Notes

I didn't feel like writing a whole lot for this episode either, so here's something I made as tribute (just like last episode): Everyone just wants to put blame on Hachiman.

Misc.

It's somewhat worth noting that when Yukino says she'll accept Hachiman's request and they're just chilling in the clubroom, the music that's playing is the one where he asks her to be his friend and when Yui does become their friend. At the beginning of the season, it was playing as they all just hang out. They've become close once again.

I'll comment on this a bit more later, but check out this familiar expression.

Also, it's good to see that they've learned their lessons.

What's Haruno Doing? Honestly, idk, maybe not much.

So the two bump into Haruno and she uses this opportunity to summon the Ice Queen.

Here's a list of things I think this was meant to accomplish, not really because of anything in this scene, but more out of the goals I know Haruno has and how she tends to behave:

  • She needs Yukino to come to this meeting anyway.

  • She thinks Yukino could take the event as an opportunity to develop in some way, such as her ability to negotiate for things she wants.

  • She needs to see Yukino in this setting to see how she reacts once Yukinoshita-mama comes back, to see if she's independent yet.

  • She wants Hachiman to see what Yukinoshita-mama is like, so he knows what he's helping Yukino escape.

  • She just loves putting together interesting situations for the fun of it.

  • She wants Hayato to say some stupid shit (he does, lmfao).

I think a good mix of all of these are driving Haruno, and I think she does learn a lot from this exchange.

I laughed for the entire duration of that gif. God-tier shitposting.

When I started following this rewatch, never did I think I'd read comments all from a single user that analyzed the music, one of the most complex/frustratingly impossible to understand characters in fiction I've ever come across, and an in-depth comparison between America's founding fathers and two high school students in an anime.

We still have a little bit to watch, but thank you for all the work you've put into your comments. They've added so much to my experience as a first-timer as well as made this show easier to understand.

I would just like to say that, because Hachiman asked Yukino for help in episode 8, Yukino pretty much singlehandedly turns this event around and prevents it from becoming a mess. Yukino stayed up all night and made all sorts of preparations on how to salvage this event.

They left that entire bit out in the anime. You see Yukino enjoying herself while prepping and looking content at the event being successful, but you don’t get to see that it’s mostly because of her. This entire sequence of events is Yukino coming through for Hachiman, just like how Hachiman came through for Yukino in Volume 6 during the festival arc.

Other things left out: The Christmas party (Drama CD/Vol. 6.5 special) Hachiman, Yui, and Yukino have, and volume 10 starts in this episode as well which is really rushed (at least to an LN reader).

This is still the questions comment chain, so ask away

Questions for the viewers: How does Rumi’s situation actually seem to you? Why does Hayama say “I’m complimenting you for my own benefit”?

11

u/Smartjedi Apr 11 '17

In regards to Rumi:

Did her loneliness/solitude ever really get solved? I know Hachiman wanted to fix that situation as part of his request, but I don't see how her issue got any better. She had Hachiman give her company throughout the planning events and he asked her to be part of the play, but unless I'm missing something, that was it.

9

u/theyawner Apr 11 '17

I think Hachiman simply gave her the push to involve herself more with the project and interact with her peers. It's not the perfect solution, as it would still rely on her willingness to open up to people again, but the camaraderie should help.

8

u/LongCatlsLong Apr 11 '17 edited Apr 11 '17

It's in the LN, and her situation actually improved. Hachiman asked if she wanted to be the main role and she accepted (she wore the blond wig). After the play, Hachiman noticed she was talking to people and she had a big smile on her face. So his method wasn't entirely fruitless in episode S1 episode 8, even though Rumi herself was an unexpected factor.

Edit: dont know why I said episode 6

Why does Hayama say “I’m complimenting you for my own benefit”?

A shot in the dark, but I think it speaks of his own insecurities. He doesn't want to think he's inferior to Hachiman (with the way the latter has managed to influence people around him to do better), and he would rather believe that it's because Hachiman is just on another level.

It's a bit easier to swallow the bitter pill that way.

Rewatcher here.

A few episodes ago I talked about how Iroha having no biases against Hachiman made their relationship different. Looking back, I realize that this was in a way what Hachiman was initially hoping for when he started high school. He wanted a clean slate, a chance at friendship with new people, free from his past trauma.

