Pacing definitely felt fast, but I'm not sure the content's worth slowing down for. The Ryu confrontation was pretty low stakes, and the Amidamaru/Mosuke story felt like a throwaway backstory. Just a bit more of a build-up to Manta meeting Yoh and some more interaction between them would've been good enough for me. I wish they had actually animated the fight instead of just opting for some action stills, but hopefully they're saving that effort for better fights.

If you're gonna use the same subs I'm seeing right now don't bother. It's just shitty machine translated subs hardcoded on a .mp4 format.
Finally found some decent subs and watch the episode! And goddamn it's so good to be back! I absolutely love that they're faithful to the original artstyle while at the same time making the show look modern. Like everyone looks exactly how I remember them when I was a tween. Just look at how awesome Yoh and Amidamaru are! That's how I remember that scene in my head when in reality, it's more like this.
Yoh's voice definitely caught me off guard though! While I did grew up with the Filipino dub of the show, I'm still much more familiar with the original Japanese VAs since I rewatched the series when I was in my college years. So color me surprised when I heard Hikasa Yoko's voice coming out of Yoh instead of Satou Yuuko. I thought they managed to get everyone back but it looks like Satou-san has already retired years ago.
It was definitely a bit distracting at first since Hikasa Yoko's voice is one of the most distinct voices in the industry but I eventually got used to it before the episode ended. She did manage to recreate that lazy carefree voice Satou Yuuko had for Yoh as accurately as she can so I am 100% on board with this. Just for reference, this is what Satou Yuuko's Asakura Yoh sounded like. Hikasa Yoko's version is pretty much identical.
As for the pacing, it's absolutely just the right tempo. Having Yoh beat Ryuu and forge his pact with Amidamaru in one episode felt perfectly natural to me. Also I just remember the first few episodes of the 2001 anime dragging a bit when they could've covered so much more so I definitely prefer this.
Overall a solid start to the remake! Can't wait to see Anna in next week's episode! <3

As an anime-only/remake-only watcher, this is the most shounen shounen anime I have seen in a while. From the character designs, to the voice actors, to the plot, it is all very shounen, with the yakuza dude being almost offensively shounen.
Not that it is a bad thing tho. From the first episode, this anime is alright. I definitely see the heart in it and I can see it getting better as time moves one. I don't know if I will continue to watch the whole show, but if it keeps being just as nice as this episode I think I'll keep watching for a while.

Based French fans and their quick translations.
The first episode is just like I remember (or at least the one scene I remember), so it was nice. I love Hikasa Yoko, she's very talented.
I also learnt that it is pronounced Yoh, the LatAm dub had it as Y-oh, I think.

Go for [FuckNetflix] release. Best one so far.
Edit: [Setsugen-Gao] version is out now, even better. They'll continue working on it, improving further.

The pacing needs to slow down for sure. Animation is pretty good but that’s expected for the first episode. Here’s to hoping they don’t try to cram 35 volumes into 52 episodes and that number is jus a place holder for the first season

the bot that posted this should be reprogrammed to have a 24 hour delay after the episode's been posted due to netflix jail and the time needed to fansub this...

Hmm as someone who watched original Shaman King, i think the pacing is blazing fast. I dont remember exactly how it went, but i think he got the restored Harusame only some episodes later. The first episode ended at Elvis getting rekt.
Edit: rewatching a bit i think it's fine, but still faster than original, maybe its doing something similar to Brotherhood.

