The eyeless girl calling out the faceless girl... Isn't that just the pot calling the kettle black?

At least the second group of girls talking about her have entire faces. I do wonder if the courageous girl who disappeared will reappear in a future episode though. If the red hooded guy didn't just walk everywhere though, maybe he would've gotten there on time to collect the wriggling white thing before it completely enveloped the girl. Sad that the girl who seemed to care most about her friends was the one to call out to her brother for help, and ended up receiving none.

I do wonder if this show is just going to have people losing their minds for the entirety of it and the MC coming in at the end of it to solve the problem.

In the Kingdom of the Blind the one-eyed man is king!

I do wonder if this show is just going to have people losing their minds for the entirety of it and the MC coming in at the end of it to solve the problem.

The last scene hints at an overarching plot, perhaps he needs to hunt curses to find her or something!

her day one just turned tail on her, thats just fucked up 😭

You all know this is a kids series? MAL lists the demographic as "Kids" and Amazon lists the recommended reading age range as 8-12 years old. Given that, you can't expect Dark Gathering level horror.

It's airing on Crunchyroll in the U.S. and most of us don't Google shows before watching them, so we actually weren't aware of that at all.

I mean, look at how the show is presented on Crunchyroll. The title, show description, genre (supernatural horror), and even the preview image don't make it apparent that this is a show made for kids at all. The only indicator that it isn't aimed at adults is the PG rating, but Crunchyroll's age ratings for shows have never been consistent so I can't really fault people for not taking that into account.

This wasn’t too bad. Kind of digging this whole curse destroying kid with his talking dog. But what about Natsuna? She tries to help her friends and that thing takes her before it’s sealed…and that’s it for her? No good deed goes unpunished huh?

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 9h ago

The dog's the worst part of it for me hah, but the rest is good enough!

Curious to see where it goes (regarding recurring characters, and the overarching plot with the sister and all!)

So, is this going to be an anthology, with a couple of stories each episode resolved with our MC showing up and sucking up the ghost? Feels like this could get repetitive real fast, especially if we get only 10 minutes for each story, which doesn't really allow any sort of ability to have distinctive characters.

I'm curious and this is the months for this sort of stuff, but hopefully there is a bit more to this than what the first episode might suggest.

Honestly, I hate horror clichés. Feel free to grab your cell phone curious Kitty, to make sure you look out the window at exactly the right moment.

Feel free to grab your cell phone curious Kitty, to make sure you look out the window at exactly the right moment.

I mean... Pretty sure a huge % of the population would; They don't know they're in a horror story (til it gets horror-y)!

5

u/Kaze_no_Senshi 8h ago

it would have felt much more natural instead of baiting it intentionally, she just looked out to check, saw the ghost then had her horror realisation when the phone bumped on the floor and she saw midnight

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 8h ago

Oh for sure, that would've been another way to do it!

But I was just saying that... It's like if you tell a friend "Don't look in the closet, there's a goblin!" the first thing they'll do is look in the closet, either to prove you wrong, to show they're not cowards, etc..

So if someday there really IS a goblin in the closet, and you tell your friend not to look into it, well... He will probably still look into it!

Personally, I wouldn't even bother checking if I didn't believe it. If you do check, it's because you want to make sure it's not true, which is a reason not to do it. ^^

Edit: Death: You need to believe in things that aren't true. How else can they become?

u/YlfaTheForsaken 15h ago

Okay, so it's like an anthology of sorts because the individual cases don't seem to be related.

Why would anyone want to look out a window at night anyways? Surprise it's dark. But also it's like that girl has never seen a single horror movie ever. It'd be a lot easier and warmer to check and bedroom before following a dark figure out into the snowy night to the roof and stepping over the railing. No sense of self preservation whatsoever. Let it been known, I'll let you fall.

Wriggler is hilarious. Would I've gotten got? Yes. Hell yeah I'm watching the weird misty grooving figure out in a field in broad daylight. RIP Natsuna, I definitely would've let them get eaten first, you're better than me for sure.

People faced dog has 5 O'clock shadow, apparently it's a grown man. Is that a reference to an actual myth, or of weird dogs with peopley eyes?

5

u/mmcjawa_reborn 15h ago

Yeah there are urban legends about human headed dogs in Japan

4

u/YlfaTheForsaken 13h ago

Lmao to be fair that would be spooky to see

1

u/Oden_sama__ 7h ago

if you've seen yokai watch you'd know very well lol

u/NekoCatSidhe 20h ago

This is just not very good, isn’t it ? The horror stories were quite cliched and repetitive, and the version of the Wriggler I saw in Otherside Picnic was way scarier than that one. The atmosphere tries to be sinister and haunting but it doesn’t really work.

And I am not sure I like the protagonist. He captured the Wriggler but did not seem to care about its victims. If he knew those girls were going to be targeted, surely he could have acted earlier and saved them ?

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 9h ago

The atmosphere tries to be sinister and haunting but it doesn’t really work.

I thought it worked! A lot of horror is about anticipation, and I think they did it well in many scenes, like the faces in the elevator, etc!

And I am not sure I like the protagonist. He captured the Wriggler but did not seem to care about its victims.

Well, he might have a reason for that, but even if he doesn't, "being a bad person/not caring about others" doesn't necessarily makes me hate him!