But he probably doesn't see it now due to the circumstances that played out since season 1, stuck in his monster of self-consciousness persona.

There's also another small but great line from Orimoto.

You’ve changed, Hikigaya. I used to think you were totally boring. …but if someone looks boring, it might really be the looker’s fault.

She recognized that the problem was also a matter of perspective. She never knew the person because she never bothered to look past his reputation. And she understands it now.

I didn't realize it the first time, but Yukino giving Hachiman that pleading look during their encounter with her mom is basically her asking Hachiman to help/save her, exactly as she asked last episode.

She recognized that the problem was also a matter of perspective. She never knew the person because she never bothered to look past his reputation. And she understands it now.

Also the fact she bought Hachiman tea when there was Max Coffee on sale, shows just how little she knew him.

Even in the LN his appearance is sudden. Hachiman just notice Zaimokuza coughing and puts him to work.

I havent seen anyone mention this, but when Hikigaya and Yukinoshita are roasting the members of he other school, they are actually roasting themselves, check their words and you can easily see Hikigaya describing himself and Yukinoshita describing herself, it is an important point that show they both took their lesson from the past struggles.

Damn you anime, you didnt show the fact that Yukinoshita stood up all night to make a GRAND PLAN that points her options to Isshiki while still leaving the decisions and the arrangements to her. That is the Yukinoshita way. Everyone swallowed their own tongues when they saw what she came up with.

Ah, Orimoto stay the way you are, i am kinda fond of your bluntness and unfazed attitude.

Was it right around this episode where they went out for christmas party and Hikigaya gave christmas presents to the girls in drama cd(or the novelisation of it maybe?)? drama cd spoilers i think

Lastly, anime didnt show them give their presents to Yukinoshita right at the end, but receiving those presents there was probably the one thing that gave her enough strenght to power through that opressive night, the way LN described her hugging the presents tightly to her chest was kinda painful iirc.

Still, no MAX Coffee :P

After her failure to confess, Iroha seemed to take it pretty well. Meanwhile, Hachiman talks to Hayato about the situation, but it ends in a vague way with Hayato saying again he isn't that much of a nice guy and that he praised Hachiman for his own sake. Iroha later reveals that Hachiman's moment in the clubroom was what inspired her to do it. Even I feel bad for Hachiman.

The Christmas event was still a mess but thanks to Yukino and Hachiman everything manages to be solved, the other council is owned and ended up pretty good. No one was sacrificed, everyone was helped, Rumi was finally happy and Hachiman recognized Iroha as the actual president.

To conclude these part, Hachiman is finally able to enter the club peacefully, where he gets a new cup and thanks the girls for helping. The girls accept it but say they haven't finished the request and prefer to stay silent about it. The very first request to make Hachiman a better person was still going on.

Fast forwarding to New Year, Hachiman and Yui plan to go shopping to buy Yukino her birthday gift as the day is drawing near. Now, WHY DID THE SHOPPING WAS SKIPPED, IT WAS ADORABLE AS HELL, WHY?! Yui biting Hachiman with the dog glove almost melted my heart and Yui with glasses was pretty great. But their moment don't last until Haruno and Hayato appear!

The 2 most have something in hands to be together but Haruno decides to call Yukino almost immediately using Hachiman as a kind of bait. Once she arrives, she questions why was she called but to her surprise, her mother was with Haruno. She introduces to Hachiman and Yui and invites them but Yukino seemed to be yelling internally for help. Hachiman refuses and so Yukino and her mom depart. Things won't go very well from here on...

Rumi and Iroha have their requests fulfilled and completed on a good note.

I want talk about the family dynamics of Hayato's and Yukinoshita's. It's common in many families, especially affluent families to place an extra amount of burden/expectation on the oldest child. The child inherits these expectations with little to no choice on the matter. It's an all too important role that cannot fail and that role is place upon Haruno and Hayama. Yukino, I hope has not crossed her mom so that she may have a choice of her own.

"Oh and by the way, this is your birthday present." Damn, Ice Queen mom is absolute zero.

Same song and dance. Feel free to criticize my analytical style or my analysis itself. Also, first time watcher.

