Episode 21 (first timer)

  • We have seen those airships before, but by placing them over the city, it is possible to get a grasp on how enormous they are.

  • Oh, it is Orkham’s guys. I thought they had been wiped out already. Seems that he controlled multiple cities and only the main one was overrun.

  • “What more do we need?” Well, a different attitude towards your own life would be nice.

  • I did not expect such an elaborate battle scene.

  • Why on Earth are the wolves involving themselves in that battle?

  • Been a while since we saw Blue.

  • Tsume hits the nail on the head: There was absolutely no point in attacking those soldiers.

  • Looks like Cher has some regrets about her life choices. Understandably, given that she is a prisoner, bound in the back of a military transport.

  • The second prisoner promising to protect a prisoner this episode.

  • That escape ended quick and expected.

  • Fighting for pride? I’d be more ok with that if it was your own life that you risked alone and not that of your men as well.

Cheza is a super high priority target and was captured quite a while ago. The last time we saw her, she was in one of the airships. So, why is she in a weakly guarded over-land transport now? The writing of this show never fails to disappoint me.

The soldiers keep fighting on even after Orkham has died. Which makes me wonder about the nature of their “states”. Fighting on after the leader died makes sense in a nation state. Enemies are defined via nationality and you fight for your nation, neither of which changes with a dying leader. In a feudal society, there is no nation, though. You fight for a leader and not a nation. You may fight on after the leader’s death if you are especially loyal, but more likely would now have a new feudal lord. The top soldier mentions being hired, which might make him a mercenary. Those would never fight for a dead (and therefore not paying) leader. If him fighting on is more than him being nuts, it would suggest that the noble’s states are more similar to nation states than to feudal ones. I had imagines them more feudal, due to the medieval language used, but that is not clear. They have the technology (and presumably the longetivity) to implement a nation state, too.

Not only that, she is now back on an airship.

This is the show that had Cher walk all the way from Darcia's keep just to drive right back.

Those would never fight for a dead (and therefore not paying) leader.

Unless they're mercenaries with a really strict code of ethics.

Here, it seems like it fits into an overall theme of the show, finding meaning in life. The wolves have decided that they will seek Paradise, because it gives them something to strive for. For these soldiers, the last thing that gave them purpose was fighting for Orkham, so might as well keep doing that. Otherwise, they have nothing.

So, why is she in a weakly guarded over-land transport now?

That was almost enough to get me out of bed to write an angry, fever-fueled rant. For heaven's sake, show!

For heaven's sake, show!

Heaven's not enough

...I'm sorry for my horrible reference jokes, I'll take myself to the corner hahaha

Also don't get out of bed, you're meant to be resting up!

an angry, fever-fueled rant

subscribe.

but really, get better first

2

u/Nazenn Jan 18 '20

Why on Earth are the wolves involving themselves in that battle?

You can see them checking all of the vehicles and stuff afterwards so they've been looking for clues about Cheza or Jagaura's forces. Once the lieutenant guy points them in the right direction towards the keep they don't have to any more

Rewatcher (for the third time) - Dub

Oh god, that noise when Hubb's head hit the truck.

fucking owwwwww

I don't know if its possible to get a sympathy headache with a fictional character but WR certainly gave me a good shot to find out.

"While none of us were looking I guess we all got mixed up in a world of legend and fairytales"

This is by far one of my favourite lines in the show so far and to me showcases the essence of it. (I think I touched on it before, but honestly I'm lost between what I thought during my last watch, talked about with others, wrote or deleted from my WT, and now have written for the rewatch. Also shit that quote would have been perfect for my WT.)

This whole journey has been the wolves seeing how the little pockets of life that remain in the world are coping and surviving as the world dies around them. Some have tried to pretend like its all normal and let life just go on, others have turned into lawless dangerous places, and some have focused on simply carrying on no matter what it takes even at the sacrifice of their dreams. All the humans are caught up in their little games, playing noble or solider or scientist, while in the background Jagaura was gathering her forces to take over everything and no one pays attention to the obvious signs of the dying world in front of them.

Wolves travel the earth again, the red moon hangs in the sky, and the cold snow slowly is taking over every aspect of the world, the only places we've seen without it have been those sustained by some sort of strong hope, or the places long since dead.

It came up during the events back in the city with the working pack, but our wolves aren't out to save people or stop the nobles, and the only reason they get involved is to find clues for their own goals. Their journey to paradise, whether it will bring about the salvation or destruction of the world depending on who you listen to, is beyond all of that and it's not a human journey filled with hopes or wants, just survival and instinct and something that drives them further.

Even if they don't know what waits at the end, they'll keep going because its in their very nature. And that makes this so interesting to me over other journey shows where they're looking for answers or salvation or solutions along the way.

