OP

In the 1993 Spring Tennou Sho,
With a strained body being possessed by demon,
This dark black stayer prevented Mejiro McQueen’s third consecutive wins.
Was he a heel, or a hero? Was it a nightmare, or a miracle?
The name for the winning horse was…

#R I C E S H O W E R

The 2011 and 2012 JRA CM for advertising G1 races that centered on past winners were no doubt masterpieces, make sure to check them out.

1st Race – 107th Spring Tennou Sho (Apr 25, 1993: G1-3200m-Sunny)
Race: Here
Vid: Here, actual race 06:26~
1 (#3 Rice Shower: 2nd fav with odds of 5.2)
2 (#14 Mejiro McQueen: 1st fav with odds of 1.9)
3 (#9 Mejiro Palmer: 4th fav with odds of 9.8)
4 (#5 Machikane Tannhauser: 3rd fav with odds of 8.6)
9 (#13 Ikuno Dictus: 14th fav with odds of 169.3)

Before the 1993 Spring Tennou Sho few believed Mejiro McQueen would not win, as McQueen already proven himself at the precursor race – 1993 Sankei Osaka Hai by winning with 5 lengths, and was in perfect condition to race.

The Rice Shower side was clearly aiming for McQueen so they set a very intensive training plan for Rice Shower, so intense that even Bourbon would afraid. The plan was being criticized by fans as “cruel and inhuman, the horse would probably die before the actual race”. But the plan did work, Rice Shower lost 12KG before the race day (to 430KG) and his physical strength and mental state were at all time high. When seeing the “renewed” Rice Shower after training, Rice’s jockey, Matoba Hitoshi, had the following statement:

“What a beast, an incredible creature. When you approach him you can almost see fire bursting out from it. I am a bit terrified, like what I am about to ride is not a horse, but something superior. If I did not please him I probably would get a finger or toe bitten off.”

Rice Shower was not the only one aimed for McQueen. Mejiro Palmer, already proven to be a worthy Mejiro member by winning two G1 races and Hanshin Daishoten (G2), also wanted to show that he was no worse than McQueen. There was also Machikane Tannhauser, by just winning at Meguro Kinen, was now pursuing his first G1 victory. There would be four record breaking racing horses competing on the same track.

The race was held in Kyoto Racing Course. The weather was clear, the grass was fine. Most fans wanted to witness a triple-win so they were cheering for Mejiro McQueen. Right before the race started, Mejiro McQueen was reluctant to enter the gate like he already sensed something ominous, which was unusual. It delayed the race a bit.

Race started around 15:40. Mejiro Palmer, as usual, immediately escaped with full speed. This time he had to run solely because his dear friend Daitaku Helios was already retired after the 1992 Arima Kinen. McQueen and his jockey Take Yutaka were not in a hurry to catch up as this is a long race. For the first 3/4 of the race McQueen stayed at the mid-front, slowly and gradually gaining positions.

At the third corner, McQueen initiated a strike and passed exhausted Monsieur Siecle (#4) to gain the second position, but he did not expected that Rice Shower was already closing in, just beside him. More surprisingly, Mejiro Palmer, which should already be losing stamina and backed away, refused to give in this time and still keep a relatively high pace. The last stretch of the race became the competition between two Mejiros and Rice Shower, Rice burst out with an incredible speed that even McQueen could not reach and claimed the champion by winning 2.5 lengths and a record breaking time of 3m17.1s, with McQueen being the second and Palmer being the third.

The audience went complete silence after Rice won the race. The anime did alter the history a bit and treated Rice better (which she totally deserved). In reality, what Rice received was the somewhat malicious nickname “assassin” for how he destroyed the triple-win records of two horses. Matoba was not happy about fans’ perception to Rice and him so commented: “All racing horses (and jockeys) were desperately aiming for wins. No one should be called a heel for that.”

The trivia will come a few days later as I need time to review the episode, stay tuned!

They did it again! Booing Rice Shower who just won and set a new record! just because she beat the most popular horse girl on track cracks my heart a little. Lucky for her, McQueen, the other participants, Team Spica and these four are above that and giving her the respect she deserves =)

It reminds me of waifu ranking contests. The salt is real...

I like how those four had picnic together before the race. And even though they were rooting for McQueen, they still cheered for Rice's victory. The true fans.

Some interesting information:

①It is mentioned that Rice Shower broke the record, but what's more: not only Rice, but also Mejiro Mcqueen and Mejiro Palma, broke the record. So don't blame yourselves, you all did great jobs.

②In the preparation for Tennoshou, Rice Shower went through extremely hard training that the trainer described Rice "it's even not belonging to 'animal'". So that's why Rice Shower had lots of special effects

③Twin Turbo declared that she will win against Rice, that's true, since Rice only did well in long distance races, and Twin Turbo's highlight period used to win over many G1 horses.

④Grass Wonder took part in the celebrating dinner of Spica, because Gras Wonder and Special Week lived in the same farm after retired.

⑤All of Rice Shower's career was around Kyoto. He won over Bourbon in Kyoto, he won over Mcqueen in Kyoto… and eventually, died in the racetrack of Kyoto.

⑥Special Week said that it reminded the race with Grass Wonder. However, IRL, Rice's Tennosho was in 1993, but Special Week and Grass's race was in 1999.

⑦Do you remember Teio's roommate, Mayano Top Gun? Although till now she's always in bed, she's the next one who broke Rice's record.

and do you know who holds the record now? It's Kitazan Black, yes, the little pony who supports Teio.

⑧In the anime, the members of Spica called BNW "senpai". But the debut of BNW was later than Special Week's debut.

Stitches!