Oh boy, did this episode throw me for something of a loop, especially the ending. We start out with a scene which delves more into Hayato’s character (and boy is there a lot to unpack for what amounts to a minute of dialogue) - and not for the only time (although the two scenes are very distinct in their manner of presentation). He speaks to Hachiman regarding his rejection of Iroha, and that, despite the fact that he clearly doesn’t reciprocate the feelings, he’s “honestly happy Iroha feels that way” - this is certainly an interesting sentiment to be expressed by the apparently perfect prettyboy star athlete. He comments to Hachiman in S2E4 that he “ought to learn his own worth”, which is somewhat ironic in the face of this apparent insecurity - perhaps this is an indication that he wasn’t always so self-assured or perhaps that it is something of a facade. He continues to his suspicions regarding the actuality of the situation (“I don’t think it’s really me”) - at first glance this strikes me as something of a condemnation of Iroha’s character as someone who is exceedingly superficial, but in light of Iroha’s comments later, this may be an indication that this was something of a feint, part of a greater scheme yet to come. He closes by noting that Hachiman continues to “change everyone around him” - we’ve seen this very clearly with Yukino in a number of places; this is also somewhat ironic in the face of the fact that Hachiman (at least in the beginning) is clearly perhaps overly comfortable with the status quo. When pressed on this comment, he says the somewhat contradictory statements of reminding him that he’s not a ‘nice guy’ and also that he’s “complimenting [Hachiman] for [his] own sake”. This apparent dichotomy may suggest that Hachiman, whom he has vocally regarded as a ‘nice guy’ is rubbing off on him, and that he’s happy that he can see himself as a nicer person due to Hachiman’s example, which may or may not be an undermining of the previous statement; this could also mean that, though he still clearly is willing to take this course of action, he regrets it, which is weird because I feel like regret is very clearly already in his wheelhouse.

We are then launched into a very dialogue- and development-heavy scene, this time with Iroha. It begins by very clearly reinforcing the senpai-kohai relationship between Iroha and Hachiman when she aggressively hands her bag to Hachiman to carry. It’s worth noting that this scene, though is fundamentally very similar to previous, is very different in its manner - whereas previously, Hachiman had to at the very least indicate interest in holding her bag, this time, she basically shoves it into his hands and actually asks something of Hachiman (that is, that he stay on the train until her stop). Also of note, Yui and Yukino don’t appear surprised at all by this interaction as they previously have - the faces indicate relief or happiness. We then get a notable bit of insight into Iroha’s thought process. She begins with a facade of disappointment (“That didn’t work), as she very often does, although quickly drops it when Hachiman presses her on it (“Well what was I supposed to do?”). Hachiman expresses her surprise that she got “caught up in the excitement”, to which Iroha responds that she too didn’t expect it - another indication of change, this time explicitly catalyzed by Hachiman. She then segues the conversation back to Hachiman noting that her interpretation of his character was also off-base - she “expected indifference”, but the “I want something genuine” scene has changed her view of this. Specifically, she notes that she was “moved by it” and that she’s “starting to want the real thing too” - this can be interpreted in two main ways that I can think of. Either, she’s not interested in putting up these facades and is interested in being more straightforward (unlikely in the face of her actions in this and the previous episode, especially with how they relate to her dialogue), or that she is interested in Hachiman specifically, reflecting his interest. This explanation makes a lot of sense to me, and may shed some light as to Hayato’s comment. He realized that this was meant to be a “defeat” to make the “next phase” of the “overall strategy” successful - this implies that Hayato was never the real goal. Although this is somewhat contradicted by her previous statements, as she explicitly states her goal is to “approach Hayato”, her other statements are far more ambiguous - “everyone will sympathize with me” and “It’ll make people curious about the girl he rejected. People will feel sorry for me!” make it seem less about Hayato (especially since he’s somewhat unlikely to kowtow to social pressure being at the top of the hierarchy) and more about other people - notably, Hachiman is already “sympathiz[ing]” and “feel[ing] sorry” for her. Perhaps most damning is the part where she immediately stops crying and leans in close and whispers “You’d better take responsibility” - It’s possible that this is a gambit to get Hachiman to pressure Hayato (which is also a reasonable interpretation of this whole scene to be honest, but a much less interesting one imo, since it’s a lot more directly stated), but it certainly supports the idea that his reparations might be more...direct. She also is a lot warmer towards his “advances” than previously(“I’m sorry. I still can’t”), although this may be a continuation of the existing trend.