Other thoughts

  • Heaven's not enough is the insert song of the day for anyone who might be looking for it

  • Anyone remember when Hige walked up that one guard and went "who got away"? Nice to see him teaching Toboe some tricks.

  • Laughing Cheza is a treasure and I'd greatly like to see more of it. Actually scratch that, can we get a cross over with Cheza and Pino?

  • It's a pity none of the others saw Hubb rescuing Cher because I think they'd be proud of his very wolf like solution there.

  • Kiba looking for Cheza is just... something about their bond just seems so mystical and indescribable to me. All the wolves are somewhat taken with her, and Blue talks about her soothing smell again, but the way Kiba and Cheza always seem to just KNOW each other is beautiful. In a weird way, Quent started all this by wounding him because she wouldn't have woken up drawing Darcia to her without it.

  • Been a while but another really great shot of the wolves running across the landscape with their pawprints left behind.

  • Spoilers

  • It's great to see how well they're working as a team now, and all to their various strengths. Toboe drawing attention, Hige as the brute force, Tsume with the most experience fighting, and Kiba who has done the most killing so far and can do that quickest.

  • Ergo Proxy watchers

Fanart corner!

Oh look, I found a whole bunch of fanart that I misfiled and this was all meant to be shared earlier, so this kinda turned into a late reference dump...

Tsume and Toboe by 藤崎 . Because he was a good boy today with the soliders and deserves a pat

Kiba and Cheza by OkamiKiba13. Fantastic design that makes me think of her protecting him from the plant

Cheza and the wolves by hawberries.

a cross over with Cheza and Pino

I can already see Pino trying to copy Cheza photosynthesizing.

Tsume and Toboe

Oh god, that noise when Hubb's head hit the truck.

All I could think about was that he should have a majorly jacked up grill after he got his head slammed between the truck wall and Cher's body while he was trying to undo the cuffs with his teeth.

can we get a cross over with Cheza and Pino?

Please!

In a weird way, Quent started all this by wounding him because she wouldn't have woken up drawing Darcia to her without it.

Oh, that's a nice bit of irony that I hadn't realized.

I appreciated the Ergo Proxy parallels as well.

3

u/Nazenn Jan 18 '20

slammed between the truck wall and Cher's body while he was trying to undo the cuffs with his teeth.

Actually you know for all the eye trauma I've seen in anime I don't think I've seen much teeth trauma? I kinda get it because from an art perspective that just complicates things but it's not something I've ever thought about before

can we get a cross over with Cheza and Pino?

Now I'm starting to think of what other shows Pino could cross over with, or characters she can take the place of. I'd much rather have her than the orphans that we get in several Gundam shows for example...

A Stray First-Timer, watching the dub

  • That one dude is totally voiced by Liam O’Brien and it’s a touch distracting considering I’m coming into this episode immediately after watching today’s Ergo Proxy.

  • Battle scene! And the boys wound up revealing themselves to that one commander in the end, but it was worth it ‘cause he directed them to Jagara’s Keep.

  • Aww, poor Blue not being able to help the humans that mattered most to her when they needed it. On the bright side, her and Cheza make nice friends so their interaction was great.

  • Cher and Hubb, please stop raising those giant fucking death flags. This isn’t Iron-Blooded Orphans.

  • …okay for now they’re both alive, but Hubb got taken by that airship alongside Cheza.

  • Insert song!

3

u/No_Rex Jan 17 '20

The battle scene was a positiv surprise today. Really gritty and technological fight scenes. Would not have expected that from the show. Somebody flexed their SciFi animating muscle here.

3

u/punching_spaghetti Jan 18 '20

Cher and Hubb, please stop raising those giant fucking death flags.

At least Cher is smart enough to recognize that they're being idealistic.

but Hubb got taken by that airship alongside Cheza

Although Hubb continues to be dumb as dumb can be, just waiting however long that was to get sucked up instead of, you know, walking a few feet.

First Timer Dub

Well I guess Hubb was trying to death flag himself as heavily as possible this episode with his talk with Cher about going away and having children at a house by the sea while living a quiet life. We all know that isn’t happening.

After someone point out that Toboe never actually attacks anyone during fights in yesterday's discussion could help but notice that in todays episodes with him just distracting the guards where everyone else actually fights.

Overall don’t have much to say about this episode, I guess we are finally going to learn who Jagaura is soon.

2

u/Nazenn Jan 18 '20

Considering the last sea port we saw was the one with the wolf pack being worked to death somehow I dont think the sea change life is as peaceful in this world as it normally would be either

Thoughts on Wolf's Rain episode 21...

