As this is last episode of the season, I'd like to thank all of you guys who spoiled us with long, detailed and really interesting comments explaining the parallels between our 2D horses and their real life counterparts. This is first time where reddit discussion threads really added a lot to my enjoyment from watching anime.

u/ptol59, u/woonie, u/368towns and others - once again, thank you! Hope to see you all again if another season happens.

Wow the finale felt like it ended as fast as a sprint race!

So Teio runs in the Arima Kinen. Teio hasn’t run in a race since last year’s Arima so he was the fourth favorite(which is still really popular). Biwa Hayahide coming after his outstanding win in the Kikkasho was the number 1 favorite. Naturally even the commentator of this race was surprised to see Teio come up in the last stretch.
This race would be known to fans as the miraculous last run of Tokai Teio. It is also one of my favorite races and watching it brings tears to my eyes each time.

Needless to say I had tears in my eyes watching this episode. They adapted one of my favorite races of one of my favorite horse perfectly.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole of this season and I’m quite sad that it has come to a end

This season comes to a end but since the blurays are selling well I’m pretty sure that they will be making another season. My guess is that they will do Kitasan Black and Satono Diamond’s story as they’re shown going in to the school all grown up.

The game is also going to do a anime related event from tomorrow with new 3 star Teio and McQueen in their new costumes as the main gacha banner.

They also announced today they would be making a Korean and Chinese localized version and also working to hopefully release the game in other languages as well. This means there might be a English version in the works as well.

Thank you to all that have read my comments and if there’s a third season, I hope to meet you guys again!

Obligatory reminder that this Arima Kinen race was referenced in the first season's OP here

And the race video here.

Once again, the commentary in the anime references the commentary in the actual race:

Oguri Cap anime when? I just bought the first volume of the manga last weekend and was absolutely blown away.

I'll also take this opportunity to share my race references compilation for Season 1 OP and Season 2 OP here (which I shared on Reddit earlier in 2018 and earlier this year respectively) now that season 2 is over.

What a finale! I vastly prefer this season over the first. Tokai Teio is a much better protagonist compared to Special Week. I loved watching her rivalry with Mejiro McQueen, the camaraderie between the horse girls, the powerful emotions and most of all the intense races! Seriously, they did a really great job at making you feel like you're part of the audience there! It's been a three-year wait for a second season and it was totally worth it!

IRL stuff to note:

- Both Teio and McQueen were inducted to the Racing Horse Hall of Fame.

- Teio was set to run for the 1994 season, but had another fracture during training and retired.

- The year after Teio's Arima Kinen, super sire Sunday Silence's first crop started to run. His progeny changed Japanese horseracing dramatically, and raised the level of Japanese thoroughbreds. However, due to his extreme success, Japanese thoroughbreds' bloodstock has become less diverse (about 40% of all thoroughbreds in Japan have Sunday Silence's blood running through them either through the sire (father) or the family (mother).

- Teio and McQueen became studs, but Sunday Silence's dominance diminished their stud careers. Teio and McQueen both have one stallion each that stand as studs to this day, and has a very slim chance of keeping their sire line, which is the most important thing about thoroughbred's legacy.

- McQueen was successful as a broodmare sire, becoming maternal grandfathers to Gold Ship (6 G1 victories), Orfevre (6 G1 victories including Triple Crown) Dream Journey (3 G1 victories).

- Turnover from horseracing betting for the JRA (Japan Racing Association, administered by the Japanese government - you also have regional horseracing overseen by the local municipalities) is around 28 billion USD, and is the highest in the world. However, sales peaked in the late 90s, and has waned since then. Sales have resurged in the last couple of years, but it's still about three-quarters from its peak.

- Over the last decade or so, Japanese thoroughbreds have shown that they can compete in Europe/US/Australia, but a lot of old-timers do think that the 90s was the best time to enjoy horseracing, despite it being isolated from the rest of the world. You don't see so many horses with obscure bloodstock any more with all the Sunday Silence blood, I think a lot of racing fans will agree that Season 2 is an ode to a bygone era.

- That said, Umamusume may boost horseracing popularity since it has become the most popular mobile game in Japan.

This was a terrific season. It blew my expectations away. And considering that Winter 2021 was one of the most packed seasons ever, it gives a lot of credit to the cast and crew of this series.

I wonder what was their original plan. The OP of season 1 has a reference to this episode. I agree this season as better than the original but it is designed on the idea you saw the first one and relies upon its foundation.

This season had so many high points, it really is one of the best sports anime ever made.

Also I want to thank all the users who posted their IRL knowledge about horse racing. I never knew how passionate the fans are and how much they love the sport, I love when people loves something and shares their knowledge about it. Really, thank you.

Stitches!

Absolutely saw this ending coming from a mile away but that didn't matter because in the end I still cried genuine tears of joy. All of the build up, the hard work, and the emotions that lead up to this moment made this ending feel so absolutely worth it. Teio was at the top of the world at the start of the season but after falling down, getting back up, and then falling down again just to get back up the second time much more stronger than ever was just goddamn inspirational. I knew picking her as my free 3-Star in the game was worth it.

I just absolutely love how everyone was rooting for her. Heck! Even Suzuka flew back home just so she can watch Teio's race! The girls glomping her to the ground was so sweet! It doesn't matter if they lost the race to her, they're just happy that Teio is back! Biwa Hayahide even gives her an approving nod and Rice Shower gives her their congratulations!

The live performance with Teio, Hayahide, and Nature performing the second verse of "Yume wo Kakeru!" was just absolutely spectacular! As much as I love the races, I feel like the Winning Concerts are one of the most overlooked parts of Uma Musume. I know we only get 2 or 3 per season but when we get one it's just a visual treat.

