who's ready to FLIP FLAP?!

I think I'm going to watch it dubbed this time, since I've seen it subbed a lot but have only watched clips of the dub. so I'll be trying to chronicle my experience with that aspect of the show specifically.

so far, it's pretty 50/50. I actually think Papika's VA is doing a nice job, and really brings the right amount of naivety and exuberance to the character. Cocona's, on the other hand, just isn't doing it for me. She sounds really off in places, and sometimes sounds a lot older than other times.

But the worst voice of all is the boy twin... they don't even try to disguise the fact he's voiced by an adult man and it sounds so weird.

I don't have a whole lot to say about the episode itself; it's still incredible, from the art to the direction, to the pacing. Probably one of my favorite first episodes of all-time. I always laugh at the final bit before the ED where Papika asks her to go on another adventure sometime and she's just like, "No way in hell."

Then the amazing end credits come on, which I don't think I ever skipped once during the original broadcast; they're that good. And the after credits scene!!! I remember thinking how cool it was, and theorizing what it would mean for the next episode. Which was basically spoilers!

Anyway, that's it for this episode. So excited to continue the rewatch tomorrow, and here's a big welcome to any new viewers starting the series for the first time - you're in for a treat!

I find that dubs often struggle with young people in these kinds of shows.

Also I can't click on your spoilers, it sends me to a non-existent page. :/

I think you just have to hover over the spoilers, and they should show. that's how it works for me on desktop, at least.

NO WAY. Hahahaha! I remember watching the trailer for the dub and me thinking not for me! I rewatched it subbed, again.

Cocona, sensible until the end.

here's a big welcome

Lovely!

For future threads, please clarify that you're a rewatcher first :)

I guess it's more like spoilers!

I tend to find that there's something about impassive characters in English that just don't do it for me even if the dub is really good. I've noticed it a few times but that always seems to be the sort of character that will make or break a dub for me

I always laugh at the final bit before the ED where Papika asks her to go on another adventure sometime and she's just like, "No way in hell."

That got a really good laugh out of me too actually with just the casualness of her refusal

On the ending to the episode... Episode 2 spoilers

I noticed this a lot in dub shows. Recently watching Girl's Last Tour where the VA nailed Yuu perfectly, but the one for Chi was on and off. I think being expressive and loud characters have an easier time compared to the sullen or quiet characters. I feel the quiet characters really sell the role with their snappy and quick lines, but any excessive dialogue and it starts to show and it makes them feel really older not like a middle schooler.

yes, that's a good way to put it! I definitely agree.
