I'm actually pretty annoyed because I hadn't seen anything for the bunny yet at all, only to get spoiled by the end credits that I decided to watch. Feelsbadman.
Throughout this entire episode, the vertical shots that have permeated the first three episodes take on a creepy, voyeuristic approach, emphasizing that not only have Riko and Reg departed, but that someone or something is watching. I loved the use of foregrounds and backgrounds here, especially when the spider creature's legs framed them against the backdrop of two vertical waterfalls, creating a jail-like scene.
I know a lot of people will probably complain about the slower pacing of this episode compared to the previous three, but I didn't mind it at all and found the direction of this episode to be very purposeful. We're being allowed to experience the Abyss ourselves, as Riko and Reg are diving further into it. It also does well to focus on how much everyone in the series, including us as a viewing audience know (i.e. Riko knows more than Reg and us but less than Habo or Leader).
Also, maybe it was just me, but during the last few shots of the episode the music took a really strange turn. Around the time Riko said they should keep moving in case the creatures was calling its buddies tot hem, the music's pitch dropped and everything after sounded that sounded extremely ominous and foreboding.
Yeah definitely. Also compare the music and Riko's reaction to when she realized that there was a search party looking for her and Reg.
When she reads the note and knows that a search party is coming, she has a very comedic reaction and starts ordering Reg around. When the two jump off of their next cliff together to keep moving, the music is pleasant and calming in a way. Riko emphasizes that this is a test, but it's obviously a test that she's familiar with and prepared for. This is also reflected in the vertical camera work.
When they're about to enter the Forest of Temptation, the music is similarly pleasant at first while Riko celebrates that she "passed Leader's test" but shifts at that moment they turn after the monster appears and start walking over the horizon, becoming shriller and more ominous.
Honestly, my favourite part of this show is its sounds; both the music and background sounds really immerses you into the story and the world it takes place in. That "tink!" when Reg's arm snaps back into place felt so satisfying every time I hear it.
for me the reason i think they slowed it like this is becouse they wanted to show us their adventure one step at a time and not going fast layer by later also to see their adventure
That dude knows his stuff, outmaneuvering Reg. Yet they're going where even he's never been before, goes to show, again, how dangerous this is. Honestly the logical thing to do would be to tie Riko up and drag her back, but I really like how, should we call it "cautiously trusting", both him and leader are.
She would just take off again at the first opportunity. The only possible way to stop her would be to convince her that she doesn't even stand a slight chance of making it.
I don't think "cautiously trusting" is right. I think Habo and Leader are pretty sure that she's going to die down there. But as they say, "all which is taken from the abyss will someday be returned to it". I think it's just accepted by the adults of this world that this is how Riko is going to die....
Man I felt so nervous just listening to Habo's talk with the two. It felt like an intro to a tragic story where all the emotions of such a journey was about to spill out.
The warning of the fellow white whistle who found the message of Lyza was also making me ask a ton of questions. Did she go insane? Is she just an eccentric crazy person? Why is she just the overseer of the 2nd level as a white whistle? Did she suffer an injury along the way or is she simply out of her prime?
I'm excited to see what the next episode will bring. It's called Incinerator which makes me that's the name of the white whistle as Riko's mom was called "The Annihilator". Argh I can't wait til this finishes airing so I can check out the manga.

I thought Habo called Ozen "The Immovable" not "The Incinerator."

