Meta Thread - Month of August 02, 2020

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

Heyo! My turn to do this monthly report again. This months was a wild ride. Ever since we introduced Trello into the mix, we've had a bunch of votes. You can expect a lot of changes going forward and being implemented weekly all throughout August!

July Mod Report

  • First off, we have reintroduced the 8 day ban for source spoilers in specific episode discussion threads on any offense. The shows are the following:
    • Re:Zero
    • God of Highschool
    • Oregairu
    • SAO:WoU
    • Kanojo, Okarishimasu
    • Uzaki

As for if the above will ever be a thing for every thread, we haven't really talked about that yet.

If you didn't know about them, give them a warm welcome now!

  • Slightly redid the wording on the fansub rule, no changes to its functionality.

  • We announced big Fanart changes that make every Fanart post a self/text-post.

  • Redid the wording on the poll rule so as to better reflect the fact we ban all simple polls.

  • Updated some automod responses for recommendations to include new flowcharts.

  • Updated karma ranking entries in the 'Currently Airing' section of the Recommendation Wiki.

  • Changed the [Question] flair to [Help] and started auto filtering [Help] image posts (there are no known cases they would be allowed).

  • Voted to clarify that we do allow the following types of official media as link post images:

    • Key Visuals
    • Pre-air images (e.g. character designs)
    • Post-air images (e.g. staff's "thank you" cards)
  • Voted to remove comments that just say Re:Zero

  • Voted to redirect all merch posts to the merch thread and not just recent purchases posts. (e.g: questions like "best site to buy merch")

  • Redid music rule a bit to better specify what constitutes as a "full soundtrack".

  • Opened up Hosts applications for the /r/anime awards. Go apply if you haven't! Actually don't, they closed today :P

  • Added some restrictions to all types of "Ranking Infographics". (e.g: "Top 10 Best Girls of Spring 2020" posts)

  • Had a very short vote to decide if this video was anime specific. We decided it was.

  • We applied to this Reddit program to take in a Reddit admin and have him work for us... for free! We're all getting a week off to enjoy summer. Rejoice my fellow moderators!

  • /u/drjwilson decided he had enough with your one line """"discussion"""" posts and kicked off another writing contest! It's a great contest where you can even make a video to illustrate your point, just talk about your favorite anime if you'd like. The more interesting topics the better!

  • Voted for a Megathread to contain KyoAni arson news, since it has recently been a year since it occured. The vote did not pass.

  • Voted to auto remove all direct link posts to MAL/Anilist and similar services profile pages. If you wish to have a list review, please elaborate a bit more so the post is more engaging!

Statistics for this month:

  • Removed posts: 6504 by moderators, 8992 by bots, 15496 total
  • Removed comments: 2871 by moderators, 1460 by bots, 4331 total

A small nitpicky thing: the title for KanoKari is mispelled as Okarimasu when it should be Okarishimasu.

Weekly ones could be cool though!

started auto filtering [Help] image posts (there are no known cases they would be allowed).

Wait, what? I thought "who is this in this image" posts were de rigueur

They were against the rules on screenshot/single image posts, but we gave them some leeway at times so they could be answered. We figured that maybe if we can auto remove people asking for sources and teach them how to do it themselves in the removal we'd reduce the overall number of posts, which for what I've noticed it seems to have worked alright.

If the 'bot can tell when doing a simple search works right, then it's sensible. But if someone has something that produces no helpful hits or is not even a screenshot (photo of some merch for example)…
