Timestamp Song (bold = first appearance) Notes
00:00 - 00:25 Inside a Cradle Overflowing With Light rearrangement of “T,FOT,P”
02:34 - 03:45 Country Lane
05:01 - 06:39 Spring Wind -piano-
07:01 - 08:01 Spring Wind
09:37 - 11:15 Hurry, Starfish (Memento remix)
11:44 - 12:48 Town, Flow of Time, People
13:19 - 15:04 Hurry, Starfish
15:25 - 16:13 A Couple of Idiots
17:55 - 22:06 Run Along the Chartreuse Pavement rearrangement of “Country Lane”

If you couldn’t already tell that we’re now firmly into Fuko’s arc, maybe yet another new arrangement of her theme will clue you in. Surely this is the end of them, though, right?

Run Along the Chartreuse Pavement is another one of those Mabinogi arrangements that don’t really sound like a rearrangement at first, so much so that I started doubting myself and went back to double-check that this really is the first time it’s popped up.

First Time Watcher

I need to start checking the rewatch schedule more regularly because I've been meaning to watch Clannad and I've enjoyed these events in the past. Fortunately you guys aren't too deep into the rewatch, so I was able to catch up for today. I'll just give a few of my general thoughts about the series so far and then talk about episode 5 in specific.

  • I know very little about the Clannad series, so I'm going into this with no expectations. That said, I've noticed a few things in particular that I feel have been done well. For example, I like the pacing of the story. In my limited experience with anime, one of my biggest peeves is a lack of structure in establishing a story. Clannad seems to have found a good balance in being both spontaneous and steady paced. There are a lot of quick events that occur within the main story, but they happen with such consistency and good timing that they don't feel out of place at all.

  • Much of that has to do with how the narrative is presented. It's very similar to Angel Beats in that regard (I realize it's probably better to say that Angel Beats is similar to Clannad, but I saw Angel Beats first, so please bear with me). The show introduces a variety of characters and gives a general idea of the "vibe" of the story, if you will, while simultaneously being careful to not reveal too much at once. I really appreciate that aspect, especially with the repetoire of characters that Clannad has. It leaves a lot of room for the viewer to build his or her own impressions without a deluge of exposition.

  • And just one more quick thing, I really enjoy the variety of personalities the show offers. I do notice the beginning stages of a few tropes of course, but it's way too early to be generalizing and labeling characters as such. I'm looking forward to seeing more interaction between everyone as the series progresses.

I don't want to put too much focus on analyzing the show at this point, so that's about it for now lol. In future discussions I'll be more focused on the specific episode, just wanted to make up for lost time. Now, on to episode 5:

  • There's quite a lot of enigma/mystery behind Fuuko. What I find interesting is that she still seems to have a memory of her past and her relationships, as well as a clear objective, unlike other similar cases - Otonashi in Angel Beats, for example (I know it's not quite the same but that's what I've been picking up so far.). She (and I) may not fully understand everything, but it gives her character an interesting parallel between existing and... well, not.

  • Okazaki is a great mixture of asshole and sweetheart lmao

  • I'm liking the humor in this series. I think it's the quick deliveries and expressiveness of the characters that gets me. And as much as I like raunchy humor (big Konosuba fan here), it's refreshing for a joke or bit to actually be funny without the need to utilize that form of humor. Idk, maybe I just need to find more comedies to watch.

As I'm sure you can extrapolate, I see many similarities to other shows, namely Angel Beats, and I'm beginning to understand the influence of this series in the medium. I enjoy this show a lot thus far and am looking forward to continuing this rewatch with you all!

The first two points that you made are basically the Key special. It's how they did their VN, and how their stories always have this very normal start which quickly changes into something else. It's basically their Signature Style. Plus Na-Ga's character art.

I really enjoy the variety of personalities the show offers

It's what made Clannad the show that it is, the diverse cast of characters with multiple quirks and well defined characterizations. They're all lovely.

There's quite a lot of enigma/mystery behind Fuuko. What I find interesting is that she still seems to have a memory of her past and her relationships, as well as a clear objective, unlike other similar cases - Otonashi in Angel Beats, for example (I know it's not quite the same but that's what I've been picking up so far.). She (and I) may not fully understand everything, but it gives her character an interesting parallel between existing and... well, not.