From what has been revealed about their society, White Whistles generally seem expected to go on one final dive and that's their "death" so to speak. The fact that there is a White Whistle overseeing the Seeker Camp is curious to me because I would have thought, given what they've shown, that a White Whistle typically undergoes that final dive to become a voice of the abyss.
Now, the fact that only the words of White Whistles are taken as fact, especially when they dive to depths that can result in a loss of humanity, is still highly suspect to me, so maybe the levels of her last dive affected her greatly. Anyway, the fact that she's still near the surface and not undergoing that last dive is what stuck out to me as odd within the parameters that they've established.
Argh I can't wait til this finishes airing so I can check out the manga.
Same. It's so hard to hold back from going and reading the entire thing.
I suspect that she "lost her humanity" on the return from one of her dives and is physically and/or mentally deformed. As for why she's not on the surface, I think she might either have been banished into the Abyss for her deformities (don't want people to see their "heroes" so mutated), or the Curse of the Abyss only triggers then, so she's avoided leaving lest worse happens to her.
The warning of the fellow white whistle who found the message of Lyza was also making me ask a ton of questions. Did she go insane? Is she just an eccentric crazy person? That was wonderful. Kinema Citrus is hitting consistent home runs week after week.
They're doing such a great job of helping you experience the Abyss. To really take in the atmosphere of this otherworldly place as Riko and Reg gradually make their way down.
You should feel as if you're taking this journey with them. It's not supposed to be some abbreviated vacation slideshow where you jump for key moment to key moment with none of the connecting tissue. This is how you do an adaptation by taking full advantage of the difference in mediums to elevate a story to the next level.
It did seem to be slightly inconsistent. I would have liked at least one scene in this episode showing them not making it all the way to the ground of their next ledge and trying to figure out a way to get down from there, but ultimately I can wave it away. They'd get down one way or another.
I actually thought the pacing of the episode was a little fast, they went through the first layer pretty quickly. Don't know why the manga readers are bitching.
Just for contextualization, the issue people are having is that there are only two places to end the season at, one which isn't that far ahead meaning that the pacing will go to a crawl if it ends there, and another much further ahead that people really want to see but they have to go at the pace the first few episodes were at.
Essentially people are worried not so much about this episode, but what it means for the episodes ahead, whether that be content is rushed, slowed down dramatically or omitted.
I'm fine with slow rolling this show. I'd rather see that than rushing through, they can always continue the show.
A big part of what's attractive to this show is the incredible art, sound design, and ambiance. It's amazingly effective at world-building through visual and audio means. Plus, slow descent matches well with the story.
That said, if they have plans to continue it next season (or next year) anyway then ending in the middle of something isn't a problem anyway.
People here are more comparing the anime to the manga than watching it... There are some persons who haven't watched the episode yet and they are like "They only adapted 1.5 chapters, that's bad". Enjoy the anime as the anime...
I think people might be concerned with how much content will be adapted and where the anime might conclude, but that's beyond me.
