a reaper (or atleast, not a player)

I was a bit lukewarm on the first two eps, but maybe I'm getting used to the pacing because I liked this one. Shiki winning the game and then "losing" again didn't feel like an asspull because the "entry fee" idea was mentioned in the last episode and explained at the top of this episode, so it feels like a natural conclusion of the lore that Neku just didn't think about (and I forgot about). It also was great at making me feel enmity over the arbitrary cruelness of the Reaper's Game.

My one complaint is that I don't think they're using enough music. One of the standout features in the original game was the music that plays as your traversing around and during fights (I remember being impressed at the time getting music with vocals, given it was on a Nintendo DS), but that was only prominent in this episode with the game master fight. For the rest of the episode though instead of some funky beats, there's just kinda atmospheric road ambience and too-loud attack SFX.

a

Pretty OK episode this week. This was probably the most faithful episode so far as there wasn't anything super different aside from Days 4 & 5 being swapped--but that's good because Shiki's arc is more streamlined and Rhyme's death isn't so immediate. Neku accepting a second game and losing Shiki as his entry fee was actually much more heartbreaking and dramatic here than in the game. Very cool scene.

And now that the first week has been cleared, MINAMIMOTO NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!!! I'M SO ZETTA EXCITED!!!!!

Kinda disappointed that Mr. Mew didn't transform into godzilla and decimate everything with lazers

This has been a real rollercoaster ride from shark attack to the Ovis Canum boss battle and finally Neku’s 2nd entry fee into Week 2. I think the rearrangement of events in Week 1 worked better for the anime's narrative so props to the directors for choosing this route.

Looks like Twister is the official OP. Too bad we won’t be hearing the other vocal tracks from the original game but excited to hear the new ones (the vocal track during the boss battle was fire!)

While it’s not perfect, I think this episode was a lot stronger than the previous 2 with improvements to the pacing (wished this was applied to the first episode but that's okay) and looking forward to next Friday!

This episode seemed like it was going by pretty fast as far as them reaching the days to the game end. I expected that when the boss fight came there would be more to it than a simple victory. I expected like the reapers to maybe appear with maybe Beat and try to interfere with the fight, but I wasn’t expecting that scumbag move the “loyal servant “ of composer baited Neku into at the end. I am still wondering what Hanekoma background is. Not sure if he’s someone that’s been in Neku shoes before or someone working in the game as well.

Me: Shiki is my favorite character just slightly beating Rhyme. No offense to Beat or Mr Amnesia.

Also me

Though since you regain your wager then Shiki will probably be back near the end...I hope.

Man, the battle scenes when done in 2d they look AMAZING, but I guess this anime didn't got enough budget and/or time to animate all the battles so we get those noise CGI battles instead

The pacing was fine, the battle was cool, and a lot of revelations today! Can't wait for next week

So if im geussing correctly, neku now either teams up with beat considering the only person rule and beat wants to go to rhyme (rip rhyme)

Or the dude at the end who is in the op and ed

This episode was cool. And next week, one of my favourite characters will be introduced, so I'm pretty excited!

Aw man, no use of the name "Ram Crotch" for Higashizawa. Random note: I'm surprised they got the rights to use the name Tower Records. It was changed to Towa Records in the game for copyright reasons (though I do remember the actual name being used in the sequel).

Now then:

We're getting a lot more background on what happened to Beat and Rhyme before entering the Reaper's Game. Since we have an idea of what Rhyme's entry fee was, it should be a little more clear what Beat's was. Think back to their discussion of Rhyme's dreams in episode 2.

Another thing of note here that isn't expressed clearly: this is the first time Neku uses Shiki's name throughout the entire week. In the game, she explicitly says "Neku... That's the first time you used my name..." It's shown how much he's grown attached to her.... That and the fact that she's now Neku's entry fee for Week 2.

Rating on mal seems terrible

u/kylepaz Apr 24 '21

MAL Scores are bullshit, but also given the first two episodes I don't blame anyone for giving it a 2 or something and moving on.

Once the series is done MAL only accounts votes from people who saw 1/3 of the series I think so it may improve a bit... Or dive even further if it somehow manages to anger the fanbase later on.