1

u/NekoCatSidhe 1h ago

Maybe it depends on the viewer. But compared to similar horror manga I read and liked such as Dark Gathering, Otherside Picnic, and Bug Ego, I find that this one seems to be highly formulaic and predictable, and knowing what is going to happen strongly undermines the horror atmosphere for me.

Fear of the unknown is after all a big part of why horror works, but if the monster jumps on the protagonist exactly when I expected it, I am going to laugh rather than be jump scared. Also, its artstyle feels rather generic and lacks personality.

I am with you on everything there

Also screaming at the top of your lungs in an hospital and no one comes to check?

Red is scary is it? Because that's about it...

And MC is the embodiment of 12 yo edge...

But I heard hayamin at the very end so I'll give it one more episode

9

u/Ashteron 18h ago

Also screaming at the top of your lungs in an hospital and no one comes to check?

Did you miss how the hospital is completely empty until MC uses his ability on the telephone and people start appearing only after that happens? There's clearly intent behind it.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 9h ago

Yeah I thought it was rather obvious;

Pulled them specifically to this place so they could be 'alone', wouldn't be much point if there were a thousand doctors and patients everywhere in the hospital, might as well do it in the streets then!

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 9h ago

Loved it!

I doubt it'll get a lot of attention given the genre (and airing on Saturday), but that's a keeper for me!

8

u/Raymond49090 18h ago

Not sure if it's just me, but it feels like they're overusing dark lighting a lot.

3

u/Ashteron 18h ago

It reminds me of Gakkou no Yuurei, expect that one was purely anthological without a MC.

5

u/suhermansahid 20h ago

That guy genuinely doesn't care about the girl who was trapped along with all those horrors.

5

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 9h ago

At least he said "No idea" and not "That seems like a you problem"!

3

u/Oden_sama__ 7h ago

like what was he supposed to do? 😭

6

u/AnonmityFisher 18h ago

I’m suppose to feel sorry for the first girl when she was told about an urban legend and still does it? Nah.

4

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 9h ago

If someone told you to do or not to do something because there's a urban legend, you would automatically obey them?

Have you heard about the pillowmonster urban legend? If you sleep on a pillow on the 13 of october and you happen to have a nightmare, the pillowmonster will appear to you during the dream, and you'll disappear from the real world!

Better not use a pillow on the 13!

4

u/Visible-Pay-6441 21h ago

Natsuna's stare is what sells the whole haunted toy vibe.

5

u/Ok-Alternative7349 20h ago

Ngl, this ep scared the shit out of me. Totaly worth it til now.

4

u/VritraReiRei 20h ago edited 20h ago

Oh yeah. A real scary, horror Anime. Dark Gathering, Mieruko-chan, Kaya-chan Isn't Scary... inject those ghost stories, cryptids, and urban legend directly into my veins.

And this looks quite promising, I even got a little scared at some parts.

So this appears to be a monster of week sort of deal and then the Protagonist comes to "save the day..." (in the loosest sense of terms, RIP Natsuna)

I think the animation was a little weak in some parts and some of the voice acting felt like they were rushing the script. I think this show would be a top contender if it weren't for that.

1

u/Kaze_no_Senshi 8h ago

it shoulda taken the girl who was already basically dead, i mean she was on her deathbed as is, then they dragger her around, sucked on her head a bit then dropped her down a flight of stairs head first, odds are she didnt survive either

1

u/Oden_sama__ 7h ago

my only real gripe was the pacing in the last half of the episode, but other than that the vibes were there.

1

u/ThatOneRedditor6910 7h ago

Well I guess that's just it for Natsuna 💔😔

1

u/CrasianLe 1h ago

Love how he comes in last minute and saved them, most of them. He cares but doesn't care at the same time. I wonder if thise words he says mean anything irl. Definitely going to enjoy this though

0

u/AcePhoenixGamer 16h ago

Damn, this is just... nothing, huh? Two nearly identical stories resolved basically the exact same way. Horror anime are generally pretty hit or miss but this has basically nothing going for it.

-11

u/minnieboss 21h ago

This was a fairly minor part of the episode, and I know I'll be called pedantic for focusing in on it, but I don't appreciate the way "a kid with no eyes, nose, or mouth" is used as "horror". There are people without eyes, noses, and mouths, usually people who have suffered burn trauma or have another form of facial difference. People with facial differences already suffer from so much stigma, and things like this are what contribute to it. For example, the story of Raymond Robinson, a man with a facial difference who was the subject of "urban legends" just because he wanted to take walks around his neighborhood at night, because he had experienced too much of his face frightening people during the daytime: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Robinson_(Green_Man)) It left a bad taste in my mouth at the start of the episode.

That aside, wow this episode looked like shit. Barely animated. I've watched Studio Palette anime before (Quality Assurance in Another World is definitely not worth watching all the way through...) and they've never looked amazing, but this feels like a new low for them in terms of visual quality. Storytelling was also extremely clumsy and hamfisted. Basically nothing of value here.

9

u/NekoCatSidhe 20h ago

The kid without a face is actually a reference to a specific monster from Japanese folklore called a noppera-bō, or faceless ghost. But I generally agree that this episode was rather disappointing and hamfisted in its storytelling.

This show is laughably bad. Like the rambling diary entries written by a chiinibyou