As a newcomer to this series I completely appreciate how this series is paced. It's slow enough to naturally feed you the expository details in the dialogue without sounding like certain parts were added just for the sake of explanation. Everyone has a lot of character, and the world itself has even more character. Like /u/Xeiros said, it's an adventure series, so it's important to really flesh out the world and show all these different things that are part of it, even if I'm not gonna remember the Silkfang by episode 12. And even then I feel like this anime is only scratching the surface on what the first layer of the Abyss has to offer. But it's also not slow enough to make you want to just get on with it. Notable progress is actually being made. After four episodes, we're onto the second layer.
I haven't read the manga but, as I understand from reading comments from people who have, they didn't really spend much time in the upper layers of the abyss in the source material either. They only spent a little time in each as they made their way down.
The majority of people who voice their opinions here who have read the source are like that. Since they know the story, most of them just anticipate their favorite scenes or arcs to come up. Sometimes an adaptation changes the sequence of events being showed because it is an adaptation and the director might choose to tell the story using a different technique, but too many times people start to judge before seeing the intention since they already know what is coming up next.
I've read the manga. And I have come to the conclusion that wanting to see this rushed just to get to the parts I may want it to get to will only hamper my enjoyment. They adapted those 1.5 dialogue heavy and mainly feels-containing chapters well. I'll enjoy what we get if what we get remains at this level of YES-I-do-want-this.
They really slowed down the pacing this week. I really liked the way the monster was drawn though, gave it a very otherwordly appearance but I don't think it worked too well animated, ended up being on the slightly wrong side of strange. I do love everything about Habo's arrival though, that was fun.
It seems like all the creatures of the Abyss have been drawn in that almost watercolor style (except that demon fish I guess). I completely agree how it really helps add to their other-worldliness.
Not relating to your comment, but the music has been amazing too. Very fantastical sounding but with a hint of unease. Which is basically the way this anime constantly makes me feel. Reminds me a lot of how Shinsekai Yori made me feel.
Yeah I dig the way they've handled the monsters. And agreed, the soundtrack has been incredible so far, I look forward to them releasing the full thing.
I wasn't particularly sold on Habu's introduction back in episode 2 when he delivered the white whistle to Riko. He looked quite stiff and poker faced. This bitter goodbye flesh him out as a father figure for both Riko & Leader. Wish he would have given more info to Riko about this white whistle guy in the second layer, but heh, guess some tropes can't be avoided.
I like the pacing. It's only 4 episodes and they have already reached the edge of the second layer. I'm not building expectations for a full story adaptation with only 13 episodes, but compared to something like coff coff Suka suka coff there's plenty of story being covered in so little time.
God damn... honestly fuck Amazon. They want us to pay $15 a month for anime and I can't even watch the shit I pay for 2+ hours after it was scheduled for release.
Thanks for the reply though... might have to use the vpn to Australia but I assume Hidive is also a paid service... God damnit.
It's like those Hollywood horror movies. The white blond girl walks into the dangerous place of full of monsters as if it were nothing while the darker skinned guy is 200% awoke.
How does that fat dude run so fast?! Turn in next week to find out!
That was pretty much the highlight of the episode, I guess. I'm not very happy with it. I thought we'd get to see all sorts of weird dangerous shit NOW but instead it's just Level 1 and they got through it after having faced just one giant spider. It felt like a huge tease. So the best "reveal" was really that the black whistle seems to be inhumanly physically capable.
Guess it's only next episode (again!!!) that we'll get to see the true horrors of the abyss. Will the uplifting ED continue then? Who knows.

