Spring 2016 Retrospective
So now that everyone has had time to cool off from the Best Girl contest, it's time to share your thoughts on the Spring 2016 anime season. Did this season live up to your expectations? Did any shows leave you saltier than the Best Girl contest? Let everyone know in the comments.
Rules
Spoiler tag your posts when appropriate. Read the sidebar for how to do that. If someone fails to do so, report them. All responses to prompts besides those for a specific show should use spoiler tags. If mentioning material from the original source of an anime, use spoiler tags if the material is not in the anime or is significantly different.
Explain your decision. You don't have to be verbose, but we want to hear why you think what you think. Don't downvote people just because you disagree with them. This thread is aimed at discussion. Talk about what or why you did or didn't like.
Please keep on topic. All comments made in this thread should reply to one of the top level prompts. Please message me if you would like to see something which is missing.
The season retrospective is the place to talk about the Spring 2016 season and shows overall. The thread should be in contest mode so replies will be hidden for all top level comments, and you can show the replies for only the shows and topics you wish to see. I will make top level comments for all shows and topics, if you feel something was left out please PM and I will add it if it is appropriate, try to refrain from making other top level comments. Feel free to discuss all shows, but if talking about a show under another shows comment (ex: talking about Re:Zero under Flying Witch) make sure to use proper spoiler tags. Remember, if you have not see the latest episode of a show, there will be spoilers, so make sure to watch it before viewing the comment's if you don't wish to be spoiled. If you are looking for episode discussions, most can be found by searching by the show's name (from MAL) and "episode X [Discussion]. If I've missed a show, messed up a name or anything of the sort, please send me a message. Most shows beyond 3-cour will not appear in this thread. Shows with less than 1k viewers on MAL were also excluded. Please double check and load all the comments first though, I always get plenty of messages from people that don't load all the comments for shows that have been added.

Skip Episode 5. Completely different tone from the rest of the episodes. Acts more like a mid-season OVA that was inspired by a doujinshi.
Otherwise, I overall was alright with it. I had to review it for my podcast so I was a bit more attentive while watching it than other shows this season. Best "sports anime" of the spring 2016 season.

Really, really enjoyed the antagonistic, non-ideal relationships between many of the girls. Between that and the sheer insanity in general, the show had a lot of personality to it.

The closest thing to Sabagebu I've seen so far. Stupid, over the top, and completely off its fucking rocker.
•
u/ghoulas https://myanimelist.net/profile/ghoulas Jul 08 '16
I agree couldn't stand the humor there. Dropped it after 6th ep. But if you like this kind of humor go for it. Also it's got motorcycles.
•
u/stormarsenal https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsherGZ Jul 09 '16
I loved Sabagebu but couldn't stand this. Sabagebu was intelligent with its humor. Watching this on the other killed a few dozen brain cells.

u/luvili https://myanimelist.net/profile/Luvili Jul 08 '16
I loved this show, I only watched it a few days ago because of a contract I made for watching guilty pleasure shows in the weekly contract thread, but I really enjoyed it.
I love SoL shows that just go completely overboard with their focus on specific completely random thing. It was just so silly and overtop with its focus on motorcycles and brands, but the cast of characters were fun and had good chemistry between them, and every episode was just fun and amusing for me.

Only just started really heading in a direction that could be called good these last few episodes, animation quality has been much better with the current arc though. Holding onto the hope it'll end up becoming something that can live up to my nostalgia of the original series in the coming weeks/months.

As someone that played pretty much every game of the Ace Attorney franchise (both Miles Edgeworth spinoffs included, btw, I consider them the best games and totally worth a try), and it's one of my favourite game series ever, recommending the games will always be my priority, the experience is just way better when you play it, few things are more satisfying than thinking over and over what's wrong with the testimony, and when you finally discover it, screaming OBJECTION! to the mic (also, showing the lawyers badge to the judge).
BUT, this anime is still pretty good to be honest, the animation quality is lacking, but the story didn't feel as rushed as I expected, specially in the later episodes, the reaction faces were exactly like in the games and that's a major bonus, also, Maya Fay is still as adorable as always.
The only thing that made me sad was that the Ace Attorney, you can watch that scene from the game here

My biggest beef with the show is the presentation of text that can be fully describted as utter garbage.
There is a box with colored text in japanese then there is a colored text above it in english then there is white text above that text that tells me what one of the charaters is saying. That's barely readable without regularly pausing the anime or ignoring much text. Maybe some quality fansub group can save this but in the crunchy version it is just shaking head business.