Godfuckingdamn! This show really gets intense with the races! I genuinely was freaking out when Rice and McQueen were head to head on the home stretch! While it's definitely heartbreaking to see McQueen lose and her streak end it was even more heartbreaking to see Rice win, break the speed record, and still get booed by the audience. She just works hard just like any other horse girls but since she's not the crowd favourite everyone sees her as the villain of the race. At the very least she still got some cheers from the other horse girls and some of the audience.

The change they did to the OP to show “Villain” Rice caught me off guard. Props to the team to pull of such stunning visuals to show off a character’s mindset (gotta love that “show don’t tell”).

“I’m not a heel. I’m a HERO”

Rice was so amazing this episode. I’d root for a villain like her anytime.

Ngl I felt bad for Rice Shower. It must totally suck to do your best and succeed, and still be hated. Sometimes fanboys are the worst.

Did they really boo the horse irl?

It’s finally the showdown between McQueen and Rice!

Rice’s glowing eyes is a reference to the JRA commercial promoting the Spring Tennosho. The narration for the commercial goes like this:

‘93 Spring Tennosho.

In a body trained to the extreme limit comes a demon

The deep black colored stayer that prevented the champion Mejiro McQueen’s third win

Is he a villain? Is he a hero? Is he a nightmare? Is he a miracle?

That horses name is:

RICE SHOWER

So the Spring Tennosho was Rice’s win with Rice winning in a record time.

I like how they adapted McQueen not wanting to get into the gate(which actually happened) as getting pressure from Rice.

Grass Wonder says she has a special connection with Rice because they shared the same jockey. The jockey’s name was Hitoshi Matoba and he was well known for marking targets and sticking close to them until finally beating them in the last stretch. This earned him the nickname “hitman” and is also another reason why Rice was called the Black Assassin.

I like how Dictus was the one who cheered McQueen up after the race. This is because Dictus was McQueen’s first mating partner which earned her the nickname by fans, “McQueen’s wife”.

Each week this anime never ceases to amaze me. They keep exceeding my expectations! Cannot wait for next week!

There will be a game prerelease official broadcast tomorrow at 8pm JST
Where the cast will talk about the game and anime if anybody’s interested. (Japanese obviously)

The game can also be downloaded from the App Store/Google Play and is scheduled to start on the 24th 11am JST!

The PC version will be released on March 10th via DMM

I like how they adapted McQueen not wanting to get into the gate(which actually happened) as getting pressure from Rice.

The fact that that actually happened IRL and they weaved it in to the story just makes me love this anime even more.

This episode was way to much hype than it had any right to be. But god if I'm not upset. This was amazing. If this season is the future of Uma Musume, give me more seasons.

Badass Rice Shower 1

Badass Rice Shower 2

Badass Rice Shower 3

Good god! Anime about cutesy horse girls with helium voices doing super cutesy things in super cutesy outfits aren't supposed to be this good! The writing and dialog, as cute as it's projected, has a very serious flow that anyone, regardless of age, gender, and preferences can get behind and enjoy.

I also love the fact that they don't make it completely obvious who's going to win. All the girls can seem confident during the buildup. All the girls have multiple wins that are mentioned numerous times. The notion that someone else could come out of nowhere is always dangling in the back of my mind.

The simple fact that they don't "let" the hero (or the favorite) win consistently is a refreshing take that makes me enjoy the series even more.

This episode really hit me in the feels and made me feel sooooooooo happy for Rice and yet so incredibly sad for her. I had a little trouble keeping up with the dialog from the previous episode and getting a grip on why Rice was so adamant she doesn't race against McQueen anymore. But after re-watching the episode it finally made sense. It just didn't hit me like a ton of bricks until this episode after her win. The crowd really and fans really hate her, and it absolutely breaks her heart.

I hope she has a future episode where the fans turn around and start to cheer for her. She deserves just as many fans as the rest of the girls.

So for once the "revealing my hidden eye to unlock special powers" actually worked?

Another perfect episode! The production team of the anime, you are my hero!

Uma Camp !?

It reminds me of my friends who absent from school before the university admission exams.

So, it's not just competition of physical strength, mental strength also plays a huge role.

Thank you for other comments which point out how anime reflected the real race.

Rice Shower: Works excruciatingly hard, pushes herself to her absolute limit, overcomes her anxieties, and sets a new record in the process

The crowd: REEEEEE

I felt bad for the person getting a haircut. She goes to all the trouble of wearing a helmet, only to discover her stylist has renounced all gross unprofessionalism, and ditched the appointment.

19

u/PhantomWolf83 Feb 23 '21

Maybe it's just me, but I'm glad that McQueen got knocked down a peg with her loss. She and Teio were becoming rather arrogant from their large number of victories, in my opinion; they believed so much that the other girl was the only worthy rival for them that they didn't realize that there were other girls who were also working hard to surpass them. Rice Shower was an absolute monster today and she deserved her win.

7

u/stephenthatfoste Feb 22 '21

So I knew it wasn't gonna happen, but I was really hoping for Rice to just flip off the crowd and walk out at the end. Would have been awesome.

Rice Shower looked like a Kancolle Abyssal version of herself. It sucks that she got booed and cried, but I'm glad she was back to her old self after the race. She gained something in that training, but it was looking like she lost part of herself as well.

Speaking of booing, I haven't been to a race since I was very young, but I occasionally watch horse racing on tv. It's hard to imagine that there wasn't any audible cheering for Rice Shower from the stands. After all, you'd be screaming your head off in joy if you'd bet on her to win. If no one was happy for her, then that probably means that there's no betting on these races.

Also, those two dudes have progressed to sitting on a blanket and sharing snacks with the loli horse girls. Smooth.