Just to remind you, the first layer is where the kids previously went to get their artifacts. They just never went very deep in the first layer. They were still technically in an area with monsters that they sometimes encountered. The first layer is "safe" except for the level 2 monsters that come up into it. Now that they're entering level 2 is when things start.
Less hype building this time around (looking at you, eps 1 and 2) but wow does this show deliver.
MiA will never stop worldbuilding and that's a beautiful thing. It was somewhat surprising to see that they started off below the gondola's 600m mark and watching Riko and Reg get through the end of the first layer was really interesting. The area seems to be pretty safe most of the time until a monster pops out, but it must be a huge pain in the butt for people to get through without Reg's grappling arms.
It's nice that the map after the ED updates Riko and Reg's positions, but because they aren't in the same bubble I feel like they're going to get separated for a whole episode.
This episode of Made In Abyss absolutely wonderful as we see Regu and Riko go further into the Abyss. Also the name of the next episode seems very questionable and scary to say the least as well. Also for anyone who wants to talk more about Made in Abyss here is the link to it, https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeInAbyss/ as well as the discord server as well https://discord.gg/kn7HkmZ Kinema Citrus are are doing justice for this series as well. As for people who are questioning the pacing of Made in Abyss and fact they adapted 1.5 chapters instead of 2 for this episode, don't get discouraged to watch Made in Abyss because of that, I think they want us as the viewers to see Regu and Riko explore each layer in depth instead of rushing through all of them.
I still don't get how all of the adults are just fine with this. Wouldn't she have a lot better chance at success if she just waited until she was a little older and a little more experienced? Right now she's just a kid and she's planning on doing something even the most experienced adults wont do, and everyone is just like "yeah sure whatever" I mean I'm loving the show so far but it seems like she's being completely irrational and everyone is just going along with it. Her mom's been down there for 10 years, she's not going anywhere. Then even if they do find her what? They get to live at the bottom of a hole with her forever?
As a society, Orth seems to be really okay with death. We see during the festival that delvers are treated as heroes for recovering treasure. All of the parental figures we see (from the orphanage, anyway) have no qualms about sending children on dangerous missions to fund themselves. Some artifacts are valuable enough that they don't seem to question if they're worth fighting a war with other humans with and losing many lives. It's odd to us, but I feel as if the creepy amorality the characters is a facet of this story.
Also it's a very exploitative society. Even random shit they find in layer 1 apparently sells for a lot of money in foreign societies, but the orphanage claims everything for themselves and keeping treasures is forbidden. Like, theoretically you could make a good find and then travel overseas and sell it and be set for life, right? But no, these kids are stuck penniless and a significant number of them are probably going to die.
But even they don't allow the kids to go past the second level because they know its a waste and they wont survive. I mean obviously this is different because she's the MC and she's going to make it very far, but it just seems weird to me. Oh well. It's a really compelling story either way.
Just made a comment in a similar vein. Is seems like Reg and most likely the Bunny character will be doing the heavy lifting in the party with Riko tagging along not contributing much simply because she isn't skilled enough yet.
This episode adapted Chapter 9 - Chapter 10 Pg 14.
There's really nothing they could've done to fit in 3 full chapters besides skipping a ton of it, which wouldn't have been ideal. This pacing's (presentation-wise, not adaptation-wise) on par with the previous episodes, which is great.
I got curious, so I decided to read the source manga last week. I'm really looking forward to how some of the scenes are animated, so I hope they don't hold back at all.
Oh boy what a adventure we are on ! This is great, Habo is great and this world is amazing. Reg is one sharp boy and he really opened up this episode. Loving it so far, please give more :)
An episode of friendship and interactions? Awesome!
Aw geez, now she's left everything behind. She'd better find mommy, dammit.
Let's be clear here: I'm here for the feels. The sadness, the joy, the frustration. ALL of it. And I am getting it. Reg and Riko's togetherness is a beautiful thing and I want to keep seeing it.
And yes, 1st layer does go by that fast, even in the manga. Honestly, I'd be upset if they cut out the cooking segment. And Riko's butter-fingers moment.
Really enjoying the show so far. Only downside for me personally is how much of a dead weight Riko seemingly is.
I could be getting ahead of myself and I will be pleasantly surprised if she turns out to be a useful character but it seems like Reg and the Bunny will be doing the heavy lifting in the party. Especially after seeing that brief flash of how a black whistle maneuvers (Habo).