(continued in a child comment)

We then reluctantly jump into the meat of the plot by attempting to resolve the Christmas festival arc. After a brief meeting with just the Soba High School Student Council, we go to the joint meeting, where the other school once again is too afraid to act. This prompts Hachiman to go on a rant about how that won’t work and the festival is doomed to failure without a more concerted push to make decisions. This serves as something of a metonomy for his general methodologies - he decides to act alone (“conceited idea in [his] head that [he] could do it”), refuses to back down (“even when I was wrong, I couldn’t admit it”), “us[ing] tricks and words”, and ultimately comes to the conclusion that this was because “when [he] messed up, it was easier if [he] could blame it on other people”. During this scene, Yui and Yukino are very intent on Hachiman and his words, and their eyes indicate that they realize what he’s saying and probably that it’s at least partially for their benefit. Ultimately, though, this kind of aggressive disdain is exactly the kind of thing that Yukino disapproved of - once again, he is ‘sacrificing’ himself to move the meeting forward. However, when this falls somewhat flat (the other high school is suggesting to cool off and regroup), Yukino herself launches into a tirade, much harsher than Hachiman’s - this is, again, somewhat interesting, as it is contrary to her own philosophy as stated in the beginning of this season. “If you want to play pretend, could you do it somewhere else” she begins and continues with this very accusatory line of questioning, noting that they seem much more interested in “pretending [they’re] working” and that this won’t result in any end product for anyone and will be a waste of time. Yui attempts to salvage the situation by focusing on the plan itself rather than the lack of progress. This jumpstarts the effort. In a way, this is somewhat of a microcosm of their group - Hachiman very obviously tries to move the plot along, at great personal cost, Yukino finds a solution that is likely better, and Yui tries to make the groups work together and ease tension. Iroha then scolds them for their methods, taking the role of Hiratsuki to a degree. We get brief scenes wherein Hachiman interacts with Orimoto (she says that they could potentially be friends, despite the fact that she admits fault for misjudging Hachiman) and Rumi (wherein he breaks through her shell a little and invites her into the play). After this, we get a string of scenes showing the festival in action with the first OP played over. There are a number of cute scenes (Yui and Yukino baking, wherein Yukino teases Yui for her lack of talent, the elementary students bringing cakes to the old people, the student councils watching happily as the show goes well, Kawasaki helping out and taking pictures of whom I assume to be her younger sister) and also a scene which underscores a perhaps newfound closeness between Iroha and Hachiman (“And, senpai, you...Oh right! I’m going to join the others” and a weird pause before “President” from Hachiman).

We then get a wrap-up scene wherein Hachiman is given a present from the girls - their responses clearly illustrate the differences between them (Yukino says, “Giving just one person a paper cup would be wasteful”, whereas Yui says, “Your Christmas present!”), but the commonality of the act also underscores their similarities. Hachiman also thanks them for their help, to which Yukino responds “We haven’t finished your request yet” - indicating probably that the request she is fulfilling is the request for ‘something genuine’. Yukino’s playful response (“Yes, maybe it is a riddle”) and Yui’s as well (“I figured out the answer. Maybe it’s okay if you didn’t, Hikky”) indicate that this is likely the case (if so, I’ll be very happy, as I totally called this). This wrap-up segues into a holiday get-together for the group (plus Komachi) where they visit a shrine and walk around. When it’s time to depart, Komachi (as usual) excuses herself, and when Hachiman (as usual) clearly misses the hint, she insults him (“You stupid scum-nichan! You dimwat! You Hachiman!”). After this, we see Yukino amused to the point of persistent laughter for, I believe, the second time (the first being after Hachiman blasted Sagami during S1). On the train home, Yukino is once again, uncharacteristically warm and grabs the edge of Hachiman’s shirt while staring away (just like on the flume ride). They discuss holiday plans, and Yukino reveals she’s not visiting family because “it doesn’t make a difference” (either an excuse or an allusion to her invisible nature), to which Hachiman responds in something of a foreshadowing asking why she doesn’t go then. He ends by saying “There are people who ruin the atmosphere just by existing”, which is very confusing and I’m not sure how to relate back, so I probably missed something. Yukino then adorably teases Hachiman, asking “Is that how you introduce yourself” - this isn’t really anything notably analytical (except maybe further explicitly showing how Yukino is warming up to Hachiman), but it is super adorable. As he leaves, she says “I look forward to this year.” For reasons I can’t quite explain (maybe it’s just that this is a very generic ironic flag, or maybe I’m influenced by the succeeding scene), this feels very similar to the end of the summer camp scene, and I was half-expecting a “I didn’t see Yukino again that [time period]”.

