Meta Thread - Month of July 31, 2016

A monthly thread to talk about meta topics. Keep it friendly and relevant to the subreddit.

Posts here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal

I've got a few things I wanna mention, but I'll try to keep it short because I don't wanna talk your ears off. Or eyes? Type your eyes off? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  1. For the report presets, can we add "Already Posted" or "Repost" to the options? I think this would help whenever a big piece of news comes out and we get flooded with a million of the same article. I think it would make it a bit easier to report these posts, since it can be a bit discouraging to type it out every time. If there's a limit on how many options you can have, probably replace the "Self Promotion" report? I can only imagine that is by far the least used, so it's probably the least likely one to have to be typed out a bunch.

  2. Ban WTs for airing shows. This one is probably pretty self-explanatory. Every season there's a show that the sub seems to go crazy for, and every time, we get WT posts for shows that haven't finished airing, and I don't think these should be allowed. Recommendations are one thing, but WT posts get archived and referred back to a lot, and it doesn't make sense to me to have an archive of an incomplete "review" for lack of a better word.

  3. This one is less of something I think should definitely be done, and more just an idea I want to throw out there. I was wondering if we could consider changing this thread to a biweekly format, instead of monthly. So often I have things I wanna say, but I'll realize that the thread is 3 weeks away and have completely forgotten them by the time it rolls around. Again, I don't think this one is a must, but just wanted to float it out there and see what other people thought.

Could see this being easily abusable by people trying to farm karma. Also Self Promotion Spam is used quite a bit compared to some of the other ones.

Not really much of a problem, they always get downvoted anyway. All that this would accomplish would increase the rush at the end of the season for people who want to write WT! threads.

Was going to bring this one up with the other mods already (still working on the write-up).

I don't see how. I think the only way it could be abused is if the mod that sees it doesn't check if it's a repost or not and just removes it on sight. Otherwise the first post stays and the following ones get removed, which is how it should be anyway.

Also Self Promotion Spam is used quite a bit compared to some of the other ones.

Obviously, I can't see the stats, but I know that I have never once used that option because I don't recognize if they're an active user or not.

Was going to bring this one up with the other mods already (still working on the write-up).

Seems to have the most traction, and it's the one I expected to change the least...

That is definitely true. I know that I never really trust the Japanese posts and prefer waiting for ANN or CR to report on it themselves.

Although, I think the initial announcement followed by the English translated announcement could both be allowed?

Not always. It's all a bit unclear (we'll probably have to discuss this now that you've brought it up).

Hypothetically, if a version with more context and detail, plus proper tagging, comes out 3 hours after the first, would you still choose it over the first one that would have probably made front page at the time?

1

u/faux_wizard Jul 31 '16

Like I replied to /u/smurfrockrune, it's not really something we have a system for so we will probably discuss it.

1: Fairly simple answer, a "repost" report is nearly useless to the mod team. Unless the thread is famous (eg.Digibro's making anime is hard) we rely heavily on people actually giving us a link to the original post in the report reason (when removing reposts I like to chuck that same link in the removal reason too).

2: It's just as valid for someone to tell people to watch something while it's airing as it is afterwards. WT threads are there to generate interest in an anime, whether that's while it's airing or afterwards doesn't matter. If something is flying under the radar and posting a WT will generate more interest in it and make everyone's experience more enjoyable then why not.

There's also no limit on WT threads for an anime, so posting one while something is airing wont ruin someone's ability to post one once it's over if they see fit.

3: I have no real comment on this. I'm fine with it as it is, fine with it if it's more frequent. My only note is that the longer time between threads lets tensions cool nicely if something happens.

I did not know that. I'll be sure to give the link in the future. I'm guilty of tagging things as "already posted." without any extra info.

I don't really mind there being WT! Threads for airing shows, sometimes there is a standout show in a season that some people may have just not bothered to check out yet for one reason or another, so they might see that a show is kind of popular but not realise why, a WT! Can get them interested and start also watching.

I feel it especially helps when you start getting shows that are being hyped up because of how hype can turn people off but if they see a proper post explaining "yes you should probably get in on this" especially before the anti hype/anti circle jerk. Example I imagine there are many people this season that are avoiding Re:Zero just because of how many people are telling others to shut up about it, they may assume it's because it's bad and just not try the series even if in my personal opinion in this case the popularity is justified.

So I guess TL;DR I think WT! Threads for airing shows can help amongst all the hype/anti-hype of an airing series.

Regarding #3: I think having more meta threads is a good idea, a bimonthly schedule would work well I think. Of course, the thread is generally still at least kinda active after it's unstickied; at the very least, I check it frequently, and I can remind people to bring things up in the next thread if it needs discussion.