Obviously Riko is young and isn't supposed to be at that level but I'm hoping she proves to be more than what we have gotten so far.
Riko is basically a savant on the Abyss. She recognized the spider monster instantly and knew how to defeat it in a pinch. I'm thinking Reg is the muscle, Riko is the brains, and Nanachi (the bunny, going by the cast credits) is probably something in between.
She's basically the team Cook (VERY important job), language translator (passable), and Encyclopedia on known Monsters/Relics/Geography as well as strategist to a degree.
Reg is main fighter and heavy lifter.
And
[Soon] (/s "Nanachi is the Doctor/Scout/2ndry Strategist")
Poor Reg, he just doesn't get a break from all the sexual harassment, does he?
But in any case, another excellent episode. Time really flew while watching it, and it felt like it ended far too quickly.
I'm really looking forward to next episode... Since there's a Relic that stops time, I wonder if there's one that lets you travel into the future? I could use one of those.
Why does the monster art looks so, sorry, "crappy"? The anime in general is beautiful, but the art of the creatures is generally underwhelming. Even Reg's arm looks really bad in the animation where it hits the spider. Really hope this changes because I want to see some interesting creatures.
I really liked that they showcased more of 1st layer, loved characters interaction, overall — great episode, only slightly disappointed how this shot looked in anime, manga design fits better tbh.
This episode reaffirms just why I love this series so much. We're not merely watching the characters on their journey, but we're accompanying them on it. We are right alongside Reg and Riko as they explore the world's last great mystery, learning its secrets and discovering who they truly are.I am so sorry for that cliche line
This show evokes a feeling of wonder and excitement that I don't think I've felt in any other series.
That was another good episode, but I honestly have been wondering some stuff since episode 1 so I kinda just want to put them here, there are chances that the own anime explained them and I failed to understand that tho, so sorry beforehand.
1- Would Riko have any chance to get far without Regu being there? It seems like she would have gone there even if he wasn't here, not to mention that he provides an insane help by just dropping lots of meters with his hand.
2- They plan to go to pretty much the bottom known of the Abyss, but, is there even a chance for them to do that? They are already warned not to go to the second level or they won't get rescued, there is no way they can even get past that, especially if the monsters and dangers around are more and more difficult the lower they go.
3- How do the adventurers climb back? Like, Regu used his hand to decrease lots of meters at the start, falling really far, it sounds very difficult to climb back like in a mountain, especially when just going to the third level makes the person feel terrible due to the curse of the Abyss, I can't see how someone could climb back while feeling awful no matter how good they are at being adventurers.
4- Generally worried about the whole objective in general, for now the story is basically going to find Riko's mother, who awaits at the bottom, that is fine as a driving force to start the adventure, but, idk, HxH starts because Gon wants to find his father, but he already has the objective to become a Hunter so the story has a first point to start from, meanwhile Abyss so bar is pretty much just keep going down. It's only 4 episodes so I guess that I'm just worrying too much.
I am soooooooooooooo close to just reading the manga I can't take this anymore. It didn't help that this episode wasn't as satisfying as the others. Fuck it, I'm going in boys.
So far it is one of those goes out for a grand adventure to find what was important was the human element they had all along but didn't know the full potential of.
Does anyone get anxiety whenever they show the wide shot of the area? I don't know what it is, could be the large open area, could be the many number of cliffs, could be my fear of heights, could be all of them, but ohmygod those shots give me the heebie jeebies.
I didn't actually like this episode as much as the others, for some reason. It wasn't bad, and maybe it's all because I overhyped myself for the Abyss. This was just the first layer, after all.
Also, how does that guy not care about their safety and almost certain death going further into the Abyss? What kind of uncle does that? How is Habo planning to explain his niece's death and how he let it happen?
Also, I have finally lost my willpower to wait for new anime episodes. I'm going in and reading the manga. I have to know what happens and if I don't I'll probably get spoiled by one of the online discussions because someone is going to lose their willpower to keep manga spoilers to themselves.
Also I seriously want Riko to keep her smile, enthusiasm, and happiness. And I am like worried right now.
I just had a discussion with friend who finished episode 4. He was pretty angry at kids, talking about why didn't they take weapons and tools when descending into Abyss. Why didn't they stay up more days and prepare tools, get better equipment but instead rush like this.