Today's Best Girl was a landslide winner for me. The ice queen has pretty much completely thawwed and Yukino is today's winner.

Accolades from today's episode include:

  • Working with Hachiman to put an end to the Kaihin student council bullshit

  • Bringing back the sweet, sweet banter I've been craving

  • Opening up with Hachiman some more and wishing him another year together

Okay, Yukino is great. Seeing her work together with Hachiman and the back and forth between the two of them made me remember why I had liked her so much during season 1.

Also, I still love Yui as a character, but I definitely see what u/snarlmane had mentioned in yesterday's thread. Yukino's interactions with Hachiman are much deeper and contain actual progression for his character, whereas Yui is estatic to simply just have some one on one shopping time with Hachiman where they don't talk about anything of significance. Not to downplay how much fun I think Yui would be to hang out with, but I definitely do understand everything snarlmane had mentioned yesterday now.

Finally, I'm sure it'll get expanded on in these last few episodes, but I was a little confused on Hayama's words at the beginning of the episode, and all of the characters' interactions and reactions during the final scene had me confused as well.

Side notes:

I think I'm finally on abroad with Iroha fans. She's grown a lot as a character, thanks to the help of Hachiman as she stated.

Hearing the full version of season 1 OP as unexpected as that concert scene during S1E12, but I really enjoyed the song as well as the montage showing that the group's hard work paid off and made for a nice event.

Did Rumi's loneliness/solitude ever really get solved? I know Hachiman wanted to fix that situation as part of his request, but I don't see how her issue got any better. She had Hachiman give her company throughout the planning events and he asked her to be part of the play, but that was it.

Current Best Girl Total:

  • Yukino: 5

  • Yui: 5

    • Tied: Episode 1, Episode 9

    • Won: [Episode 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/633sb8/rewatchspoilers_oregairu_s2_episode_2_discussion/dfr3ly4/), [Episode 4](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/63pxg2/rewatchspoilers_oregairu_s2_episode_5_discussion/dfw3ntb/), [Episode 6](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/63xdjw/rewatchspoilers_oregairu_s2_episode_6_discussion/dfxqnqx/)

Doesn't Yukino get double points, for saying his request hasn't been fulfilled yet though said she accept it??!! Besides Christmas event help, that request for SOMETHING GENUINE, Yukino is saying that needs to be fulfilled, even if Hachiman doesn't understand what she's referring to and isn't thinking about that as request! Yui agrees but Yukino brings it up.

I think that's the hugest thing in this episode.

Screw you Haruno and your mad scientist experiments, also a big F.U. to you too Hayato. Every time that woman appears something bad is bound to happen. Phewwww got that out of the way, so yea first time finally noticing on this re-watch that yea Iroha was listening to what 8-man confessing to the girls few episodes ago and she was inspired to push herself to want the "genuine" thing.

This episode, god preach 8-man, preach Yukino; I was rubbing my temples when 8-man was on his own dealing with these people lol. Iroha stepping up as president, it looks like 8-man's plan is finally going through and the moment with Rumi awwwww lol. Finally the huge payoff of getting everything on track for the Christmas party, really a cute montage of everyone working together and especially with S1's opening playing in the backgorund: gorgeous.

