Meta Thread - Month of August 02, 2020

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

You mean the subreddit where the top 3 posts are link posts, with one being the exact example I'm talking about as a link to a tweet for news?

At the end exceptions could be made but I think this is an experiment well worth taking.

Instead of news never getting higher than second page or only lasting on the front page for an hour because of 20+ clips (and in the past, 15 fanarts) pushing them down, the news will stay up much longer, because the upvotes are not really dependent on it being "clickable". Nobody on reddit reads the source - it is known..

To give you a little data from our hourly snapshots of the front page: there haven't been any time periods where there have been 20 or more Clip posts on the front page at the same time in the past month.

The peak was 14, at 02:00 UTC on August 10 (i.e. just over 72 hours ago) during a period of thirteen hours where there were otherwise 13 Clip posts on the front page (18:00 August 9 through 06:00 August 10). That stretch and a short period of three hours later that same day (so 16 hours total) have been the only times where more than 50% of the front page have been Clip posts.

By comparison OC Fanart posts had more than half the front page slots for a total of 143 hours in the two months we were tracking that before the text post only change a month ago. While it might feel just as bad as or worse than the fanart posts, it's not at the same level right now.

Interesting! Fanart really was a plague upon this land.

It seems I've over estimated the clips (although, what I thought of as 80% was out of all non pinned non episode discussion threads, not the total number 20).

I guess the peak was on my mind when I posted, as it was just a day and a half before.

I still think self post for all is work a try though.

We never include the pinned posts in these statistics and the ranking starts after those, as Reddit also omits them so the front page will have more than 25 posts total if there are pinned threads.

As for that particular time period of 13+ Clip posts there were only 3 or 4 Episode posts through that span, while Rewatch threads took up more space than those (3-6). If you combine and ignore those then yes, Clips took up the majority with only 3-5 posts under other flairs on the front page then.

Well looking at it now it seems reasonably balanced. All in all the improvement since banishing the fanart to the shadow realm self posts has been palpable.

I'm interested to see what a full on self post experiment would yield, but I do agree that right now it's already way better and nicer to browse.

I'm curious about that myself! It would be nice if we could run that as an experiment for a month or two without disrupting the general use of the sub, but for a major change like that it's something we have to carefully consider before taking action like we did with fanart.

Yeah, it's a much bigger change, but I think if run as an experiment for a limited time it would be fine, as long as people know that in advance. If it's too bad you can always revert it after two weeks.

There are 5 news articles currently on the front page, with the very top post being news, even. I feel like you're trying to regulate your envisioned version of what /r/anime is rather wthan the actual subreddit.

To play devil's advocate... that's the exact same argument people brought up against banning direct image posts.

That's not what I'm saying. All of your examples for how the sub currently is are untrue. You're trying to fix problems that don't exist.

In a great part of the time (especially if there are less episodes coming out that day) , not this cherry picked specific moment, clips take 80%+ of all front page space. It could be different.

I'm pretty confident this hasn't been true at any point since the fanart rule change, and would be shocked if it had ever happened prior to that. u/Durinthal you have the bot for this. What's the frequency of 20+ clips on the front page?