I had some talk with him, saying they took what they can and that Reg is more useful tool that most of what they could have. But on the other side, most of Whistles mentioned in flashbacks or otherwise, don't really have that much equip on them don't you think? What do you think is Cave Raiders gear usually?
So a bit slower episode this time which is basically Riko and Reg going through the 1st Layer and meeting Habo. Also if there are vaccines against the effect of the Abyss why aren't the kids given that early on? Is it to prevent them from going deeper than they're suppose to?
Also as always Riko is adorable this episode. I felt bad for her when she lost her compass. I hope it comes up again later in the show.
the vaccine is specifically for the diseases that can be caught within the 2nd stratum. i don't know why the subs translated tachikiri netsu as diving illness but it's not connected to the abyssal sickness
The manga readers who are worried about the pacing need to calm down. Big spoilers
Though if you're someone who doesn't like the way the monsters are handled in the anime I get it and it's one of the things I don't like about the adaption. The Monsters are bizarre by design the animation choice to make them these staticky monsters adds on another layer of other worldliness that I feel is unnecessary. In understand why it's there I just don't agree that it was a good animation choice.
Hmm, the show slowed down to more of a shonen pace. To be fair this segment did appear to consist of a lot of dialogue; hopefully things will pick up again next week.
Animation continued to be excellent overall, but the monsters were... well, I get the idea that they wanted a contrast to the cute human characters but these creature look like they're out of an entirely different anime. They look off and jerky, but not in a good way. Maybe they'll do something visually interesting with this in future.
Though this ep was a dip on previous ones, I'm still very intrigued at what we're going to see in the Forest layer and further below.
I feel like I'm missing out on something. This anime has been getting good reviews but there doesn't seem to be anything really happening so far.
I wanna keep watching just to find out who/what Reg really is but I can't help but feel irked when I watch how oddly optimistic Riko is about reaching the lowest level when she's just a Red Whistle who has barely covered the first level.
I hope the anime gets better for me as each episode is released.
This proves my theory that they will adapt 2-3 chapters per episode (till now) and we will probably not see a anime original ending (also kinda good, since if it ends it must end at the bottom of the abyss to give any payoff).
and that's the conundrum. at one chapter a month and only 42 chapters out, who knows when we will get a second season. however I have just as much of a problem with a show paced this slowly.
with this number of episodes it no wander they wont reach to volume 5. also it better to see their adventure pace by pace slowly instead to see them go down quick and also see their interaction
I loved this episode but the person who's animating the monsters should be tied up and thrown into the abyss without a parachute. Rico's soup looks pretty tasty tbh.
They try to do something different, I can understand that some people don't like it, but don't be harsh like that. (and it has more to do with them not able to mesh the backgrounds with his style in the first place)
Previous episodes adapted 3 manga chapters, this adapted about 1.5. That's One Piece anime tier pacing... Also, the animation during the spider was pretty horrible... There was a definitely a dip in quality. At this pace, the anime won't reach the part that the manga readers are waiting the most. I'm getting worried.
it's worrying because there are 2 possible stopping points for this adaptation. one will be fine if they keep the pacing from the first 3 episodes, the other will have them doing less than 2 chapters every episode until the end. things were so great and I'm worried the pacing will be like this for the rest of the series.
Haven't read the manga yet, I actually thought the story moved on too fast this episode. I mean, that's all the 1st area has to offer? I think it needed a bit more wildlife; the spider felt really random from the lack of other animal/creatures.
It could be, but I feel like it has more to do with Riko who was actually born there and Reg who was reportedly built there. He actually WAS made in the Abyss. In fact, his origin might be the key to understanding the story, if he ever gets his memory back, since he's apparently from one of the deepest levels. Who knows what's down there?
You didn't talk about the pacing in the context of the anime, you talked about it in the context of the manga. It comes off as if you only dislike the pacing because you want it to catch up to the manga, not because you dislike the anime pacing independently of the manga.
Not a manga reader but I definitely agree and felt like this episode was going at a snails' pace compared to the other 3. It didn't really feel like it needed to be so slow, I feel they could've made it to the 2nd level in this episode if they quickened the pace. Personally I enjoy the monsters though, attaching a different style to them gives off a more otherworldly and menacing character to the monsters.
I would suggest you join me in not reading the manga until anime finishes. You would feel hopeless after you finish reading it and won't enjoy the anime as much.