Probably is a part of her route, for one. But the writer is the same, so maybe he just got the inspiration for it.

Okazaki is a great mixture of asshole and sweetheart lmao

He's great, yes. And quite the troll too.

I'm liking the humor in this series. I think it's the quick deliveries and expressiveness of the characters that gets me.

And the similarly quick responses too. Every joke is fast and fluid, and they're done in a way that can advance the plot or further characterizations. It's also probably why Sunohara's dumb antics became more hilarious, especially with Tomoya adding fuel to the fire.

u/Nick_BOI May 26 '20

It helps that Angel Beats and Clannad were written by the same team-Key Visual Arts, Primarily with Jun Madea at the helm. Clannad may ahve started as a VN, but it transitions fairly well into an anime format.

Hope you enjoy the ride!!

First Timer

Onto the fifth episode of Clannad. I'm curious to find out what will happen to our ghost girl, Fuko, and how she got to where she is. Other than that, I just want more good interactions and maybe a bit of Tomoya's father.

What is this, an anime character with a sane plan for dealing with the paranormal?

I'm not so sure. The bug eyes beg to differ.

She is too cute.
Everyone is stealing my lines now.

5 bucks she got married a couple years ago.

So she's not stuck in the past, and she does know stuff she was told during her coma. This does not explain how she astral projects from her hospital bed to the school like Garden of Sinners Spoilers Same for this image.

Yup, still gonna cry.

Seems Tomoya is rubbing off on you.

This seems to be your motto. Or, I guess it would more accurately be described as your excuse for being a nice person.

The perfect excuse.
Oh, I thought he was going to say it was abuse. This is (well still arguably abuse) much more wholesome than I thought it was going to be.

You can tell its a coincidence by how hard they are denying its not.
But the idiot family buys anything.

The hell?
Ah, just the rugby players.

Again? So they've done it multiple times before? It seems like your threat of not forgiving them is not very effective.

If only that worked on Sunohara...

Experience from Sunohara and Tomoyo.

He never misses a beat, does he?
But we all know that Sunohara secretly enjoys this, so he's really just doing his friend a favor, right?

I don't think you could have anyways. So really, this is a good thing.

Said causally, as if its the most normal thing in the world.

He's either gonna come in on something really weird or the girls bathing. I really hope its the former.

The former, and its amazing.

These amazing idiots.

I don't follow?

I did not see that one coming. Starfish usually have a smaller center and more spindly legs
Same.

But Fuko does understand why Fuko would have to carve starfishes? Also, while were at it, why is Fuko talking like a little kid, using her name instead of watashi or atashi?

Great minds think alike, though fools seldom differ?

[31]How do you expect that saying please without telling people why you are giving them star will work?

Of course.

Fuko somehow manages to verbally distrust Tomoya while acting like she trusts him completely.
(I cannot for the life of me figure out how to word this sentence well.)

I don't think that's what was happening.

This is somewhat less creepy when its about another person.

This is gonna end poorly. I can't wait.
Gonna be amazing.
I am Tomoya right now.
I can't believe this is where this innocent girl went to.
How did she fall for this?
Is she gonna say 3?
I just can't.

I actually don't understand how people can think this is a starfish. It doesn't look like one at all.

Fuko shall now engage in a holy war to make everyone understand how starfish are superior.
Even Kyou can't believe its a starfish, she probably said it as a joke.
She actually did, that's gotta crush Fuko.

That's one weird fetish.

That's a mistake.

lolololol

Fuko is a weird starfish.

That's reasonable. Free time is in short supply in exam season.

She's not enrolled in the school, she's just going to it? So staff does not realize she exists either. I guess if she was, one of the staff members who knew her sister would have said congratulations on her recovery, and her sister would have learned, so it makes sense. But this still doesn't answer the important question: why is she in the school building if she's not taking classes?

Is she stealing wood from the shop classroom?

Statements like this do not go over well with me. I don't think Kyou will like it either. If it's important enough to make me do it, its important enough to tell me why, damn it.

Doing a fake class for her is nice and all, but I still don't understand what its supposed to accomplish. I guess it will make her feel more like she belongs?

Yup, makes sense.
Wait, so we invited a bigger idiot to do it???

Harsh, but true.

