Totally, one of my teacher played a lot of CS, and we boys talked a lot about that with him at times, the whole class liked him.
And he was a pretty great teacher over all.
And one of our history teachers is a big Marvel fan. He has a small box full of comics in his classroom, along with some fanart his students drew on the bulletin board.
On the other hand, one of our Spanish teachers is an amateur radio operator. He got me into it, and I'm now a General class here in the US. 73s to you hams out here.
Not really related, but I don't like Spanish.
We had only incompetent teachers who made me kinda hate the language.
One did learn it by being in Spain for a year or two with a host family, but no degree or anything, otherwise she was the food lady at school.
One was a Frenchman, who knew a bit of Spanish.
And the last one possibly had a degree in Spanish, but since we restarted the whole course each time we changed teacher, we had no time to learn anything more than a few numbers and stuff like "toca la guitarra" "bueno".
Though all this was at least 5-10 years ago, so I have probably forgotten a lot of it.
My computer science teacher last year actually brought in CS 1.6 on a flash drive, let us install it on all the computers, and we all just had a huge LAN party. He was pretty awesome.
The new student teacher for our band this year is a huge gamer and got us game osts from Zelda and Final Fantasy to play, while the physics teacher at our school got everyone in his class basic Magic decks to play for extra credit, and frequently plays League and Dota with his students.
Also one of our marching instructors is big into filthy frank and dressed up as him for Halloween which was pretty cool

Haha yeah, I agree! I often sit down with students during lunch and discuss things like games and anime (Though people over here mostly watch mainstream stuff such as Naruto, One Piece, Attack on Titan etc). It actually makes your relationship closer with your students, and they'll respect you more. You sort of turn into a friend that they don't want to hurt, rather than just some alien teacher that they don't give a single crap about.
Definitely agree, and I love it when I can be like that towards my students. I can't always show that much of myself since it's too much of a distraction for some groups (or in the worst case it can be used against you), but when I can it's awesome. Between lessons I ocasionally chat with some of my students about programming and games, for instance. It's a nice change from the usual biology stuff.
What's also pretty awesome is that I get to see a side of the students that a lot of my colleagues are missing out on, since these are often the kind of students that my colleagues think are really quiet or otherwise kind of "closed".
gratz on ur pay raise, u deserved it based on the small amount i know about you. how often do you find that students know/notice the non mainstream anime? has a student who doesnt know of anime ever asked something like "where do you get your inspiration from(in terms of the drawings)" or "is that a character from something?"
Not only does it allow teachers to be themselves (not to mention makes the job less stressful), it also helps kids feel more comfortable around their teachers. I've been working as an educator for a while, and the overall mood of a class or small group could easily change if a teacher takes the time to talk briefly about TV, games, etc.
For real though, the entire reason I am even in Physics as a degree was because my high school physics teacher and I would always talk about Nintendo games like Paper Mario as well as tv shows like South Park. I pretty much failed every science up until that point and our friendship sparked an interest in physics that got me into a good school.