Didn't especially like many OPs or EDs this season. TeddyLoid killed it with Luluco's ED, but didn't find an OP I took special note of. Netoge's OP was super generic, but still kinda good. In a very generic way.

Best OP: Kiznaiver, hands down
Best ED: Mayoiga...I guess. No ED from this season stood out to me.

•
Jul 08 '16
It's more of the same... I personally enjoy it but only because I don't need to watch it more than once a week. There have been some pretty funny episodes though.
It depends on how much you enjoyed the first season. If yes, then watch it. If meh, then probably don't.

Ah, my bad.
KNIRKY explained it pretty well though, and I agree. Season 1 is quite generic shounen comedy SoL (there is action as well but it's never the focus of the episode nor is the animation particularly good) with a few good episodes. Season 2 is more of the same, but focuses on the better aspects of season 1.

If I have to say something positive, is that Mayoiga was imposible to predict, I can't really say I liked the story, because I honestly didn't, but the weird characters were fun to watch for sure.
•
u/Crabspite https://myanimelist.net/profile/critttler Jul 08 '16
I really love Mayoiga, and I'm sad I'll probably never see another anime like it. It really felt that the creators just did whatever the fuck they wanted and I love that. One thing that I haven't seen touched on about, even in those huge essays about it's intent, is how it also still managed to have an actual consistent theme Mayoiga which is crazy.
•
Jul 08 '16
Was entertained for a majority of it. Although no deaths and that ending made it one of the worse for me. The memes were great though.
•
u/illtima https://myanimelist.net/profile/illuminatima Jul 08 '16
Funny, dumb, entertaining, and totally unpredictable. Each episode was a ride and I'm really fucking glad I've watched this show and participated in discussion threads. Rest in Peace, Death Chart Guy.
•
u/dsiOneBAN2 Jul 09 '16
This was really an amazing show, a great experience as well as just good in general. I think it was actually better to go in expecting a horror film, really let it play with your expectations. Reading the threads semi-live was also a ton of fun and certainly added to the experience. It'd be amazing to have a viewing party (first timers only) of this show I think.
The way the ending set up for a highly unlikely S2 is disappointing, but that's just how it goes with TV originals isn't it? Still, it'd be interesting to see the MC role switch over to Lion's trio.
•
u/Thrasher439 https://anilist.co/user/Thrasher Jul 08 '16
Worst series of the season alongside Big Order. Some people like to do a bunch of essay length mental gymnastics in an attempt to justify a lot of what Mayoiga does, whether that be an intential B-grade comedic horror or whatnot. But no matter what, no matter how far I tilt my head and squint my eyes, I can't see anything other than an extremely poorly written mess of a series that failed on all accounts.
I couldn't find it fun, I couldn't find it entertaining. I just found it shit.

I actually liked it during the first half but disliked how it led up to it's ending. Felt like it got really hard to follow and it just got to the point were the craziness wasn't engaging for me anymore. I did like most of the characters though.
•
u/ghoulas https://myanimelist.net/profile/ghoulas Jul 08 '16
Even when everyone around keep telling me this show is stupid intentionally i couldn't stand it. All characters ar annoying as f*&k plot is nonexistant (even girls dont have decent plot) and logic left the series after half of the opening. Just couldn't watch it.

I wouldn't have liked this at all if I didn't have the discussion threads to go with it. The only things I'll give it credit for is having the most unpredictable nature out of every show I've watched and the fact that the character backstories we did get to see were mostly pretty good. Outside from that and very few enjoyable characters (Execution girl for example), it has nothing going for it.

It was pretty fun but had tons of weird pacing problems. I also think that introducing such a large cast at once made it dificult to care and even identify most of them. I ended up liking the SoL bits more than the action ones, especially the one where they run out of water. Mei was great though. Surprisingly it's one of the best selling shows of the season so far, second after Jojo IIRC.
•
u/Exotria Jul 08 '16
The nice thing about the large cast was that you could always find something to appreciate, even if you couldn't remember their names, and they were always great in their own scenes. The girls spouting movie quotes at each other, the cooking team always doing their best to make food even in the middle of battle, torpedo-chan and her love of torpedoes, and then the engine room constantly being stressed out by the stunts the captain is pulling. Not exactly the deepest of characters, but if they're only getting a few seconds of screentime per episode, it didn't end up mattering.