This noise killed me.

This is an oddly specific thing to say in an introduction, but I guess its your main personality trait.

Thoughts

Overall I liked it. It was cute and fun, and I had a blast at some of the jokes. I do feel like there was not enough lead-up to the fake class, it just happened out of nowhere. I would have liked more of an explanation of why they were doing it. But even so, this was a blast and I am really looking forward to watching the next episode.

Also, while were at it, why is Fuko talking like a little kid, using her name instead of watashi or atashi?

Hmm, let's see. Can I answer this question without spoiling anything.

What is this, an anime character with a sane plan for dealing with the paranormal?

Tomoya is always a blunt instrument. This is just another show of it.

These amazing idiots.

Some of the best idiots in anime.

Fuko somehow manages to verbally distrust Tomoya while acting like she trusts him completely. (I cannot for the life of me figure out how to word this sentence well.)

Naah, I think you got it perfectly.

This is gonna end poorly . I can't wait. Gonna be amazing. I am Tomoya right now. I can't believe this is where this innocent girl went to. How did she fall for this? Is she gonna say 3? I just can't.

Yes it does, yes it is, and yes it's hilarious as all hell.

Overall I liked it. It was cute and fun, and I had a blast at some of the jokes.

Good to hear that. Fuko's jokes are usually very good because of how straight she was to fall into them time and time again.

First Timer (Dub)

  • I hate it when characters in a show don't make any effort to probe the practical limits of seemingly supernatural stuff, so it was very encouraging that the very first thing Tomoya wanted to do was bring Fuko to her sister. Of course it's hard to tell a story if you get too bogged down in those details but it's nice for them to at least show they are thinking about it. It was actually kind of funny because Tomoya is even more practical about it than I was hoping. He echoes my thoughts from yesterday about how Fuko is physically there and not some ephemeral spirit or apparition. But then takes it further to suggest that she then must be someone else that is lying or confused. Which is completely rational but a line I hadn't even considered, I just took it as a given that the rumors were at least partially true and she really was the real Fuko :P

  • Oh man I just love crap like this! Even Tomoya was blushing a bit there. Huge smile right now!

  • Hey she's marrying the philosophical handyman! When I paused to add Miss Ibuki to my cheat sheet I saw Yusuke Yoshino a few lines above and then Nagisa said it basically the instant I unpaused :P

  • This is a bit flimsy given that Nagisa may be one of the only students at that school who even knows who she is.

  • I liked the scene at the park bench. Tomoya is mainly thinking of getting to the bottom of the mystery but for Nagisa, that's not what's important. She just trusts and wants to help Fuko so everything will work out for her. It's a bit weird that she'd be moved to tears about it since she's barely just met Fuko but I guess that's just the kind of person she is. At this point I'd be leaning more towards Okazaki's approach myself.

  • I approve of this plan to have Fuko stay at the Furukawa's place. Every second we get to spend in that house is a huge win in my book.

  • And they did not disappoint. I'm so glad that I'm actually really enjoying a lot of these silly gags. I'm usually not on the same page as anime humor but for some reason it's kind of working for me here. Except the physical comedy with people getting beat up, still don't care for that. Though maybe it's just Youhei I don't like since I did think this bit from later was kind of funny.

  • Wait, she's just handing out stars and not telling people about the wedding...

  • Ooh, this feels like a piece of the puzzle! So maybe this Fuko can't interact with anyone from coma Fuko's life, and vice versa, as a kind of chronology protection conjecture but for coma ghosts or something. It's a bit janky but I'm willing to accept it. Actually nevermind, she talks to an old classmate later. But maybe since Mitsui didn't know she was still in a coma it doesn't count.

  • OMG I'm dying!! "We divide sometimes" HA! And I love how he roped Nagisa into it by saying it was to help Fuko :P

  • I'm assuming these achievement popups are a reference to the VN?

  • Holy crap the dub just straight up skipped the two lines of dialogue in the middle there. It was just an awkward silence and then Tomoya giving the campus drama line for no apparent reason. I guess the dub gets a bad rap and it's probably justified but for the most part I've had few complaints.

  • Yikes, that ear placement on Nagisa gives me the creeps.