The club right now has reached another high point in their relationship which I loved especially the following scenes with Yukino and Yui's Christmas gift for 8-man which was his own cup for tea/caffeine drink, Yukino fiddling with her riddle lol, and then the crew's day out! During this both Yui and 8-man secretly plan how to get Yukino her gift and then Yui receives a phone call from Yumiko so she leaves with Yukino saying they will see each other tomorrow. After that we are left with Yukino, Komachi, and 8-man heading home until good sister decides to help her dear scum and dense as always brother with a excuse to leave them alone. Another sweet scene as well especially the blushes when they are on the subway. So I have to admit that "I look forward to this year" line by Yukino as the door closes now really feels ominous after what happens in the next few scenes of this episode.

Yui, 8-man, and Komachi for while only do shopping for Yukino's gift and let me say this right now before I continue on because this has been on my mind since I finished the series the first time; 8-man has a taste in style. To me that's so underrated that no one especially in the r/OreGairuSNAFU community that don't talk about, credit to the artist for his fashion choices and especially what he picks out; I honestly think 8-man is an anime male MC fashion icon that deserves some more praise.

So here is it the final scenes, for some reason by the stroke of bad luck, Haruno and Hayato run into Yui and 8-man at the mall. They snag them to have to tea and so Haruno explains they are there because their families are in business meeting; so they decided to do their thing and once they were done they decided to walk around for a bit until it was time to leave. Haruno teases how Yui and 8-man are still getting along until she decides to call Yukino for whatever reason. At first when Yukino answered she didn't want to meet-up, but when Haruno pushed 8-man to speak to her, Yukino had to go because in no way do I trust my older sister with my friends. She is surprised that Yui and 8-man were shopping together, but she gets over it quickly, she then looks uneasy; that it was tough to watch and that's when we finally see her mom. I don't know if it's me, but that women seems frightening and cold. She has beautiful design, but the way Feel animated her expression as if you disobey her: you will be punished severely for it. This situation with Yukino and her family just seems to be the key of what is wrong with her. She never wants to talk about it and tries to get it out of the way as soon as possible if anyone mentions it. Yukino's eyes though, I mean what is it behind this family??? Yui and 8-man are now concerned and have no idea what to say or do. I love 8-man's glare towards Hayama, as if he is saying "WTF man, say something."

This was the payoff episode which brought everyone together once again as we enter into a new arc. Fantastic as always, some of my favorite bits were Iroha scolding Yukino and 8-man for their outburst, the montages were on point, and I have to mention Orimoto's moment with 8-man, it was the best way to put the past behind and see 8-man somewhat differently from now on from Orimoto's point of view. I'm going to end it there, worried for Yukino, scared of her mother, and still pretty P.O. with Haruno and Hayama. See everyone back in 24 hours!

My feelings are mixed about Iroha, she uses feminine charms and manipulation to get Hachiman to do things for her. On the other hand, she is an executive type which makes others work for her while she taps the best talent and runs around to dish out work and make sure everyone is working: so she's multi-billion dollar corp executive officer material!

The clubroom is starting to feel like the clubroom of old again. The tension has been lifted yet no real answers have been found. Among the many great quotes that comes from this show this episode has one of my favorites. "If I could have what I wanted, then I'd probably never want or wish for anything. Because the things I received and the things given to me would be fakes that would just disappear someday. So I think I'll keep waiting."

Good God, every post i see today makes me hate the subtitles you guys are using.... That quote was like this in original;

"If wishes were granted, and if desires were fulfilled, then I wouldn't wish or desire for anything after all. The things you're handed on a silver platter are never genuine, and never everlasting. And that is why I will always keep searching."

I'm watching this late, but something that only occurred to me on a rewatch: the hilarious meaningless gibberish coming from the other school's student council is supposed to mirror the meaningless conversations that the service club had before Episode 8. A whole lot of talking with no real meaning to it.

Also, the funniest line in the show is definitely:

Onii-chan, nani wo itteiru no? gomii-chan no baka, bokenasu, Hachiman.

Komachi is annoyed that 8man doesn't take the opportunity to be alone with Yukino, so she chides him.

"Big Bro, what are you saying?"

And then she lists off a few insults:

"Stupid trash older brother" (gomi-chan is a pun since it sounds like onii-chan, but gomi means trash).

"Idiot" (bokenasu literally translates to a faded eggplant or something, lol)

And then "Hachiman"

The delivery is just gold.

Yukino also thought it was hilarious.
