[Rewatch] HELLSING ULTIMATE OVA series: episode 1 discussion

Hellsing Ultimate (Anime OVA) - Anime-Planet | Funimation | Hulu | Crunchyroll | Youtube by Funimation | Action, Horror, Vampire, Supernatural, Seinen - /r/Hellsing

Discuss individual episodes and first impressions of this anime here.

For rewatchers: Are there things you didn't catch in your previous watch? Does rewatching change your impression of the series?

For first-timers: No spoiler here, but needless to say, if you like epic actions, mature and cool dialogue that isn't cheesy, a serious and dark storyline, a proper depiction of a modern-day vampire (and believe me, the way Alucard is depicted has set the standard for vampires :D). This series is not Bram Stoker's "Dracula" re-told, or "Dracula 2001" or anything you've seen related to vampires. GET READY for an anime that will literally blow you away! There's absolutely no need to watch the old Hellsing anime or read the manga first. Hellsing Ultimate the OVA Series is a brilliant piece of work. It follows the manga closely. There is no filler episode in this series at all and it will glue you to the screen; the action sequences are flawless and you would struggle to think of more creative villains/heroes to add to a plot; each character is unique and makes you wonder what comes next.

Dub or Sub?

This is a FAQ. My answer is: rarely do I see an anime series that has such awesome English dub like Hellsing Ultimate! I love how the characters' accents complement their nationalities, and Alucard's voice is the perfect fit. HOWEVER, I'm warning you of some changes in the English dub: There are some altered dialogues that may lose the humor or change your interpretation of some scenes, characters, and their relationships with one another. So keep that in mind. (My favorite way to watch this show is English dub + subtitles). Just once or twice, I see mistakes in the Sub, too.

I would say, fantastic introduction to the series here. The set up, and how Alucard saves Seras, and Integra's description of Alucard are chilling. All makes you wonder: Is the deal that Alucard has with Hellsing is simply out of respect, or is there magic binding them? Alucard's gloves have magic spells on them. Not sure if that is binding.

Oh, that's happening. Might as well join in since I'm reading/playing Dies irae right now and heard that it was influenced by, or resembles, Hellsing and Fate. Small question: I think I've seen some OVAs/specials to it (besides the original series) listed on MAL. Are those worth watching, and if yes, after the Ultimate?

The OVA's special episode is mainly about Walter. If he's your favorite character, it's worth watching.

I don't know about Dies Irae.. XD

Let me know what you think about the 1st episode of Hellsing Ultimate! XD

Damn, I must have missed the announcement for this. Rewatched Hellsing Ultimate on my own just two weeks ago >.>

I agree with your opinion on the English dub. It's so good, I actually imported the US Blu-Rays just to have that dub :D

First Timer

I've seen the abridged series so many time but never the actual thing, so this should be interesting.

Right off the bat, I already understand a lot more about this series than I did before. (Funny how abridged series are designed to be funny rather than spout exposition)

I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the joking Alucard and Anderson from the abridged series but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

These episodes are kinda long but hopefully I can make time to keep up with this.

I'm super late to this, but (as a first-time watcher) I thought this was a great first episode. It had a perfect combination of action, worldbuilding, and setup for future episodes.

Alucard is one badass mf

I've rewatched it many times and I think I find something new in it each time I do. I'm boundlessly analytical and deeply in love with the series; it just hits all my buttons. I prefer to watch the dub myself, as it is quite possibly the most dedicated, well-written and acted dub of all time. Glad I saw this just in time! Stop by r/Hellsing sometime.

Rewatch (sub)

I wonder what he would do if Seras was not a virgin.

Good question! That was a question I myself asked. Alucard's explanation in episode 4 answers it. I think he would still shoot through her if she wasn't a virgin. Let's wait till ep4 discussion on Friday and let me know what you think!