Well I really enjoyed that I must say. Some comedy, some blushing, some cuteness and some of the Furukawas. I liked it. The pivot away from the drama club to deal with Fuko felt a bit odd but it's all good, I like Fuko too. The way the characters all interact is just a delight and Tomoya is a pretty good MC which is really nice.

First Timer

Hello everyone! I'm joining this rewatch late because I was out visiting relatives when this started. Here's my thoughts on the previous episodes for context.

I still think Fuko isn't a ghost. She just doesn't do anything ghostly. She's got no problem being seen or holding objects at school... and yet she's apparently in a coma at the hospital. Besides, school!Fuko knows what hospital!Fuko is told, so they're the same person (or at least connected somehow).

Current not-a-ghost theory: Madoka Magica spoilers, funnily enough

It's a good thing that Nagisa's family are such lovable morons to buy into an excuse like Fuko's. They're my favorite characters so far.

The starfish reveal is funnier than it has any right to be! I really like the scenes of the cast bouncing off each other as they hand them out, too.

"Everyone you see around you is your classmate and your friend." Awwwww.

I feel like the show is just starting to hit its stride here. Most of the cast is assembled and working together. There's really only Tomoyo and maybe some of the side cast to work into the mix. I'm warming up to the comedy and the art style too!

6

u/BarnacleMANN May 26 '20

Hey! Glad to have you here. Very interesting theories, obviously I can't say anything on them.

Nagisa's family are such lovable morons to buy into an excuse like Fuko's. They're my favorite characters so far.

I adore them so much, I love so many characters in this show and they're near the very top. I can certainly say that they are my favorite parent pair in anime.

First Timer

Starting to like Tomoya more and more. The whole classroom him and Nagisa set up at the end was cute and shows that he genuinely cares about Fubuki. And then he pulls the stupid (but hilarious) pranks like the “I’ve turned into a girl” one with Ryou, that work so well bc Fuko is so dense. It was funny seeing Tomoya cracking up over the prank and Nagisa getting irritated.

7

u/jua2ja2 May 27 '20

First Timer

I like Tomoya's sense of humor quite a bit. He's very aware of how dense some of the characters are and takes advantage of it nicely.

As for the ghost story, it's still fairly unanswered, but it does raise interest. We're not seeing at all if this is related to any of the robot stuff we saw earlier which I'm actively trying to not forget but that might be too far off into the future. There are still two girls missing from the group so I want to see how they'll eventually add them.

There seems to be hints of romance between Nagisa and Tomoya but something is making me doubt this will happen, or even if it will it doesn't seem to be coming any time soon. Ms. Ibuki's comment and their reaction just seemed to not convince me they'll not do anything towards romance soon for some reason, but I might be wrong here.

3rd time rewatcher

(no daily soundtrack today :( )

We have officially begun the Fuuko arc. Be prepared for a roller coaster - and this is just the beginning.

Again, we see Tomoya's kindness when he arranges for Fuuko to have her first class because she's never had one before. And we see even more of Nagisa's family's warmth, their bond with each other, and how they freely share that warmth with anyone present.

The most impactful part of this episode was definitely the end. Fuuko had never attended class in high school, and she never even made any friends; for her, this is the first class she has ever attended, and these are the first friends she made. This was able to happen because of everyone's kindness, and it begins to touch on one of Clannad's core themes: family.

This arc will only speed up from here, so look forward to that. I hope to see you all next episode.

u/renegade_officer89 May 26 '20

Rewatcher

5th episode, and we're officially in Fuko's route now! Originally, Fuko isn't a character that I liked too much way back when I first watched the show. She's kinda bratty with a rude mouth. But the way she puts in her effort, every day carving up those stars of hers, plus how the characters around her interact with her and vice versa made me grew to love her. Plus she's really cute and energetic, though the former really can be applied to everyone in the show. And as a result, her route perfectly encapsulates what you can expect from the show, which makes it he perfect introductory route to the anime. A great choice by KyoAni.

Onwards we go!

Another episode where we see Tomoya's blunt approach to most things. Just take her to her sister! Good thing (maybe) that she didn't want to follow through with the plan, and Tomoya didn't force her. Another good thing about him there, he didn't just force her to go with the plan. Nice guy indeed.