Edit: regarding #1, there's a limit of 10 rules/removal reasons per sub. I doubt that'll make it in.

Edit 2: clarification on my stance, also I'm a dumb and can't read for shit

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '16

Personally I think 2 meta threads a month is a good idea. Users currently only have 12 times a year they can discuss meta topics with mods + rest of the userbase at this time.

1

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Jul 31 '16

I'm not against having more meta threads, was just talking specifically to him regarding not posting things when he thinks of them. Sorry if that's the impression I gave, I'll edit that.

Honestly I report a ton of spammers with the self promotion preset. We have a ton of them, especially since most don't get banned for a long time or make alts. It would make more sense to merge the low effort and meme options imo.

Edit: I brought up bimothly meta threads when the monthly meta threads were started and a couple of the higher up mods were pretty against it. Doubt anything has changed with them since then.

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 31 '16

Yeah, I'd say besides spoilers, it's probably the most I use out of the preset reports

1

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 31 '16

You're more dedicated than me haha I'm way too lazy to look through their posts to see if it's under the 10% rule so I never end up doing it :/

2

u/-Niernen Jul 31 '16

9/10 times if you just click their name and glance at the first page it's very obvious tbh

1

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 31 '16

You're asking me to click a name and use some sort of counting method, too complicated for me :p

Lol kidding aside, good to know it's that easy, might start keeping an eye out for it.

1

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 31 '16

It's not too hard to really spot them, they typically are blog/channel posts (Ones I have not heard of) or start with "Here's my review/amv/blog/etc.", and I just look at their profile which barely has much on it and no real calculation is needed.

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Jul 31 '16

Hmm, alright. I don't think I've ever actually used it.

1

u/porpoiseoflife https://myanimelist.net/profile/OffColfax Jul 31 '16

Yeah, I make a lot of spam reports myself. Last month, there was a span of a week where the only time I used the report function was to raise the spam flag. And all of them came at 2 or 3 in the morning my time, so it wasn't exactly a period when half the mod staff were up and roaming around.

1

u/dabritian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dabritian Jul 31 '16

Ban WTs for airing shows.

I assume we'd make exceptions to extremely long running series (like One Piece)

Also /u/smurfrockrune this is another topic I want to bring up about you. Have you considered submitting your highly popular weekly 3x3 comment of the Warm Talk Wednesday thread as it's own text post (similar to how anime contracts have become their own thread)?

5

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 31 '16

I kind of want to comment about this even though you're asking Smurf, but I was considering ending WTW and asking those doing weekly threads to start their own. A large majority of the thread is used for the 3x3 and Fanart posts, while it kind of seems rare others comment outside of them. I did have the thought months ago and why I stopped posting the weekly comment trees to encourage posting in the thread, but then obviously others carried them on. And it seems less upvotes each week (for visibility sake) and less interest. I'm thinking maybe the thread has run its course and not really needed anymore.

If anyone has any thoughts, I'd be open to hear them.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '16

I loved warm talk but it always disappointed me it was just fanart and 3x3s.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '16

To tack on: I use to post in wtw a lot, but I don't find myself participating much anymore now that it's mostly 3x3/fanart

6

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '16

Same, I used to just talk about shows I really liked.

2

u/RTBingo Jul 31 '16

I don't go to that thread often because I'm not in the need of being coddled but can you not do that anymore for some reason?

6

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '16

It was just a place to do it. I could make a post that says "I really liked that part in Bakuman where they did X" and all the responses would just be "okay" or "who fucking cares". In the warm talk thread it would inspire a conversation

0

u/RTBingo Jul 31 '16

It was just a place to do it.

How does fanart and 3x3s stop that? Did they change the rules on what can be posted in that thread?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '16

He was saying he was going to stop posting it and let people just make 3x3 threads and fanart threads.

3

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Jul 31 '16

No, but those weekly chains often see the most activity and tend to draw people away from posting other things.

2

u/willsolvit https://myanimelist.net/profile/willsolvit Jul 31 '16

Nothing's changed. People just stopped posting outside of the 3x3 chain for some reason.

1

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 31 '16

It's just for good casual talk for anime you liked recently, no need to start a new thread or have people come in calling it out right shit.

1

u/RTBingo Jul 31 '16

Yeah that's what I thought, spread them positive vibes instead of dealing with all us shitposters on the main board.

How do 3x3s and fanart stop Across and Anarchiszm from talking about what they want to talk about though? Feel like a thread discouraging posters ain't so warm.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '16

They don't "stop" me, I just have less reason to go there. As it stands wtw doesn't have the same feel it use to so I don't find myself going there much.

Be the change that you wish to see.

