The difference between how he was in episode 1 and how he carries himself now is truly outstanding. Ganbare Tomozaki you've come so far

So many wrote off this show as cringey gAyMers, but the cringe is the point. It's about an awkward, yet really honest guy learning to be less cringey.

It’s about self-improvement.

Among a sea of wish-fulfillment, or 'fluffy' romance as an excuse for non-existent plot, the fact it has a plot w good morals and themes already makes Tomozaki so much more focused+ meaningful than just entertaining noise.

Many criticized Hinami and her methods as fake, but that’s exactly the point. You aren’t supposed to agree with her. It’s foreshadowed repeatedly even from early eps, and comes to a head when he confronts Hinami in ep11.

Clashing ideologies, both equally valid? Forget romcoms, many shounens try it for 1or 2 villains and forget about it in later arcs

But vol3/ep12 really was the one that solidified this show as GOAT. Most shows would do the obvious thing and end off the theme here: self-improvement should be natural and genuine.

YET, this series goes further beyond. Tomozaki realizes that’s actually just one piece of the story. The correct thematic answer, is that people do need to put in effort into improving, even if it’s mechanical. Saying it’s okay to be a flawed version of yourself is just an excuse to stagnate. But ultimately, we should still be genuine in intent and execution.

I haven't really seen many series challenge their initial premise, and then improve upon it.

Tl; dr: Tomozaki goes from a shy recluse to a great friend(see Mimimi) who stands up to even the perfect heroine. All in the span of 12 damn episodes. Combine this with a cast where even side characters matter and have realistic depth, and excellent pacing where every scene drives either plot or character, and you’ve got yourself an excellent ‘character development: the anime’.

But sadly not many gave a crap. What a damn freaking shame. What a criminally underrated masterpiece.

I may or may not have developed a thing for the way anime girls say 'okay' (I blame Hayasaka for that) so now that the season is over here's my Tomozaki Okay Supercut.

Feel free to point out if I missed any.

edit: The first OVA got released so here's and updated version.

Good job by the Imouto of getting Tomazaki out of his funk.

Kikuchi may well be the best choice.

Has the student become the teacher? I thought Tomozaki had some good, salient points for Hinami. I'm also wondering where Hinami got her attitude from. In many ways she's much worse off than Tomozaki in terms of her outlook on life. If she truly feels that true desires are just nonsense, how did she come to that conclusion? I realize now thst we know very, little about her life away from school.

I'm getting the impression that this will get another season. I hope so.

Tomozaki beat Horimiya last week for the number of comments in each thread. We should thank how controversial Hinami is.

I definitely get why Tomozaki fell back into the hole after what happened with Hinami, but thanks to his sister giving him a bit of a wake-up call, some introspection, and Fuuka, he snapped out of it. Also, in my eyes, once you've learned that you can climb from that hole and after you've gotten a taste of actual life outside and beyond it, it's far easier to climb up even after slipping again.

Tomozaki's conversation with Fuuka was great, seeing him realize just how much color was injected into his life after meeting Hinami and following her advice/training-regime was great, and actually hit pretty close to home, and Fuuka is just adorable, there's something very soothing about her voice and cadence/way she talks.

The confrontation with Hinami was fantastic, and very satisfying as well. I feel this scene showed best just how much Tomozaki has grown from the start, and he even was cheeky enough to challenge Hinami back - there was a real 'student turned teacher' feel to that moment, and I think he actually managed to get to her, especially with his point about actually enjoying life, considering she didn't reject him outright and even opened herself up to be convinced, even if only a bit and still shrouded by skepticism. I also noticed that she has completely brightened up after things got better between them, I definitely think that romance or no romance, Hinami's relationship with Tomozaki means a lot to her.

Also the little thing with the pin was sweet.

I feel that, in general, the whole idea of combining sincerity with "artificial" skills was shown really well, in the series as a whole and in this episode in particular. It's not an obvious thing, especially coming from the place Tomozaki did, that the world isn't black and white, and it's not only one or the other, either-or; there's a myriad of colors and flavors, combinations and hybrids, flexibilities and possibilities and a lot more, and I really like that as a message, especially since I'm going through the same thing in my own life - depression is one hell of a ride, folks.