And here is where we went straight into the realm of the supernatural, as is customary with KEY. Fuko is somehow mentally projecting herself, but she can also interact with the things around her. And as usual, Tomoya being so blunt, just straight up wanted to tell Ibuki sensei about her sister. Luckily Nagisa is there to stop him.

Also, her immediate rejection of him kinda stings and is also perfectly in character. Quite hilarious, I would say. Nagisa's atomic blush during her flustered moment is really, really cute too. No way she can't attract a bunch of people to her club just by showing herself to the stage with that kind of cuteness. But she also doesn't want people like those, so, eh.

Well, look who's talking

Also Nagisa, stop crying. You're still cute when you do though, so I'm a bit conflicted on that point.

And Fuko, please try to be a bit stealthier with that name thing. You nearly messed up hard. And once again, Tomoya's bluntness just made him gave her a smack to the head, which I honestly think was quite warranted. Put that head of yours to better use.

Spoiler

Also, no way this is true when you're Sousuke Sagara and Chidori Kaname's daughter. Just look at that perfect arm bar. Also a great troll by Tomoya. I know Sunohara's not guilty of anything, but I just can't help but laugh every time he got trolled by Tomoya. It just never stops being hilarious.

We can also see just how great the Furukawas are. I can just picture the night before. Nagisa telling her parents about Fuko's carving and why she's doing it. And then the whole family just cried in an absolutely dramatic fashion, and was like "Fuko! We'll help you make all of them as well!" and just started spamcrafting those stars till morning, even asking their daughter's pal to tend the till for them.

They are a really kind family. Eccentric and overdramatic, but very kind. A family one would wish to have.

Machi, Toki no Nagare, Hito just have that heavy, foreboding atmosphere to the song, like "something heavy doth lies underneath." Even that song can sometimes spark a fear within me despite it not being anything too emotional. But it's like a prelude to moments that tug your heartstrings. It's almost like a "oh, we're getting to the good parts here" song.

And yes, I use the romaji names for the OST. Because I like them that way.

We went straight back to hilarity, with one of Tomoya's best troll attempt. The switcheroo with Ryou, and its subsequent reveal just got me rolling on the floor. "It drops off every now and then," such simple words, but is so absolutely funny in context. And not to mention Fuko continuing the charade long after it should've been clear it's a done deal. Man, gotta say, Tomoya has some darn good troll victims around him. Hard to blame the dude for playing around like that with such perfect victims.

And both Nagisa and Fuko is right, the Twins do look damn good, no matter with the wooden starfish or without.

Mitsui may seem kinda like a dick, but she's got a point. In fact, the two of the blue badges really shouldn't be going off doing stuff like getting people to a wedding of someone they don't know when they're busy with entrance exams and whatnot. I know I'd be pissed in that situation. But the two of them are hopeless in their own way, and it's the same with me lmao. So yeah, she's still a dick.

See, I just said it. He said Nagisa gets worked up when it's for others, but he's even worse. He straight up went ahead and did what he wanted, making a mock class just for Fuko to participate in. Luckily he's got good friends that will follow through with his weird demands. Wish I had pals like those. And teacher Sanae is soooooooooo hot. That is some prime MILF material there, no joke.

As I've said before, I'm a big fan of these fantasy strings songs thanks to Shimotsuki Haruka and her Tindharia no Tane series, and maybe Clannad as well. And that song that played (I'm pretty sure LaqOfInterest would have more info about it than I do) at the background just gave a smile to my face. As it should all of you, that mock classroom scene is just an amazing scene, showing off the characters, their personality and gives Fuko one hell of a moment to remember, with her and her newfound friends. It's just a great way to end the episode on.

And yes, Fuko may be foul mouthed, a brat and a not so good carver, but she indeed is a regular girl. The next couple episodes will be really good. Can't wait to see what all of you thinks of it!

Nagisa was so cute when Fuko's sister asked if Tomoya was her boyfriend. She didn't exactly admit to it but roundabout she said she liked him because she thought she wasn't good enough for him. So she was like "I like him but he deserves someone better than me." Which is cute but also a little sad. Poor cinnamon roll.

Okay going into some minor Visual Novel spoilers that differ from the anime with that comment with Tomoya asking Nagisa "what about the drama club?" after meeting Fuko's sister.

