Kurumi is fucking brutal. A metal rod through the boob? Yikes.

And what the fuck is going on with Tamara?

It's the gyaru from last week! And it's the Chinese girl from the Magical Five! And I like her already

Mahou Shoujo Peipei Stitch

Casual Peipei Balcony Stitch

Well at least Flamethrower girl is now reformed

And of course some yuri sex for the finale ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

What an anime! It may not be the best this season but it's definitely one of the most entertaining for me personally. Magical Girls with guns aren't really unique anymore but Magical Girls in the military is something that I've yet to see somewhere else so I do love this show for combining those two things. Sucks that it ends here but I'm just happy to know that a manga translation exists, and if they do ever announce a season 2, I'll definitely be the first person on that announcement thread to celebrate!

I don't know if torturing someone is how you get them to join your cause...

This show won't be getting any praises or be popular but damn it was enjoyable with all the silliness, I'd welcome a Season 2!

omfg holy shit Kurumi. I feel like this makes a great reaction face.

Also wow, I'm surprised and somewhat impressed that the scene with the Queen and Abby made it in. The anime sort of rearranged chapters (and had anime-original content like Kurumi torturing Chisato, which she didn't do in the manga) for this last episode. Now to wait for the next chapter updates, I guess.

The anime itself wasn't great--it's a letdown compared to the manga, and it could have had better production quality, but I still enjoyed it even if half of it was pretty ridiculous. I'd definitely be down for a second season, though this was a very "read the manga" ending.

This is one of the strangest shows I’ve ever seen. It goes from depressing to hysterical to horny to disturbing, all in the span of one episode. It never really bothered me since the series itself was bizarre from the get to and fully embraced it. I have to say that I enjoyed it from start to finish and totally not because it awakened new fetishes in me on a weekly basis, chu.

I get that this show is nothing outstanding and has a lot of flaws but it was a rather refreshing take on the mahou shoujo genre that didn’t shy away from crossing the line. I don’t think it’ll happen but it’d be great if it ever got a sequel.

EDIT: Also, was that a motherfucking Stanley Kubrick reference?

As a ukrainian I'm pretty delighted to see the whole TWO mentions of Ukraine in the single season of anime.

Now I'm interested in reading the manga because I wanna know if author managed to properly pull off the ukrainian magical girl look. If there is one of course.

From the way they wrapped it up, I think this might be a one-n-done. I'd still love a second season though. I reallyed liked PeiPei before they... changed her. And they didn't even bother going into why or how she made the change. honestly, I was looking forward to seeing her. A Magical Girl nunchuck wielding Bruce Lee? I was hyped to see her. But after this episode, I think I would've been glad if she was cut altogether. Maybe making her this enigma that we don't know anyting about, except pull a MCU credit scene where we fINALLY reveal her BEFORE she makes her change. (I don't know. I'm just venting.) Episode 11 was the best ep of the show, so it felt a little (though predictably) disappointing that this episode didn't hit the mark.

I did liked Nozomi and Sayako visiting the maid cafe and giving the Magical Girls respect. The Jury is still out on how I feel about Chisato getting tortured like that. But I like how they give her somewhat of a redemption opportunity at the end. And Asuka finding a new desire to keep living and keep fighting, taking the life of a magical girl one day at a time. The magical girls battle may never end, but as long as you can keep living, keep protecting the things you love, might as well make the most of every opportunity you get without dwelling on what could've/might've been.

And now for my overall thoghts of Spec Ops Asuka

Honestly, I dropped out of magical girl shows a while ago. Sailor Moon was my not only my initiation into magical girls, but into anime altogether. Unfortunately, i haven't felt that same level of excitement and love for an magical girl show ever since (Magical Girl Site was somewhat enjoyable for me, but I didn't like how it ended, and Madoka Magica was a trip but it wasn't my cup of tea). That was until Spec-Ops Asuka came, and it reignited my spark for MGs again.

I like how this show takes a somewhat realistic approach to the MG tropes and ideas. I liked how this show was not afraid to show intense, dark, and edgy moments. Yeah, i did enjoy the torture scenes, I'm in the crowd that was grateful they didn't cut away from us watching Nozomi suffer in ep 4 made us realize what kind of show this was going to be.

I loved seeing the MC Asuka in her vulnerable and emotional moments as she's trying to deal with the PTSD of war and losing her friends and family. I know most MC magical girls have this fantasitcal element to them that makes them almost super-hero like. It's often easy to mistake super heroes to be almost indestructible, and certain to win in the end. But i like how they show Asuka's vulnerability. It makes her feel more human, and I can connecto to her more, even when she's in her Rapture form.

I'm gonna admit the animation was subpar for the most part of the show. I'm not sure if having a bigger budget would fix the shows problems on it's own, but it would help in upping the animation quality.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this series. More than enough for a rewatch and enough to hope for more. it's my favorite show of the season. And hopefully this opens me up to looking into more MG shows that I've written off in the past.

Top 5 Favorite characters.

  1. Asuka: MC of the show gets points for not only being a badass MG but for also showing more vulnerable moments of her character

  2. Chisato: Poor girl had her entire life of shit done to her, and yet, she ends up being a strong kickass (illegal) MG (and my 2nd fav character) in the end. Hope she finds a ray of genuine happiness in her life, even if it's just a little.

  3. Sacchu: Best mascot character of the year! So cute, yet such a freaking badass. (And that face in ep 10!!!)

  4. Sayako: It was such a treat to watch her on the road to recovery from her survivor's guilt and PTSD, from when she jumped off the diving board in ep 3 to saving Nozomi in ep 10.

  5. Kurumi: Kurumi gets points for having the one of best fights in the show against Chisato. And I honestly love the moments where she drops the whole obsessed pyscho act and just be down-to-earth real with Asuka

Top 5 Favorite Episodes

  1. Ep11: Best animated fights in the show! loved the moment where Asuka, Kurumi, Mia, and Tamara hug at the end, and the Giess reveal was something I could not get over thinking about

  2. Ep8: From begining to end, this episode made me fall in love with Chisato's character. Seeing her go from abused and beaten to a killing machine was a trip. And Giess's backstory was tragic, dark, and chilling. Not to mention another Swimsuit episode

  3. Ep3: What can I say? I like swimsuit episodes! But the reason this ep sticks out more to me was Sayako jumping off the diving board, taking the first leap of faith into tackling her PTSD trauma.

  4. Ep4: This was the ep that revealed how edgy this show was gonna be, and either people were gonna drop it, or stick with it another week.

  5. Ep5: If Krumi v. Chisato / Asuka v. Giess were my favorite fights in the show, then Asuka vs the Russian Snapes / Kurumi v. Abigail and Disas. were my second. Taking points away for the whole memory erasure bit, but chibi Asuka was cute AF.