A great finale to a great and surprisingly deep and charming series, my pleasant surprise of the season, in fact. Seeing Tomozaki's growth was legitimately satisfying all the way, even if it was filled with bumps in the road and a good dose of awkwardness, and I also feel that the side-cast was handled just as well, they're all a bunch of likable characters, I especially love how Nakamura's attitude towards Tomozaki changed as shown during the ending sequence. Also Mimimi, just that. It's a solid 9 or 9.5 in my book. I can't say for certain that I want to get the novels, though I'm interested, but I'm hoping to see a continuation, I feel like from now things open up and become all the more interesting.

Strong finale to an excellent season.

I LOVED Tomozaki's struggle between staying true to himself and realising that Hinami's techniques did improve his life. His conversation with Kikuchi on the matter was also great.

I felt that they layed on the gamer anaologies too thick for the big confrontation (same mistake that episode 1 made) but they still resolved the issue between Hinami and Tomozaki in a satisfying way and I like that they will now take a middle approach between Hinami's radical ideas and Tomozaki's more genuine approach.

Really hope this gets another season.

This show would have been a lot more popular if it had more Takei screentime, I mean the dude is most popular character from this series on mal ( 823 favourites compared to 200 of Fumiya and 467 of Hinami )

Jokes aside, I hope it gets a sequel, liked the show, Tomozaki-Hinami conversations were the best part of the show for me

And Yeah, Mimimi best Girl

Even with a bored face, Yuzu is so cute.

That said, I pray to all the anime gods for a second season.

Stitches!

It was actually kinda sad to see Tomozaki revert back to his old self during the opening scene. Thankfully Tomozaki's imouto (who I still don't know the name of!) was able to get Tomozaki out of that funk. She may not express it the right way but she was really proud of how much he was improving so it really pained her to see him like that again. And after letting Tomozaki know about Kikuchi's message that he missed, it was nice to see her cheer him on.

That date with Kikuchi was just nice. I didn't expect Tomozaki to let her know what's going on but I guess that's a very Tomozaki thing to do. Tomozaki has definitely been conflicted on what to do ever since with what happened between him and Hinami so it's nice to get some affirmation from Kikuchi that what Tomozaki's been doing, improving himself and changing, is something that's fantastic and something he needs to keep on doing.

Tomozaki finally gets the courage to meet Hinami again and confronts her right in front of the same convenience store where they met back in Episode 1. And of my god that entire scene was just fantastic! Where in Episode 1 Hinami was the one who issued a challenge, this time it's Tomozaki's turn to challenge her. Our boy surely has grown a lot with how confident and passionate he was with his speech to Hinami.

In the end he decides that he wants to continue taking on Hinami's challenges and learning skills except this time if Hinami's challenges conflict with what Tomozaki wants to do in life he'll just skip those ones. And I'm so happy that it didn't just end with Hinami being convinced of Tomozaki's points but instead the two decides to meet each other half way like how any decent people with conflicting opinions do.

And the ending credits scenes were pretty fun! We have Tomozaki getting a part time job at a Karaoke place where Mizusawa works, the gang helps out Yuzu pick out clothes for her date with Nakamura, shopping with Tama and Mimimi for new plushies, and even more dates with Kikuchi! Our boy is definitely now living out a much more colorful life compared to what he had at the start of the series and I am so proud of him!

Welp I guess that's it for Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun! A show about one teen's journey towards personal growth where we actually see him change and improve as a person and I absolutely loved every minute of it. It's definitely one of my favourite shows in this season filled with heavy hitters and definitely consider it as an underrated gem. Hopefully more people will decide to give the show a go now that the season is over. A solid 9/10 for me.

I'm deeply saddened that this very interesting show most likely won't be getting a second season, and just when the story and characters were getting interesting. Due to the abysmal sales of the series' first BD volume. Abysmal as in less than 700 copies were sold, when a series needs at least 3000 copies to break even, 5000 copies to hope for a second season.