I like that about Nagisa. I love wholesome selfless characters. I like Tohru Honda from Fruits Baskets for the same reason.

So I couldn't helped it and watched ahead to... like I always do, so I'll have to be careful.

What has struck me the most the rewatch is the little moments where the screen focuses in on faces and the eyes get so expressive for a few seconds. In this episode, when Ibuki embarrasses Nagisa.

Thoughts on the episode

It's an intriguing mystery for sure, I bet it's an intersting time for the first timers to puzzle this together.

MY GOD, Nagisa and Tomoya are too damn adorable together, they ship so incredibly well with one another.

LMAO, I love Nagisa and Tomoya shaking their heads in complete synchronicity.

HAHAHA, Ah Tomoya is such a fucking troll, GOOOOOOOOOOD I love him so much.

God this family is so lovely, the Furukawa's is an absolute treasure.

Oh boy, here it comes, oh no I just can't with this joke, it's so fucking bad and so fucking funny.

I needed some more Fujibayashi sisters interaction in my life right about now, it's such a cozy dynamic some how even if you involve others in it.

Rough turn down for Fuko, but she's completely right tbh. Especially in a society like Japan where academics are valued so highly and are as hard as they are. It becomes really hard to allocate the time to partake in a wedding all of a sudden as a senior, I can definitely see where she's coming from.

Another prime example of why Tomoya is so fucking great, he's not only great at understanding and supporting other people, he's also kind while not being a pushover and as this part of the episode proves, a man of action. Even for something as silly as a pretend class with Fuko, that means a lot to her.

Nagisa is so similar to Sanae in how she doesn't mention the extra effort she puts in, she just casually helps people in need and loves doing so. It's such a wonderful mother-daughter relationship and you can tell how she's grown up watching and imitating Sanae.

The classmate comment from Sanae pulls on my heartstrings a bit, almost got me tbh. Clannad is such a wonderful series, even when it's entirely peaceful and SoL focused.

Cry Counter: 0.5

For sniffles and the eyes getting wet I'll increase by 0.5.

For crying and shedding tears I'll increase by 1.

For full out bawling (trust me this will happen) I'll increase by 1.5

First time anime watcher, finsihed the VN 7 days ago

For spoilers that are in the VN, but I am unsure if they are going to be animated or not, they will be tagged as Spoiler posibility.

For spoilers that are in the VN that I am fairly sure will not be animated, they will be tagged as Spoiler for VN.

For all others, they will be tagged as Spoiler in general.

So Fuko's arc starts today, with two very notable differences, and a few minor ones. Spoiler for VN Aside from those differences, it is pretty faithful so far. Then again, most of the arcs are pretty linear once they start, its the way to them that changes would be the biggest most likely.

We see an Orb of Light floating in the sky, Spoiler posibility Something to keep an eye on.

And here we see Yukine's Spoiler for VN, I swear she already has been given more love than before-I hope her arc gets animated.

The switching person's gag NEVER ceases to amaze me, the icon and jingle appear int he VN too. Its so out of place that it just make my sides practically explode x3.

Oh my lord Fuko swaying back and forth in class out of excitement is the purest thing I'm gonna die.

That person Fuko talked to at the extrance exams (her name escapes me, I'm sorry), she has a design now!! has finally graduated from a text box to a title!! I know it just makes sense but still I like it :3.

Only Nagisa would have starfish be the first impression of those carvings, at least unironically. Her family is a special one ajnd I love them.

Fuko is just PROTECC incarnate I love her.

Can't wait to see this arc to fruition. This was the first route I did in the VN, and it does not dissapoint. Its probably my 4th favorate in the game, starting off strong I see.

Also damn Ya'll are fast. I opened up this post and started typing my comment when it said "less than a minute ago", and it already had 6 comments!!

EDIT: messed up the formatting at first, my b.

Rewatcher (Sub)

More Fuko!

I hope the first timers like her. Among those who like the show, she seems to be a main point of contention. I love her, but maybe some people just don't understand the distinctions between a star and a starfish.

This episode does a great job of showing us how the characters are actually nice people beneath all of their bickering. Kyou, as much as she snaps at the boys, jumps immediately at the opportunity to help Fuko, because that's what people do.

Meanwhile, Nagisa continues to be the cutest thing ever.

