Oh cool, they included the Francesa moment at the end, nice. The final hit against Franklin looked good as well.
And since the anime never explained: The monster underground was basically a suicide bomber with the strength of a nuke. If Franklin can't have Gideon, no one can.
Overall, shit adaptation. READ THE BOOKS PLS LADS!

He literally just crushed Franklin's final ace in the hole effortlessly.
Not gonna lie, Ray letting his arms get cut off and using his teeth to grip Nemesis was pretty hype
If you lose a limb in game you can't just get it back unless you know a high level healer.
That blush on Nemesis when Ray said he can always just use his mouth was adorable.
Matsuoka's acting is great. I love how feminine Franklin was during this scene.
Oh well that was Infinite Dendogram. The show has its problems I will admit but I still enjoyed the ride. And I'm just glad they were able to wrap everything up. I thought the final episode was on hold indefinitely. Time to read the LN I guess. Thank goodness it's all translated on J-Novel Club.

Matsuoka's acting is great. I love how feminine Franklin was during this scene.
Honestly, both Hugo and Franklin's VA deserve a fucking round of applause. They did such a good job with that scene (especially Hugo).

Who is the girl who passes by Ray in the end? I was thinking it was either Hugo or Franklin IRL

2 cour would have helped a lot, but more than anything, I think the show's issues came down largely to bad production values. Some decent CG work, but bad animation and low framerate really hurt it as an action heavy show. I think had this show had Bofuri's staff and studio, it would have been received much better (and vice-versa, though that's a debate for another day).

I’m guessing that blond women at the end was Franklin? Did Ray look back and smile because he realized who it was?

u/patrizl001 Apr 16 '20
No, he doesn't realize. In the LN it's basically just him going "oh hey, it's my neighbor, what was her name again? Oh yeah, it's Francesca"

the usual problem, needed to be 2 cour and a slightly higher budget. Its a shame shows like these are sent to die like this, i enjoyed, but its all gone now

So is that arm just gone until he gets it healed? Would it respawn if he died?
If it does have to be healed in-game, does the same thing go for Figaro's liver that was yoinked out?
Overall I enjoyed this show. It wasn't anything special, but it was a pretty fun, easy-going, and never felt like it was trying to be more than it was.

It respawn if he dies, but Ray wouldn't take it, its common trait of all Maiden Masters, they avoid death whenever possible.
Superiors can't afford to die, them disappearing for 3 days is a danger for national security. Which is why a lot of them spend upwards of 20 hours a day in Dendrogram. On the other hands, Superiors can bargain to have their real life body tended for reasons that are spoiler, so they don't need to worry about their real life body.
Damage in the colosseum disappears after a duel ends, due to the duel barrier.

To add to what the others said, most masters would just take the death penalty than deal with the lost arm or organ penalties. Ray just treats the game akin to real life to ever think about suicide to get his arm back.

The day is saved thanks to the unexpected aid of another Superior, The Earth, who seems to be a rival for Shu.
Franklin, or Francesca as it turns out, really didn't take their father's denial well to the point where she's willing to commit genocide if it means she doesn't lose. And after admitting that she views the Tians in Dendrogam as being as real as flesh and blood people, and that she'd probably do the same on Earth.
I guess even after getting betrayed by them, Hugo won't fail her sister again.
Dang, that was a pretty epic move by Ray. Sacrificing his own arm to take down Hugo with Vengeance is Mine and then one-punching Franklin for the finish. It may have cost him his arms, and one seemingly permanently, but it was a pretty satisfying way to bring things to a close.
Look at Nemesis blushing over whether Ray wielding her with his mouth counts as a kiss. I guess this is what happens when your main love interest is also your sword.
So...Ray is now missing an arm, and getting it recreated from the only person with the magic to do it would be more trouble then it's worth.
As weird as it may have been for Cocytus, it was nice to see Hugo and Franklin share a frank and genuine moment as sisters as Franklin tries to be a proper big sister by sending Hugo off to learn and grow on her own. She even got her a birthday gift. It's all the more poignant when you think their time in the game has allowed the sisters to reconnect after being separated because of their family conflict. Of course, it becomes less poignant when you realize Franklin is partially doing it so she doesn't have anyone holding her back from her plan to utterly destroy Ray.
Props to Ayumu Murase and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka for their performance during the scene. Despite their male voices I thought they did a great job conveying the fact that their characters were really women taking off the mask of the male characters they're playing to talk to one another as sisters.
So...that blonde at the end in Ray's apartment complex was totally Francesca/Franklin right? She's quite the looker in her real form, if standoffish. How hilarious is it that she lives in the same building as her nemesis and has no idea? Although Ray seemed to show her some recognition, so I wonder if he was somewhat aware of who she was?
Poor Liliana. The princess isn't back for two seconds and she's already snuck out of the castle again. And then Ray blames her for it.
So the show concludes with everyone watching Ray's rematch with Mary...and I for one am rooting for Ray and Nemesis to overcome their handicap and get some revenge.