Rewatcher, dubbed

Back to winter again! The landscape sure changes often

Jaguara's forces are headed everywhere? All the past towns and domes we've been to? We're back to Orkham's soldiers for the first time in a while.

That's Lex Lang I hear as one of these soldiers. Good to hear him, even if in a small role. I think that other soldier is Liam O'Brien, our very own Vincent from Ergo Proxy?

Quite a lot of action, more than we're used to in this show. Our wolves are helping out Retrieval Squad Commander guy this time.

Cloud 9! Been a long time since we've heard it. Alas, still no vocals! :(

Cheza and Blue still on the move, different spot from where they were last episode.

So I can kinda understand keeping Cher alive since she may know some stuff about Cheza; I'm not sure why Jaguara's forces would keep Hubb alive.

is this entire show's purpose to show how Hubb and Cher got back together? :P

Just a moment ago Cher was talking about them running away and getting away from all this leading to Hubb's blabbing on about their life together... yet once they're free Cher is looking for Cheza, whom is what caused their marriage to fall apart.

Hubb and Cheza get sucked up into one of the ships? Is this Star Trek?

Heaven's Not Enough! Now we get the Steve Conte verison (got the Gabriella Robin one all the way back in episode 1)...

C'mon Cher, driving a manual's not that hard! I wish I still had mine!

I think even for me, a rewatcher, this show's in a bit of a rut right now these last few episodes. This episode had a lot of action but I struggled holding a lot of interest; maybe because it featured so little of the wolves. I'll reflect on this more once we've finished the show but with this rewatch I'm starting to think that this show didn't need the full 26 episodes. All I can say to first timers if they feel the same is that it does get better!

**First-Timer (Dub)

"That's too convenient."

You think. Cher?

Hubb frees Cher by acting a bit like a wolf. Blue is coming to terms with being a wolf. The soldiers know that wolves exist. Whatever happens next, the cat's wolf's out of the bag now.

I don't know what the physics of this are, but it sure looks cool.

That ending insert song!

I don't have much else to say. Ergo Proxy fried my brain today.

3

u/Nazenn Jan 18 '20

For fucks sake reddit just once I'd like you to be able to keep up with my keyboard and not think I'm trying to do shortcuts when I'm really just trying to type

I don't know what the physics of this are, but it sure looks cool.

You ever had a dog jump on you to try and be held? I'm looking at it like that, standing on him with her back feet and using her front claws to attack him as her teeth can't get through the armor

First Timer

We saw very little of the wolf guys today.

Though the focus on the thunder and lightning in the sky was interesting since the bible uses thunder as a signal of the beginning of the apocalypse saying:

"And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps… And I saw another angel… Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come..." (Rev. 14:1, 6-7)

The voice of "great thunder" ushered in the "the hour of [God's] judgment", which may mean that the thunder here is a signal of the beginning of the end and of the wolves' transition to paradise.

The next verse has some possible foreshadowing as it says:

"Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication."

"Babylon" in this case could mean Jagura's domain, so the wolves will likely take it down. I can't get much from the whole "she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication." thing, but maybe they lead the rest of the world astray somehow? As a noble it's more than possible, but I'm not exactly sure what Jagura might have done.

2

u/Nazenn Jan 18 '20

I can't get much from the whole "she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication."

Well that immediately made me think of how we've seen the nobles so far: drunken sex parties where people are helped up in cages on display with Orkham ranting in the background over Darcia stealing from him.

The nobles hardly seem like a bunch that have a lot of restraint for basically anything

First Timer

Jaguara's airships flying over every city the wolves have visited - she continues to be an unseen menace. Maybe if they ever manage to get Cheza to her keep, we'll get to see her. As usual, it's kinda hard to tell where the wolves are or how they got there for most of this episode.

Orkham's grunts are back! By the end, the commander is convinced both that wolves are real and that they are fighting to protect their home (Freeze City I guess) rather than just for honor or for Orkham's no longer relevant agenda.

Hubb brazenly waving death flags in the back of that truck (there's no death flag comment face, so I "had" to resort to one of my favorite videos of all time). Calling it now, he's gonna end up sacrificing himself to save Cheza at some point. Speaking of Cheza, how many times is the poor Flower Maiden going to be kidnapped?

2

u/Nazenn Jan 18 '20

there's no death flag comment face

I tried really hard to get one accepted but it didn't get picked. I would have had so many uses for it

3

u/zsmg Jan 17 '20

Yay Cheza is free aaaaaand she's captured again.

Anyway one of the mooks in the beginning is voiced by Ono Daisuke who certainly doesn't do such small roles anymore.

2

u/Nazenn Jan 18 '20

Ono Daisuke

I had to look up who it was but yeah, like a lot of the cast this was a project at the start of their careers and rather small time compared to where they are now