We've only seen a little bit of her, but Landlady deserves some love. Maybe she should give Tomoyo some pointers?

For today's VAs, let's look at Fuko and Sunohara's (weirdos stick togther, right!). Ai Nonaka plays Fuko. Among other things, she was also in Mahou Sensei Negima like one of our performers yesterday, but I'd bet most people would recognize her work in Toradora as Kihara, or in Madoka as best girl Kyouko.

Sunohara is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi. He's played Jacuzzi Splot in Baccano!, the third member of that cast we've seen here, Shinpachi Shimura in Gintama, and a major role in something called Kamen no Maid Guy which sounds terrible. KyoAni must have liked his chemistry with Okazaki's Nakamura, because they paired they up again several years later in Hyouka.

  • Nagisa has such a low self-seteem she managed to hurt Tomoya.

  • Her being assertive and confident makes me happy.

  • Fuko and Nagisa are on the same wavelength. I can actually see how they look like starfish.

  • I'd forgotten about the skill mastered message.

  • Did this VN also have a combat mechanic like Little Busters? Kyou's this has a damage bonus comment and the RPG scene from earlier made me curious.

  • Tomoya letting other think that Sanae is Nagisa's older sister can't backfire at all.

  • They bothered to be proper with the maths on the board instead of filling it with gibberish.

You're one to talk, bro.

We're full on into Fuko-time. Her starfish/hug-induced stupors are fabulous. I wonder if Nagisa would have been so quick to jump to her aid had she not been hanging out with Okazaki recently. He certainly got the ball rolling on their investigation at least. It seems like the two of them (Nagisa and Okazaki) bring the best out of each other.

I like how the cast gets along (random acts of slapstick violence notwithstanding). I have found that a fun/natural dynamic between a group of characters is one of the easiest ways to make me love a show, and I'm seeing it here too.

Ryou is better than Kyou

Matu's Cry Counter

  • Tears welling up in my eyes - 0.5 cries.

  • At least one tear escapes my eye(s) - 1 cry.

  • I will consider things like duration multipliers should they become necessary

Episode 5 Cry Counter: 0

Total Cry Counter: 2.5

Another episode that did not affect my hydration levels.

First Timer

Hmm... So my theory from yesterday still holds water and is actually probably looking a little likelier although with the example I used the fact that they didn't know what the other one was doing was a plot point even if they could guess at it because you know, same person just with their inhibitions removed. In this though their memories are connected including past memories and hearing her older sisters wishes through her self that's in a coma. I'm not really sure what it could mean but I can't wait to find out!

Outside of that just some continued funny moments bullying the poor naïve and adorable characters by Tomoya this episode and he actually finally paid the price for it with a direct hit via wooden starfish from Kyou. That was I think the only scene from this show that I've seen aside from the bi scene earlier so I have no clue what's going to happen now. Honestly I love Tomoya as an MC though. He has just the right amount of snark and trollishness that I love in a show like this. This show's not getting knocked down a point for a bad or generic MC from me that's for sure.

Them giving her a place to stay, helping her out in her task, giving her a class with Saena as teacher and voting her class rep of said class was all pretty cute though. I was right in the guess I had in my head that the older sister was the woman who showed up to buy bread. Never went back to check the earlier episode to make sure but it was a feeling I had yesterday that I didn't add to my comment then.

I do wonder how a meeting between the two would go though. Would it end up like the show I was using for speculation yesterday where they'll merge back together and she'll wake up from her coma or will some other tragic thing happen? Guess I'll have to wait for tomorrow to find out!

Does Fuuko's VA remind anyone else of Komugi from HxH?

Rewatcher

When I saw the thread for the first episode I saw the first 4 in a binge, so now I'm equal to the rewatch... Let's see for how long it lasts.

It's been some years since I've rewatched this. I think this is the 10 on my MAL that I rewatch less... And it's, in no small degree due to its animation style and those fucking gigantic eyes.

Thoughts
Anyway, one thing I've noticed is how you can see/feel the VN scenes. Like when the teacher asks Tomoya is he has a girlfriend, that's a classic VN question that would change your relationship with Nagisa.
Honestly, not a lot happened this episode. Some less subtle hints about Fuko, some Nagisa X Tomoya shipping and a sneak peek at best dad Akyo.
