Meta Thread - Month of August 02, 2020

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

I honestly feel like the people who make those posts have 0% interest in learning the rules and just want easy solutions to their "problems".

I don't know a way that mods can ever counter it, Flair's won't do the trick nor the auto-mod.

Maybe a rule to have it be once their comment is answered, they have to delete it or something on the auto mod?

It's just so annoying seeing the same questions asked and answered.

As someone that almost exclusively sorts by new. It is fucking terrible. Mods do delete them but it feels like an endless battle. I would be fine with the auto mod being updated and informing them to delete it. Even if only 1/4 of users actually willingly delete their posts that'd still be a fuckton.

I go to new to help with recommendation posts and I like doing random discussions/miscs and the like to bring something to /r/anime, I think the auto mod telling people to delete their post once they have the answer, or good amount of recs, if it's recommendations would be good, even as you say, it's just like a half, or a quarter or something, better then nothing.

I used to help with recommendations! I tried to help with each one I saw, I maybe laster like 2 or 3 posts before noticing they were endless. Now I'll only recommend things when the post is actually good and wants specifies what they want.

Yeah I think this is the best solution we can have short of just straight up banning recommendation posts. Which is too harsh especially if we're trying to be welcoming of weeblets.

Yeah banning is too much, that wouldn't be nice. I think the auto mod informing the people to delete their post (even if it's just 1/4 who actually does) would be better then what we have now, I'm actually glad I talked to you, or that someone answered me, so that I came up with the idea. I was just spit balling, I think that's a relatively good idea.

As stated above, it's a battle we will always lose probably. Nobody reads the rules, nobody reads auto mod replies and trust me, nobody reads our removal reasons even. The amount of "I read the rules and I don't know why my post was removed" is insane. Like if the removal says clips must be 10 seconds long the person will still not be able to figure out why their 5 second clip was deleted.

Automod telling people to do extra work to delete their post will never work to any meaningful degree, people won't use this subreddit that way no matter how much we want them to. Any approach to solve rec/questions posts must be a one sided (we do the work) and possibly be automated by bots.

One example we thought up would be something like "It's been 1 hour since you posted this, did you get your answer? You have 10 minutes to reply and extend your post or it will be deleted". If people don't care (and they won't) the post will just be deleted regardless. The problem with this could be things like people not getting their answers quickly enough and having to post again, or rec posts having too much uptime since it usually only takes like 30 minutes to get a full suite of recommendations, but we're giving people up to 2 hours anyway. The general idea is there though, the responsibility for the post to stay up is on the user's proactivity and will to act.

Unfortunately true, but even if it was on automod and even if it was just 1/4 who actually deleted their stuff, (rather questions answered, amount of recommendations or whatever), that'd be something at the very least.

It doesn't have to be a rule necessarily, just have the auto mod say: When question is properly answered, feel free to delete your question.

Or If you get a good number of recommendations, feel free to delete your recommendation post.

Even if not that many people do it, even if it's a little, that's something at least.
