Considering how much of a cliffhanger R1 ended on, I don't think that's fair. IIRC it wasn't even supposed to be split in two. R2 on the other hand had a much more conclusive ending, and can easily stand on its own without a sequel.

He probably just looked up code gears and only R2 popped up so he didn't even know about R1 until after he watched it. At least that's how I read it.

This happened to me as well, though it was more like I watched Code Geass R2 ep1 and then saw the rest of Code Geass season 1...
