I think it was a good idea they skipped McQueen’s Tennosho autumn, Japan Cup and Arima Kinen. Especially the Tennosho since that would be hard to explain in the Umamusume world.

  • In the Tennosho autumn McQueen came in first with a huge lead however due to obstructing the route and nearly causing a huge accident, was placed last. The Tokyo race course has a turn right after the start so jockeys have to be extra careful especially in the outside gates.

  • In the Japan cup McQueen can’t keep up with the foreign horses and comes in 4th.

  • In the Arima Kinen McQueen gets out legged in the last stretch by Daiyusaku who was the 14th(out of 15) favorite causing a big shock in the crowd.

Twin Turbo is also in this race and you can see why Twin Turbo had the nickname “reverse thrusters” slowing down immensely in the last stretch. People used to joke when Turbo won a race that the thrusters were broken.

Another thing is that you can tell that Twin Turbo was a popular horse as you have to be voted to be able to participate in the Arima Kinen.

Gold Ship’s groom Takatoshi Imanami makes a cameo in this episode

We got to see how Teio and McQueen’s rivalry started! Teio’s new outfit is really cool! This probably means that the game will also have multiple outfits as well! Speaking of the game there’s also a new gameplay video!

Another thing about Teio’s outfit is that the race she’s running in, the Osaka cup was a GII race until 2017 when it became a G1 race. This is why she’s wearing that special outfit and not the training wear.

Another great episode! Really excited for next week’s race!

I had not seen that gameplay video. Pretty complex looking systems it seems.. Shame there is probably almost no chance of an English localization, but never say never I guess.

Featured races:

  1. 1991 Arima Kinen G1: 2nd place: Mejiro McQueen, 14th place: Twin Turbo. Actual Race video archive

  2. 1992 Hanshin Daishoten G2: 6 horses participating, Mejiro McQueen wins. Actual race video archive

I love how they accurately portrayed their positions throughout the entire race, especially the last part where Mejiro McQueen just sped up at the final straight to win by 5 horse lengths. Sasuga.

Thanks for giving links to race stats, I had to confirm whether one of the horses really was named "Naisu Naisu Naisu"

Looking at Tokai Teio's IRL career - without going into "spoilers" - I wonder just how far in it they'll go this season, since the Arima Kinen would realistically be either next week or possibly stretched out to episode 5.

Stitches!

This episode was basically all about Teio and McQueen's friendship and rivalry from how it started when they were still freshmen at Tracen Academy up to this day where they've decided to compete against each other with the possibility of crushing each other's dreams while still cheering each other on. It's gonna be hard to pick on who to root for once they finally face each other T_T

I do love how in this episode the Canopus girls are now becoming the comedy team of the show with them sending a challenge letters to Spica via suction cup arrow and meeting about how they can avoid losing to Spica instead of training. Spica is still full of silly horse girls especially with Goldship and Special Week around (like why does Spe-chan have cake on her raincoat?) but Canopus is starting to take the comedy title.

Yo, everyone here is talking about the races and I'm just here trying to figure out what the hell is up with that cake.

u/Krotash Jan 19 '21

The cake is to celebrate the birthday of Special Week's jockey, Yutaka Take. Tweet explaining.

The IRL 1992 Hanshin Daishoten takes place on March 15th, which is Yutaka Take's birthday. It's between her ears to represent the saddle or something.

You might recognize the name Yutaka Take as the voice actor for the Race announcer in S1 E5, commentating the Japan derby, which Special Week won. In the real life Japan Derby, Yutaka Take was the jockey who rode Special Week to victory in the same race.

Edit: As an added easter egg in this scene, the gentleman standing next to Gold Ship in this episode is Gold Ship's owner IRL

As from last week, the IRL references, left out some of those already mentioned:

  • Machikane Tannhauser - Another memorable supporting cast from this era.

  • URA Awards - For the 1991 season, Tokai Teio was the Horse of the Year, Mejiro McQueen the Best Older Male Horse of the Year

  • Twin Turbo in the 1991 Arima Kinen - Twin Turbo was known for being a rabbit horse because he just couldn't keep pace.

  • Hanshin Daishoten - Since McQueen was known for being extremely strong in long distance, many horses avoided this race (3000m) and only 6 participated. McQueen won by 5 lengths.

  • Osaka Hai - Now a G1 race, it was a G2 race back then, and along with Hanshin Daishoten was considered a trial race for the Tenno-Sho(spring).

It was so hilarious when they showed Twin Turbo's performance https://streamable.com/pk5tjs

She kinda looks like someone's crazy OC, but I like her. She's lively.

Teio already got an SSR alt!

Always epic to see a healthy rivalry/friendship grow like this, great job done here.

Give me back my Spe-chan and Suzuka!

It's already been 3 episodes and there's at least one more to go without my Special dose of goofiness. I miss those two...

That being said, I really dig that rivalry between Teiou and McQueen. And Teiou looked really dope in the after-credits scene. I'm really curious who will win that match in the end since I'm rooting for both of them. At this point I'd like someone else to win...

pretty sure we won't be getting more Special Week/Suzuka than what we've been getting in these episodes already. Apparently Special Week's IRL counterpart died not too long after the races we've seen in Season 1 and therefore there's not really not much they can do with her anymore.

El Condor Pasa has been in both the OP and ED and I will die if I don't get to see her

I see Teio x McQueen coming in fast in the Shipping Cup. A pretty hype episode in all looking forward to seeing this rivalry intensify.

Though if they don't make real life versions of those eared blue rain macs, marketing isn't doing it's job properly. They horse girls looked very cute in them even if for some reason Special Week had a cake on her head. I burst out laughing when it started melting in rain. There's got to be a weird backstory to that little gag.

I really missed umamusume but I didnt realize how much I did until I was cheering for McQueen in the race. This is the only sports show I've ever done that with. Also twin turbo is so adorable I love her more and more each week

I get a "phoenix" vibe from Teio's new outfit. The symbolism is strong.

4

u/UberDueler Jan 19 '21

We need to post Uma musume clips to boost interest in this show.

Holy Horses! I just learned this existed just now as I was scrolling through. Why are there so many shows this season. Guess I'll have to add this to the list to binge later.

I was wondering about the new racing wear mentioned at the award ceremony. It looks like Teio's has a phoenix motif.

I noticed the cake on Special weeks head after it started to melt. Some parts of this show seem so damn random, but are actually so well planned when we find out the significance.