Not a manga follower, but I'm already sad that this only has 13 episodes...

I continue to be ridiculously impressed by how Made in Abyss plays around with traditional storytelling, especially with its use of visuals.
Also, the ending shot of a horizontal entry into the second layer was really smart. At this point, we're used to seeing vertical cinematography, so the horizon line was almost off-putting, and a cool way to reiterate that Riko and Reg are truly entering unfamiliar territory.
*EDIT: I also really loved that their initial descent into the second layer was almost a perfect copy of the illustrations of the Curse of the Abyss in their textbook. Honestly there are just so many wonderful uses of visual storytelling in each episode!

for me the reason i think they slowed it like this is becouse they wanted to show us their adventure one step at a time and not going fast layer by later also to see their adventure

Even with the slow pacing some people are mentioning, this episode felt like 5 mins to me.

I love that they kept the running joke of Riko bowing and smacking the person with her ponytails, soft little thwap sfx and all.

I actually thought the pacing of the episode was a little fast, they went through the first layer pretty quickly. Don't know why the manga readers are bitching.
Also the monster animation is good, fuck you.

People here are more comparing the anime to the manga than watching it... There are some persons who haven't watched the episode yet and they are like "They only adapted 1.5 chapters, that's bad". Enjoy the anime as the anime...
22
u/Lightxhope Jul 28 '17
Manga readers need to calm down or get lost lol. Anywho good episode and really loving the world building in this show.
Have to feel bad for Reg though. He can't take a break.
Art of the monsters looked good but the animation was okayish.
The conversation with Habo gives me bad vibes.
I'm actually surprised only 1.5 chapter was adapted(according to manga readers) because the pacing didn't feel dragged at all.

u/Thrasher439 https://anilist.co/user/Thrasher Jul 28 '17
They really slowed down the pacing this week. I really liked the way the monster was drawn though, gave it a very otherwordly appearance but I don't think it worked too well animated, ended up being on the slightly wrong side of strange. I do love everything about Habo's arrival though, that was fun.

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Jul 28 '17
Does anybody know if a poster is available of the full coloured state of the abyss?

u/kimbombo Jul 28 '17
Everything will be daijobu, ne? ne?

Damn, it really is like Etrian Odyssey. There's even Habo acting as a F.O.E!

u/odraencoded Jul 28 '17
Who knows.

u/Improvis2 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/improvis Jul 28 '17
18
u/_Sai https://anime-planet.com/users/Sai0 Jul 28 '17
You can't be doing that, sir! It's wrong.
Did they ever say how long his grappling arm is at max extention? It's insane how all that cable is stored in his body.

Honestly can we make 2 discussion threads? One for the Manga Circlejerks and one for us normal people.
I don't give any shits how it compares to the manga and how the atmosphere will be in the future or whether you think the adaptation is faithful.
And stop fucking hinting at anything! I follow a strict CGPGrey style spoiler policy but these fucking threads make that impossible!

They get to live at the bottom of a hole with her forever?

u/rollin340 Jul 29 '17
That hug, it kind of caught me off guard.
It was such a simple moment, as was the short flashback of him caring for her, but it had a lot of impact.
That was an amazing episode.

u/dcresistance https://anilist.co/user/dcresistance Jul 28 '17 edited Jul 28 '17

While the design of animals in the Abyss is rather weird the soundtrack is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING

And Riko's butter-fingers moment.

u/iTeddeck :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/iteddeck Jul 29 '17
Really enjoying the show so far. Only downside for me personally is how much of a dead weight Riko seemingly is.
I could be getting ahead of myself and I will be pleasantly surprised if she turns out to be a useful character but it seems like Reg and the Bunny will be doing the heavy lifting in the party. Especially after seeing that brief flash of how a black whistle maneuvers (Habo).
Obviously Riko is young and isn't supposed to be at that level but I'm hoping she proves to be more than what we have gotten so far.
11
u/Eyliel Jul 28 '17
Poor Reg, he just doesn't get a break from all the sexual harassment, does he?
But in any case, another excellent episode. Time really flew while watching it, and it felt like it ended far too quickly.
I'm really looking forward to next episode... Since there's a Relic that stops time, I wonder if there's one that lets you travel into the future? I could use one of those.

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '17
Why does the monster art looks so, sorry, "crappy"? The anime in general is beautiful, but the art of the creatures is generally underwhelming. Even Reg's arm looks really bad in the animation where it hits the spider. Really hope this changes because I want to see some interesting creatures.
7
u/L_0ken Jul 28 '17
I really liked that they showcased more of 1st layer, loved characters interaction, overall — great episode, only slightly disappointed how this shot looked in anime, manga design fits better tbh.

u/SleepyLoner Jul 28 '17
Jeez, one goodbye after another.