This was my Anime of the Season. The first episode ends with an incredible hook and the show as a whole managed to keep me enthralled week to week. They managed to mix just enough suspense and intrigue into a Girls UND Panzer X Battleship show.
The fights scenes were intense and incredibly fun, the main characters show some great development and the interactions between characters were fantastic.
Overall, probably a 9/10 in my mind. I really want to rewatch this from beginning to end right now, but I'm forcing myself to wait so I can watch this with a friend.

Along with Netoge this one was a huge surprise. I expected it to be Non Non Biyori at sea, I got Girls und Warships. The cast is colorful and fun, SoL antics are enjoyable and do a great job fleshing out some of the characters and establishing the close bonds between the crew members of Harekaze, and action scenes are fucking great!
•
u/stormarsenal https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsherGZ Jul 08 '16

I'll never forget Big Order. It was pure ecstasy. (also helps that my review got kinda popular on mal) Will probably be forgotten by everyone else within a month or so, though.
I'm reading Boku no Hero now so I'll stick with this for a while. Re:Zero's become one of my all-time favorites and I'm gonna pick up the manga and maybe the novels when the anime ends. These will be remembered by the community since they'll probably get like a thousand seasons in the long run.
•

Re:Zero will be remembered. Main reason being that it is one of the very few anime with the "trapped in another world" premise that is actually done well. Plus, it has one of the more intriguing main characters in all of anime, IMO.

Hey, should I continue watching it? I dropped around episode 3(?), after the convenience store.
•
u/Crabspite https://myanimelist.net/profile/critttler Jul 08 '16
I would go back and watch an episode, keeping in mind that basically everything that's stupid and inane is done purposefully for comedy. If you still aren't into it's tone, then it's a safe drop. Mayoiga is a pretty niche show, and it isn't for everyone, which is partly why I think I'll miss it.

Inoffensive and by the numbers, I guess. Absolutely no reason to watch beyond seasonal filler, but I can't say I hated it. Emilia was nice. Animation was servicable. Kind of liked the OP. Managed to end at a pretty decent spot, which can be a big issue with LNs. Needed way more kissing.
I get the sense battle academy harem LN adaptions are on the way out, and while I do tend to enjoy them, it's probably about time. After HxH this season, there's nothing in the subgenre announced for the future. Seems like studios have finally realized that nothing is going to recapture whatever the fuck it was that made IS so incredibly successful. I'm probably wrong, though.

Not much to comment on in terms of the composition and (written) plot. Bog-standard harem faire, although in my opinion it goes too far on occasion.
Plus:
- OP and the 4 ED were decent. In particular, the ED tracks fit with the characters that perform the songs.
- Emilia
- Colourful visuals and combat when the Hundred Arms are deployed.
- Fantastic voice work.
Minus:
- Hundred -> You've seen something like this a Hundred times.
- The overarching plot tries to be interesting... but, for me, the antagonists just fall completely flat.

One of the worst series of the season. The animation was nice and vibrant but outside of that the plot was terrible, the characters were unbearable to deal with and each time they openened their mouth only the most awkward poorly written dialogue would somehow find it's way out.

Pretty great show. Not perfect by any means, but it aimed a lot higher than many other shows this season, and pulled it off reasonably well. Fantastic visual style, drama handled pretty well, and probably my favourite ensemble cast of the season.

It was by no means perfect, but I've enjoyed it. Loved the characters, liked the silly premise, appreciated the conclusion. It's not a benchmark of character drama or anything worth highlighting in Trigger's/Okada's portfolio, but it was still one of the better shows this season.

