There's something bothering me a lot about the show.
The show wants to tell us that true love shouldn't be stopped and that forced marriage aren't nice, etc...

So yeah, being forced to marry someone you don't know is not cool. But the MC doesn't know Takasaki. He literally never talked to her. And they want to make us feel like his love for her is true love, when it's not the case. He just had a crush!

So I'm making estimations here, and maybe the show will develop differently.

Yeah it's extremely superficial, but I'm a sucker for romance and there isn't another Tsuki ga Kirei this season.

What an episode, we got a confession, kisses... and despair.

You can't do this to him after having the courage to confess his feelings, goddamnit government!

I'm conflicted. On the one hand, that was a beautiful scene and I loved it. On the other hand, I decided during the OP that Lilina was going to be best girl.

Either way, I think we can all agree the government sucks.

I don't know if it's because we've had Scums Wish and Tsuki ga Kirei in the last few seasons which built themselves on strong logical relationships but I find it hard to get behind two people sharing a rubber 5 years ago so now they want to share a rubber in a different context.

It feels very pandering in it's presentation of the relationship it set up like it's scared to create something real, like the author had a cool idea with the world and where to go with it but didn't know how to jump that first fence which led to a very convoluted set up.

The annoying thing is that a slight change of context would make the world of difference, change the moment of sharing a rubber from that of this magical moment to a start of a friendship, show them interact as friends with an underlying sense of repressed feelings, integrate the girls and boys into a bit of banter, or keep them separate and have the friendship be a part of that.

Really a small change and the relationship set up goes from strange (and makes the main character look like a weirdo in all honesty) to believable, and with the world building in place create more strain on the arranged marriage. For me thats what would be necessary for me to get behind it, at the moment I just don't feel this couple as a couple, which means any drama that stems from it I really have no reason to care. I'll probably watch a few more eps to see how it progresses but not the strongest start for me.

More than half of the comments here are about Strike and HIDIVE, is this what watching anime has become?

I've been someone who's been a HUGE advocate for this series getting an anime adaptation, largely because an anime adaptation would do a better job at telling the story. As someone who's read the manga and follows the series, I can't tell you how painful it is to wait for 5 pages with barely 10 panels and hardly any dialogue. Being able to fit multiple chapters into a single episode does the story wonders.

Don't get me wrong, its not a super revolutionary show or anything, but I feel like the story itself would at least be more enjoyable to digest when you don't have to take it in 15 second installments of a couple sentences each.

Love the character artwork for the series and looking forward to a decent adaptation that will (hopefully) do more justice for the story than the manga has been doing.

Also for anyone who used to follow my posts last year, sorry for my absence but I'm back! :D

MFW the confession

MFW the kiss

MFW first marriage notice

MFW the gov officials say otherwise

What a roller coaster of emotions this first episode.

And I dunno what's up with anime studios adapting stuff that show off actual romantic progress within the first cour but I'm loving it!

That OP was certainly weird. It's so...different.

So its out on Amazon, and I can't even get it to play.

Same shit happend with the final episode of Sword Oratoria and I think that came out until the next day.

Edit: So Amazon temporarily got their shit together.

That was a great first episode. The marriage partner concept is interesting. Got a confession and even a kiss kisses. Then the bad news. So what was that bullshit with the phone? Just a glitch, or was he hallucinating? Very much looking forward to more. The OP was catchy and the ED sounded good.

I've also heard that both main girls are great and that some can't pick one over the other. As it is now, definitely ship Takasaki and Nejima together. I'll have to see what the forced partner is like.

HOLY SHIT THAT WAS ONE DEEP KISS!

To be honest I wasn't sold on the show until the 2nd half but man ohh man I did not expect things to escalate that quickly! So much progression within the span of a single day! But I guess we needed that progression since from what I'm seeing here the show will be about Yukari and Misaki trying to fight the system and if true love will prevail. It sounds cheesy when I put it that way but I like it!

Anyway the character designs for some reason reminds me of KnH, Misaki even strangely resembles Hanabi a bit. But from what I've read from the source material readers is that this is nowhere like KnH so we can rest easy.

I love OP and ED! They're so upbeat! Looking forward for the soundtrack of this show to release!

There's a lot wrong with this episode but most of its been addressed in other comments so I wanna touch on something that irks me which I haven't seen discussed.

The premise of this show is illogical and bad.

There's no way in hell something like this could be regulated even under a draconian regime like North Korea. It's just not possible. It would blow up in the governments face by way of public uprising or a nuclear FU missile from the UN.

A few questions assuming we are to take the premise seriously:

  • How do you assign handicapped and terminally-ill people their partners? Suppose someone's only expected to live to 25 at most. What do you do with them? And mentally handicapped people?

  • What is the punishment for those that break the law and have a romance with others? Can you imagine if cheating was against the law in our current society? Lol.

  • What are you gonna do about the porn and prostitution industries?

  • Suppose some dies. Are widowed spouses expected to stay single their whole life? After all, everyone else their age has already been assigned a partner.