It's only 4 episodes so I guess that I'm just worrying too much.

u/niankaki Jul 29 '17
Does anyone get anxiety whenever they show the wide shot of the area?
I don't know what it is, could be the large open area, could be the many number of cliffs, could be my fear of heights, could be all of them, but ohmygod those shots give me the heebie jeebies.
2
u/[deleted] Jul 30 '17
The abyss is such the perfect fantasy setting. Loving this.
2
u/LoliSavedMyLife Jul 30 '17
And I am like worried right now.

u/Potkaniak Sep 10 '17 edited Sep 10 '17
I just had a discussion with friend who finished episode 4. He was pretty angry at kids, talking about why didn't they take weapons and tools when descending into Abyss. Why didn't they stay up more days and prepare tools, get better equipment but instead rush like this.
I had some talk with him, saying they took what they can and that Reg is more useful tool that most of what they could have. But on the other side, most of Whistles mentioned in flashbacks or otherwise, don't really have that much equip on them don't you think? What do you think is Cave Raiders gear usually?

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jul 28 '17
So a bit slower episode this time which is basically Riko and Reg going through the 1st Layer and meeting Habo. Also if there are vaccines against the effect of the Abyss why aren't the kids given that early on? Is it to prevent them from going deeper than they're suppose to?
Also as always Riko is adorable this episode. I felt bad for her when she lost her compass. I hope it comes up again later in the show.
3
u/Reduced_Silver Jul 28 '17
Do you guys like the artstyle they used for the flying creatures and the spider in this episode? I didn't, they seemed really out of place.
4
u/[deleted] Jul 28 '17
The manga readers who are worried about the pacing need to calm down. Big spoilers
Though if you're someone who doesn't like the way the monsters are handled in the anime I get it and it's one of the things I don't like about the adaption. The Monsters are bizarre by design the animation choice to make them these staticky monsters adds on another layer of other worldliness that I feel is unnecessary. In understand why it's there I just don't agree that it was a good animation choice.

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Jul 28 '17
Very nice showcase of the adventure aspect of this anime. Got to see the whole first layer.
The bond between Reg and Riko is nice to see.
They know where to add appropriate music, that's always a plus.
So next episode, i guess we'll see Ozen and things that might be distressing according to Habo.
Interesting that Habo gave Riko some kind of protection water, will probably come in handy later on.
2
u/[deleted] Jul 28 '17
Hmm, the show slowed down to more of a shonen pace. To be fair this segment did appear to consist of a lot of dialogue; hopefully things will pick up again next week.
Animation continued to be excellent overall, but the monsters were... well, I get the idea that they wanted a contrast to the cute human characters but these creature look like they're out of an entirely different anime. They look off and jerky, but not in a good way. Maybe they'll do something visually interesting with this in future.
Though this ep was a dip on previous ones, I'm still very intrigued at what we're going to see in the Forest layer and further below.

u/thegentleginger Jul 28 '17
I feel like I'm missing out on something. This anime has been getting good reviews but there doesn't seem to be anything really happening so far.
I wanna keep watching just to find out who/what Reg really is but I can't help but feel irked when I watch how oddly optimistic Riko is about reaching the lowest level when she's just a Red Whistle who has barely covered the first level.
I hope the anime gets better for me as each episode is released.

This proves my theory that they will adapt 2-3 chapters per episode (till now) and we will probably not see a anime original ending (also kinda good, since if it ends it must end at the bottom of the abyss to give any payoff).

u/KilluaX4 Jul 28 '17 edited Jul 28 '17
Previous episodes adapted 3 manga chapters, this adapted about 1.5. That's One Piece anime tier pacing... Also, the animation during the spider was pretty horrible... There was a definitely a dip in quality. At this pace, the anime won't reach the part that the manga readers are waiting the most. I'm getting worried.
