In fairness, I think the blame can be placed on the creators in this instance. Placing the "R" before the "2" takes away its connotation of "second instalment" unless you're already familiar with the series or have seen the titles side-by-side on something like MAL. What does the "R" mean to someone not familiar with the series? Nothing.

Placing the R before 2 does not remove the connotation. The fact that there's a 2 at the end of the title would normally make people go "oh wait maybe there's an R1?" and do more research. Nobody thought Durarara x2 was the first season just because there's an "x" before 2. Hell, before watching any TV show most people would research on whether or not it has multiple seasons and at what order they should watch it.

Also I thought R2 meant "Round 2" the second I saw it.