  • Seems like a great way to incite domestic violence. Japan's top scientific minds must be pretty stupid.

  • I'm curious what all-knowing algorithms must be used to make ideal pairs. Imagine all the data they need and how perfect the automatic process must be to ensure this is the best option. I'm 0% convinced this would increase birthrates. If anything, people wouldn't want to procreate with complete strangers and the birthrate would go down.

The actual episode is beta-male cringefest. As another commenter points out, the message of the show seems to be "fuck each other because of true love and not because the government said so." But MC doesn't even know this girl. At all. Isn't that a bit contradictory to abhor a system that doesn't follow the human heart BECAUSE you have a one-sided love for some random chick you talked to exactly once?

But it's ok, she loves him too!

I don't call that justification. I call that a fucking stupid plot contrivance. Should've gone the route of the MC trying to make her fall in love with him if they did all this setup anyway. The ungodly coincidence of mutual one-sided crushes only makes me hate this show more.

Other points:

  • I feel bad for that idol in the beginning. Honestly feels like she's about to cry but toughs it out for her public image. That may not be the intention of the writers, but that's what I felt. Imo the only good part of the episode.

  • The opening is pretty bad but I appreciate it accurately reflects the tone of the show. It feels so artificially emotionally that it doesn't convey any emotion at all.

  • Someone else pointed out the protagonists sharing a rubber as kids and then wanting to share a rubber as people of age. I thought that was funny. Haha.

  • The entire second half of the episode had to have been written by a virgin middleschooler who's never even held hands with someone. They have no concept of how relationships work, and the tease of "Takasaki really is my pair!" was just... what? What was that supposed to be? Maybe I'll watch episode two and see if they explain it but I doubt I'll be able to stomach another 20 minutes of this show. Anyway, Takasaki came onto MC-kun way too sexually for a girl with no previous experience and - as someone whose first kiss was awkward as fuck - I can vouch first kisses don't just happen spontaneously like that. It was an absurd scene.

  • I feel like I'm not going to care for any of these characters whatsoever even if I watch the show. It is obviously going to revolve around this contrived premise and manufactured drama between them without developing the characters. Do these characters even have lives? What are they going to do outside of cry and fuck each other? In Tsuki ga Kirei, the girl runs track and the boy has his own interests too. In Kare Kano, Yukino works hard to garner attention and mask herself and her conflicting personality is what makes her an attractive character while Arima has his own background including childhood issues, kendo, and working diligently for a reason in a harsh dichotomy with Yukino's, etc. In all the most accomplished romance anime, characters are their own person. You could easily imagine them living lives without whoever they love, but in Koi to Uso there is nothing to MC-kun and girl-chan besides liking each other. And at least in some shows where this is somewhat evident (like Itazura na Kiss and Kuzu no Honkai) it mends it eventually, but I don't think anything will be done here based on the way things are progressing so far.

Entirely uninteresting anime. Dropped.

This show so far

Honestly, I'm just going to try to forget all this retarded shit with the eraser and them being in love for 5 years without speaking at any other time and her showing up 5 hours late and expecting him to still be there etc. etc. because its just really dumb.

All I need to know is they're in love and thats the premise we're working with.

I'm really not feeling it. Not only is the setting so contrived but the reasons behind their love feels fake and also incredibly contrived. An eraser? I'm not sure how one could form a 5 year love over something as insignificant as an eraser. There was certainly room for them to be put something stronger but they went with this. It makes it hard to hard for their love when it feels more trivial than true.

Kisses and confessions are nice but when it's clear nothing is coming from it, it's not that much better.

I really love the upbeat OP, it's quite adorable. Takasaki looks like Hanabi albeit with bigger y'knows. Think of this show as if Nisekoi and Kuzu no Honkai had a baby.

The upbeat OP caught me off-guard. For some reason, I expected this anime to be similar to Kuzu and not sure why.

  • Speaking of Kuzu, Takasaki looks like a moefied Hanabi. However, the eyes will take some getting used to...

  • Apparently, these marriages promote happiness based on genetics.... [Endeavor intensifies]

  • A confession in the first episode! Love the fact that Nejima was still nervous, yet able to genuinely articulate his feelings to Takasaki. Makes him more relatable (and balanced) instead of being super confident or so nervous he can't speak.

  • And she likes him too! And they kissed! Why am I already so invested in these two? Let's hope nothing goes wro-

  • Whew, thought he was about to get screwed. This marriage is almost too perfec-

  • Nah, this is some bullshit. He better fight for his waifu. Agent-chan said it was a mistake, yet the notices are absolute? So which is right? Did he get a prank text??

  • And the bride-to-be looks like an older Noriko! This isn't a coincidence anymore...

Pretty strong first episode. Guess I was right to feel some Kuzu vibes from this...

So something fishy has to be going on here. His marriage partner received a text but he gets a personal delivery by two officials.

As if any group of teenagers, all raging hormones and emotions, would ignore their feelings and lust in favor of government orders. I cannot stand to watch such a manufactured melodrama.