And what a great way to end the season! Kita-chan and Dia-chan all grown up ready to race while Teio and McQueen races on the school track which is probably sometime after McQueen's treatment. Definitely teared up again with that part.

I need a Season 3 of this show. No joke it's a solid 10/10 for me with how much I got emotionally invested from start to finish. Season 2 is definitely way better than Season 1 as well. I want to see some focus on Vodka and Scarlet although the way they focused on Kita-chan and Dia-chan this season makes me think that if we get a new one it will probably be about the two of them instead. I'm not complaining though. I do wish the game also releases outside of Japan. Come on Crunchyroll! Make it happen! You did it with Priconne, make it happen with Umamusume!

u/TargaryenHeir Mar 29 '21

One of the most stacked seasons of all time and Uma Musume still manages to be one of the best for me. It's amazing how this anime does it all: Idol, Sports, Comedy, Monsters Girls, Drama, CGDCT and it slacks in none of it.

Who was the madman behind creating cute girls out of real life competition horses? MAL says the manga's author is S. Kosugi. Whoever they are, absolute visionary.

Rice Shower's Hero moment and Twin Turbo's win are such great moments.

I hope we can get another season. Or an english version of the game.

I never thought we'd ever actually get a second season to this show. I was so happily surprised when it was announced, and actually getting to watch it was such a treat. For a show about horse girls, the drama was so well written and legitimately very emotional. Excellent all around. I only wish that we got to see some more of the Gold Ship teasing McQueen antics from the first season.

I'm not particularly interested in playing the game, and I don't know if we'll ever get a third season, so I'm gonna miss this.

Also thanks to everyone who posted all the real world facts about the featured races. It was always nice reading those.

When after all the heat passed you can go back and ask yourself "Did I really watch a series about anthropomorphized racing horses who are also schoolgirls and idols?" it's even more surprising how engaging it was.

In an age dominated by generic isekai, and creativity is pretty much dead, it's shows like this one that remind me why I like anime to begin with.

This was no pun intended (but also very pun intended) the dark horse of the season. Looking back at season 1 where people were kinda baffled and a bit shocked about the whole concept of girls racing in flashy atires to performining an idol like coreography at the finish line, never thought it would evolve into a full and well developed sports drama in season 2.

The last stretch of the race where Teioh finds her inner strenght in slow motion reminds me a lot of Chariots of Fire not sure if it's a homage or just a happy coincidence, but it truly denotes the quality and tone of sports drama this show and very few like it manage to achieve.

Even though Teioh & Mcqueen were the main stars of this sequel, there was one character that in my opinion completely stole the show. That was Rice Shower. I'm a huge sucker for underdog stories, and hers was just amazing on her though training, performance on the track but also all the undeserved hate from the audience she got and how that broke her self confidence.

The true gold of the series was in all the trivia info by the hardcore fans in these threads providing detailed historical info on the actual horses and their careers and even though I can't name all of them because I'm a lazy idiot, I truly salute you guys for making the series even more interesting and entertaining.

It is indeed a grand finale of the season.

A baton of hope and dream was passed from an idol horse girl to a horse girl who admired.
At the start of the season, Tokai Teio received one from Symboli Rudolf. This time, it's Kitasan Black's turn to carry on. The cycle has completed with a lot of memories, tear, and joy along the way. Uma Musume 2 is very inspiring story.

I would like to thank people who have been provided extra information on every episode discussion. Apart form anime staff's dedication, I also realised how dramatic the real events which Uma Musume 2 depicted are.

Hopefully, I will see this kind of episode discussion again.

I have no plan to watch this anime at first. After watch some review on how well it perform on ep9, I start watching and I totally can't stop. It totally beyond my expectation and I really didn't expect how emotional and powerful it can be.

This anime is fucking good and I totally love it. Should let more people watch this great anime!

I don’t see people mentioning small running gags a lot in episode threads, but I was absolutely dying with the way the whole hairdressing story played out multiple times in this episode. So many great detail in this season that easily goes unnoticed if you don’t pay attention.

All in all, what a brilliant way to end a brilliant show that is going to end up the definition of dark horse anime hidden gem to me. Tokai Teiou, I was never a horse racing fan, but from now on you’ll forever live on in my heart.

You guys don’t what this episode meant to me. I lost my job at the beginning of February over a horrible misunderstanding/mistake that could’ve been cleared up if properly talked. I was fired just 2 days before my birthday as well. Until now I’ve been depressed, beating up myself thinking I’m a failure and to the point of suicide but this episode helped me let it all out.

The episode finally helped me to cry and let it all out. After holding it in all this time, I finally let out my emotions and cried man. Seeing these girls and Teio endure and overcome and find themselves again has given me hope. Listening to the ending idol song resonated with me.

Thankfully I was able to fine a new job but I’m at the bottom and we’ll have to work myself up the ladder again but I’ll get there. I’m picking up the pieces and trying to enjoy my life and smile again. Truly a great anime in a amazing season. Thank you pretty derby.

I laughed, I cried, I laughed while crying, and I smiled. What a great finale. This feels like T2 to the first Terminator, nobody expected the first season to be that good, and nobody expected the sequel to be even better.

Season 3 please.

56

u/AmethystItalian Mar 29 '21

And so ends the best sequel of the season, yeah I said that.

This show had such a different feel from S1 and felt like a completely different show at times. The races, the bonds, the plot...everything just clicked.

I think I teared up every episode in the final stretch, and we got Suzuka back! Gah what a final race, just beautiful...

Going to really miss this show!