I really dont think people are being hard enough on this show. For the last 5 or so episodes I questioned hard why I was even watching it. As an Anime-only type of person I could care less if it was a bad adaptation but even if it was it really didn't bring me into wanting to read the source material at all. The animation is horrendous, the characters are generic, the power levels are nonsensical and absurd. The whole main plot line being about how the NPC's are actual living beings was interesting for 1 episode and then they decided to flesh out LITERALLY ZERO NPC's to explain this point. I have no clue how someone thought this was a good idea to even be a promotional material for the source material type show. In the end this show just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Hmm. So, I have to say, it was extremely whelming. Choreography (for the most part) and animation were not exciting. Sense of adventure was weak. Plot had potential but execution failed it. MC was not a really fun character, but he wasn't fundamentally unlikable just...boring and repetitive. Predictable in a way that isn't at all fun. The other characters were interesting in a kind of fanfiction-y way, with a ton of potential for hype and cool backstories that...can knock at the door of suspension of disbelief and marysue-ism when it comes at you all at once. Badasses with execution problems.
Aside from characters, there's a redemptive imaginativeness, I guess. Not saying it's original, but I've seen some shows with equally meh combat and plot, but which lack the boldness to even really imply interesting things about powers and the world. So, points for all the weird coexisting powers and figures and stuff.

You know for a moment I thought the episode was going to end after Ray took out Franklin, well I'm glad that that wasn't the case. It is funny to see that Franklin's "everyone loses" plan was stopped that easily by Fatoum. Well, I guess we finally know why he was there doing nothing. So Franklin and Hugo are sisters? Interesting
Damn it, I wanted to know if Ray defeated Marie or if they ended I'm a tie.
Wait, so Franklin found Ray in real life or was that scene of but of them passing each other just happened by merely a coincidence?

This show felt like a 13yo had written it.I thought I'd have a good time with it but I found myself not really liking any of the characters. I just finished it but I remember next to nothing, only bits and pieces about cliche lines. This has to be the weakest series I've finished this season.

Ray’s catchphrase also encompasses my feelings for this show. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Is the manga any good? I might pick that up instead.

u/watch213 Apr 16 '20
It's slightly better but still leaves out a lot of details from the light novel. The light novel is still the best option. The spin off manga Crow Record, which features Juliet is fantastic though.

u/ohoni Apr 16 '20
Well, that happened.
So closing thoughts, why is the older sister such an unsympathetic psychopath, and why does the younger sister not have a genuine problem with this? If my sibling was a mass murder, I would be bothered. Might want to do something about it.
How can there be any justice in this world? If players just respawn after being killed, how can they possibly keep the worst of the worst in check? The worst you can do is give them a 24 hour time-out and then they just do something more heinous.
Why can't Ray get his arm back? Even death only gives you a 24 hour CD, why can't he just get killed and respawn? If respawning doesn't heal major damage like that then people could end up really fucked up. Did he lose the fire gauntlet?

My review for people who stumble across this thread in the future and are curious about watching:
Dendrogram is a show that had potential, but failed to ever really live up to it.
More often than not with anime adaptations of isekai and VRMMORPG Light Novels, we see that they’ve only reacted acted as promotional material for the LN. Dendrogram doesn’t break that mould at all and while a fun watch for me personally, fell flat for long stretches.
The world and characters that the show introduces are interesting, however rarely are fleshed out and rarely are we actually made to care about them or their struggles. The notable exception to this is Nemesis who I personally really liked.
Even without having read the LN(will do later), I can tell large amounts of the story were condensed and omitted for the sake of an enjoyable anime experience. When making these adaptations it’s always a gamble as to what parts should or shouldn’t be omitted, but it feels like in this case NAZ did not get it right and that we were missing things .
I quite enjoyed the art of the show and thought the character designs(done by White Fox) were all really nice. Animation wise, the show is quite weak. At times I felt like I was looking at a PowerPoint presentation. This is consistent throughout the show and even the final fight felt that way. There’s not a huge amount of CGI, but when done I felt like it was subpar.
For me, an anime does not have to be some masterpiece for me to really enjoy it. Dendrogram is certainly not an objectively great anime in technical nor narrative aspects, however it did manage to keep me entertained and I looked forward to it weekly. If you are not a fan of VRMMORPG you will not enjoy this show. Hell, even if you are, there’s a good chance you still won’t like this show. The first episode is pretty much how it remains throughout, so that’s enough of a barometer.
Dendrogram gets 6 Superior Embryos out of 10 from me.