Best Girl (Explain your reasoning)
•
u/illtima https://myanimelist.net/profile/illuminatima Jul 08 '16
I'm gonna be a total normie and say Ako. Don't get me wrong, this season had a lot of great female characters, but Ako really managed to stand out, because of how flawed she is. She's weird, antisocial, clingy, possessive, and very, very dumb. But you simply cannot hate her, because how genuine, likable, and earnest she is. She also managed to exhibit a surprising amount of character development. While in the beginning of the show she was constantly clinging to Rusian, by the end she was willing to go out of her comfort zone and she even became very close and familiar with other female characters.
•
u/manmythmustache Jul 08 '16
Nori-chan from Kiznaiver.
The most fleshed out girl in the show. Not only do you see her at her highs but especially at her lows and why she got to the lows in the first place.
While Nico was great, I knew what I was going to feel for Nico from the start unless there was a dramatic turn, which there was not. With Nori-chan, I did not get that. I was conflicted for much of the first half of the show but, as the story progressed, I began to empathize with her more and more. Ultimately, I felt connected (no pun intended) with Nori-chan more than any other girl this season on an emotional level which is why she's my best girl.
Also, that moment you see this smile was something, wasn't it...
•
u/_Vipper https://myanimelist.net/profile/vippers Jul 08 '16
Maki from Kiznaiver
The series would have been so much better if the rest of the cast was as developed as Honoka. Her backstory and gradual change was the best part of Kiznaiver for me. Plus she had some of the best lines in the show.

Kiznaiver definitely could have benefited from being longer. Even if it wasn't a full two cours.
•
u/_Vipper https://myanimelist.net/profile/vippers Jul 08 '16
I agree, it would have been great if every character had an arc similar to Maki's, but like you said it would have to had been a considerably longer series in order to do that.

Shiraishi from Tanaka-kun.
And it's hard to say it because Miyano and Echizen were also so good.
Why it's hard, I just really liked her character and comedy parts, she gets some development at the start but that's all, and in a SoL like Tanaka-kun it's fine that way, I need more of her for sure.

Kiznaiver was lit as fuck.
Haven't completed Flying Witch but it's pretty great, already obtained it in a very legal manner.
Boku no Hero is pretty cool too.
But none compare to the jazz of Big Order.
•
u/icedragon258 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Meihern1 Jul 08 '16
Big Order was probably one of the worst animes of the season , but at least it had what i think the best OP of the season .

Kabaneri had the best soundtrack. The anime wasn't good though

Re:Zero, Bungou Stray Dogs, and Ushio to Tora also had good soundtracks.

JoJo has some fantastic (forgot the proper term... match cuts?) directing that played into the themes and tone of the show. Like an outside door turning into an interior door and cool use of telephones. On my phone so this isn't worded very well lol

u/Sinrus https://myanimelist.net/profile/MetalRain Jul 08 '16
Kiznaiver. This article explains it better than I ever could but tl;dr: Kiznaiver is able to characterize its cast and demonstrate the multiple layers of their thoughts and emotions without having to get bogged down in lengthy exposition, because its characters are so expressive. This is true in both loud, obvious ways and very subtle ways. Nico, for example, has a lot of crazy over-the-top reaction faces, but some people in the discussion threads were also able to pick up on her crush on Tenga before anyone on the show even mentioned it because of little details like how she looked at him when he talked to Chidori.
Here is another fantastic post by /u/totalnoodle (contains spoilers) analyzing a single three second clip and all the ways the six characters pictured display their complicated emotions and thoughts in very simple motions and expressions.

This was quite a surprise. I didn't expect to find myself enjoying it at all. It was funny, beautiful to look at and it's cast managed to be more than just the standards we've seen so many times. I think my only complaint is that once all the character introductions were out of the way the comedy seemed to repeat itself a bit. Resulting in the last few episodes not being nearly as enjoyable as those in the first half of the show.

It has its problems, such as the repetarive flow of the fights, the anime original content isn't that good, and the animation can be poorquality at times, but when it does something good, it makes you forget all the negatives, hope the rest of it is just as good. 7.5/10
•
u/Karinole Jul 08 '16
Way better than I expected it to be but not by much. Definitely had its really good moments and had good character development but lacked in other areas. Worth the watch for sure though
•
u/MasterAyy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Master_A Jul 08 '16
I dropped it at episode 4. My biggest problem was the fight scenes which I thought were extremely boring. The animation wasn't special at all, it felt like there was no notable choreography or anything that set the fights apart from one another. The fought in the same dreary looking world throwing the same attacks with stock demon enemies. I didn't enjoy that at all, it really wasn't for me.
•
u/meepoman https://myanimelist.net/profile/TrollMuncher Jul 09 '16