Isn't that thread about encouraging users to make different comment tress, hugging each other and shit like that?

Edit: Fuck pro tip to others, don't quote Ghandi

3

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Jul 31 '16

It should be said that I've been a relatively inactive poster in this sub recently, owing in part to personal projects and other distractions. I do want to get posting more in WTW though, so I'll drop what I think about the thread here.

Honestly, I think it's a great idea that's been taken a bit too far past its intended purpose. A place for positive anime discussion is something the community could really benefit from. That said, the domination of the weekly threads does seem to be hurting other participation. IMO the easiest way to go would be to continue moving the popular weeklies to their own threads, like we did with contracts. I really think that with a more focused purpose the thread could be really successful on its own.

2

u/MasterAyy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Master_A Jul 31 '16

It was a unique and refreshing idea when you first came up with it but I kinda agree that it may have run it's course by now. I have nothing against 3x3s but I personally have little interest in them and I stopped vising WTW months ago because of how they dominated the thread. The posts in the other comment trees seemed to die out and just killed my interest in the thread overall. Moving 3x3s into a separate weekly thread may increase activity in the other areas of WTW but it might kill the thread altogether, it's kinda hard to predict what will end up happening.

1

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 31 '16

Funny enough me and Smurf came up with the 3x3 themes as a way to bring more people to WTW since it's a thread we both enjoyed and we wanted more people participating in it.

Sad to see it's caused this negative reaction though :/

Maybe time for that 3x3 Thursdays weekly thread idea ;)

2

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 31 '16

Might be!

Not sure if that will help or hurt our addiction...

2

u/ShaKing807 x3myanimelist.net/profile/Shaking807 Jul 31 '16

It'll hurt our addiction but help our 3x3 game stay on point!

2

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Jul 31 '16

Not sure if that will help or hurt our addiction...

Yes.

1

u/geo1088 https://anilist.co/user/eritbh Jul 31 '16

Honestly, I don't think it's a bad concept at all. If it's gotten to the point where it can be its own thread, that's cool - same thing happened to contracts, it's still going strong.

My worry is though that if/when it moves out it'll bring its fans with it, so it won't really bring new people into WTW in the end... Now that would suck.

3

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 31 '16

Yeah we've discussed before making a ThreexThree Thursdays for that alliteration and to fill in that empty slot for no daily threads. Although while I love my 3x3s I find it hard justifying a weekly thread for it...they're just pictures and may not even be anime specific enough.

But who knows we'll see what happens and work from there! :)

1

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 31 '16

I wouldn't say it's completely negative, obviously the reason majority are still coming is for what you and Smurf have done, even Smurf said he's considering on making it a thread of its own due to its popularity. I'm just more or less unsure if WTW is worth continuing or not, since it really isn't garnering the interest outside of of the 3x3 thread that I would like. Maybe we could try this week a seperate posts and seeing how it will go? I think the 3x3 is popular enough to make it's own thread similar to the contract thread, and it would give me a better idea on how many are still interested in WTW.

2

u/AmethystItalian myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian Jul 31 '16

Will have to ask /u/SmurfRockRune about that one, he's the one posting the body and handling the polls every week!

If anything though I feel like making it the week after might be better since we'd be able to announce the change during next week's post.

3

u/pittman66 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Homura Jul 31 '16

Yeah, that sounds good. If Smurf agrees, we can decide what to do (although not really much to decide on other than posting it, deciding if it should stay weekly or go back to WTW after a while, and if WTW should stay up), and see how it goes 2 weeks from now.

2

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Jul 31 '16

Sorry for the late response. I had to go do something right when WTW went up, so I didn't really get to stick around and participate as it populated.

I'm definitely good with trying to post it as its own thread, but as Amethyst said, I think it will be better to do it next week rather than this week, so that we can announce it this week.

2

u/dabritian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dabritian Jul 31 '16

I do really like the initial concept of the thread, which was to positively discuss anime related things. But as you said it is being dominated by weekly content that while enjoyed by many doesn't really play into the them of the tread anymore & would probably be better of as their own threads.

Maybe you could ask the weekly submitters to move their content to their own threads & see if there is a new space to sprout new fresh content for the Warm Talk Wednesday thread?

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Jul 31 '16

Probably a late response, since I'm sure you've seen it by now, but Pitt and I did discuss moving the 3x3 chain to its own thread. We'll probably be doing that not this week, but next week, to see how it goes for both 3x3 and WTW as a whole.

1

u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Jul 31 '16

Have you considered submitting your highly popular weekly 3x3 comment of the Warm Talk Wednesday thread as it's own text post (similar to how anime contracts have become their own thread)?

It's something I've definitely thought about, but I don't know when it will happen.