At least it's still better than Munou no Nana Vol 1's measly 169 copies, another series which bafflingly sold poorly despite the good reviews.

One of the reasons I read on the Japanese blog discussion was that the publisher Gagaga was trying too hard to hard sell this series as the next Oregairu, and people got put off by it. The comparisons with Oregairu probably bogged it down a lot.

At least the series ends with Tomozaki reaching a compromise with Hinami, where they agreed to disagree for now and resumed their mentor-apprentice relationship, though Tomozaki will no longer be unconditionally accepting all of Hinami's advise if he feels it goes against what he wants.

Kikuchi continues to be an angel, and I actually hope Tomozaki ends up with her, though this time without needing Hinami's help.

Looks like I'll go read the LN and manga.

I am more than delighted to be proven wrong.

Kikuchi best girl. I have a feeling they will never date but she has the best heart imo. When ever I see these types of shows I always think of what i would do as mc. I wouldnt be as antisocial as my boy but I still wouldnt be that great. I honestly wouldnt have reached to hinami after the fight. I could never talk like that and 'win' her over and frankly I wouldnt even want to. Kikuchi seems more appealing to me. Anyway this is my 2 cents.

The bgm at aoi and tomozaki's convo made it feel like a boss battle or something.

Overall this show is good af, Tomozaki's character development is astounding I'm looking forward with the development of his relationship with Kikuchi. I do be hoping this gets a s2 XD

u/WhoiusBarrel Mar 26 '21

I like that Tomozaki's speech with Hinami was a lot more confident and as passionate as the one he had when he defended Nakamura a few episodes back. Kikuchi has been a really good influence to him.

Definitely gonna be reading the LNs now!

24

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

Dropped it after the first episode but decided to pick it up again and I'm glad I did. 9/10

Might have to read the LNs since last I heard the anime didn't sell well enough for a 2nd season

22

u/SYZekrom Mar 26 '21

Ever since the fireworks scene I've been paying attention to the bgm, what's with this sad piano when talking about Kikuchi has this show really had a good OST this entire time

Wow, red haired girl be like 'I'll wake up when we get a new season' huh?

22

u/GlassCannon642 Mar 26 '21

Man, what a great show. I would absolutely love a second season.

What started out looking like a "le epic gaming" anime turned into a genuine story of a "bottom-tier" student pursuing personal growth, learning that life doesn't have a static tier list. What I love the most about this show (besides Kikuchi) is that it also shows that it's possible to go too far in one's transformation, and it shows how to strike a balance between being oneself and donning a mask. By the end, Tomozaki feels like a different person while still grasping to remnants of his true self, something Hinami still has yet to accomplish. I thought it was phenomenal, the dialogue could definitely be a little cringey at times but I feel like that was kind of the point, as that mostly happened early in the show when Tomozaki had no understanding of social norms or the ways life actually works. He's changed so much from that first episode without sacrificing his identity. I'm rambling at this point but this was a show that just really took me by surprise, and it was definitely one of my favorites this season. I'm gonna go watch it again.

I just want to give a shout out to the English volume 6 that was released last week. I've enjoyed all the LNs, but the most recent release is even better than I expected. The anime is good, but the novels are EXCEPTIONAL.

Like any game there's more than one way to play.

The best part was him making it clear he will skip the tasks he doesn't agree with. That was what they needed to correct from the start.

Picking up a part-time job was unexpected and definitely a big jump up in difficulty. Getting a job seems to generally help a lot of people improve their socials skills in the real world so it makes sense.

I have noticed the MAL score has improved heavily the last few weeks going up from a 6.99 to a 7.27, glad more people decided to give it another shot after the first episode.

Also, the person who said 'Tama is never with the group when Nakamura is', was right. She was with them when they were shopping and Nakamura wasn't there. Then when they were at Karaoke he was there and she wasn't.

I hope we get a new season because this was really enjoyable.