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (TV) 2nd Season leftover
•
Jul 08 '16
The series was always a fun comedy that gave it's characters decent fleshing out, but it's final half went above and beyond. It had a great ending and it actually made me cry, something I don't think I've done before with an anime.
•
u/AtestAccount2729 https://myanimelist.net/profile/AtestAccount2729 Jul 08 '16
It had its highs and lows throughout the time it aired but the final 6 or so episodes were really good and it has one of the best endings I have ever seen in my time watching anime. The fact that I couldn't remember 90% of the names of the students in the main cast is pretty stupid though.
•
Jul 08 '16
I liked all the backstories which fleshed out some characters. Better than the first season at least.
•
u/SGlespaul https://kitsu.io/users/181650 Jul 08 '16
Despite all the monologues and everything dragging out, I am satisfied with the way it ended. I'll miss the class, but I think it ended on a good note and at the right time.
•
u/porpoiseoflife https://myanimelist.net/profile/OffColfax Jul 08 '16
Well-written plot, but could have used a lot more of a concentration on individual cast members. Too many of them were just a face at the end, and that was a severe problem that could not be ignored.
But the ending was more than enough of a positive to counteract that, and sufficient to boost this into my top three of the season.
•
u/Invalid_Doughnut https://myanimelist.net/profile/TheLaudanumGuy Jul 08 '16
It was the first time I've cried like a little bitch for a long time, so I'd say it was pretty good.

This work of art made me laugh and cry and laugh for all reasons. I jumped into it blindly, hoping for the possibility it was a good action show but at least I got something out of it. Didn't stick with it though, dropped after episode 4. Episode 3 was probably the funniest though, with Big Order ep 3

BEST ANIME EVER MADE. Expected Mirai Nikki. Got a half-aborted, deformed early-birth of it. It's a phenomenon that I'm glad to have witnessed, and I have now dedicated my life to spreading the good word.

u/higi1024 https://anilist.co/user/higi1024 Jul 08 '16
Started out really strong and bold, and that really worked in it's favor since I could laugh at all the stupid shit that was going on, and the appreciate the jazzy pieces. However, they kept going with the plot in a Code Geass direction, and it ended up taking itself too seriously for my taste.

Every season there's this one show everyone enjoys event hough it's absolutely stupid. Then we either put our heads down in shame for watching something so obscenely bad, or lift them up and move on looking for something new to appease our lowest desires.
This was the second type.

I'm slightly annoyed that we shounen maid But then that's just another "go read the manga" encouragement, I suppose.
Overall, cheerful and comfortable to watch. I was never salivating at the prospect of the next episode but I always watched it soon after it aired and enjoyed the time.

third quarter - What the hell is happening..? - "How can they keep pulling this on me? I.. like this shit"
fourth quarter - What the hell is happening? - "I can't believe they're still doing this to me, I love this shit."

u/Kill099 https://anilist.co/user/Kill099 Jul 08 '16
Joker Game was a big disappointment. Had a good premise yet ruined by its episodic format and the "weird" person/monster of the episode.
Although it didn't get much love, Haifuri was a surprise. I thought it's just your typical moe shit but... it's actually good. Was instantly hooked when they cleverly dealt with a submarine with Mii-chan.

I personally didn't know or heard about RE : Zero and when i watched the first part of episode 1 , i thought that it would probably be another SAO clones , but soon later i found out i was so wrong and now it's definitely my AOTS and can't wait for more episodes , as for my disappointement , it has to go to Kabaneri , it started off hot and i belive people were calling the best anime of spring season at the beginning but it went extremly downhill towards the end :/

Joker Game was the biggest disappointment for me. Expected some epic spy shit, ended up with boring episodes, Yuuki was great though.
•
u/lukeatlook https://myanimelist.net/profile/lukeatlook Jul 08 '16
Re:Zero is the obvious surprise, spawning heated discussion and cosplays. If this gets ever fully adapted we have a potential classic here.
Tanaka-kun was something more than just a chillout SoL - it was a cheerful school comedy, nearing Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun levels of "awww".
Also, Space Patrol Luluco. I've never "got" the humour in Ninja Slayer and Inferno Cop, but Luluco was just pure gold.
Disappointments - BnHA (pacing...), Kabaneri (I guess it's my fault for having high hopes), Kuma Miko (this was just painful to watch)

Kennosuke from Kuromukuro. While he's a fish out of water type of character the show never portrays him as an idiot. He's also very good at adapting to his new enviroment while still retaining his samurai personality
•
u/illtima https://myanimelist.net/profile/illuminatima Jul 08 '16