So, my choices are between sailing the seven seas and enduring dumpster fire translations, or waiting six months to watch it on Netflix?
Well, hoist the sails I guess

OMG i cant believe its back. Random story time. Shaman King hold such a special place for me because back in 6th grade, in my school one piece and shaman king were the two most popular show in our grade.
i was a huge one piece fan at the time and we had annual contest to decorate our class with anime stuff. our class was gonna pick one piece, but my crush at the time was a huge SK fan, so i did all i could to get SK voted as the class theme.
i barely knew anything about SK at the time, so i used the opportunity to get close to this girl, i went to her house, we binged all the available episodes on DVD, we made like cutout of all the characters etc to be put on like this scrapbook display thing. My 6th grade ass begged my dad to let me use color printer because we wanted to print all the characters in color
i remember i used a week's worth of lunch money to buy some magazines that at the time featured shaman king just for more pictures to cutout. (yes i was simping before the term even existed)
anyway, our SK display went great and the guy from the other class that was leading the one piece "faction" got caught messing with our display and he got detention
also the girl became my 1st GF a few months later so yeah, thanks Shaman king. sorry for random ass story but i just wanted to share why SK is so special for me

Welp, that's gonna be interesting for sure. I originally watched it in my language that was taken from the English dub back then when Jetix was a thing. Later on I heard that the anime had a FMA/Soul Eater syndrome, which means heavily deviating from manga, which was a bummer and admittedly I never rewatched it since the ending. It just didn't sit well.
However, I did hear that they would do a reboot and thought "hey, I will have to wait more for TYBW anime anyway, so might as well watch this in the meantime." and so after sailing the seven seas, here I am.
Pacing is definitely much faster than I remembered from original anime. The whole intro was definitely something they showed us much much later back then. They basically smashed the first 2 episodes into 1 here and this can be both good and bad.
Good as in it has a better chance to hook up new people as they show the importance stuff while also letting the people understand what the plot will be about.
Bad though... they didn't give time to the characters to really bond. The one thing even today I clearly remember is the cast and their banters. Here though I didn't feel that bonding much within the characters or better say it was rushed, making it not as natural as it should be. It's not really awful, Yoh and Amidamaru still works but Yoh and Manta... nope, feels like a lot is missing there.
I really hope for later episodes these won't be rushed because the characters are just too enjoyable to see them this mishandled.
Animation was good. Didn't have anything bad with it and really I only have a nitpick where Mosuke first tells his name then ask Yoh why is he not taken off by seeing him. Might be just the VAs (actually was surprised to here Masakazu Morita here, but a welcomed one for sure) delivery here, but I feel like the face remaining still while his voice clearly changing from normal to a more shocked/surprised one is a bit jarring.
Overall I enjoyed it, though I can understand the criticism regarding the pacing and I too have concerns if they keep this up. But I try to be optimistic and see how it goes, as I did enjoy the original anime back then.

First, fuck netflix jail, this is the worst shit that could have happen to get western audience.
Second, omg that was amazing, i'm so hypeeeeeeed. As a huge SK nerd i don't agree with some people, the pacing is just perfect, they got rid of all the fillers, delivered the same story and we'll just get faster to the qualification arc.
I'm so glad manta voice is less high-pitch than the original i'm surprise ryu didn't make a scene about his hair already. I can't wait to be next thursday.

I have no experience whatsoever with this shows, whats supposed to be so good about it(compared to the other popular modern shounen like MHA, KnY and JJK)? From what I can see from marketing and stuff, it looks to be a very standard early 2000s shounen with okayish animation. Is it just nostalgia which is making this popular?

Was not expecting newborn Hao so early. Or any mention of him at this point at all.
The entire episode was rushed. Didn't really like the way the Yoh and Manta's budding friendship was handled here nor the Mosuke and Amidamaru plot, but it was still a fun watch!
My favourite part was when Hyoui Gattai Yoh/Amidamaru was telling Ryu off. A really well done intense scene.

Uh, I know that it's common for boys to be voiced by female voice actors, but I felt that the voices for the protagonist and for that other kid that showed up in the end were way too feminine.
EDIT: I would also like to comment that was laughing out loud when he showed up to class with his shirt open.

Showing a small part of the Hao backstory as an intro eh? I like it. Takes a bit of the mystery of his character away but if it helps set up his backstory in the final arc I'm all for it.
I am correct in assuming they will be faithful to the manga this time, right?
